1 Agrippa sa da til Paulus: Du har lov til å tale om dig selv. Da strakte Paulus sin hånd ut og sa til sitt forsvar:
Agrippa said to Paul, “You have permission to speak for yourself.” Then Paul stretched out his hand and began his defense:
2 Mot alt det som jøder anklager mig for, kong Agrippa, akter jeg mig lykkelig at jeg idag skal forsvare mig for dig,
“King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today to defend myself against all the accusations of the Jews,
3 for du kjenner best alle skikker og spørsmål iblandt jødene; derfor ber jeg dig at du vil høre tålmodig på mig.
especially since you are acquainted with all the Jewish customs and controversies. I beg you, therefore, to listen to me patiently.
4 Mitt liv fra ungdommen av, som jeg fra første stund har levd iblandt mitt folk og i Jerusalem, kjenner alle jøder,
Surely all the Jews know how I have lived from the earliest days of my youth, among my own people and in Jerusalem.
5 da de forut vet om mig, like fra først av, om de bare vil komme frem med sitt vidnesbyrd, at jeg levde efter det strengeste parti av vår gudsdyrkelse, som fariseer.
They have known me for a long time and can testify, if they are willing, that I lived as a Pharisee, adhering to the strictest sect of our religion.
6 Og nu står jeg her og skal dømmes for håp på det løfte som av Gud er gitt fedrene,
And now I stand on trial because of my hope in the promise that God made to our fathers,
7 det som vårt tolvstamme-folk under uavlatelig gudstjeneste natt og dag håper å vinne frem til; for dette håp tiltales jeg av jøder, konge!
the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to realize as they earnestly serve God day and night. It is because of this hope, O king, that I am accused by the Jews.
8 Hvorfor aktes det for utrolig iblandt eder at Gud opvekker døde?
Why would any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?
9 Jeg for min del trodde nu at jeg burde gjøre meget imot Jesu, nasareerens navn;
So then, I too was convinced that I ought to do all I could to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
10 det gjorde jeg også i Jerusalem, og både kastet jeg mange av de hellige i fengsel, efterat jeg hadde fått fullmakt av yppersteprestene, og når de skulde slåes ihjel, gav jeg min stemme til det,
And that is what I did in Jerusalem. With authority from the chief priests I put many of the saints in prison, and when they were condemned to death, I cast my vote against them.
11 og omkring i alle synagogene tvang jeg dem ofte ved straff til å spotte, og jeg raste enn mere mot dem og forfulgte dem like til de utenlandske byer.
I frequently had them punished in the synagogues, and I tried to make them blaspheme. In my raging fury against them, I even went to foreign cities to persecute them.
12 Under dette drog jeg da også til Damaskus med makt og myndighet fra yppersteprestene;
In this pursuit I was on my way to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.
13 og midt på dagen så jeg på veien, konge, et lys fra himmelen, klarere enn solen, stråle omkring mig og dem som reiste med mig,
About noon, O king, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions.
14 og da vi alle falt til jorden, hørte jeg en røst si til mig på det hebraiske mål: Saul! Saul! hvorfor forfølger du mig? det blir hårdt for dig å stampe mot brodden.
We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me in Hebrew, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’
15 Jeg sa da: Hvem er du, Herre? Og Herren sa: Jeg er Jesus, han som du forfølger.
‘Who are You, Lord?’ I asked. ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied.
16 Men reis dig op og stå på dine føtter! for derfor åpenbarte jeg mig for dig: for å utkåre dig til tjener og vidne både om det som du har sett, og om det for hvis skyld jeg vil åpenbare mig for dig,
‘But get up and stand on your feet. For I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen from Me and what I will show you.
17 idet jeg frir dig ut fra folket og hedningene, som jeg sender dig til
I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them
18 for å oplate deres øine, så de kan vende sig fra mørke til lys og fra Satans makt til Gud, forat de kan få syndenes forlatelse og arvelodd blandt dem som er helliget ved troen på mig.
to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those sanctified by faith in Me.’
19 Derfor, kong Agrippa, blev jeg ikke ulydig mot det himmelske syn;
So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.
20 men både for dem i Damaskus først og for Jerusalem og i hele Judeas land og for hedningene forkynte jeg at de skulde omvende sig og komme tilbake til Gud og gjøre gjerninger som er omvendelsen verdige.
First to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, then to everyone in the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I declared that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy of their repentance.
21 For disse tings skyld grep nogen jøder mig i templet og søkte å slå mig ihjel.
For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me.
22 Så har jeg da fått hjelp fra Gud og står til denne dag og vidner både for liten og for stor, idet jeg ikke sier noget annet enn hvad profetene og Moses har sagt skulde skje:
But I have had God’s help to this day, and I stand here to testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen:
23 at Messias skulde lide, og at han som den første av de dødes opstandelse skulde forkynne lys for folket og for hedningene.
that the Christ would suffer, and as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to our people and to the Gentiles.”
24 Men da han forsvarte sig således, sier Festus med høi røst: Du er vanvittig, Paulus! din megen lærdom driver dig til vanvidd.
At this stage of Paul’s defense, Festus exclaimed in a loud voice, “You are insane, Paul! Your great learning is driving you to madness!”
25 Men han sier: Jeg er ikke vanvittig, mektigste Festus! men jeg taler sanne og sindige ord.
But Paul answered, “I am not insane, most excellent Festus; I am speaking words of truth and sobriety.
26 For kongen kjenner til disse ting, og til ham taler jeg også frimodig; for jeg kan ikke tro at noget av dette er ukjent for ham; dette er jo ikke skjedd i en avkrok.
For the king knows about these matters, and I can speak freely to him. I am confident that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.
27 Tror du, kong Agrippa, profetene? Jeg vet at du tror.
King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do.”
28 Men Agrippa sa til Paulus: Det mangler lite i at du overtaler mig til å bli en kristen.
Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Can you persuade me in such a short time to become a Christian?”
29 Paulus sa da: Jeg vilde ønske til Gud, enten det mangler lite eller meget, at ikke alene du, men også alle som hører mig idag, måtte bli slik som jeg er, bare uten disse lenker.
“Short time or long,” Paul replied, “I wish to God that not only you but all who hear me this day may become what I am, except for these chains.”
30 Da stod kongen op, og landshøvdingen og Berenike og de som satt der med dem,
Then the king and the governor rose, along with Bernice and those seated with them.
31 og de gikk til side og talte med hverandre og sa: Denne mann gjør ikke noget som fortjener død eller lenker.
On their way out, they said to one another, “This man has done nothing worthy of death or imprisonment.”
32 Og Agrippa sa til Festus: Denne mann kunde være løslatt, om han ikke hadde innanket sin sak for keiseren.
And Agrippa said to Festus, “This man could have been released if he had not appealed to Caesar.”
