1 Kodwa ngezikhathi langemizuzu, bazalwane, kalisweli ukuthi libhalelwe,
But of the times and the seasons, my brethren, you need not that I write to you;
2 ngoba lina uqobo liyazi kuhle kakhulu ukuthi usuku lweNkosi luzafika ngokunjalo njengesela ebusuku;
for you truly know that the day of our Lord as a thief in the night so cometh.
3 ngoba nxa besithi: Ukuthula lokuhlala kuhle, khona ukubhujiswa okujumayo kuzabehlela, njengomhelo kowesifazana okhulelweyo, njalo kabasoze baphunyuke.
While they shall be saying, Peace and tranquillity, then unawares will destruction arise against them, as distress upon the child-bearer, and they shall not escape.
4 Kodwa lina, bazalwane, kalikho emnyameni, ukuze lolosuku luliphuthume njengesela;
But you, my brethren, are not in darkness, that that day as a thief should overtake you.
5 lina lonke lingabantwana bokukhanya labantwana bemini; kasisibo abobusuku loba abobumnyama;
For all of you are sons of light, and sons of the day; and are not sons of the night, nor sons of darkness.
6 ngakho-ke asingalali njengabanye labo, kodwa asilinde siqonde.
Sleep we not, therefore, as the rest; but be wakeful and sober.
7 Ngoba abalalayo balala ebusuku; labadakwayo badakwa ebusuku.
For they who sleep, in the night sleep; and they who are drunken, in the night are drunken.
8 Kodwa thina esingabemini, asiqonde, sifake isivikelo sesifuba sokholo lothando, lethemba losindiso libe likhowa,
But we who are sons of the day must be wakeful in our minds, and wear the mail-coat of faith and of love, and put on the helmet of the hope of salvation.
9 ngoba uNkulunkulu kasimiselanga ulaka, kodwa ukuzuza usindiso ngeNkosi yethu uJesu Kristu,
For Aloha hath not appointed us to wrath, but to the possession of salvation in our Lord Jeshu Meshiha,
10 owasifelayo, ukuze loba siphapheme loba silele, siphile kanye laye.
who died on our behalf, that, whether we wake or sleep, together with him we may live.
11 Ngakho khuthazanani, lakhane, njengoba lani likwenza.
Wherefore comfort one another, and edify one another, as also you do.
12 Kodwa siyalincenga, bazalwane, ukuthi libazi labo abasebenza nzima phakathi kwenu, labaliphathayo eNkosini, labalelulekayo,
BUT I entreat of you, my brethren, to know them who labour among you, and stand before your faces teaching you,
13 njalo libahlonipha kakhulu okwedlula amalawulo ethandweni ngenxa yomsebenzi wabo. Hlalisanani ngokuthula.
that they be esteemed by you in abundant love; and on account of their work be at peace with them.
14 Kodwa siyalikhuthaza, bazalwane, yelulekani abangelamthetho, liduduze abadanileyo, lisekele ababuthakathaka, libekezelele bonke.
And I entreat of you, my brethren, (to) admonish the offenders, and encourage the little of soul, and bear the burden of the weak, and prolong your spirit toward every man.
15 Qaphelani ukuthi kungabi khona ophindisela omunye okubi ngokubi; kodwa dingisisani ngesikhathi sonke okuhle lomunye komunye lakibo bonke.
And beware, lest any of you evil render for evil; but always follow after (those things which are) good (pl.) toward one another, and toward every man.
16 Thokozani njalonjalo;
Be joyful always,
17 khulekani lingaphezi;
and pray without ceasing,
18 bongani kukho konke; ngoba lokhu kuyintando kaNkulunkulu kuKristu Jesu ngani.
and in every thing give thanks; for this is the will of Aloha in Jeshu Meshiha concerning you.
19 Lingamcitshi uMoya;
The Spirit quench not.
20 lingadeleli iziprofetho;
Prophecy do not despise.
21 hlolisisani konke; libambelele kokuhle;
Prove every thing, and what is good retain.
22 dedani kukho konke ukubonakala kobubi.
And from every evil thing flee.
23 Kungathi uNkulunkulu wokuthula uqobo angalenza libe ngcwele ngokupheleleyo; njalo kungathi umoya wenu wonke lomphefumulo lomzimba kungalondolozwa kungasoleki ekufikeni kweNkosi yethu uJesu Kristu.
But the God of peace himself will sanctify perfectly all of you; and your whole spirit, and your soul, and your body will he keep without fault, to the coming of our Lord Jeshu Meshiha.
24 Uthembekile yena olibizayo; laye ozakwenza lokhu.
Faithful is he who hath called you, who himself will do it!
25 Bazalwane, sikhulekeleni.
My brethren, pray for us.
26 Bingelelani abazalwane bonke ngokwanga okungcwele.
Ask the peace of all our brethren, with the holy kiss.
27 Ngiyalifungisa ngeNkosi, ukuthi lincwadi ifundwe kubo bonke abazalwane abangcwele.
I adjure you, by our Lord, that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.
28 Umusa weNkosi yethu uJesu Kristu kawube lani. Ameni.
The grace of our Lord Jeshu Meshiha be with you. Amen.
