< हितोपदेश 20 >

1 दाखमद्य खिल्ली उडाउने कुरो हो र मदिराचाहिँ कचिङ्गाल मच्‍चाउने कुरो हो । मदिराद्वारा बहकाइने कोही पनि बुद्धिमान् हुँदैन ।
Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
2 राजाको डर गर्जिरहेको जवान सिंहको डरजस्तै हुन्छ । तिनलाई रिस उठाउनेले आफ्नो जीवन गुमाउँछ ।
The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion. He who provokes him to anger forfeits his own life.
3 द्वन्द्वलाई हटाउनु हरेकको लागि आदर हो, तर हरेक मूर्खचाहिँ तर्क-वितर्कमा फस्छ ।
It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.
4 अल्छेले शरद् ऋतुमा जोत्दैन । त्यसले कटनीको बेला फसल खोज्छ, तर केहीँ पाउने छैन ।
The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
5 मानवीय हृदयमा भएको उद्धेश्य गहिरो पानीजस्तै हो, तर समझशक्ति भएको मानिसले यसलाई बाहिर निकाल्ने छ ।
Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.
6 धैरेले आफू भक्त भएको घोषणा गर्छन्, तर कसले विश्‍वासयोग्य जन पाउन सक्छ?
Many men claim to be men of unfailing love, but who can find a faithful man?
7 धर्मात्मा आफ्नो सत्यनिष्‍ठामा चल्छ, र त्यसलाई पछ्याउने त्यसका छोराहरू आशिषित् हुने छन् ।
A righteous man walks in integrity. Blessed are his children after him.
8 न्यायको काम गर्दै सिंहासनमा बस्‍ने राजाले आफ्नो सामु भएका सबै खराबी आफ्नै आँखाले केलाउँछन् ।
A king who sits on the throne of judgment scatters away all evil with his eyes.
9 कसले भन्‍न सक्छ, “मैले मेरो हृदय शुद्ध राखेको छु । म मेरो पापबाट सफा छु?”
Who can say, “I have made my heart pure. I am clean and without sin”?
10 नमिल्ने नापहरू असमान ढकहरू दुवैलाई परमप्रभु घृणा गर्नुहुन्छ ।
Differing weights and differing measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.
11 एउटा बालकलाई पनि त्यसका गतिविधिहरूबाट त्यसको आचरण शुद्ध र सोझो छ कि छैन भनेर चिनिन्छ ।
Even a child makes himself known by his doings, whether his work is pure, and whether it is right.
12 सुन्‍ने कान र देख्‍ने आँखा दुवैलाई परमप्रभुले बनाउनुभयो ।
The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD has made even both of them.
13 निद्रालाई प्रेम नगर्, नत्रता तँ दरिद्र हुने छस् । तेरा आँखा खोल्, र तँसित खानलाई प्रशस्त हुने छ ।
Don’t love sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.
14 “यो खराब छ, यो खराब छ,” ग्राहकले भन्छ, तर पर पुगेपछि त्यसले घमण्ड गर्छ ।
“It’s no good, it’s no good,” says the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasts.
15 सुन छ, र प्रशस्त महङ्गा मणिहरू छन्, तर ज्ञानको ओठ बहुमूल्य रत्‍न हो ।
There is gold and abundance of rubies, but the lips of knowledge are a rare jewel.
16 परदेशीको जमानी बस्‍नेको खास्टो पनि खोस्‍नू, र त्यसले अनैतिक स्‍त्रीको लागि यसो गरेको भए त्यो धरौटी राख्‍नू ।
Take the garment of one who puts up collateral for a stranger; and hold him in pledge for a wayward woman.
17 छलद्वारा प्राप्‍त रोटीको स्वाद मिठो होला, तर पछि त्यसको मुखभरि रोडा हालेसरह हुन्छ ।
Fraudulent food is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.
18 सरसल्लाहद्वारा योजनाहरू स्थापित हुन्छन्, र बुद्धिमान् मार्ग-दर्शनद्वारा मात्र तैँले लडाइँ लड् ।
Plans are established by advice; by wise guidance you wage war!
19 कुरौटेले गुप्‍त कुराहरू बाहिर ल्याउँछ । त्यसैले धेरै कुरा गर्ने मानिसहरूसित सङ्गत नगर् ।
He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets; therefore don’t keep company with him who opens wide his lips.
20 कसैले आफ्नो बुबा वा आफ्नी आमालाई सराप्यो भने निस्पट्ट अन्धकारमा त्यसो बत्ती निभाइने छ ।
Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.
21 सुरुमा झट्टै प्राप्‍त गरेको पैतृक-सम्पत्तिले अन्त्यमा थोरै भलाइ गर्ने छ ।
An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning won’t be blessed in the end.
22 यसो नभन्, “म यस खराबीको बदला लिने छु ।” परमप्रभुको प्रतीक्षा गर्, र उहाँले तँलाई छुटकारा दिनुहुने छ ।
Don’t say, “I will pay back evil.” Wait for the LORD, and he will save you.
23 परमप्रभुले असमान ढकहरूलाई घृणा गर्नुहुन्छ, र बेइमान तराजुहरू ठिक होइनन् ।
The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales are not pleasing.
24 मानिसका कदमहरू परमप्रभुद्वारा निर्देशित हुन्छन् भने तब त्यसले कसरी आफ्नो मार्ग बुझ्न सक्ला त?
A man’s steps are from the LORD; how then can man understand his way?
25 “यो कुरो पवित्र छ,” भनी हतारमा भन्‍ने र भाकल गरिसकेपछि मात्र त्यसको बारेमा सोच्नु मानिसको लागि पासो हुन्छ ।
It is a snare to a man to make a rash dedication, then later to consider his vows.
26 बुद्धिमान् राजाले दुष्‍टहरूलाई पन्साउँछन्, र तिनले अन्‍न चुट्ने चक्‍काले तिनीहरूलाई प्रहार गर्छन् ।
A wise king winnows out the wicked, and drives the threshing wheel over them.
27 मानिसको आत्मा परमप्रभुको बत्ती हो जसले त्यसका भित्री भागहरूको खोजी गर्छ ।
The spirit of man is the LORD’s lamp, searching all his innermost parts.
28 करारको विश्‍वसनीयता र भरोसाले राजालाई जोगाउँछ । प्रेमद्वारा नै तिनको सिंहासन सुरक्षित हुन्छ ।
Love and faithfulness keep the king safe. His throne is sustained by love.
29 युवाहरूको महिमा तिनीहरूको शक्ति हो, र पाकाहरूको शोभा तिनीहरूको फुलेको कपाल हो ।
The glory of young men is their strength. The splendor of old men is their gray hair.
30 चोट लगाउने मुक्‍काले खराबीलाई साफ गर्छ, र पिटाइले भित्री भागहरूलाई शुद्ध पार्छ ।
Wounding blows cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the innermost parts.
