And the Lord said to Moses in the waste land of Sinai, in the Tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they came out of the land of Egypt,
2 “Balani abantu bonke bako-Israyeli ngensendo langezindlu zabo, lenze uluhlu lwamabizo amadoda, inye ngayinye.
Take the full number of the children of Israel, by their families, and by their fathers' houses, every male by name;
3 Wena lo-Aroni lizaqoqa ngezigaba wonke amadoda ako-Israyeli kusukela kwabaleminyaka engamatshumi amabili kusiya phezulu abangaba libutho.
All those of twenty years old and over, who are able to go to war in Israel, are to be numbered by you and Aaron.
4 Kuzozonke izizwe lithathe indoda eyodwa, eyinhloko yendlu yakibo, ukuze balincedise.
And to give you help, take one man from every tribe, the head of his father's house.
5 La yiwo amabizo amadoda azaliphathisa: esizweni sikaRubheni, u-Elizuri indodana kaShedewuri:
These are the names of those who are to be your helpers: from Reuben, Elizur, the son of Shedeur;
6 esizweni sikaSimiyoni, uShelumiyeli indodana kaZurishadayi;
From Simeon, Shelumiel, the son of Zurishaddai;
7 esizweni sikaJuda, uNahashoni indodana ka-Aminadabi;
From Judah, Nahshon, the son of Amminadab;
8 esizweni sika-Isakhari, uNethaneli indodana kaZuwari;
From Issachar, Nethanel, the son of Zuar;
9 esizweni sikaZebhuluni, u-Eliyabi indodana kaHeloni;
From Zebulun, Eliab, the son of Helon;
10 emadodaneni kaJosefa kwakuyila: esizweni sika-Efrayimi, u-Elishama indodana ka-Amihudi; esizweni sikaManase, uGamaliyeli indodana kaPhedazuri;
Of the children of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama, the son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel, the son of Pedahzur,

From Benjamin, Abidan, the son of Gideoni;
12 esizweni sikaDani, u-Ahiyezeri indodana ka-Amishadayi;
From Dan, Ahiezer, the son of Ammi-shaddai;
13 esizweni sika-Asheri, uPhagiyeli indodana ka-Okhirani;
From Asher, Pagiel, the son of Ochran;
14 esizweni sikaGadi, u-Eliyasafi indodana kaDuweli;
From Gad, Eliasaph, the son of Reuel;
15 esizweni sikaNafithali; u-Ahira indodana ka-Enani.”
From Naphtali, Ahira, the son of Enan.
16 La yiwo amadoda akhethwa ebantwini bakuleyondawo, bengabakhokheli bezizwe zabokhokho babo. Babezinhloko zezizwana zako-Israyeli.
These are the men named out of all the people, chiefs of their fathers' houses, heads of the tribes of Israel.
17 UMosi lo-Aroni bathatha amadoda la alamabizo ayeqanjiwe
And Moses and Aaron took these men, marked out by name;

These are they who were numbered by Moses and Aaron and by the twelve chiefs of Israel, one from every tribe.

So all those who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their families, all those of twenty years old and over who were able to go to war,

Were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.
47 Abendlu yesizwe sikaLevi, bona-ke, ababalwanga kanyekanye labanye.
But the Levites, of the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them.
48 UThixo wayethe kuMosi:
For the Lord said to Moses,
49 “Ungabali abesizwe sikaLevi njalo ungabahlanganisi kulokhu kubalwa kwabanye laba abako-Israyeli.
Only the tribe of Levi is not to be numbered among the children of Israel,
50 Kodwa, beka abaLevi ukuthi baphathe ithabanikeli lobufakazi, impahla zalo zonke kanye lazozonke izinto ezisetshenziswa kulo. Yibo abazathwala ithabanikeli lempahla zalo; bazalinakekela njalo bazalihonqolozela.
But to them you are to give the care of the Tent of meeting with its vessels and everything in it: they are to take up the Tent, and be responsible for everything to do with it, and put up their tents round it.
51 Ngezikhathi zonke nxa ithabanikeli lisuswa abaLevi yibo abazalethula, kuthi-ke nxa selimiswa njalo, abaLevi yibo abazalimisa. Loba ngubani osondela phansi kwalo uzabulawa.
And when the Tent of meeting goes forward, the Levites are to take it down; and when it is to be put up, they are to do it: any strange person who comes near it is to be put to death.
52 Abako-Israyeli bazakwakha amathente abo ngezigaba zabo, indoda ngayinye esihonqweni sayo ngaphansi kophawu lwayo.
The children of Israel are to put up their tents, every man in his tent-circle round his flag.
53 Kodwa abaLevi bazamisa amathente abo ehonqolozele ithabanikeli loBufakazi ukuze isizwe sabako-Israyeli singayikwehlelwa lulaka. AbaLevi bazasebenza ukulinda iThabanikeli loBufakazi.”
But the tents of the Levites are to be round the Tent of meeting, so that wrath may not come on the children of Israel: the Tent of meeting is to be in the care of the Levites.
54 Abako-Israyeli benza konke njengokulaywa kukaMosi nguThixo.
So the children of Israel did as the Lord had given orders to Moses.
