1 UDina, indodakazi kaLeya ayizalela uJakhobe wasuka wayakwethekelela abafazi balelolizwe.
And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had born unto Jacob, went out to look about among the daughters of the land.
2 Kwathi uShekhemu, indodana kaHamori umHivi, umbusi walowomango, ebona uDina, wamthatha wamdlova.
And Shechem the son of Chamor the Hivite, the prince of the country, saw her; and he took her, and lay with her, and did her violence.
3 Inhliziyo yakhe yathatheka ngoDina indodakazi kaJakhobe, wayithanda intombi le, wakhuluma layo kamnandi.
And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden, and spoke kindly unto the maiden.
4 UShekhemu wathi kuyise uHamori, “Ngithathela intombi le ibe ngumkami.”
And Shechem spoke unto Chamor his father, saying, Get me this girl for wife.
5 UJakhobe wathi ekuzwa ukuthi indodakazi yakhe uDina yayingcolisiwe, amadodana akhe ayesegangeni lezifuyo; wathula nje aze abuya ekhaya.
And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
6 Ngakho usekaShekhemu, uHamori wayakhuluma loJakhobe.
And Chamor the father of Shechem went out unto to Jacob to speak with him.
7 Ngalesosikhathi amadodana kaJakhobe ayesebuyile evela egangeni evele esezwile okwasekwenzakele. Babelosizi njalo begcwele ulaka ngoba uShekhemu wayenze into elihlazo ko-Israyeli ngokudlova indodakazi kaJakhobe, into okwakungamelanga yenziwe.
And the sons of Jacob came from the field when they heard it, and the men were grieved, and it excited their anger greatly; because he had wrought a disgraceful thing in Israel to lie with the daughter of Jacob, and this ought not to be done.
8 Kodwa uHamori wathi kubo, “Indodana yami uShekhemu uyayithanda indodakazi yakho. Muphe yona ibe ngumkakhe.
And Chamor spoke with them, saying, The soul of Shechem my son longeth for your daughter; give her, I pray you, unto him for wife.
9 Kasendiselane; sipheni amadodakazi enu, lani lizithathele amadodakazi ethu.
And intermarry with us; your daughters ye shall give unto us, and our daughters ye may take unto yourselves.
10 Lingazihlalela phakathi kwethu; ilizwe livulekile kini. Hlalani kulo, thengisani kulo njalo lifuye kulo.”
And with us shall ye dwell; and the land shall be open before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and acquire possessions therein.
11 UShekhemu wasesithi kuyise kaDina lakubanewabo, “Ngicela ukuthi lingamukele, ngizalinika loba yini eliyifunayo.
And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brother, Let me but find grace in your eyes, and whatever ye may say unto me, I will give.
12 Khulumani amalobolo lokangaziwe, mina ngizakuletha ngobunengi bakho njengokufuna kwenu, njalo ngizakukhupha konke elikubizayo. Lina ngiphani intombi kuphela nje ibe ngumkami.”
Ask of me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give, just as ye may say unto me; but give me the maiden for wife.
13 Kwathi ngoba udadewabo uDina wayesengcolisiwe, amadodana kaJakhobe aphendula ngobuqili ekhuluma loShekhemu loyise uHamori.
And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Chamor his father with cunning, and spoke; because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
14 Athi kubo, “Asingeke senze into enjalo; ngeke siphe udadewethu indoda engasokwanga. Lokho kungaba lihlazo kithi.
And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that would be a reproach unto us.
15 Sizavuma kuphela nxa lenze lokhu: ukuthi libe njengathi ngokusoka bonke abesilisa benu.
But on this condition will we consent unto you; if ye will become as we are, that every male of you be circumcised:
16 Lapho-ke sesingalendisela amadodakazi ethu lathi sithathe amadodakazi enu. Sizakwakha phakathi kwenu sibe ngabantu banye lani.
Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters unto us; and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17 Kodwa nxa lingavumi ukusokwa sizamthatha udadewethu sihambe.”
But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter, and go our way.
18 Icebo labo lakhanya lilihle kuHamori loShekhemu.
And their words were pleasing in the eyes of Chamor, and in the eyes of Shechem, the son of Chamor.
19 Ijaha leli eliyilo elalihlonitshwa kakhulu emzini kayise, kalisachithanga isikhathi ukukwenza lokho ababekutshilo ngoba lalitshiseka ngendodakazi kaJakhobe.
And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter; and he was the most honored of all the house of his father.
20 Ngakho uHamori lendodana yakhe uShekhemu baya entubeni yedolobho bayabonisana lamadoda edolobho lakibo.
And Chamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying,
21 Bathi, “Amadoda la alomusa kithi. Kabahlale elizweni lethu bathengiselane labantu; ilizwe leli lilendawo enkulu abangahlala kuyo. Singathatha amadodakazi abo labo bangathatha awethu.
These men are peaceably inclined with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; and the land, behold, it is large enough on all sides before them; their daughters we will take unto us for wives, and our daughters we will give unto them.
22 Kodwa bangavuma ukuhlala phakathi kwethu kuphela nxa abesilisa bethu bengasokwa njengabo.
Only with this condition will the men consent unto us to dwell with us, to become one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23 Kambe izifuyo zabo, lempahla yabo kanye layo yonke imfuyo yabo kakukuba ngokwethu na? Ngakho kasivumeni, khona bezakwakha phakathi kwethu.”
Their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs will they not be ours? only let us consent unto them, that they may dwell with us.
24 Wonke amadoda ayekhona entubeni yedolobho avumelana loHamori lendodana yakhe uShekhemu, kwathi bonke abesilisa balelodolobho basokwa.
And unto Chamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and all the males were circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
25 Ngemva kwensuku ezintathu, bonke belokhu besebuhlungwini, amadodana kaJakhobe amabili, uSimiyoni loLevi, abanewabo bakaDina, bathatha inkemba zabo balihlasela idolobho belibele, babulala bonke abesilisa.
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took each his sword, and came upon the city unresisted and slew all the males.
26 OHamori lendodana yakhe uShekhemu babaquma ngenkemba bamkhupha uDina endlini kaShekhemu bahamba.
And they slew Chamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword; and they took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.
27 Amadodana kaJakhobe afikela phezu kwezidumbu aliphanga idolobho lapho udadewabo ayengcoliselwe khona.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28 Athumba imihlambi yabo yezimvu lenkomo, labobabhemi lakho konke okwakungokwabo phakathi edolobheni langaphandle egangeni.
They took their sheep and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field.
29 Bayiqukula yonke inotho yabo kanye labafazi labantwana, bathumba konke okwakusezindlini kwaba yimpango.
And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives they took captive, and spoiled; and all that was in the house.
30 UJakhobe wasesithi kuSimiyoni loLevi, “Selingehlisele uhlupho langenza ngasoleka kakhulu kumaKhenani lamaPherizi, abantu abahlala elizweni leli. Thina sibalutshwana, bangahlangana bangihlasele, mina lomuzi wami sizabhujiswa.”
And Jacob said unto Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, to cause me to be hated among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and as I am but few in number, they may gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I would be destroyed, I and my house.
31 Kodwa bona baphendula bathi, “Bekufanele yini ukuthi aphathe udadewethu njengesifebe na?”
And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?
