1 Mosebok 37
1 Men Jakob bodde i det land hvor hans far hadde bodd som fremmed, i Kana'ans land.
And Jacob dwelt in the land of Chanaan wherein his father sojourned.
2 Dette er historien om Jakobs ætt. Da Josef var sytten år gammel, gjætte han buskapen sammen med sine brødre; ung som han var, fulgte han med sønnene til Bilha og Silpa, sin fars hustruer; alt det onde som blev sagt om dem, gikk han til deres far med.
And these are his generations: Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being but a boy: and he was with the sons of Bala and of Zelpha his father’s wives: and he accused his brethren to his father of a most wicked crime.
3 Men Israel hadde Josef kjær fremfor alle sine sønner, fordi han var hans alderdoms sønn; og han hadde latt gjøre en sid kjortel til ham.
Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had him in his old age: and he made him a coat of divers colours.
4 Og da hans brødre så at deres far hadde ham mere kjær enn alle hans brødre, hatet de ham og kunde ikke tale vennlig til ham.
And his brethren seeing that he was loved by his father, more than all his sons, hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.
5 Engang hadde Josef en drøm, som han fortalte sine brødre; da hatet de ham enda mere.
Now it fell out also that he told his brethren a dream, that he had dreamed: which occasioned them to hate him the more.
6 Han sa til dem: Hør nu hvad jeg har drømt:
And he said to them: Hear my dream which I dreamed.
7 Jeg syntes vi bandt kornbånd ute på akeren, og se, mitt kornbånd reiste sig op og blev stående, og eders kornbånd stod rundt omkring og bøide sig for mitt kornbånd.
I thought we were binding sheaves in the field: and my sheaf arose as it were, and stood, and your sheaves standing about, bowed down before my sheaf.
8 Da sa hans brødre til ham: Skal du kanskje være vår konge og råde over oss? Siden hatet de ham enda mere for hans drømmer og for hans ord.
His brethren answered: Shalt thou be our king? or shall we be subject to thy dominion? Therefore this matter of his dreams and words ministered nourishment to their envy and hatred.
9 Og han hadde ennu en annen drøm og fortalte den til sine brødre; han sa: Jeg hadde ennu en drøm, og se, solen og månen og elleve stjerner bøide sig for mig.
He dreamed also another dream, which he told his brethren, saying: I saw in a dream, as it were the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars worshipping me.
10 Og da han fortalte det til sin far og til sine brødre, skjente hans far på ham og sa til ham: Hvad er dette for en drøm du har hatt? Skal da jeg og din mor og dine brødre komme og bøie oss til jorden for dig?
And when he had told this to his father and brethren, his father rebuked him, and said: What meaneth this dream that thou hast dreamed? shall I and thy mother, and thy brethren worship thee upon the earth?
11 Og hans brødre var misunnelige på ham; men hans far gjemte det i sitt minne.
His brethren therefore envied him: but his father considered the thing with himself.
12 Engang gikk hans brødre avsted for å gjæte sin fars buskap i Sikem.
And when his brethren abode in Sichem feeding their father’s flocks,
13 Da sa Israel til Josef: Gjæter ikke dine brødre ved Sikem? Kom, jeg vil sende dig til dem. Og han svarte: Ja, her er jeg.
Israel said to him: Thy brethren feed the sheep in Sichem: come, I will send thee to them. And when he answered:
14 Da sa han til ham: Kjære, gå og se om det står vel til med dine brødre, og om det står vel til med buskapen, og kom så tilbake til mig med svar! Så sendte han ham avsted fra Hebron-dalen, og han kom til Sikem.
I am ready: he said to him: Go, and see if all things be well with thy brethren, and the cattle: and bring me word again what is doing. So being sent from the vale of Hebron, he came to Sichem:
15 Mens han nu vanket om på marken, møtte han en mann, og mannen spurte ham: Hvad leter du efter?
And a man found him there wandering in the field, and asked what he sought.
16 Han svarte: Jeg leter efter mine brødre; kjære, si mig hvor de gjæter!
But he answered: I seek my brethren; tell me where they feed the flocks.
17 Mannen sa: De har draget herfra; jeg hørte dem si: La oss gå til Dotan! Så gikk Josef efter sine brødre og fant dem i Dotan.
And the man said to him: They are departed from this place: for I heard them say: Let us go to Dothain. And Joseph went forward after his brethren, and found them in Dothain.
18 De så ham langt borte, og før han kom nær til dem, la de op råd om å drepe ham.
And when they saw him afar off, before he came nigh them, they thought to kill him.
