Josvas 9
1 Da de nu fikk høre dette alle kongene som bodde vestenfor Jordan, i fjellbygdene og i lavlandet og på hele kysten av det store hav til midt for Libanon - hetittene og amorittene, kana'anittene, ferisittene, hevittene og jebusittene -
And when all the Kings that were beyonde Iorden, in the mountaines and in the valleis, and by all the coastes of the great Sea ouer against Lebanon (as the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites) heard thereof,
2 da samlet de sig alle som én for å stride mot Josva og Israel.
They gathered themselues together, to fight against Ioshua, and against Israel with one accord.
3 Men da innbyggerne i Gibeon hørte hvad Josva hadde gjort med Jeriko og Ai,
But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Ioshua had done vnto Iericho, and to Ai.
4 da gikk de på sin side frem med list: De tok avsted og gav sig ut for sendebud; de la utslitte sekker på sine asener og utslitte, sprukne og bøtede vinsekker;
And therefore they wrought craftily: for they went, and fayned themselues ambassadours, and tooke olde sackes vpon their asses, and olde bottels for wine, both rent and bound vp,
5 de tok utslitte og lappede sko på sine føtter og hadde utslitte klær på sig, og alt brødet de hadde til reisekost, var tørt og smuldret.
And olde shoes and clouted vpon their feete: also the raiment vpon them was old, and all their prouision of bread was dried, and mouled.
6 Således drog de til Josva i leiren ved Gilgal og sa til ham og Israels menn: Vi kommer fra et land langt borte; gjør nu en pakt med oss!
So they came vnto Ioshua into the hoste to Gilgal, and said vnto him, and vnto the men of Israel, Wee be come from a farre countrey: nowe therefore make a league with vs.
7 Da sa Israels menn til hevittene: Kanskje bor I her midt iblandt oss; hvorledes kan vi da gjøre nogen pakt med eder?
Then the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, It may be that thou dwellest among vs, how then can I make a league with thee?
8 Da sa de til Josva: Vi vil være dine tjenere. Og Josva sa til dem: Hvem er I, og hvor kommer I fra?
And they said vnto Ioshua, We are thy seruants. Then Ioshua saide vnto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye?
9 De svarte: Dine tjenere kommer fra et land langt, langt borte, for Herrens, din Guds navns skyld; for vi har hørt ryktet om ham og alt det han har gjort i Egypten,
And they answered him, From a very farre countrey thy seruants are come for the Name of the Lord thy God: for we haue heard his fame and all that he hath done in Egypt,
10 og alt det han har gjort med begge amoritter-kongene østenfor Jordan, Sihon, kongen i Hesbon, og Og, kongen i Basan, som bodde i Astarot.
And all that he hath done to the two Kings of the Amorites that were beyonde Iorden, to Sihon King of Heshbon, and to Og King of Bashan, which were at Ashtaroth.
11 Derfor sa våre eldste og alle vårt lands innbyggere til oss: Ta reisekost med eder og gå dem i møte og si til dem: Vi vil være eders tjenere; gjør nu en pakt med oss!
Wherefore our elders, and all the inhabitants of our countrey spake to vs, saying, Take vitailes with you for the iourney, and go to meete them, and say vnto them, Wee are your seruants: now therefore make ye a league with vs.
12 Her ser I vårt brød; det var varmt da vi tok det med oss hjemmefra til reisekost den dag vi drog avsted til eder, men se nu hvor tørt og smuldret det er!
This our bread we tooke it hote with vs for vittailes out of our houses, the day we departed to come vnto you: but nowe beholde, it is dried, and it is mouled.
13 Og her ser I våre vinsekker; de var nye da vi fylte dem, men nu er de sprukket! Og her ser I våre klær og våre sko; de er blitt utslitt på denne lange, lange reise.
Also these bottels of wine which we filled, were newe, and lo, they be rent, and these our garments and our shooes are olde, by reason of the exceeding great iourney.
14 Da tok mennene og smakte på deres reisekost; men Herren spurte de ikke til råds.
And the men accepted their tale concerning their vittailes, and counselled not with the mouth of the Lord.
15 Og Josva tilsa dem fred og gjorde pakt med dem om at de skulde få leve; og menighetens høvdinger tilsvor dem det.
So Ioshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, that he would suffer them to liue: also the Princes of the Congregation sware vnto them.
16 Men da tre dager var gått efterat de hadde gjort pakt med dem, fikk de vite at de hørte hjemme der i nærheten og bodde midt iblandt dem.
But at the end of three dayes, after they had made a league with them, they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
17 For da Israels barn brøt op, kom de den tredje dag til deres byer; det var Gibeon og Hakkefira og Be'erot og Kirjat-Jearim.
And the children of Israel tooke their iourney, and came vnto their cities the third day, and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth and Kiriath-iearim.
18 Men Israels barn slo dem ikke ihjel, fordi menighetens høvdinger hadde tilsvoret dem fred ved Herren, Israels Gud. Da knurret hele menigheten mot høvdingene;
And the children of Israel slewe them not, because the Princes of the Congregation had sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: wherefore all the Congregation murmured against the Princes.
19 men alle høvdingene sa til hele menigheten: Vi har tilsvoret dem fred ved Herren, Israels Gud, og nu kan vi ikke legge hånd på dem.
Then all the Princes said vnto all the Congregation, We haue sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: nowe therefore we may not touch them.
20 Således vil vi gjøre med dem: Vi vil la dem få leve, forat det ikke skal komme vrede over oss for den eds skyld som vi har svoret dem.
But this we wil doe to them, and let them liue, least the wrath be vpon vs because of the othe which we sware vnto them.
21 Høvdingene sa altså til dem: De skal få leve. Så blev de vedhuggere og vannbærere for hele menigheten, således som høvdingene hadde sagt til dem.
And the Princes sayd vnto them againe, Let them liue, but they shall hewe wood, and drawe water vnto all the Congregation, as the Princes appoint them.
22 Da kalte Josva dem for sig og sa til dem: Hvorfor narret I oss og sa: Vi bor langt, langt borte fra eder, og så bor I midt iblandt oss?
Ioshua then called them, and talked with them, and sayd, Wherefore haue ye beguiled vs, saying, We are very farre from you, when ye dwel among vs?
23 Derfor skal I nu være forbannet; ingen av eder skal slippe for å være træl og hugge ved og bære vann til min Guds hus.
Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.
24 De svarte Josva og sa: Dine tjenere hadde fått vite at Herren din Gud hadde sagt til Moses, sin tjener, at han vilde gi eder hele landet og utrydde alle landets innbyggere for eder; da blev vi så redde for at I skulde ta vårt liv; derfor gjorde vi dette.
And they answered Ioshua, and sayd, Because it was tolde thy seruants, that the Lord thy God had commanded his seruant Moses to giue you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land out of your sight, therefore we were exceeding sore afraid for our liues at the presence of you, and haue done this thing:
25 Men nu er vi i din hånd; gjør med oss som det er godt og rett i dine øine!
And beholde nowe, we are in thine hand: doe as it seemeth good and right in thine eyes to doe vnto vs.
26 Og han gjorde således med dem; han reddet dem av Israels barns hånd, så de ikke slo dem ihjel;
Euen so did he vnto them, and deliuered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slewe them not.
27 men Josva gjorde dem på den samme dag til vedhuggere og vannbærere for menigheten og for Herrens alter, på det sted han vilde utvelge, og det har de vært til denne dag.
And Ioshua appointed them that same day to be hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the Congregation, and for the altar of the Lord vnto this day, in the place which he should chuse.
