< हितोपदेश 18 >

1 आफैलाई अलग गर्ने मानिसले आफ्नै इच्छाको खोजी गर्छ, र त्यसले सबै पक्‍का न्यायको विरोध गर्छ ।
An unfriendly man pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.
2 मूर्खलाई समझशक्तिमा कुनै रमाहट हुँदैन, तर त्यसको हृदयमा भएको कुरो प्रकट गर्न पाए त्यो प्रसन्‍न हुन्छ ।
A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion.
3 दुष्‍ट मानिस आउँदा त्योसितै हेला, लाज र निन्दा पनि आउँछन् ।
When wickedness comes, contempt also comes, and with shame comes disgrace.
4 मानिसको मुखका वचनहरू गहिरो पानी हुन् । बुद्धिको फुहारा बगिरहने खोला हो ।
The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters. The fountain of wisdom is like a flowing brook.
5 दुष्‍ट मानिसको पक्ष लिनु राम्रो होइन, न त धर्मी मानिसको न्यायलाई इन्कार गर्नु राम्रो हो ।
To be partial to the faces of the wicked is not good, nor to deprive the innocent of justice.
6 मूर्खको ओठले आफैमाथि कलह ल्याउँछ, र त्यसको मुखले पिटाइ निम्त्याउँछ ।
A fool's lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings.
7 मूर्खको मुख त्यसको विनाश हो, र त्यसले आफ्नै ओठले आफैलाई पासोमा पार्छ ।
A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.
8 कुरौटेका वचनहरू स्वादिष्‍ट गाँसझैँ हुन्छन्, र ती शरीरका भित्री भागसम्म पुग्छन् ।
The words of a gossip are like tasty morsels, and they go down into a person's innermost parts.
9 आफ्नो काम गराइमा मन्द हुने व्यक्ति सर्वनाश गर्नेको भाइजस्तै हो ।
One who is slack in his work is brother to him who is a master of destruction.
10 परमप्रभुको नाम एउटा बलियो धरहरा हो । धर्मात्मा त्यहाँ दौडेर जान्छ र सुरक्षित हुन्छ ।
The name of Jehovah is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.
11 धनीको सम्पत्ति त्यसको किल्लाबन्दी गरिएको सहर हो, र त्यसको कल्पनामा यो अग्लो पर्खालझैँ हुन्छ ।
The rich man's wealth is his strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.
12 आफ्नो पतनअगि मानिसको हृदयमा घमण्ड आउँछ, तर आदरअगि विनम्रता आउँछ ।
Before destruction the heart of man is proud, but before honor is humility.
13 सुन्‍नअगि जवाफ दिनेको लागि त्यो त्यसको मूर्खता र लाज हो ।
He who gives answer before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.
14 मानिसको आत्मा बिरामी अवस्थामा बाँच्ने छ, तर टुटेको आत्माको पीडालाई कसले सहन सक्छ र?
A man's spirit will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed spirit, who can bear?
15 विवेकीको हृदयले ज्ञान प्राप्‍त गर्छ, र बुद्धिमान्‌को कानले यसको खोजी गरेर भेट्टाउँछ ।
The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
16 मानिसको उपहारले बाटो खोली उसलाई महत्त्वपूर्ण मानिसको सामु ल्याउन सक्छ ।
A man's gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.
17 प्रतिद्वन्दी अगाडि बढेर प्रश्‍नहरू नतेर्साएसम्म आफ्नो मुद्दाको पक्षमा वकालत गर्ने पहिलो व्यक्ति नै ठिक देखिन्छ ।
He who pleads his cause first seems right; until another comes and questions him.
18 चिट्ठा हाल्नाले वादविवादलाई मिलाउँछ, र बलिया प्रतिद्वन्द्वीहरूलाई अलग गराउँछ ।
The lot settles disputes, and keeps strong ones apart.
19 बलियो सहरमाथि जित हासिल गर्नुभन्दा बरु चोट लागेको भाइलाई जित्‍न कठिन हुन्छ, र झगडा गर्नुचाहिँ किल्लाका बारहरूझैँ हो ।
A brother offended is more difficult than a fortified city; and disputes are like the bars of a fortress.
20 आफ्नो मुखको फलले त्यसको पेट भरिएको हुन्छ । त्यसको ओठको फसलले त्यो सन्तुष्‍ट हुन्छ ।
A man's stomach is filled with the fruit of his mouth. With the harvest of his lips he is satisfied.
21 मृत्यु र जीवन जिब्रोद्वारा नियन्त्रित हुन्छ, र जिब्रोलाई प्रेम गर्नेहरूले यसको फल खाने छन् ।
Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.
22 पत्‍नी पाउनेले असल कुरा पाउँछ, र परमप्रभुबाट निगाह प्राप्‍त गर्छ ।
Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Jehovah.
23 गरिब मानिसले कृपाको लागि बिन्ती गर्छ, तर धनी मानिसले हतारमा जवाफ दिन्छ ।
The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.
24 धेरै साथीहरू भएको दाबी गर्ने मानिस तिनीहरूद्वारा नै विनाशमा लगिन्छ, तर कुनै मित्रचाहिँ भाइभन्दा पनि नजिक रहन्छ ।
A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