19 De sa sig imellem: Se, der kommer denne drømmeren!
And said one to another: Behold the dreamer cometh.
20 Kom nu og la oss slå ham ihjel og kaste ham ned i en av brønnene her, og så vil vi si: Et vilt dyr har ett ham op. Så får vi se hvad det blir av hans drømmer.
Come, let us kill him, and cast him into some old pit: and we will say: Some evil beast hath devoured him: and then it shall appear what his dreams avail him:
21 Da Ruben hørte dette, vilde han fri ham ut av deres hender og sa: La oss ikke slå ham ihjel!
And Ruben hearing this, endeavoured to deliver him out of their hands, and said:
22 Og han sa til dem: Utøs ikke blod, kast ham ned i denne brønn her i ørkenen, men legg ikke hånd på ham - for han vilde fri ham ut av deres hånd og føre ham tilbake til hans far.
Do not take away his life, nor shed his blood: but cast him into this pit, that is in the wilderness, and keep your hands harmless: now he said this, being desirous to deliver him out of their hands and to restore him to his father.
23 Da nu Josef kom til sine brødre, klædde de av ham hans kjortel, den side kjortel som han hadde på.
And as soon as he came to his brethren, they forthwith stript him of his outside coat, that was of divers colours:
24 Og de tok og kastet ham ned i brønnen; men brønnen var tom, det var intet vann i den.
And cast him into an old pit, where there was no water.
25 Så satte de sig til å holde måltid; og da de så op, fikk de se et reisefølge av ismaelitter som kom fra Gilead, og deres kameler bar krydderier og balsam og ladanum; de var på vei med dette ned til Egypten.
And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ismaelites on their way coming from Galaad, with their camels, carrying spices, and balm, and myrrh to Egypt.
26 Da sa Juda til sine brødre: Hvad gagner det at vi slår var bror ihjel og skjuler drapet?
And Juda said to his brethren: What will it profit us to kill our brother, and conceal his blood?
27 Kom og la oss selge ham til ismaelittene, men la oss ikke legge hånd på ham, han er jo vår egen kjødelige bror. Og hans brødre gjorde som han sa.
It is better that he be sold to the Ismaelites, and that our hands be not defiled: for he is our brother and our flesh. His brethren agreed to his words.
28 Da nu de midianittiske kjøbmenn kom forbi, drog de Josef op av brønnen, og så solgte de Josef til ismaelittene for tyve sekel sølv; og ismaelittene tok Josef med sig til Egypten.
And when the Madianite merchants passed by, they drew him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ismaelites, for twenty pieces of silver: and they led him into Egypt.
29 Da Ruben kom tilbake til brønnen, fikk han se at Josef ikke var i brønnen. Da sønderrev han sine klær,
And Ruben, returning to the pit, found not the boy:
30 og han gikk tilbake til sine brødre og sa: Gutten er der ikke, og jeg - hvor skal jeg gjøre av mig?
And rending his garments he went to his brethren, and said: The boy doth not appear and whither shall I go?
31 Så tok de Josefs kjortel og slaktet en gjetebukk og dyppet kjortelen i blodet.
And they took his coat, and dipped it in the blood of a kid, which they had killed:
32 Og de sendte den side kjortel hjem til faren og sa: Denne har vi funnet; se efter om det ikke er din sønns kjortel!
Sending some to carry it to their father, and to say: This we have found: see whether it be thy son’s coat, or not.
33 Og han kjente den igjen og sa: Jo, det er min sønns kjortel; et vilt dyr har ett ham op, Josef er visselig revet ihjel!
And the father acknowledging it, said: It is my son’s coat, an evil wild beast hath eaten him, a beast hath devoured Joseph.
34 Og Jakob sønderrev sine klær og bandt sekk om sine lender og sørget over sin sønn i lang tid.
And tearing his garments, he put on sackcloth, mourning for his son a long time.
35 Og alle hans sønner og alle hans døtre kom for å trøste ham; men han vilde ikke la sig trøste; han sa: Med sorg må jeg fare ned til min sønn i dødsriket. Og hans far gråt over ham. (Sheol h7585)
And all his children being gathered together to comfort their father in his sorrow, he would not receive comfort, but said: I will go down to my son into hell, mourning. And whilst he continued weeping, (Sheol h7585)
36 Men midianittene solgte ham i Egypten til Potifar, som var hoffmann hos Farao og høvding over livvakten.
The Madianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Putiphar, an eunuch of Pharao, captain of the soldiers.
