हितोपदेश 17
1 कलहले भरिएको घरमा भोज खानुभन्दा शान्तिसाथ रोटीको सुक्खा टुक्रा खानु उत्तम हो ।
Better a dry morsel in quietness than a house full of feasting with strife.
2 बुद्धिमान् नोकरले लाजमर्दो गरी काम गर्ने छोरोमाथि शासन जमाउँछ, र दाजुभाइ सरह नै पैतृक-सम्पत्ति पाउने छ ।
A wise servant will rule over a disgraceful son and share his inheritance as one of the brothers.
3 चाँदी पगाल्न भाँडो र सुन खार्न आरन हुन्छ, तर परमप्रभुले नै हृदय जाँच गर्नुहुन्छ ।
A crucible for silver and a furnace for gold, but the LORD is the tester of hearts.
4 खराब काम गर्नेले दुष्टको ओठमा ध्यान दिन्छ । झुट बोल्नेले विनाशक जिब्रोमा कान लगाउँछ ।
A wicked man listens to evil lips; a liar gives ear to a destructive tongue.
5 गरिबलाई गिल्ला गर्नेले आफ्नो सृष्टिकर्ताको अपमान गर्छ, र अर्काको विपत्तिमा रमाउनेचाहिँ दण्डविना उम्कने छैन ।
He who mocks the poor insults their Maker; whoever gloats over calamity will not go unpunished.
6 नाति-नातिनाहरू पाकाहरूका मुकुट हुन्, र बुबाआमाले तिनीहरूमा आदर ल्याउँछन् ।
Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of a son is his father.
7 सिपालु बोलीवचन मूर्खलाई सुहाउँदैन । शासकको लागि झुट बोल्ने ओठ झन कति असुहाउँदो हुन्छ!
Eloquent words are unfit for a fool; how much worse are lying lips to a ruler!
8 घुस दिनेको लागि यो टुनाजस्तै हो । त्यो जहाँ गए तापनि सफल हुन्छ ।
A bribe is a charm to its giver; wherever he turns, he succeeds.
9 चित्त दुखाइलाई बेवास्ता गर्नेले प्रेमको खोजी गर्छ, तर विषयलाई दोहोर्याउनेले घनिष्ठ मित्रहरूमा फाटो ल्याउँछ ।
Whoever conceals an offense promotes love, but he who brings it up separates friends.
10 मूर्खलाई सय कोर्रा प्रहार गर्नुभन्दा बरु समझशक्ति भएको व्यक्तिलाई एउटा हप्की काफी हुन्छ ।
A rebuke cuts into a man of discernment deeper than a hundred lashes cut into a fool.
11 दुष्ट व्यक्तिले केवल विद्रोहको खोजी गर्दछ । त्यसैले त्यसको विरुद्धमा क्रुर दूत पठाइन्छ ।
An evil man seeks only rebellion; a cruel messenger will be sent against him.
12 मूर्खलाई त्यसको मूर्खतामा भेट्नुभन्दा बरु बच्चा खोसिएको भालुसित भेट गर्नु उत्तम हुन्छ ।
It is better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly.
13 जसले भलाइको साटो खराबी गर्छ, खराबीले त्यसको घर कहिल्यै छोड्ने छैन ।
If anyone returns evil for good, evil will never leave his house.
14 द्वन्द्वको सुरुआत सर्वत्र पानी फैलनुजस्तै हो । त्यसैले विवाद चर्किनुअगि नै त्यहाँबाट हिँडिहाल ।
To start a quarrel is to release a flood; so abandon the dispute before it breaks out.
15 दुष्ट मानिसलाई निर्दोष ठहराउने व्यक्ति र धर्मी मानिसलाई दण्ड दिने व्यक्ति दुवै नै परमप्रभुको लागि घृणित छन् ।
Acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous— both are detestable to the LORD.
16 बुद्धिको विषयमा सिक्न मूर्खले किन पैसा तिर्ने जब कि त्योसित यसलाई सिक्ने कुनै क्षमता नै छैन?
Why should the fool have money in his hand with no intention of buying wisdom?
17 मित्रले हर समय प्रेम गरिरहन्छ, र दाजुभाइचाहिँ कष्टको समयको लागि जन्मेका हुन्छन् ।
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 बेसमझको मानिसले वाचा बाँध्च, र आफ्नो छिमेकीको ऋणप्रति जिम्मेवार बन्छ ।
A man lacking judgment strikes hands in pledge and puts up security for his neighbor.
19 द्वन्द्वलाई प्रेम गर्नेले पापलाई प्रेम गर्छ । आफ्नो ढोकाको सङ्घार अति अग्लो बनाउनेले हड्डी भँचाउने छ ।
He who loves transgression loves strife; he who builds his gate high invites destruction.
20 कुटिल हृदय भएको मानिसले कुनै असल कुरो पाउँदैन । छली जिब्रो भएको मानिस विपत्तिमा पर्छ ।
The one with a perverse heart finds no good, and he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble.
21 जो मूर्खको बुबाआमा, तिनीहरूले आफैमा शोक ल्याउँछन्, र मूर्खको बुबामा कुनै आनन्द हुँदैन ।
A man fathers a fool to his own grief; the father of a fool has no joy.
22 आनन्दित हृदय असल औषधी हो, तर टुटेको हृदयले हड्डीहरूलाई सुकाउँछ ।
A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.
23 न्यायको मार्गलाई बङ्ग्याउन दुष्ट मानिसले गुप्त घुसलाई स्वीकार गर्छ ।
A wicked man takes a covert bribe to subvert the course of justice.
24 समझशक्ति भएको व्यक्तिले बुद्धितिर आफ्नो मन लगाउँछ, तर मूर्खको आँखा पृथ्वीको कुनाकुनामा पुग्छ ।
Wisdom is the focus of the discerning, but the eyes of a fool wander to the ends of the earth.
25 मूर्ख छोरो आफ्नो बुबाको लागि शोक हो, र त्यसलाई जन्माउने आमाको लागि तिक्तता हो ।
A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to her who bore him.
26 धर्मात्मालाई दण्ड दिनु कहिल्यै असल हुँदैन, न त निष्ठा भएका कुलीन मानिसहरूलाई कोर्रा लगाउनु असल हुन्छ ।
It is surely not good to punish the innocent or to flog a noble for his honesty.
27 ज्ञान भएको व्यक्तिले थोरै वचन बोल्दछ, र समझशक्ति भएको व्यक्तिचाहिँ ठन्डा मिजासको हुन्छ ।
A man of knowledge restrains his words, and a man of understanding maintains a calm spirit.
28 चुप लागेमा मूर्खलाई पनि बुद्धिमान् ठानिन्छ । त्यसले आफ्नो मुख बन्द गर्दा त्यसलाई विवेकी मानिन्छ ।
Even a fool is considered wise if he keeps silent, and discerning when he holds his tongue.
