हितोपदेश 20
1 दाखमद्य खिल्ली उडाउने कुरो हो र मदिराचाहिँ कचिङ्गाल मच्चाउने कुरो हो । मदिराद्वारा बहकाइने कोही पनि बुद्धिमान् हुँदैन ।
Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And he that reeleth with it is not wise.
2 राजाको डर गर्जिरहेको जवान सिंहको डरजस्तै हुन्छ । तिनलाई रिस उठाउनेले आफ्नो जीवन गुमाउँछ ।
The terror of a king is like the roaring of a lion; He who provoketh him sinneth against himself.
3 द्वन्द्वलाई हटाउनु हरेकको लागि आदर हो, तर हरेक मूर्खचाहिँ तर्क-वितर्कमा फस्छ ।
It is an honor to a man to cease from strife; Bur every fool rusheth into it.
4 अल्छेले शरद् ऋतुमा जोत्दैन । त्यसले कटनीको बेला फसल खोज्छ, तर केहीँ पाउने छैन ।
The sluggard will not plough by reason of the cold; Therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
5 मानवीय हृदयमा भएको उद्धेश्य गहिरो पानीजस्तै हो, तर समझशक्ति भएको मानिसले यसलाई बाहिर निकाल्ने छ ।
A design in the heart of a man is like deep waters; But a man of understanding draweth it out.
6 धैरेले आफू भक्त भएको घोषणा गर्छन्, तर कसले विश्वासयोग्य जन पाउन सक्छ?
Many will proclaim their own kindness; But a faithful man who can find?
7 धर्मात्मा आफ्नो सत्यनिष्ठामा चल्छ, र त्यसलाई पछ्याउने त्यसका छोराहरू आशिषित् हुने छन् ।
He who walketh in his integrity is a righteous man; Happy will be his children after him!
8 न्यायको काम गर्दै सिंहासनमा बस्ने राजाले आफ्नो सामु भएका सबै खराबी आफ्नै आँखाले केलाउँछन् ।
The king, sitting upon the throne of judgment, Scattereth with his eyes all the wicked like chaff.
9 कसले भन्न सक्छ, “मैले मेरो हृदय शुद्ध राखेको छु । म मेरो पापबाट सफा छु?”
Who can say, “I have kept my heart clean; I am free from my sin?”
10 नमिल्ने नापहरू असमान ढकहरू दुवैलाई परमप्रभु घृणा गर्नुहुन्छ ।
Divers weights and divers measures, —Both of them are an abomination to the LORD.
11 एउटा बालकलाई पनि त्यसका गतिविधिहरूबाट त्यसको आचरण शुद्ध र सोझो छ कि छैन भनेर चिनिन्छ ।
Even in childhood one maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his actions will be pure and right.
12 सुन्ने कान र देख्ने आँखा दुवैलाई परमप्रभुले बनाउनुभयो ।
The ear that heareth, and the eye that seeth, —The LORD made them both.
13 निद्रालाई प्रेम नगर्, नत्रता तँ दरिद्र हुने छस् । तेरा आँखा खोल्, र तँसित खानलाई प्रशस्त हुने छ ।
Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; Open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 “यो खराब छ, यो खराब छ,” ग्राहकले भन्छ, तर पर पुगेपछि त्यसले घमण्ड गर्छ ।
“Bad! bad!” saith the buyer; But when he hath gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 सुन छ, र प्रशस्त महङ्गा मणिहरू छन्, तर ज्ञानको ओठ बहुमूल्य रत्न हो ।
There is gold and abundance of pearls; But the lips of knowledge are a precious vase.
16 परदेशीको जमानी बस्नेको खास्टो पनि खोस्नू, र त्यसले अनैतिक स्त्रीको लागि यसो गरेको भए त्यो धरौटी राख्नू ।
Take his garment who is surety for another; Yea, take a pledge of him who is bound for a stranger.
17 छलद्वारा प्राप्त रोटीको स्वाद मिठो होला, तर पछि त्यसको मुखभरि रोडा हालेसरह हुन्छ ।
The bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth is filled with gravel.
18 सरसल्लाहद्वारा योजनाहरू स्थापित हुन्छन्, र बुद्धिमान् मार्ग-दर्शनद्वारा मात्र तैँले लडाइँ लड् ।
Purposes are established by counsel; Therefore with good advice make war.
19 कुरौटेले गुप्त कुराहरू बाहिर ल्याउँछ । त्यसैले धेरै कुरा गर्ने मानिसहरूसित सङ्गत नगर् ।
He who goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore associate not with him who keepeth open his lips.
20 कसैले आफ्नो बुबा वा आफ्नी आमालाई सराप्यो भने निस्पट्ट अन्धकारमा त्यसो बत्ती निभाइने छ ।
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in midnight darkness.
21 सुरुमा झट्टै प्राप्त गरेको पैतृक-सम्पत्तिले अन्त्यमा थोरै भलाइ गर्ने छ ।
A possession may be gotten hastily in the beginning, But in the end it will not be blessed.
22 यसो नभन्, “म यस खराबीको बदला लिने छु ।” परमप्रभुको प्रतीक्षा गर्, र उहाँले तँलाई छुटकारा दिनुहुने छ ।
Say not thou, “I will repay evil;” Wait on the LORD, and he will help thee.
23 परमप्रभुले असमान ढकहरूलाई घृणा गर्नुहुन्छ, र बेइमान तराजुहरू ठिक होइनन् ।
Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD, And a false balance is not good.
24 मानिसका कदमहरू परमप्रभुद्वारा निर्देशित हुन्छन् भने तब त्यसले कसरी आफ्नो मार्ग बुझ्न सक्ला त?
A man's steps are from the LORD; How, then, can a man understand his way?
25 “यो कुरो पवित्र छ,” भनी हतारमा भन्ने र भाकल गरिसकेपछि मात्र त्यसको बारेमा सोच्नु मानिसको लागि पासो हुन्छ ।
It is a snare to a man to utter a vow rashly, And after vows to consider.
26 बुद्धिमान् राजाले दुष्टहरूलाई पन्साउँछन्, र तिनले अन्न चुट्ने चक्काले तिनीहरूलाई प्रहार गर्छन् ।
A wise king scattereth the wicked like chaff, And bringeth over them the wheel.
27 मानिसको आत्मा परमप्रभुको बत्ती हो जसले त्यसका भित्री भागहरूको खोजी गर्छ ।
The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, Which searcheth all the inner chambers of his body.
28 करारको विश्वसनीयता र भरोसाले राजालाई जोगाउँछ । प्रेमद्वारा नै तिनको सिंहासन सुरक्षित हुन्छ ।
Mercy and truth preserve the king; Yea, his throne is upholden by mercy.
29 युवाहरूको महिमा तिनीहरूको शक्ति हो, र पाकाहरूको शोभा तिनीहरूको फुलेको कपाल हो ।
The glory of young men is their strength, And the beauty of old men is the gray head.
30 चोट लगाउने मुक्काले खराबीलाई साफ गर्छ, र पिटाइले भित्री भागहरूलाई शुद्ध पार्छ ।
Wounding stripes are the remedy for a bad man; Yea, stripes which reach to the inner chambers of the body.
