Nehemias 9

1 På den fire og tyvende dag i samme måned samlet Israels barn sig og holdt faste, klædd i sekk og med jord strødd på sine hoder.

And in the four and twentieth day of the month the children of Israel came together with fasting and with sackcloth, and earth upon them.

2 Og Israels ætt skilte sig fra alle fremmede og stod så frem og bekjente sine synder og sine fedres misgjerninger.

And the seed of the children of Israel separated themselves from every stranger: and they stood, and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

3 Så blev de stående på sin plass mens det blev lest op for dem av Herrens, deres Guds lovbok en fjerdedel av dagen, og en annen fjerdedel av dagen avla de bekjennelse og tilbad Herren sin Gud.

And they rose up to stand: and they read in the book of the law of the Lord their God, four times in the day, and four times they confessed, and adored the Lord their God.

4 Josva og Bani, Kadmiel, Sebanja, Bunni, Serebja, Bani og Kenani trådte op på levittenes forhøining, og de ropte med høi røst til Herren sin Gud.

And there stood up upon the seep of the Levites, Josue, and Bani, and Cedmihel, Sabania, Bonni, Sarebias, Bani, and Chanani: and they cried with a loud voice to the Lord their God.

5 Og levittene Josva og Kadmiel, Bani, Hasabneja, Serebja, Hodia, Sebanja og Petahja sa: Stå op og lov Herren eders Gud fra evighet til evighet! Ja, lovet være ditt herlige navn, som er ophøiet over all lov og pris!

And the Levites Josue and Cedmihel, Bonni, Hasebnia, Serebia, Oduia, Sebnia, and Phathahia, said: Arise, bless the Lord your God from eternity to eternity: and blessed be the high name of thy glory with all blessing and praise.

6 Du alene er Herren, du har gjort himlene, himlenes himler og all deres hær, jorden og alt som er på den, havene og alt som er i dem, og du holder det alt sammen i live, og himmelens hær tilbeder dig.

Thou thyself, O Lord alone, thou hast made heaven, and the heaven of heavens, and all the host thereof: the earth and all things that are in it: the seas and all that are therein: and thou givest life to all these things, and the host of heaven adoreth thee.

7 Det var du, Herre Gud, som utvalgte Abram og førte ham ut fra kaldeernes Ur og gav ham navnet Abraham.

Thou, O Lord God, art he who chosest Abram, and broughtest him forth out of the fire of the Chaldeans, and gavest him the name of Abraham.

8 Og du fant hans hjerte trofast mot dig, og du gjorde den pakt med ham at du vilde gi hans ætt kana'anittenes, hetittenes, amorittenes og ferisittenes og jebusittenes og girgasittenes land; og du holdt ditt ord, for du er rettferdig.

And thou didst find his heart faithful before thee: and thou madest a covenant with him, to give him the land of the Chanaanite, of the Hethite, and of the Amorrhite, and of the Pherezite, and of the Jebusite, and of the Gergezite, to give it to his seed: and thou hast fulfilled thy words, because thou art just.

9 Du så våre fedres nød i Egypten, og du hørte deres rop ved det Røde Hav,

And thou sawest the affliction of our fathers in Egypt: and thou didst hear their cry by the Red Sea.

10 og du gjorde tegn og undergjerninger med Farao og alle hans tjenere og alt folket i hans land; for du visste at de hadde faret overmodig frem mot dem, og du vant dig et stort navn, som det kan sees på denne dag.

And thou shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharao, and upon all his servants, and upon the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them: and thou madest thyself a name, as it is at this day.

11 Du kløvde havet for dem, og de gikk midt igjennem havet på det tørre; du kastet deres forfølgere i dypet, så de sank som sten i de veldige vann.

And thou didst divide the sea before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea on dry land: but their persecutors thou threwest into the depth, as a stone into mighty waters.

12 Du ledet dem i en skystøtte om dagen og i en ildstøtte om natten for å Iyse for dem på den vei de skulde gå.

And in a pillar of a cloud thou wast their leader by day, and in a pillar of Are by night, that they might see the way by which they went.

13 Du steg ned på Sinai berg og talte med dem fra himmelen; du gav dem rette befalinger og trygge lover, gode forskrifter og bud.

Thou camest down also to mount Sinai, and didst speak with them from heaven, and thou gavest them right judgments, and the law of truth, ceremonies, and good precepts.

