1 Han kom da til Derbe og Lystra, og se, der var en disippel ved navn Timoteus, sønn av en jødisk kvinne som hadde tatt ved troen, og av en gresk far;
And he came to the city Derbe, and to Lystra. And there was a certain disciple there, whose name was Timothy, the son of a believing Jewess, but his father was a Gentile.
2 han hadde godt lov av brødrene i Lystra og Ikonium.
And all the disciples of Lystra and Iconium gave good testimony of him.
3 Ham vilde Paulus ha med sig på reisen, og han tok og omskar ham for de jøders skyld som var på de steder; for de visste alle at hans far var greker.
Him Paul was disposed to take with him: and he took him, and circumcised him, because of the Jews that were in that region; for they all knew that his father was a Gentile.
4 Efter som de nu drog fra by til by, påla de brødrene å holde de bud som var vedtatt av apostlene og de eldste i Jerusalem.
And as they went among the cities, they preached and taught them, that they should observe those injunctions which the legates and Elders at Jerusalem had written.
5 Så blev da menighetene styrket i troen, og vokste i tall for hver dag.
And so were the churches established in the faith, and were increased in number daily.
6 De drog nu igjennem Frygia og det galatiske land, fordi de blev hindret av den Hellige Ånd fra å tale ordet i Asia;
And they travelled through the regions of Phrygia and Galatia; and the Holy Spirit forbid them to speak the word of God in Asia.
7 og da de var kommet bortimot Mysia, prøvde de på å fare til Bitynia, men Jesu Ånd gav dem ikke lov;
And when they came into the region of Mysia, they were disposed to go from there into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus permitted them not.
8 så drog de da utenom Mysia og drog ned til Troas.
And when they departed from Mysia, they came down to the region of Troas.
9 Og et syn viste sig om natten for Paulus: Det stod en mann fra Makedonia og bad ham og sa: Kom over til Makedonia og hjelp oss!
And in a vision of the night, there appeared unto Paul, a man of Macedonia, who stood and besought him, saying: Come to Macedonia and help us.
10 Da han hadde sett synet, søkte vi straks å dra over til Makedonia; vi kunde skjønne at Herren hadde kalt oss til å forkynne evangeliet for dem.
And when Paul had seen this vision, immediately we were desirous to depart for Macedonia; because we inferred, that our Lord called us to preach to them.
11 Vi seilte da ut fra Troas og styrte rett frem til Samotrake, og den næste dag til Neapolis,
And we sailed from Troas, and came direct to Samothrace; and from there, on the following day, we came to the city Neapolis.
12 og derfra til Filippi, som er den første by i den del av Makedonia og en romersk koloni; der i byen blev vi da nogen tid.
And from there to Philippi, which is the chief city of Macedonia, and is a colony. And we remained in that city certain days.
13 På sabbatsdagen gikk vi utenfor porten, til en elv hvor de pleide å samles til bønn, og vi satte oss der og talte til de kvinner som var kommet sammen.
And on the sabbath day, we went without the gate of the city to the side of a river, because a house of prayer was seen there. And when we were seated, we conversed with the women who there assembled.
14 Og der var en kvinne ved navn Lydia, en purpur-kremmerske fra byen Tyatira, som dyrket Gud efter jødenes tro; hun hørte på, og Herren oplot hennes hjerte, så hun gav akt på det som blev talt av Paulus.
And a certain woman who feared God, a seller of purple, whose name was Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, was there. Her heart our Lord opened, and she hearkened to what Paul spake.
15 Da nu hun og hennes hus var blitt døpt, bad hun oss og sa: Så sant I holder mig for å være en som tror på Herren, så kom inn i mitt hus og ta ophold der! Og hun nødde oss.
And she was baptized, and her household. And she entreated us, saying: If ye are really persuaded that I have believed in our Lord, come and take lodging in my house. And she urged us much.
16 Men det skjedde engang vi drog ut til bedestedet, at vi møtte en trælkvinne som hadde en spådomsånd, og som hjalp sine herrer til stor inntekt ved å spå.
And it occurred that, as we were going to the house of prayer, a certain maid met us, who had a spirit of divination, and who procured for her lords great gain by the divination which she performed.
17 Hun fulgte efter Paulus og oss og ropte: Disse mennesker er den høieste Guds tjenere, som forkynner eder frelsens vei.
And she followed after Paul and us, and cried, saying: These men are the servants of the Most High God, and they announce to you the way of life.
18 Dette gjorde hun i mange dager. Da harmedes Paulus og vendte sig om og sa til ånden: Jeg byder dig i Jesu Kristi navn å fare ut av henne! Og den fór ut i samme stund.
And this she did many days. And Paul was indignant; and he said to that spirit, I command thee, in the name of Jesus Messiah, that thou come out of her. And it came out the same hour.
