1 Kwathi ebona amaxuku wenyukela entabeni. Esehlezi phansi, abafundi bakhe beza kuye;
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain. And when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
2 wasevula umlomo wakhe, wabafundisa, wathi:
Then he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
3 Babusisiwe abayanga emoyeni; ngoba umbuso wamazulu ungowabo.
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Babusisiwe abalilayo; ngoba bona bazaduduzwa.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 Babusisiwe abamnene; ngoba bona bazakudla ilifa lomhlaba.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6 Babusisiwe abalambela labomela ukulunga; ngoba bona bazasuthiswa.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7 Babusisiwe abalesihawu; ngoba bona bazahawukelwa.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
8 Babusisiwe abamhlophe enhliziyweni; ngoba bona bazabona uNkulunkulu.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 Babusisiwe abalamulayo; ngoba bona bazathiwa ngabantwana bakaNkulunkulu.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10 Babusisiwe abazingelwayo ngenxa yokulunga; ngoba umbuso wamazulu ungowabo.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Lina libusisiwe, nxa belithuka belizingela, bekhuluma okubi konke bemelana lani beqamba amanga, ngenxa yami;
Blessed are you when others reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.
12 thokozani lithabe kakhulu, ngoba umvuzo wenu mkhulu emazulwini; ngoba ngokunjalo babazingela abaprofethi abalandulelayo.
Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13 Lina lilitshwayi lomhlaba; kodwa uba itshwayi seliduma lizatshwaywa ngani? Kalisasizi lutho, ngaphandle kokulahlwa phandle beselinyathelwa ngabantu.
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt loses its flavor, with what shall it be seasoned? It is no longer fit for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.
14 Lina liyikukhanya komhlaba; umuzi omiswe phezu kwentaba ungesitheke;
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden,
15 njalo kabalumathisi isibane basibeke ngaphansi kwesitsha, kodwa phezu kwesiqobane sesibane, besesibakhanyisela bonke abasendlini.
nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it shines for all who are in the house.
16 Ngokunjalo kakukhanye ukukhanya kwenu phambi kwabantu, ukuze babone imisebenzi yenu emihle, badumise uYihlo osemazulwini.
Let your light shine before others in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
17 Lingacabangi ukuthi ngize ukuchitha umlayo kumbe abaprofethi; angizanga ukuchitha kodwa ukugcwalisa.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.
18 Ngoba ngiqinisile ngithi kini: Kuze kudlule izulu lomhlaba, kakusoze kudlule ibadlana libe linye kumbe ichatshana libe linye emlayweni kuze kwenzeke konke.
For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter or stroke of a letter will by any means pass from the law until all is accomplished.
19 Ngakho owephula owodwa kulimilayo emincinyane, afundise abantu ngokunjalo, uzathiwa ngomncinyane embusweni wamazulu; kodwa oyenzayo ayifundise, lowo uzathiwa mkhulu embusweni wamazulu.
Therefore whoever does away with one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 Ngoba ngithi kini: Ngaphandle kokuthi ukulunga kwenu kwedlule okwababhali lokwabaFarisi, kalisoze lingene embusweni wamazulu.
For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 Lizwile ukuthi kwathiwa kwabasendulo: Ungabulali; laloba ngubani obulalayo, uzakuba lecala lokugwetshwa;
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘Yoʋ shall not murder,’ and, ‘Whoever murders will be subject to judgment.’
22 kodwa mina ngithi kini: Wonke othukuthelela umfowabo kungelasizatho uzakuba lecala lokugwetshwa; lotshoyo kumfowabo ukuthi: Siphukuphukundini! uzakuba lecala emphakathini; lotshoyo ukuthi: Sithuthandini! uzakuba lecala lokusiwa esihogweni somlilo. (Geenna g1067)
But I say to you that everyone who is rashly angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Whoever says to his brother, ‘Yoʋ idiot,’ will be subject to the Sanhedrin. And whoever says, ‘Yoʋ fool,’ will be subject to the fires of hell. (Geenna g1067)
23 Ngakho uba uletha umnikelo wakho elathini, ubusukhumbula ulapho ukuthi umfowenu ulolutho olumelana lawe,
So if yoʋ are offering yoʋr gift at the altar and there remember that yoʋr brother has something against yoʋ,
24 tshiya lapho umnikelo wakho phambi kwelathi, uhambe, uqale ubuyisane lomfowenu, ubusuzonikela umnikelo wakho.
leave yoʋr gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to yoʋr brother, and then come and offer yoʋr gift.
25 Phangisa uzwane laye omangalelane lawe usesendleleni laye, hlezi omangalelane lawe akunikele kumahluleli, futhi umahluleli akunikele epholiseni, ubusuphoselwa entolongweni.
Make friends with yoʋr adversary quickly while yoʋ are on the way with him, lest yoʋr adversary hand yoʋ over to the judge, and the judge hand yoʋ over to the guard, and yoʋ be thrown into prison.
