1 Nu samler du dig i skare, du skarenes datter! Voller har de kastet op imot oss; med staven slår de Israels dommer på kinnbenet.
Meanwhile, shalt thou gather together in troops, thou daughter of a troop, siege, hath he laid against us, —with a sceptre, will they smite on the cheek, the judge of Israel!
2 Men du Betlehem, Efrata, som er liten til å være med blandt Judas tusener! Av dig skal det utgå for mig en som skal være hersker over Israel, og hans utgang er fra fordum, fra evighets dager.
Thou, therefore, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though, little, to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee, shall Mine come forth, to be ruler in Israel, —whose comings forth, have been from of old, from the days of age-past time.
3 Derfor skal han overgi dem inntil den tid da hun som skal føde, har født; og de som blir igjen av hans brødre, skal vende tilbake sammen med Israels barn.
Therefore, will he give them up, until the time when, one who is to bring forth, hath brought forth, —and, the remainder of his brethren, return unto the sons of Israel.
4 Og han skal stå og vokte sin hjord i Herrens kraft, i Herrens, sin Guds navns høihet; og de skal sitte i ro, for nu skal han være stor like til jordens ender.
Then shall he stand, and tend his flock in the strength of Yahweh, In the excellency of the name of Yahweh his God, have they endured, —For, now, shall he be great unto the ends of the earth;
5 Og han skal være fred; når Assur kommer inn i vårt land, og når han treder inn i våre palasser, så reiser vi mot ham syv hyrder, ja åtte menneskefyrster,
So shall this one be Prosperity. As for Assyria—when he shall enter our land, and when he shall tread down in our palaces, then will we raise up against him, seven shepherds, and eight princes of mankind.
6 og de skal herje Assurs land med sverd og Nimrods land i dets porter; og han skal frelse fra Assur når han kommer i vårt land, og når han treder inn på våre enemerker.
Then shall they shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof, —So shall he deliver from Assyria, when he shall enter our land, and when he shall tread down within our bounds.
7 Og Jakobs rest skal være midt iblandt mange folk som dugg fra Herren, som en regnskur på urter, som ikke bier på nogen og ikke venter på menneskenes barn.
And, the remnant of Jacob, shall be, in the midst of many peoples, as dew from Yahweh, as myriad drops on plants, —which tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of Adam.
8 Og Jakobs rest skal være blandt hedningefolkene, midt iblandt mange folk, som en løve blandt skogens dyr, som en ungløve blandt fårehjorder, som trår ned og sønderriver hvor den farer frem, og det er ingen som redder.
And, the remnant of Jacob, shall be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, as a lion among the beasts of the jungle, as a young lion among flocks of sheep, —who, if he passeth by, both treadeth down—and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.
9 Høi være din hånd over dine motstandere! Måtte alle dine fiender bli utryddet!
Let thy hand be uplifted against thine adversaries, —and, all thine enemies, shall be cut off.
10 Og det skal skje på den dag, sier Herren, at jeg vil utrydde alle de hester du har, og tilintetgjøre dine vogner.
And it shall come to pass, in that day, Declareth Yahweh, That I will cut off thy horses out of thy midst, —and will destroy thy chariots;
11 Og jeg vil utrydde byene i ditt land og bryte ned alle dine festninger.
And will cut off the cities of thy land, —and will pull down all thy fortresses;
12 Og jeg vil utrydde all trolldom hos dig, og folk som spår av skyene, skal ikke lenger finnes hos dig.
And will cut off incantations, out of thy hand, —and, users of hidden arts, shalt thou not have;
13 Og jeg vil utrydde dine utskårne billeder og dine billedstøtter av ditt land, og du skal ikke mere tilbede dine henders verk.
And I will cut off thine images and thy pillars out of thy midst, —and thou shalt not bow thyself down, any more, to the work of thine own hands;
14 Og jeg vil rive op Astartebilledene i ditt land og ødelegge dine byer.
And I will uproot thy Sacred Stems out of thy midst, —and will destroy thy cities:
15 Og jeg vil i vrede og harme ta hevn over de hedningefolk som ikke vilde høre.
Then will I execute, with anger and with indignation, vengeance upon the nations, —of which they have not heard.