19 Men da hennes herrer så at deres håp om inntekt var ute, tok de fatt på Paulus og Silas og slepte dem avsted til torvet for å stille dem for retten,
And when her lords saw that the prospect of their gain from her was gone, they seized Paul and Silas, and dragging them along brought them to the market-place,
20 og de førte dem frem for styresmennene og sa: Disse mennesker forstyrrer rent vår by; de er jøder,
and set them before the prefects and chiefs of the city, and said: These men disturb our city; for they are Jews,
21 og forkynner skikker som vi ikke har lov til å ta imot eller leve efter, vi som er romere.
and they preach to us customs, which it is not lawful for us to receive and to practise, because we are Romans.
22 Folket reiste sig også imot dem; styresmennene rev da klærne av dem og lot dem hudstryke,
And a great company was collected against them. Then the prefects rent their garments, and commanded to scourge them.
23 og da de hadde gitt dem mange slag, kastet de dem i fengsel, og bød fangevokteren å passe godt på dem.
And when they had scourged them much, they cast them into the prison, and commanded the keeper of the prison to keep them with care.
24 Da han hadde fått dette bud, kastet han dem i det innerste fangerum og satte deres føtter fast i stokken.
And he, having received this command, carried and immured them in the inner part of the prison, and confined their feet in the stocks.
25 Men ved midnattstid holdt Paulus og Silas bønn og sang lovsanger til Gud, og fangene hørte på dem.
And at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and glorifying God: and the prisoners heard them.
26 Da kom det med ett et sterkt jordskjelv, så fengslets grunnvoller rystet, og straks sprang alle dører op, og alles lenker løstes.
And suddenly there was a great shaking, and the foundations of the prison were moved; and at once all the doors opened, and the bands of all were loosed.
27 Fangevokteren fór da op av søvne, og da han så fengslets dører åpne, drog han et sverd og vilde drepe sig, fordi han trodde at fangene var rømt.
And when the keeper of the prison awoke, and saw that the doors of the prison were open, he took a sword and sought to kill himself; because he supposed the prisoners had escaped.
28 Men Paulus ropte med høi røst: Gjør dig ikke noget ondt! vi er her alle.
But Paul called to him, in a loud voice, and said: Do thyself no harm, for we are all here.
29 Han bad da om lys og sprang inn, og han falt skjelvende ned for Paulus og Silas.
And he lighted for himself a lamp, and sprang and came in, trembling, and fell at the feet of Paul and Silas.
30 Og han førte dem utenfor og sa: Herrer! hvad skal jeg gjøre for å bli frelst?
And he brought them out, and said to them: My lords, what must I do, that I may have life?
31 De sa da: Tro på den Herre Jesus, sa skal du bli frelst, du og ditt hus!
And they said to him: Believe on the name of our Lord Jesus Messiah, and thou wilt have life, thou and thy house.
32 Og de talte Herrens ord til ham og til alle som var i hans hus
And they spoke the word of the Lord to him, and to all the members of his house.
33 Så tok han dem til sig i samme time på natten og vasket dem efter slagene, og straks blev han døpt med alle sine,
And the same hour of the night, he took and washed them from their stripes; and he was baptized immediately, he and all the members of his house.
34 og han førte dem op i sitt hus og satte et bord for dem, og frydet sig, efterat han med hele sitt hus var kommet til troen på Gud.
And he took them and brought them into his house, and set a table for them; and he rejoiced in the faith of God, he and all the members of his house.
35 Da det nu var blitt dag, sendte styresmennene bud med sine tjenere: Gi disse mennesker fri!
And when it was morning, the prefects sent rod-bearers to say to the superior of the prison: Let those men loose.
36 Fangevokteren fortalte da disse ord til Paulus: Styresmennene har sendt bud at I skal gis fri; så gå nu ut og dra bort i fred!
And when the superior of the prison heard it, he went in, and said the same thing to Paul; namely, that the prefects have sent word that ye be set free. And now, said he, Go ye out, and depart in peace.
37 Men Paulus sa til dem: De har hudstrøket oss for alles øine, uten lov og dom, vi som er romerske borgere; så har de kastet oss i fengsel, og nu jager de oss lønnlig bort? Nei, la dem selv komme og føre oss ut!
But Paul said to him: They have scourged us, unoffending men, and Romans, before all the world, and have cast us into prison; and now, do they secretly let us out? No, surely: but let them come themselves and bring us out.
38 Tjenerne meldte disse ord til styresmennene; da blev de redde, da de fikk høre at de var romerske borgere,
And the rod-bearers went and told to the prefects the words which were told to them: and when they heard that they were Romans, they were afraid,
39 og de kom og gav dem gode ord, og førte dem ut og bad dem fare fra byen.
and came to them, and entreated of them that they would come out, and that they would leave the city.
40 Så gikk de da ut av fengslet og gikk inn til Lydia, og efterat de hadde sett brødrene og formant dem, drog de avsted.
And when they came out from the prison, they entered the house of Lydia; and there they saw the brethren, and comforted them, and departed.
