1 Uba kwakungesiNkosi eyayilathi, katsho-ke uIsrayeli;

2 uba kwakungesiNkosi eyayilathi, lapho abantu besivukela,

if it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us;

3 ngabe basiginya siphila, ekuvutheni kolaka lwabo kithi;

then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

4 ngabe amanzi agijima phezu kwethu, lempophoma yedlula phezu komphefumulo wethu;

then the waters would have overwhelmed us, the stream would have gone over our soul;

5 ngabe amanzi aqubukayo edlula phezu komphefumulo wethu.

then the proud waters would have gone over our soul.

6 Kayibongwe iNkosi, engasinikelanga ukuthi sibe yimpango emazinyweni abo.

Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7 Umphefumulo wethu uphunyukile njengenyoni emjibileni wabathiyi; umjibila uqamukile, thina sasesiphunyuka.

Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

8 Usizo lwethu lusebizweni leNkosi eyenza amazulu lomhlaba.

Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
