1 UNkulunkulu wasesithi kuJakhobe, “Yana eBhetheli wakhe khona, njalo khonapho wakhele uNkulunkulu i-alithari, yena owabonakala kuwe lapho ubalekela umnewenu u-Esawu.”
God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”
2 Ngakho uJakhobe wasesithi kwabomuzi wakhe lakubo bonke ababelaye, “Lahlani onkulunkulu bezizweni elilabo, lizihlambulule, lintshintshe lezigqoko zenu.
Then Jacob said to his household, and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are amongst you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.
3 Beselisiza sihambe siye eBhetheli lapho engizakwakha khona i-alithari likaNkulunkulu yena owangisizayo ngosuku lokuhlupheka kwami njalo olokhu elami loba ngingaze ngiye ngaphi.”
Let’s arise, and go up to Bethel. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went.”
4 Basebemupha uJakhobe bonke onkulunkulu bezizweni ababelabo lamacici ayesendlebeni zabo, uJakhobe wakumbela ngaphansi kwesihlahla somʼOkhi eShekhemu.
They gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hands, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 Emva kwalokho basebesuka, ukumesaba uNkulunkulu kwehlela imizi yonke ababakhelane layo, akwaze kwaba loyedwa owaxotshana labo.
They travelled, and a terror of God was on the cities that were around them, and they didn’t pursue the sons of Jacob.
6 UJakhobe wafika eLuzi (leyo yiBhetheli) kanye labo bonke ayelabo elizweni laseKhenani.
So Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.
7 Wakha khona i-alithari, indawo waseyibiza ngokuthi yi-Eli Bhetheli, ngoba kwakulapho uNkulunkulu aziveza khona ngesikhathi ebalekela umfowabo.
He built an altar there, and called the place El Beth El; because there God was revealed to him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 UDibhora, umlizane kaRabheka wafa, wembelwa ngaphansi komʼOkhi ngezansi kweBhetheli. Yikho yathiwa yi-Aloni Bhakhuthi.
Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; and its name was called Allon Bacuth.
9 UJakhobe esebuyile ePhadani Aramu uNkulunkulu wabonakala kuye njalo, wambusisa.
God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan Aram, and blessed him.
10 UNkulunkulu wathi kuye, “Ibizo lakho linguJakhobe, kodwa kawusayi kuthiwa unguJakhobe; ibizo lakho selizathiwa ungu-Israyeli.” Ngakho wamutha wathi ngu-Israyeli.
God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel.” He named him Israel.
11 UNkulunkulu wathi kuye, “NginguNkulunkulu uSomandla; zalanani lande ngobunengi. Kuzaphuma kuwe isizwe lezinhlanga zezizwe, lamakhosi azavela emzimbeni wakho.
God said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body.
12 Ilizwe engalinika u-Abhrahama lo-Isaka ngilinika wena lawe, njalo ilizwe leli ngizalinika izizukulwane zakho eziza emva kwakho.”
The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, and to your offspring after you I will give the land.”
13 UNkulunkulu wasephakama emtshiya endaweni lapho ayeke wakhuluma laye khona.
God went up from him in the place where he spoke with him.
14 UJakhobe wamisa insika yelitshe endaweni leyo uNkulunkulu ayekhulume laye khona, wasethululela phezu kwayo umnikelo onathwayo; wathela njalo amafutha phezu kwayo.
Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he spoke with him, a pillar of stone. He poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it.
15 UJakhobe wasebiza indawo leyo lapho uNkulunkulu akhuluma laye khona ngokuthi yiBhetheli.
Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him “Bethel”.
16 Basebehamba besuka eBhetheli. Kwathi belokhu besesebucwala kwe-Efrathi, uRasheli wahelelwa kwaba nzima ukubeletha.
They travelled from Bethel. There was still some distance to come to Ephrath, and Rachel travailed. She had hard labour.
17 Kwathi ekulobobunzima bokubeletha umbelethisi wathi kuye, “Ungesabi. Ngoba uzazuza enye indodana.”
When she was in hard labour, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for now you will have another son.”
18 Kwathi esephela ngoba wayesesifa wetha indodana yakhe wathi nguBheni-Oni. Kodwa uyise wayo wayithi nguBhenjamini.
As her soul was departing (for she died), she named him Benoni, but his father named him Benjamin.
19 Wafa kanjalo uRasheli wembelwa endleleni kuyiwa e-Efrathi (kutshiwo iBhethilehema.)
Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath (also called Bethlehem).
20 UJakhobe wakha insika phezu kwethuna, kuze kube lamhla insika leyo itshengisa ithuna likaRasheli.
Jacob set up a pillar on her grave. The same is the Pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.
21 U-Israyeli wabuye wathutha wayamisa ithente lakhe ngale kweMigidali-Eda.
Israel travelled, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
22 U-Israyeli esakhile kulowomango, uRubheni wasuka wayalala lomfazi weceleni kayise uBhiliha, njalo u-Israyeli wakuzwa. UJakhobe wayelamadodana alitshumi lambili:
While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.
23 Amadodana kaLeya ayeyila: uRubheni izibulo likaJakhobe, uSimiyoni, uLevi, uJuda, u-Isakhari loZebhuluni.
The sons of Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
24 Amadodana kaRasheli ayeyila: uJosefa loBhenjamini.
The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
25 Amadodana encekukazi kaRasheli, uBhiliha ayeyila: uDani loNafithali.
The sons of Bilhah (Rachel’s servant): Dan and Naphtali.
26 Amadodana encekukazi kaLeya uZilipha ayeyila: uGadi lo-Asheri. La ayengamadodana kaJakhobe awazalela ePhadani Aramu.
The sons of Zilpah (Leah’s servant): Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.
27 UJakhobe weza ekhaya kuyise u-Isaka eMamure, eduze leKhiriyathi Aribha (kutsho iHebhroni) lapho u-Abhrahama lo-Isaka ababehlala khona.
Jacob came to Isaac his father, to Mamre, to Kiriath Arba (which is Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac lived as foreigners.
28 U-Isaka waphila okweminyaka elikhulu lamatshumi ayisificaminwembili.
The days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
29 Wafika ekucineni wafa, wembelwa labantu bakibo eseluphele leminyaka yakhe isiminengi. Amadodana akhe u-Esawu loJakhobe bamngcwaba.
Isaac gave up the spirit and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. Esau and Jacob, his sons, buried him.