14 Du kunngjorde dem din hellige sabbat; du gav dem bud og forskrifter og lover gjennem din tjener Moses.

Thou madest known to them thy holy sabbath, and didst prescribe to them commandments, and ceremonies, and the law by the hand of Moses thy servant.

15 Du gav dem brød fra himmelen når de hungret, og lot vann komme frem av klippen for dem når de tørstet, og du bød dem å dra inn og ta det land i eie som du med opløftet hånd hadde svoret at du vilde gi dem.

And thou gavest them bread from heaven in their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock in their thirst, and thou saidst to them that they should go in, and possess the land, upon which thou hadst lifted up thy hand to give it them.

16 Men de, våre fedre, var overmodige og hårdnakkede og hørte ikke på dine bud.

But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks and hearkened not to thy commandments.

17 De vilde ikke høre og kom ikke i hu de undergjerninger du hadde gjort for dem, men var hårdnakkede og valgte sig en høvding og vilde i sin gjenstridighet vende tilbake til sin trældom; men du er en Gud som tilgir, nådig og barmhjertig, langmodig og rik på miskunnhet, og du forlot dem ikke.

And they would not hear, and they remembered not thy wonders which thou hadst done for them. And they hardened their necks, and gave the head to return to their bondage, as it were by contention. But thou, a forgiving God, gracious, and merciful, longsuffering, and full of compassion, didst not forsake them.

18 Ja, de støpte sig endog en kalv og sa: Dette er din Gud, som førte dig op fra Egypten. Og de gjorde sig skyldige i store bespottelser.

Yea when they had made also to themselves a molten calf, and had said: This is thy God, that brought thee out of Egypt: and hail committed great blasphemies:

19 Men du - i din store barmhjertighet forlot du dem ikke i ørkenen; skystøtten vek ikke fra dem om dagen, men ledet dem på veien, ei heller vek ildstøtten fra dem om natten, men lyste for dem på den vei de skulde gå.

Yet thou, in thy many mercies, didst not leave them in the desert: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day to lead them in the way, and the pillar of fire by night to shew them the way by which they should go.

20 Du gav dem din gode Ånd til å lære dem; du nektet ikke deres munn din manna, og du gav dem vann når de tørstet.

And thou gavest them thy good Spirit to teach them, and thy manna thou didst not withhold from their mouth, and thou gavest them water for their thirst.

21 I firti år forsørget du dem i ørkenen, de manglet intet; deres klær blev ikke utslitt, og deres føtter blev ikke hovne.

Forty years didst thou feed them in the desert, and nothing was wanting to them: their garments did not grow old, and their feet were not worn.

22 Du gav dem riker og folk, som du skiftet ut til dem på alle kanter; de tok i eie det land som tilhørte Sihon, kongen i Hesbon, og det land som tilhørte Og, kongen i Basan.

And thou gavest them kingdoms, and nations, and didst divide lots for them: and they possessed the land of Sehon, and the land of the king of Hesebon, and the land of Og king of Basan.

23 Du gjorde deres barn tallrike som himmelens stjerner og førte dem inn i det land som du hadde lovt deres fedre at de skulde komme inn i og ta i eie.

And thou didst multiply their children as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them to the land concerning which thou hadst said to their fathers, that they should go in and possess it.

24 Så kom da deres barn og tok landet i eie, og du ydmyket landets innbyggere, kana'anittene, for dem og gav dem i deres hånd, både kongene og folkene der i landet, så de kunde gjøre med dem som de vilde.

And the children came and possessed the land, and thou didst humble before them the inhabitants of the land, the Chanaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as it pleased them.

25 De inntok faste byer og vant sig fruktbar jord og tok huser til eie som var fulle av alle gode ting, og uthugne brønner, vingårder og oljetrær og frukttrær i mengde; og de åt og blev mette og fete og gjorde sig til gode ved din store godhet.

And they took strong cities and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods: cisterns made by others, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: and they ate, and were filled, and became fat, and abounded with delight in thy great goodness.

26 Men de blev gjenstridige og satte sig op imot dig og kastet din lov bak sin rygg; de drepte dine profeter, som vidnet for dem og vilde føre dem tilbake til dig; og de gjorde sig skyldige i store bespottelser.

