1 Ngalezonsuku uKhesari Agastasi wakhupha isimemezelo sokuthi abantu babalwe kulolonke ilizwe lombuso wamaRoma.
And it came to pass in those days, that there went forth a decree from Cæsar Augustus, that all the inhabitants of the land should be enrolled.
2 (Lokhu kwakuyikubalwa kwabantu kokuqala okwenzakala uKhwirinu engumbusi wase-Asiriya.)
This enrollment first took place when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.
3 Wonke umuntu waya edolobheni lakibo wayabhalisa.
And all went to be enrolled, each one to his own city.
4 UJosefa laye wahamba esuka edolobheni leNazaretha eseGalile waya eJudiya, eBhethilehema idolobho likaDavida, ngoba wayengowendlu losendo lukaDavida.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (for he was of the house and family of David, ).
5 Waya khona ukuyabhalisa eloMariya, owayesethembise ukwendela kuye, esekhulelwe.
to be enrolled with Mary his betrothed wife, who was with child.
6 Bathi bekhonale safika isikhathi sokubelethwa komntwana,
And it came to pass while they were there, that the days for her to be delivered were completed;
7 wazibula ngendodana. Wayigoqela ngamalembu, wayilalisa emkolweni wokudlela izifuyo ngoba babengelandawo endlini yezihambi.
and she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swathing-clothes, and laid him in the stable, because there was no place for them in the inn.
8 Kwakulabelusi ababehlala emlageni eduze kwalapho, belinda imihlambi yabo yezimvu ebusuku.
And there were in the same country shepherds, living in the open field, and guarding their flock by night.
9 Ingilosi yeNkosi yabonakala kubo, inkazimulo yeNkosi yakhanya ibazingelezile, ngakho besaba kakhulu.
And, behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were greatly afraid.
10 Kodwa ingilosi yathi kubo, “Lingesabi. Ngizolitshela izindaba ezinhle ezizaletha intokozo enkulu ebantwini bonke.
And the angel said to them: Be not afraid; for, behold, I bring you good news of great joy, which shall be for all people.
11 Lamuhla lizalelwe uMsindisi emzini kaDavida; unguKhristu iNkosi.
For there is born for you this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
12 Lokhu kuzakuba yisibonakaliso kini: Lizathola umntwana egoqelwe ngamalembu elele emkolweni.”
And this shall be to you the sign: you will find the babe wrapped in swathing-clothes, and lying in a stable.
13 Masinyane kwaqhamuka ixuku lebandla lasezulwini lengilosi lidumisa uNkulunkulu lisithi,
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying:
14 “Udumo kuNkulunkulu emazulwini aphezulu, lokuthula emhlabeni kulabo abathole umusa kuye.”
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will among men.
15 Kwathi izingilosi sezibatshiyile zabuyela ezulwini, abelusi bakhulumisana bathi, “Kasihambeni siye eBhethilehema siyobona into le esiyenzakele, iNkosi esisitshele ngayo.”
And it came to pass, that, after the angels had gone away into heaven, the shepherds said one to another: Let us now go to Bethlehem, and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.
16 Bahle basuka ngokuphangisa, bafica uMariya loJosefa losane olwalulele emkolweni wokudlela izifuyo.
And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the stable.
17 Bathi sebembonile umntwana, batshela abanengi ngalokho ababekutshelwe mayelana lomntwana lo,
And after they had seen it, they made known everywhere the words that had been spoken to them of this child.
18 kwathi bonke abalizwayo bamangaliswa yilokho abakuzwa ngabelusi.
And all that heard, wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 Kodwa uMariya wazenza igugu zonke lezizinto wazishicilela enhliziyweni yakhe.
But Mary kept all these things in her mind, and pondered them in her heart.
20 Abelusi babuyela, bedumisa njalo bebabaza uNkulunkulu ngezinto zonke ababezizwile njalo bazibona, zaba yikho kanye ababekutsheliwe.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all things which they had heard and seen, as it had been told to them.
21 Ngosuku lwesificaminwembili, sekuyisikhathi sokuthi asokwe, wethiwa ibizo elithi nguJesu, ibizo ayelithiwe yingilosi engakabunjwa esiswini.
And when eight days were completed for circumcising him, his name was called Jesus, as it had been called by the angel, before he was conceived in the womb.
22 Kwathi lapho sesiphelile isikhathi sabo sokuhlanjululwa ngokomthetho kaMosi, uJosefa loMariya bamusa eJerusalema ukuyamnikela eNkosini
And when the days for their purification were completed according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord,
23 (njengokulotshiweyo eMthethweni weNkosi ukuthi, “Lonke izibulo lesilisa kumele linikelwe eNkosini”),
(as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord; )
24 njalo kwenziwe umhlatshelo kulandelwa lokho okutshiwo nguMthetho weNkosi othi: “amajuba amabili loba inkwilimba ezisesezincane ezimbili.”
and to offer a sacrifice, according to that which is commanded in the law of the Lord: A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
25 Kwakukhona eJerusalema indoda eyayithiwa nguSimiyoni, yayilungile njalo ikholwa. Yayilindele ukududuzwa kuka-Israyeli, njalo uMoya oNgcwele wawuphezu kwayo.
