1 Hør, mine barn, på en fars tilrettevisning og gi akt, så I kan lære klokskap!
Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, And attend, that ye may learn understanding!
2 For en god lærdom gir jeg eder; mine bud må I ikke forlate.
For I give you good instruction; Forsake ye not my commandments.
3 For da jeg var sønn hjemme hos min far, da jeg var liten og min mors eneste barn,
For I was my father's son, A tender and only child in the sight of my mother.
4 da lærte han mig og sa til mig: La ditt hjerte holde fast ved mine ord, bevar mine bud, så skal du leve.
He taught me, and said to me, Let thy heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments, and live.
5 Kjøp visdom, kjøp forstand, glem ikke og vik ikke fra min munns ord!
Get wisdom, get understanding; Forget not, and depart not from, the words of my mouth.
6 Forlat den ikke, så skal den vokte dig; elsk den, så skal den være ditt vern.
Forsake her not, and she will guard thee: Love her, and she will preserve thee.
7 Begynnelsen til visdom er: Kjøp visdom, ja, kjøp forstand for alt ditt gods!
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore gain wisdom, And with all thy gain, gain understanding.
8 Ophøi den, så skal den ophøie dig; den skal gjøre dig ære, når du favner den.
Exalt her, and she will promote thee; She will bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her;
9 Den skal sette en fager krans på ditt hode; den skal rekke dig en herlig krone.
She will give to thy head a graceful wreath, A beautiful crown will she bestow upon thee.
10 Hør, min sønn, og ta imot mine ord, så skal dine leveår bli mange.
Hear, O my son! and receive my sayings! So shall the years of thy life be many.
11 Om visdoms vei lærer jeg dig, jeg leder dig på rettvishets stier.
I have taught thee the way of wisdom, I have guided thee in the right path.
12 Når du går, skal intet hindre dine skritt, og når du løper, skal du ikke snuble.
When thou goest, thy steps shall not be confined; And, when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
13 Hold fast ved min tilrettevisning, slipp den ikke! Bevar den, for den er ditt liv.
Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go; Keep her, for she is thy life.
14 På de ugudeliges sti må du ikke komme og ikke følge de ondes vei.
Enter not into the path of the wicked, And go not in the way of evil men;
15 Sky den, følg den ikke, vik fra den og gå forbi!
Avoid it, pass not upon it, Turn from it, and go away.
16 For de får ikke sove uten de har gjort noget ondt, og søvnen tas fra dem om de ikke har ført nogen til fall.
For they sleep not, unless they have done mischief; Yea, their sleep is taken away, unless they have caused some to fall.
17 For de eter ugudelighets brød og drikker voldsgjernings vin.
For they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence.
18 Men de rettferdiges sti er lik et strålende lys, som blir klarere og klarere til det er høilys dag.
But the path of the righteous is as the light of dawn, Which groweth brighter and brighter unto the perfect day.
19 De ugudeliges vei er som det dype mørke; de vet ikke hvad de snubler over.
The way of the wicked is as thick darkness; They know not at what they stumble.
20 Min sønn! Akt på mine ord, bøi ditt øre til min tale!
My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear to my sayings;
21 La dem ikke vike fra dine øine, bevar dem dypt i ditt hjerte!
Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thy heart!
22 For de er liv for hver den som finner dem, og lægedom for hele hans legeme.
For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.
23 Bevar ditt hjerte fremfor alt det som bevares; for livet utgår fra det.
More than any thing which thou watchest, watch thy heart; For from it goeth forth life.
24 Hold dig fra svikefulle ord, og la falske leber være langt fra dig!
Put away from thee a deceitful mouth, And remove far from thee perverse lips.
25 La dine øine se bent frem og dine øielokk vende rett frem for dig!
Let thine eyes look straight forward, And thine eyelids be directed before thee.
26 Gjør din fots sti jevn, og la alle dine veier være rette!
Give heed to the path of thy foot, And let all thy ways be steadfast.
27 Bøi ikke av til høire eller til venstre, vend din fot fra det onde!
Turn not to the right hand or to the left; Remove thy foot from evil.