But they provoked thee to wrath, and departed from thee, and threw thy law behind their backs: and they killed thy prophets, who admonished them earnestly to return to thee: and they were guilty of great blasphemies.

27 Da gav du dem i deres fienders hånd, og de plaget dem; men når de i sin nød ropte til dig, hørte du det fra himmelen, og i din store barmhjertighet gav du dem frelsere, som utfridde dem av deres fienders hånd.

And thou gavest them into the hands of their enemies, and they afflicted them. And in the time of their tribulation they cried to thee, and thou heardest from heaven, and according to the multitude of thy tender mercies thou gavest them saviours, to save them from the hands of their enemies.

28 Men når de så kom til ro, gjorde de atter det som var ondt i dine øine, og du overlot dem i deres fienders hånd, så de hersket over dem; men når de så atter ropte til dig, hørte du det fra himmelen og utfridde dem i din barmhjertighet gang på gang.

But after they had rest, they returned to do evil in thy sight: and thou leftest them in the hand of their enemies, and they had dominion over them. Then they returned, and cried to thee: and thou heardest from heaven, and deliveredst them many times in thy mercies.

29 Du vidnet for dem og vilde omvende dem til din lov; men de var overmodige og hørte ikke på dine bud, de syndet mot dine lover, de som mennesket lever ved når han gjør efter dem; i sin gjenstridighet satte de skulderen imot; de var hårdnakkede og vilde ikke høre.

And thou didst admonish them to return to thy law. But they dealt proudly, and hearkened not to thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them: and they withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

30 I mange år bar du over med dem og vidnet for dem ved din Ånd gjennem dine profeter; men de vendte ikke øret til, og du gav dem i fremmede folks hånd.

And thou didst forbear with them for many years, and didst testify against them by thy spirit by the hand of thy prophets: and they heard not, and thou didst deliver them into the hand of the people of the lands.

31 Men i din store barmhjertighet gjorde du ikke aldeles ende på dem og forlot dem ikke; for du er en nådig og barmhjertig Gud.

Yet in thy very many mercies thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them: because thou art a merciful and gracious God.

32 Og nu, vår Gud, du store, veldige og forferdelige Gud, du som holder din pakt og bevarer din miskunnhet, la det ikke tykkes dig ringe alt det onde som har rammet oss, våre konger, våre høvdinger, våre prester, våre profeter, våre fedre og alt ditt folk, fra assyrerkongenes dager til den dag idag!

Now therefore our God, great, strong and terrible, who keepest covenant and mercy, turn not away from thy face all the labour which hath come upon us, upon our kings, and our princes, and our priests, and our prophets, and our fathers, and all the people from the days of the king of Assur, until this day.

33 Du er rettferdig i alt det som er kommet over oss; for du har vist trofasthet, men vi har vært ugudelige.

And thou art just in all things that have come upon us: because thou hast done truth, but we have done wickedly.

34 Våre konger, våre høvdinger, våre prester og våre fedre har ikke gjort efter din lov; de har ikke hørt på dine bud og på de vidnesbyrd du lot bli dem til del.

Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept thy law, and have not minded thy commandments, and thy testimonies which thou hast testified among them.

35 Og enda de levde i sitt eget rike, og du hadde gitt dem så meget godt og overlatt dem dette vide og fruktbare land, tjente de dig ikke og vendte ikke om fra sine onde gjerninger.

And they have not served thee in their kingdoms, and in thy manifold goodness, which thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land, which thou deliveredst before them, nor did they return from their most wicked devices.

36 Se, vi er idag træler - vi er træler i det land du gav våre fedre, forat de skulde ete dets frukt og dets gode ting,

Behold we ourselves this day are bondmen: and the land, which thou gavest our fathers, to eat the bread thereof, and the good things thereof, and we ourselves are servants in it.

37 og sin rike grøde bærer det for de konger som du satte over oss for våre synders skyld, og de råder over våre legemer og vårt fe efter eget tykke. Vi er i stor nød.

And the fruits thereof grow up for the kings, whom thou hast set over us for our sins, and they have dominion over our bodies, and over our beasts, according to their will, and we are in great tribulation.

38 På grunn av alt dette gjorde vi en fast pakt og skrev den op; skrivelsen blev forsynt med segl og underskrevet av våre høvdinger, våre levitter og våre prester.

And because of all this we ourselves make a covenant, and write it, and our princes, our Levites, and our priests sign it.
