1 I Mispa hadde Israels menn svoret: Ingen av oss skal gi nogen i Benjamin sin datter til hustru.
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, Not any of us shall give his daughter unto Benjamin for wife.
2 Men da folket kom til Betel, satt de der for Guds åsyn til om aftenen, og de gråt høit og lenge
And the people came to Beth-el, and abode there till the evening, before God, and they lifted up their voices, and wept with a great lamentation;
3 og sa: Herre, Israels Gud, hvorfor har dette hendt i Israel at det i dag fattes en hel stamme av Israel?
And they said, Wherefore, O Lord, God of Israel, is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be lacking this day out of Israel one tribe?
4 Den følgende dag stod folket tidlig op og bygget et alter der og ofret brennoffer og takkoffer.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.
5 Og Israels barn sa: Hvem var det blandt alle Israels stammer som ikke kom op til Herren med menigheten? For de hadde svoret en dyr ed at den som ikke kom op til Herren i Mispa, han skulde late livet.
And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the Lord? For there had been taken the great oath concerning him that came not up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6 Det gjorde Israels barn ondt for Benjamin, deres bror, og de sa: Idag er det hugget bort en stamme av Israel.
And the children of Israel felt regret for Benjamin their brother, and they said, One tribe hath this day been cut down from Israel.
7 Hvad skal vi gjøre for dem som er tilbake, så de kan få sig hustruer, siden vi har svoret ved Herren at vi ikke vil gi dem nogen av våre døtre til ekte?
What shall we do as respecteth wives for those that remain, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will give none of our daughters unto them for wives?
8 Så sa de: Var det nogen blandt Israels ætter som ikke kom op til Herren i Mispa? Da fikk de vite at fra Jabes i Gilead var ingen kommet til leiren, til møtet.
And they said, what one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto the Lord to Mizpah? And, behold, there had not come to the camp a man from Yabesh-gil'ad to the assembly.
9 For da folket blev mønstret, viste det sig at ingen av innbyggerne i Jabes i Gilead var der.
For the people were numbered, and, behold, there was not present a man of the inhabitants of Yabesh-gil'ad.
10 Da sendte menigheten tolv tusen mann av krigsfolket dit og bød dem: Dra avsted og slå innbyggerne i Jabes i Gilead med sverdets egg, også kvinner og barn!
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand persons of the valiant men, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Yabesh-gil'ad with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
11 Således skal I gjøre: Alt mannkjønn og hver kvinne som har hatt samleie med nogen mann, skal I slå med bann.
And this is the thing that ye shall do, every male, and every woman that hath known [man] by lying with him, shall ye devote.
12 Da fant de blandt innbyggerne i Jabes i Gilead fire hundre jomfruer som ikke hadde vært nær nogen mann og hatt samleie med ham; dem tok de med sig til leiren i Silo i Kana'ans land.
And they found among the inhabitants of Yabesh-gil'ad four hundred young virgins that had not known man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 Og hele menigheten sendte bud til Benjamins barn, som var på Rimmons klippe, og lovte dem fred.
And the whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin that were on the rock Rimmon, and offered them peace.
14 Da vendte Benjamin med én gang tilbake, og de gav dem de kvinner som de hadde latt bli i live blandt kvinnene i Jabes i Gilead; men det blev ikke nok for dem.
And Benjamin returned at that time: and they gave unto them the wives whom they had saved alive out of the women of Yabesh-gil'ad; but they found not sufficient for them in this way.
15 Og det gjorde folket ondt for Benjamin; for Herren hadde gjort et skår i Israels stammer.
And the people felt regret for Benjamin; because that the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Og menighetens eldste sa: Hvad skal vi gjøre for dem som ennu er tilbake, så de kan få sig hustruer, siden alle kvinner i Benjamin er utryddet?
And the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for those that remain as respecteth wives; because the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?
17 Og de sa: Benjamins arvedel skal høre de undkomne til, så ikke en hel stamme i Israel skal utslettes.
And they said, Their inheritance must be secured for Benjamin, that not a tribe may be blotted out from Israel.
18 Men vi kan ikke gi dem nogen av våre døtre til ekte. For Israels barn har svoret: Forbannet være den som gir nogen av Benjamin sin datter til hustru!
Nevertheless we ourselves are not able to give them wives of our daughters; for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
19 Så sa de: År for år holdes det jo en høitid for Herren i Silo, som ligger nordenfor Betel, østenfor alfarveien som fører fra Betel op til Sikem, og sønnenfor Lebona.
And they said, Behold, there is a feast of the Lord in Shiloh from year to year [at a place] which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
20 Og de sa til Benjamins barn: Gå og legg eder på lur i vingårdene
And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go ye and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21 og pass på, og når I ser Silos døtre gå ut til dans, da skal I springe frem fra vingårdene og røve eder hver sin hustru blandt Silos døtre og så dra hjem til Benjamins land.
And look out, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh go out to dance in dances: then come ye forth out of the vineyards, and snatch you every man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go then to the land of Benjamin.
22 Og når deres fedre eller brødre kommer og vil gå i rette med oss, da skal vi si til dem: Unn oss dem! For vi har ikke alle fått oss hustruer i krigen, og I har jo ikke selv gitt dem pikene; da vilde I nu være skyldige.
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to contend with us, that we will say unto them, Be favorable unto them for our sakes; because we took not for each man his wife in the war; [and] because ye yourselves did not give them unto them, that ye should at this time be guilty.
23 Og Benjamins barn gjorde således og tok sig hver sin hustru, så mange som de var, blandt de dansende kvinner som de røvet; og de drog avsted og vendte tilbake til sin arvedel og bygget op igjen byene og blev boende der.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took themselves wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they had stolen away; and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and rebuilt the cities, and dwelt in them.
24 På samme tid reiste Israels barn også derfra, hver til sin stamme og sin ætt; de drog bort derfra, hver til sin arvedel.
And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.
25 I de dager var det ingen konge i Israel; hver mann gjorde hvad rett var i hans øine.
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did what was right in his own eyes.