26 Ngiqinisile ngithi kuwe: Kawusoze uphume khona, uze ubhadale indibilitshi yokucina.
Truly I say to yoʋ, yoʋ will certainly not come out of there until yoʋ have paid the last penny.
27 Lizwile ukuthi kwathiwa kwabasendulo: Ungafebi.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Yoʋ shall not commit adultery.’
28 Kodwa mina ngithi kini: Wonke okhangela owesifazana ukumkhanuka usefebile laye enhliziyweni yakhe.
But I say to you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 Njalo uba ilihlo lakho lokunene likukhubekisa, likhuphe ulilahlele khatshana lawe; ngoba kungcono kuwe ukuthi kubhubhe sibe sinye sezitho zakho, lokuthi umzimba wakho wonke ungaphoselwa esihogweni. (Geenna g1067)
So if yoʋr right eye causes yoʋ to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from yoʋ. For it is better for yoʋ to have one of yoʋr members perish, than for yoʋr whole body to be thrown into hell. (Geenna g1067)
30 Njalo uba isandla sakho sokunene sikukhubekisa, siqume usilahlele khatshana lawe; ngoba kungcono kuwe ukuthi kubhubhe sibe sinye sezitho zakho, lokuthi umzimba wakho wonke ungaphoselwa esihogweni. (Geenna g1067)
And if yoʋr right hand causes yoʋ to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from yoʋ. For it is better for yoʋ to have one of yoʋr members perish, than for yoʋr whole body to be thrown into hell. (Geenna g1067)
31 Kwathiwa-ke: Loba ngubani owala umkakhe, kumele amnike incwadi yesehlukaniso;
“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’
32 kodwa mina ngithi kini: Loba ngubani owala umkakhe, ngaphandle kodaba lokufeba, umenza afebe, njalo loba ngubani omthathayo owaliweyo uyafeba.
But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, apart from a matter of fornication, makes her commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
33 Lizwile futhi ukuthi kwathiwa kwabasendulo: Ungafungi amanga, kodwa gcwalisa izifungo zakho eNkosini.
“Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘Yoʋ shall not break an oath, but shall keep yoʋr oaths to the Lord.’
34 Kodwa mina ngithi kini: Lingafungi lakanye; loba ngezulu, ngoba liyisihlalo sobukhosi sikaNkulunkulu;
But I say to you, do not swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
35 loba ngomhlaba, ngoba uyisenabelo senyawo zakhe; loba ngeJerusalema, ngoba ingumuzi weNkosi enkulu;
nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 njalo ungafungi ngekhanda lakho, ngoba ungelwenze unwele lalunye lube mhlophe kumbe lube mnyama.
Neither shall yoʋ swear by yoʋr head, for yoʋ cannot make one hair white or black.
37 Kodwa ilizwi lenu kalibe ngelokuthi: Yebo, yebo; hatshi, hatshi. Okudlula lokhu-ke kuvela komubi.
But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No’; for whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
38 Lizwile ukuthi kwathiwa: Ilihlo ngelihlo, lezinyo ngezinyo;
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’
39 kodwa mina ngithi kini: Lingamelani lobubi; kodwa loba ngubani okuwakala esihlathini sokunene, mphendulele lesinye;
But I say to you, do not resist one who is evil. Rather, if anyone slaps yoʋ on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 lalowo ofuna ukukumangalela lokuthatha isigqoko sakho, mtshiyele lesembatho;
If anyone wants to sue yoʋ and take away yoʋr tunic, let him have yoʋr cloak also.
41 laloba ngubani okubamba ngamandla ukuthi uhambe imayili libe linye, hamba laye abe mabili.
And if anyone presses yoʋ into service for one mile, go with him two.
42 Mnike ocela kuwe; njalo ungamfulatheli ofisa ukweboleka kuwe.
Give to everyone who asks of yoʋ, and do not turn away from anyone who wants to borrow from yoʋ.
43 Lizwile ukuthi kwathiwa: Wothanda umakhelwane wakho, njalo uzonde isitha sakho;
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Yoʋ shall love yoʋr neighbor and hate yoʋr enemy.’
44 kodwa mina ngithi kini: Thandani izitha zenu, libabusise abaliqalekisayo, libaphathe kuhle abalizondayo, libakhulekele abaliphatha kubi, labalizingelayo;
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,
45 ukuze libe ngabantwana bakaYihlo osemazulwini, ngoba yena uphumisa ilanga lakhe phezu kwababi labahle, anise izulu phezu kwabalungileyo labangalunganga.
so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46 Ngoba aluba lithanda labo abalithandayo, lilomvuzo bani? Kabenzi njalo labathelisi yini?
For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 Futhi uba libingelela abafowenu bodwa, lenzani okukhulu okwedlula okwabanye? Kabenzi njalo labathelisi yini?
And if you greet only your friends, what are you doing that is out of the ordinary? Do not even the tax collectors do that?
48 Ngakho lina banini ngabapheleleyo, njengoba uYihlo osemazulwini ephelele.
You therefore shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
