2 Samuel 20

1 Nu traff det sig så at det på det sted var en illesinnet mann som hette Seba, sønn av Bikri, en benjaminitt. Han støtte i basunen og sa: Vi har ingen del i David og ingen lodd i Isais sønn; hver mann til sine telt, Israel!

And there happened to be there a base fellow whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. And he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse. Every man to his tents, O Israel.

2 Da forlot hver mann av Israel David og fulgte Seba, Bikris sønn, men Judas menn hang ved sin konge og fulgte ham fra Jordan like til Jerusalem.

So all the men of Israel went up from following David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri, but the men of Judah clung to their king, from the Jordan even to Jerusalem.

3 Så kom David hjem til Jerusalem. Og kongen tok de ti medhustruer som han hadde latt bli tilbake for å ta vare på huset, og lot dem bo i et hus for sig selv under varetekt; han forsørget dem med det nødvendige, men gikk ikke inn til dem. Der satt de nu innestengt til sin dødsdag og levde hele resten av sitt liv som enker.

And David came to his house at Jerusalem. And the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and put them in ward, and provided them with sustenance, but did not go in to them. So they were shut up to the day of their death, living in widowhood.

4 Så sa kongen til Amasa: Kall Judas menn sammen for mig innen tre dager og møt så selv frem her!

Then the king said to Amasa, Call the men of Judah together to me within three days, and be thou here present.

5 Amasa tok da avsted for å kalle Juda sammen; men han drygde lenger enn den tid som var fastsatt.

So Amasa went to call the men of Judah together, but he delayed longer than the set time which he had appointed him.

6 Da sa David til Abisai: Nu kommer Seba, Bikris sønn, til å gjøre oss mere ondt enn Absalom; ta du din herres menn og sett efter ham! Bare han ikke alt har funnet faste byer og har undsloppet oss!

And David said to Abishai, Now will Sheba the son of Bichri do us more harm than did Absalom. Take thou thy lord's servants, and pursue after him, lest he get him fortified cities, and escape out of our sight.

7 Så drog da Joabs menn og livvakten og alle de djerveste stridsmenn ut efter ham; de drog ut fra Jerusalem for å sette efter Seba, Bikris sønn.

And there went out after him Joab's men, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men. And they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

8 De var nettop kommet til den store sten ved Gibeon, da kom Amasa imot dem. Joab hadde på sig kappen som var hans vanlige drakt, og utenpå den et belte med et sverd i skjeden, fastbundet over hans lender, og da han gikk frem, falt det ut.

When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa came to meet them. And Joab was girded with his apparel of war that he had put on, and on it was a belt with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath of it. And as he went forth it fell out.

9 Og Joab sa til Amasa: Går det dig vel, bror? og grep med sin høire hånd fatt i Amasas skjegg for å kysse ham.

And Joab said to Amasa, Is it well with thee, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.

10 Men Amasa tok sig ikke i vare for sverdet som Joab hadde i hånden, og Joab stakk ham med det i underlivet, så hans innvoller rant ut på jorden. Han stakk ham ikke mere enn denne ene gang, så var han død. Derefter satte Joab og hans bror Abisai efter Seba, Bikris sønn.

But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand. So he smote him with it in the body, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again, and he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

11 Men en av Joabs unge menn blev stående hos Amasa og ropte: Hvem som holder med Joab, og som står på Davids side, følge Joab!

And there stood by him one of Joab's young men, and said, He who favors Joab, and he who is for David, let him follow Joab.

12 Men Amasa lå veltet i sitt blod midt på landeveien, og da mannen så at alt folket blev stående. flyttet han Amasa fra landeveien bort på marken og kastet et klæde over ham, fordi han så at enhver som kom bort til ham, blev stående.

And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him, when he saw that everyone who came by him stood still.

13 Da han var ført bort fra landeveien, gikk hver mann forbi og fulgte Joab for å sette efter Seba, Bikris sønn.

When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

14 Han drog frem gjennem alle Israels stammer til Abel og Bet-Ma'aka og hele Berim; og de samlet sig og fulgte også efter ham.

And he went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, and to Beth-maacah, and all the Berites. And they were gathered together, and also went after him.

15 Og de kom og kringsatte ham i Abel-Bet-Ma'aka og opkastet en voll mot byen; den støtte op mot yttermuren; og alt folket som var med Joab, var i ferd med å ødelegge muren for å få den til å falle.

And they came and besieged him in Abel of Beth-maacah, and they cast up a mound against the city, and it stood against the rampart. And all the people who were with Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.

16 Da ropte en klok kvinne fra byen: Hør, hør! Si til Joab: Kom nærmere, så jeg kan få tale med dig!

Then a wise woman out of the city cried out, Hear, hear. Say, I pray you, to Joab, Come near here, that I may speak with thee.

17 Da gikk han bort til henne, og kvinnen spurte: Er du Joab? Han svarte: Ja. Hun sa til ham: Hør din tjenerinnes ord! Han svarte: Jeg hører.

And he came near to her, and the woman said, Are thou Joab? And he answered, I am. Then she said to him, Hear the words of thy handmaid. And he answered, I do hear.

18 Da sa hun: Før pleide folk å si så: En skal spørre sig for i Abel, og så utførte de det.

Then she spoke, saying, They were accustomed to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at Abel, and so they ended the matter.

19 Jeg er en av de fredsommelige og trofaste i Israel; du søker å ødelegge en by, en mor i Israel, hvorfor vil du tilintetgjøre Herrens arv?

I am of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. Thou seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why will thou swallow up the inheritance of Jehovah?

20 Da svarte Joab og sa: Langt, langt være det fra mig at jeg skulde tilintetgjøre eller ødelegge.

And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow up or destroy.

21 Det har sig ikke så. Men en mann fra Efra'im-fjellet som heter Seba, sønn av Bikri, har løftet sin hånd mot kongen, mot David; la mig bare få ham, så skal jeg dra bort fra byen. Da sa kvinnen til Joab: Hans hode skal bli kastet ut til dig over muren.

The matter is not so, but a man of the hill-country of Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, has lifted up his hand against the king, even against David. Deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said to Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

22 Så gikk kvinnen med sitt kloke råd til alt folket, og de hugg hodet av Seba, Bikris sønn, og kastet det ut til Joab. Da støtte han i basunen, og de drog bort fra byen og spredte sig hver mann til sitt hjem; og Joab vendte tilbake til Jerusalem, til kongen.

Then the woman went to all the people in her wisdom. And they cut off the head of Sheba the son of Bichri, and threw it out to Joab. And he blew the trumpet, and they were dispersed from the city, every man to his tent. And Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

23 Joab var høvding over hele Israels hær, og Benaja, sønn av Jojada, var høvding over livvakten;

Now Joab was over all the army of Israel, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites,

24 Adoram hadde opsyn med dem som gjorde pliktarbeid, og Josafat, sønn av Akilud, var historieskriver;

and Adoram was over the men subject to task work, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was the recorder,

25 Seja var statsskriver, og Sadok og Abjatar var prester.

and Sheva was scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests,

26 Ja'iritten Ira var også prest hos David.

and also Ira the Jairite was chief minister to David.
