1 UJesu wasekhokhelwa nguMoya wamusa enkangala ukuthi ayelingwa nguSathane.
Then was Jesus led by the Holy Spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the Calumniator
2 Emva kokuzila ukudla okwensuku ezingamatshumi amane lobusuku obungamatshumi amane wayeselambile.
And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he hungered.
3 Umlingi weza kuye wathi, “Nxa uyiNdodana kaNkulunkulu tshela amatshe la aphenduke abe yisinkwa.”
And the Tempter came, and said to him: If thou art the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.
4 UJesu waphendula wathi, “Kulotshiwe ukuthi: ‘Umuntu kayikuphila ngesinkwa kuphela kodwa ngelizwi lonke eliphuma emlonyeni kaNkulunkulu.’”
But he replied, and said: It is written, that not by bread only, doth man live; but by every word proceeding from the mouth of God.
5 USathane wasemthatha wamusa emzini ongcwele, wamisa engqongweni yethempeli.
Then the Calumniator took him to the holy city, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 Wathi kuye, “Nxa uyiNdodana kaNkulunkulu, ziphosele phansi. Njengoba kulotshiwe ukuthi: ‘Uzalaya izingilosi zakhe ngawe, zikuqage ngezandla zazo, ukuze ungatshayeki ngonyawo lwakho elitsheni.’”
and said to him: If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, that he will give his angels charge of thee, and in their hands will they sustain thee, lest thou strike thy foot against a stone.
7 UJesu wamphendula wathi, “Kulotshiwe ukuthi, ‘Ungayilingi iNkosi uNkulunkulu wakho.’”
Jesus said to him: It is moreover written, that thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8 Waphinda njalo uSathane wamusa entabeni ephakemeyo kakhulu, wamtshengisa yonke imibuso yomhlaba lokucwebezela kwayo.
Again the Calumniator took him to a mountain that was very high, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory;
9 Wathi, “Ngizakunika konke lokhu nxa ungangikhothamela, ungikhonze.”
and said to him: All these will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 UJesu wathi kuye, “Suka kimi Sathane! Ngoba kulotshiwe ukuthi: ‘Khonza iNkosi uNkulunkulu wakho njalo usebenzele yena yedwa.’”
Then Jesus said to him: Begone, Satan; for it is written, that thou shalt worship the Lord, thy God; and him only shalt thou serve.
11 USathane wasemtshiya, izingilosi zabuya zazomkhonza.
Then the Calumniator left him: and lo, angels came, and ministered to him.
12 UJesu wathi esizwa ukuthi uJohane wayesevalelwe entolongweni, wabuyela eGalile.
And when Jesus had heard that John was delivered up, he retired to Galilee.
13 Wasuka eNazaretha wayahlala eKhaphenawume eyayisokhunjini lomfula emangweni wakoZebhuluni lakoNafithali,
And he left Nazareth, and came and dwelt in Capernaum, by the side of the sea, on the confines of Zebulon and Naphthali.
14 ukugcwalisa lokho okwatshiwo ngomphrofethi u-Isaya ukuthi:
That so might be fulfilled that which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, who said:
15 “Lizwe likaZebhuluni lelizwe likaNafithali, iNdlela eya oLwandle, phetsheya kweJodani, iGalile yabeZizweni,
The land of Zebulon, the land of Naphthali, the way of the sea, the ford of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 abantu ababehlezi emnyameni sebebone ukukhanya okukhulu; kulabo abahlezi elizweni lethunzi lokufa, ukukhanya sekufikile.”
the people that sat in darkness, have seen great light; and to them who sat in the region and shadow of death, light is arisen.
17 Kusukela ngalesosikhathi uJesu waqalisa ukutshumayela esithi, “Phendukani ngoba umbuso wezulu ususondele.”
From that time began Jesus to proclaim and say: Repent; for the kingdom of heaven hath approached.
18 Kwathi uJesu ehamba okhunjini loLwandle lwaseGalile wabona izelamani ezimbili, uSimoni owayethiwa nguPhethro lomfowabo u-Andreya. Babephosela umambule olwandle ngoba bengabagoli benhlanzi.
And as he walked on the shore of the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Cephas, and Andrew his brother, who were casting nets into the sea; for they were fishermen.
19 UJesu wathi, “Wozani lingilandele, ngizalenza abagoli babantu.”
And Jesus said to them: Follow me; and I will cause you to become fishers of men.
20 Masinyane nje batshiya omambule babo bamlandela.
And immediately, they left their nets, and went after him.
21 Esuka lapho wabona ezinye izelamani ezimbili, uJakhobe indodana kaZebhediya lomfowabo uJohane. Babephakathi kwesikepe loyise uZebhediya, belungisa omambule babo. UJesu wababiza,
And as he passed on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, who were mending their nets. And Jesus called them.
22 baphanga batshiya isikepe kanye loyise bamlandela.
And they immediately left the ship and their father, and went after him.
23 UJesu wahamba kulolonke iGalile efundisa emasinagogweni abo, etshumayela izindaba ezinhle zombuso, esilisa zonke izifo lemikhuhlane ebantwini.
And Jesus traveled over all Galilee. and he taught in their synagogues and proclaimed the tidings of the kingdom; and he cured every disease and malady among the people.
24 Udumo lwakhe lwagcwala kulolonke elase-Asiriya, abantu baletha kuye bonke ababegula belezifo ezehlukeneyo, labo ababesebuhlungwini obukhulu, ababephethwe ngamadimoni, ababelezithuthwane lababeyizilima, bonke wabasilisa.
And his fame spread through all Syria. And they brought to him all them that were very sick with diverse diseases, and them that were afflicted with pains, and demoniacs, and lunatics and paralytics; and he healed them.
25 Amaxuku amakhulu ayevela eGalile, eDekhapholisi, eJerusalema, eJudiya lasemangweni ongaphetsheya kweJodani amlandela.
And there followed him great multitudes from Galilee, and from the Ten Cities, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond the Jordan.
