1 Nogen tid efter, under perserkongen Artaxerxes' regjering, drog Esras, sønn av Seraja, sønn av Asarja, sønn av Hilkias,
And after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king of Persia, Ezra the son of Serayah, the son of 'Azaryah, the son of Chilkiyah,
2 sønn av Sallum, sønn av Sadok, sønn av Akitub,
The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Achitub,
3 sønn av Amarja, sønn av Asarja, sønn av Merajot,
The son of Amaryah, the son of 'Azaryah, the son of Merayoth,
4 sønn av Serahja, sønn av Ussi, sønn av Bukki,
The son of Zerachyah, the son of 'Uzzi, the son of Bukki,
5 sønn av Abisua, sønn av Pinehas, sønn av Eleasar, sønn av ypperstepresten Aron -
The son of Abishua', the son of Phinehas, the son of Elazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest:
6 denne Esras drog op fra Babel. Han var en skriftlærd mann, vel kjent med Mose lov, den som Herren, Israels Gud, hadde gitt. Kongen gav ham alt det han bad om; for Herren hans Gud holdt sin hånd over ham.
This 'Ezra went up from Babylon; and he was a practised expounder in the law of Moses, which the Lord the God of Israel hath given; and the king gave him, according to the hand of the Lord his God upon him, all his request.
7 Nogen av Israels barn og av prestene, levittene, sangerne, dørvokterne og tempeltjenerne drog med ham op til Jerusalem i kong Artaxerxes' syvende år.
And there went up some of the children of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the gate-keepers, and the temple-servants, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of king Artaxerxes.
8 Han kom til Jerusalem i den femte måned; det var i kongens syvende år.
And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.
9 For på den første dag i den første måned begynte han å ordne alt til ferden fra Babel, og på den første dag i den femte måned kom han til Jerusalem; for hans Gud holdt sin gode hånd over ham.
For on the first day of the first month was the commencement of the expedition from Babylon, and on the first day of the fifth month came he to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him.
10 For Esras hadde satt sin hu til å granske Herrens lov og gjøre efter den og til å lære folk lov og rett i Israel.
For 'Ezra had directed his heart to inquire in the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and ordinances.
11 Dette er en avskrift av det brev som kong Artaxerxes gav presten Esras, den skriftlærde, som var kyndig i de bud og lover som Herren hadde gitt Israel:
Now this is the copy of the letter which king Artaxerxes gave unto 'Ezra the priest, the expounder of the law, the expounder of the words of the commandments of the Lord, and of his statutes for Israel.
12 Artaxerxes, kongenes konge, til presten Esras, han som er full-lært i himmelens Guds lov, og så videre.
Artaxerxes, the king of kings, unto 'Ezra the priest, the expounder of the law of the God of heaven, the perfect, and so forth.
13 Jeg har gitt befaling om at alle de av Israels folk og av dets prester og levitter i mitt rike som har lyst til å dra til Jerusalem, kan dra med dig,
By me is the order given, that every one who is freely willing in my kingdom out of the people of Israel, and their priests and Levites, to go up to Jerusalem, may go up with thee:
14 siden du er sendt av kongen og hans syv rådgivere til å se efter hvorledes det er med Juda og Jerusalem, efter din Guds lov, som du har i hende,
Forasmuch as thou art sent on the part of the king, and of his seven counsellors, to make inquiry concerning Judah and Jerusalem, according to the law of thy God which is in thy hand;
15 og til å føre dit det sølv og gull som kongen og hans rådgivere frivillig har gitt Israels Gud, han som har sin bolig i Jerusalem,
And to carry the silver and gold, which the king and his counsellors have freely offered unto the God of Israel, whose habitation is in Jerusalem.
16 og likeledes alt det sølv og gull som du kan få i hele Babels landskap, og de frivillige gaver som folket og prestene vil gi til sin Guds hus i Jerusalem.
And all [freewill offerings of] silver and gold that thou canst find in all the province of Babylon, with the freewill offerings which the people and the priests offer willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem.