And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon. And this man was just and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was upon him:
26 Kwakwambuliwe kuye nguMoya oNgcwele ukuthi wayengayikufa engakaboni uKhristu weNkosi.
and it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Anointed.
27 Waholwa nguMoya wangena emagumeni ethempeli. Kwathi abazali sebemlethile umntwana uJesu ukumenzela lokho okwakufunwa ngumkhuba woMthetho,
And he came by the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,
28 uSimiyoni wamgona ngezingalo zakhe wadumisa uNkulunkulu esithi:
he took him in his arms, and blessed God, and said:
29 “Thixo, Nkosi, njengoba wavele wathembisa, manje-ke iyekele ihambe ngokuthula inceku yakho.
Now, Lord, thou dost let thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word,
30 Ngoba amehlo ami aseyibonile insindiso yakho,
for my eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 oyilungisileyo phambi kwezizwe zonke,
which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
32 ukukhanya kokwambulela abeZizwe lokwenkazimulo yabantu bakho bako-Israyeli.”
a light for a revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
33 Oyise lonina womntwana bamangala kakhulu ngalokho okwakukhulunywa ngaye.
And Joseph and his mother wondered at the things which were spoken of him.
34 USimiyoni wasebabusisa, wathi kuMariya unina: “Umntwana lo umiselwe ukuwa lokuvuka kwabanengi ko-Israyeli, lokuba yisibonakaliso esizagconwa,
And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother: Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign to be spoken against,
35 ukwenzela ukuthi imicabango yabanengi ivele obala. Njalo inkemba izawugwaza umphefumulo wakho lawe.”
(and a sword shall pierce through your own soul, ) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
36 Kwakukhona njalo umphrofethikazi, u-Ana, indodakazi kaFanuweli, owesizwana sika-Asheri. Wayesemdala kakhulu: wayephile lomkakhe okweminyaka eyisikhombisa ngemva kokwenda kwakhe,
And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was of great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity:
37 wasesiba ngumfelokazi waze waba leminyaka engamatshumi ayisificaminwembili lane. Kazange lanini asuke ethempelini kodwa wayekhonza ubusuku lemini, ezila njalo ekhuleka.
and she was a widow of about eighty-four years, and she departed not from the temple, but served, day and night, with fastings and prayers.
38 Wabuya kubo ngalesosikhathi wabonga kuNkulunkulu, wakhuluma ngomntwana kubo bonke ababelindele ukuhlengwa kweJerusalema.
And she came in at that hour, and gave thanks to Lord, and spoke of him to all that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
39 Kwathi lapho uJosefa loMariya sebekwenzile konke okwakufuneka ngoMthetho weNkosi babuyela eGalile, edolobheni lakibo elaseNazaretha.
And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
40 Umntwana wakhula, waqina; wagcwala inhlakanipho, njalo umusa kaNkulunkulu waba phezu kwakhe.
And the child grew, and became strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Iminyaka yonke abazali bakhe baya eJerusalema belanda uMkhosi wePhasika.
And his parents went up every year to Jerusalem, at the feast of passover.
42 Kwathi eseleminyaka elitshumi lambili baya emkhosini njengenjayelo.
And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast.
43 Kwathi uMkhosi usuphelile, abazali bakhe sebebuyela ekhaya, umfana uJesu wasala eJerusalema, kodwa bona belibele.
And when they had kept the full number of days, and had set out to return, the child Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew it not.
44 Bazihambela ilanga lonke bona becabanga ukuthi ukhona edwendweni lwabo. Basebeqalisa ukumdinga phakathi kwezihlobo zabo labangane.
But supposing that he was in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they sought for him among their relatives and acquaintance;
45 Bathi sebemswele babuyela eJerusalema bayamdinga.
and not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem in search of him.
46 Ngemva kwensuku ezintathu bamfumana emagumeni ethempeli ehlezi phakathi kwabafundisi elalele njalo ebabuza imibuzo.
And it came to pass, after three days, that they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 Wonke umuntu owamuzwayo wamangala ngokuzwisisa kwakhe kanye lempendulo zakhe.
And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding, and his answers.
48 Abazali bakhe bathi bembona bamangala kakhulu. Unina wathi kuye, “Ndodana, kungani usinqinekisa kangaka? Uyihlo lami besesikhathazekile sikudinga.”
And when they saw him they were amazed. And his mother said to him: Child, why have you acted thus toward us? Behold, your father and I have sought for you in sorrow.
49 Yena wabuza wathi, “Belivele lingidingelani kanti? Belingazi yini ukuthi bekumele ngibe sendlini kaBaba?”
And he said to them: Why did you seek for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?
50 Kodwa kabazwisisanga lokho ayekutsho kubo.
And they did not understand the words which he spoke to them.
51 Wasehamba labo eNazaretha wahlala ebalalela. Kodwa unina wazenza igugu zonke lezi izinto enhliziyweni yakhe.
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. And his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 UJesu wakhula ngenhlakanipho, langomzimba langokuthandwa nguNkulunkulu labantu.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and with man.