17 Derfor skal du for disse penger samvittighetsfullt kjøpe okser, værer og lam med tilhørende matoffere og drikkoffere; og du skal ofre dem på alteret i eders Guds hus i Jerusalem.
Therefore mayest thou buy speedily with this money bullocks, rams, lambs, with their meat-offerings and their drink-offerings, and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.
18 Og hvad du og dine brødre finner det riktig å gjøre med resten av sølvet og gullet, det kan I gjøre efter eders Guds vilje.
And whatsoever shall seem good to thee, and to thy brethren, to do with the rest of the silver and the gold, that do according to the will of your God.
19 Men de kar som du har fått til tjenesten i din Guds hus, dem skal du gi fra dig for Jerusalems Guds åsyn.
And the vessels which have been given unto thee for the service of the house of thy God, deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem.
20 Hvad du ellers må utrede til din Guds hus av nødvendige utgifter, det skal du utrede av kongens skattkammer.
And the remainder that will yet be needful for the house of thy God, which thou shalt have occasion to procure, procure out of the King's treasure-house.
21 Og jeg, kong Artaxerxes, har gitt befaling til alle skattmestere hinsides elven at alt hvad presten Esras, han som er kyndig i himmelens Guds lov, krever av eder, det skal nøiaktig ydes,
And by me, me King Artaxerxes, is the order given unto all the treasurers who are beyond the river, that whatsoever 'Ezra the priest, the expounder of the law of the God of heaven, may demand of you, shall be done speedily.
22 inntil hundre talenter sølv, hundre kor hvete, hundre bat vin og hundre bat olje, og salt uten foreskrevet mål.
Up to one hundred talents of silver, and up to one hundred cors of wheat, and up to one hundred baths of wine, and up to one hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing it.
23 Alt hvad himmelens Gud befaler, det skal nøiaktig utføres for himmelens Guds hus, så det ikke skal komme vrede over kongens og hans sønners rike.
Whatsoever is ordered by the God of heaven shall be carefully done for the house of the God of heaven; for why should there be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons?
24 Og eder lar vi vite at ingen skal ha makt til å pålegge nogen av prestene, levittene, sangerne, dørvokterne, tempeltjenerne eller nogen annen som har en tjeneste ved dette Guds hus, skatt, toll eller veipenger.
And to you make we it known, that on any of the priests and Levites, singers, gate-keepers, and temple-servants, or ministers of this house of God, no one shall be empowered to impose any tax, tribute, or toll.
25 Og du, Esras, skal efter den visdom du har fått av din Gud, innsette dommere og lovkyndige til å dømme alt folket hinsides elven, alle dem som kjenner din Guds lover; og om nogen ikke kjenner dem, så skal I lære ham å kjenne dem.
And thou, 'Ezra, according to the wisdom of thy God which is in thy hand, appoint judges and magistrates, who are to judge all the people that are beyond the river, all such as know the laws of thy God; and make ye them known to those that know them not.
26 Og om nogen ikke gjør efter din Guds lov og efter kongens lov, så skal der samvittighetsfullt holdes dom over ham, enten det nu fører til døden eller til landflyktighet eller til bøter eller til bånd og fengsel.
And if there be any one who will not execute the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let justice be speedily executed upon him, whether it be unto death or to banishment, or to a fine on goods, or to imprisonment.
27 Lovet være Herren, våre fedres Gud, som gav kongen slikt i sinne, så Herrens hus i Jerusalem kunde bli prydet,
Blessed be the Lord the God of our fathers, who hath put the like of this in the heart of the king, to glorify the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem;
28 og som lot mig finne nåde hos kongen og hans rådgivere og hos alle kongens mektige høvdinger! Jeg kjente mig sterk, fordi Herren min Gud holdt sin hånd over mig, og jeg fikk samlet nogen av Israels overhoder til å dra op sammen med mig.
And who hath extended kindness unto me before the king and his counsellors, and before all the mighty princes of the king: and I strengthened myself according to the hand of the Lord my God upon me, and I gathered together out of Israel principal men to go up with me.
