1 EKhesariya kwakulendoda eyayithiwa nguKhoneliyasi, yayingumlawuli webutho lekhulu elalithiwa liViyo lase-Ithaliya.
Now there was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort.
2 Yena lendlu yakhe yonke babekhonza njalo bemesaba uNkulunkulu. Wayenika ngesihle labo abaswelayo njalo ekhuleka kuNkulunkulu kokuphela.
He was a devout man who feared God along with his entire household; he gave generously to those in need and always prayed to God.
3 Ngelinye ilanga, sokungaba lihola lesithathu emini waba lombono. Wabona kamhlophe ingilosi kaNkulunkulu, eyeza kuye yathi, “Khoneliyasi!”
About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God, who came in and said to him, “Cornelius!”
4 UKhoneliyasi wayiqhuzulela amehlo ngokwesaba. Wabuza wathi, “Kuyini, Nkosi?” Ingilosi yaphendula yathi, “Imikhuleko yakho lezipho zakho kwabaswelayo sekufinyelele kuNkulunkulu kwaba yisikhumbuzo.
Staring at him intently, Cornelius was afraid and said, “What is it, Lord?” The angel said to him, “Yoʋr prayers and charitable acts have ascended as a memorial offering before God.
5 Ngakho-ke, thumela amadoda eJopha ayebuya lendoda ethiwa nguSimoni owaziwa ngokuthi nguPhethro.
Now send men to Joppa and have them bring back Simon, who is called Peter.
6 Ihlala loSimoni ongumtshuki wezikhumba, olendlu okhunjini lolwandle.”
He is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the sea.”
7 Ingilosi eyakhuluma laye isihambile, uKhoneliyasi wabiza izinceku zakhe ezimbili kanye loyedwa owayengumncedisi webutho owayeyindoda ekhonzayo.
When the angel who spoke to him went away, Cornelius called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among his attendants.
8 Wabatshela konke okwakwenzakele, wasebathuma eJopha.
After explaining everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
9 Sekungaba phakathi laphakathi kwemini sebebanga edolobheni, uPhethro wakhwela ophahleni ukuyakhuleka.
On the next day, as the men were traveling along and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray at about the sixth hour.
10 Wezwa eselambile esefuna ulutho lokudla, kwathi ukudla kusalungiswa wehlelwa yisiyeziphupho.
He became hungry and wanted to eat, and as they were preparing a meal, a trance fell upon him.
11 Wabona izulu livulekile, kusehliselwa emhlabeni ulutho olwalunjengelembu elikhulu libanjwe ngamagumbi alo womane.
He saw heaven opened and an object like a large sheet coming down to him. It was tied at its four corners and was being lowered to the earth.
12 Lalithwele yonke imihlobo yezinyamazana ezilenyawo ezine, kanye lezinanakazana ezihuquzelayo emhlabeni lezinyoni zemoyeni.
In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, as well as wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the sky.
13 Ilizwi laselimtshela lathi, “Vuka Phethro. Hlaba udle.”
Then a voice came to him: “Rise, Peter, kill and eat.”
14 UPhethro waphendula wathi, “Hatshi, Nkosi! Kangikaze ngidle lutho olungahlanzekanga lolungcolileyo.”
But Peter said, “Surely not, Lord! For I have never eaten anything that is defiled or unclean.”
15 Laphinda ilizwi lakhuluma okwesibili kuye lathi, “Ungabokuthi ulutho oseluhlanjululwe nguNkulunkulu kaluhlanzekanga.”
The voice came to him again a second time: “Do not regard as defiled what God has made clean.”
16 Lokhu kwenzakala kathathu, kwasekusithi masinyane ilembu labuyiselwa ezulwini.
This happened three times, and then the object was taken up again into heaven.
17 Kwathi uPhethro esamangele ngokuthi umbono lowo wawusitshoni, amadoda ayethunywe nguKhoneliyasi ayibona indlu kaSimoni, ema entubeni.
While Peter was greatly perplexed, pondering within himself what the vision he had seen might mean, behold, the men sent by Cornelius had asked for Simon's house and were standing at the gate.
18 Akhuleka abuza ingabe uSimoni owayethiwa nguPhethro wayehlala khonapho yini.
They called out and asked if Simon, who was called Peter, was staying there.
19 Kwathi uPhethro elokhu esacabanga ngombono, uMoya wathi kuye, “Simoni, kulamadoda amathathu akudingayo.
As Peter continued pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Behold, some men are looking for yoʋ.
20 Ngakho-ke, phakama wehlele phansi. Ungathandabuzi ukuhamba lawo, ngoba ngiwathumile.”
Now get up, go downstairs, and go with them without any misgivings, for I have sent them.”
21 UPhethro wehla wathi emadodeni lawo, “Nginguye lowo elimdingayo. Lilandeni?”
So Peter went down to the men and said, “Behold, I am the one you are looking for. For what reason have you come?”
22 Amadoda aphendula athi, “Sivela kuKhoneliyasi umlawuli wekhulu lamabutho. Ungumuntu olungileyo owesaba uNkulunkulu, ohlonitshwa yibo bonke abangamaJuda. Ingilosi engcwele imtshele ukuthi kakulethe endlini yakhe ukuze ezwe lokho ongabe uyakutsho.”
They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man, who is well spoken of by the entire Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for yoʋ to come to his house and to hear a message from yoʋ.”
23 UPhethro wasewangenisa endlini amadoda lawo njengezethekeli zakhe. Ngosuku olulandelayo uPhethro wasuka labo, kwathi labanye abazalwane beJopha bahamba laye.
So Peter invited them in and put them up for the night. The next day Peter went with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.
24 Ngelanga elilandelayo wafika eKhesariya. UKhoneliyasi wayesebalindele esebize izihlobo zakhe labangane abaseduze.
The following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.
25 Kuthe uPhethro engena, uKhoneliyasi wamhlangabeza, wazilahla phansi ezinyaweni zakhe ngenhlonipho.
When Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him.
26 Kodwa uPhethro wamsukumisa. Wathi, “Sukuma, mina ngingumuntu nje.”
But Peter raised him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am just a man.”
27 UPhethro wangena endlini elokhu ekhuluma laye, wafumana ixuku labantu elikhulu.
As Peter talked with him, he went in and found many people gathered together.
28 Wathi kubo, “Liyakwazi ukuthi kungaphandle komthetho wethu ukuthi umJuda ahlanganyele loweZizwe loba ukuthi amethekelele. Kodwa uNkulunkulu usengitshengisile ukuthi kangingakutsho ukuthi omunye umuntu kahlanzekanga loba ungcolile.
Peter said to them, “You know that it is forbidden for a Jewish man to keep company with or associate with a foreigner, but God has shown me that I should call no one defiled or unclean.
29 Yikho kuthe lapho ngibizwa lapha, ngahle ngeza ngingazange ngibalise lokhu lalokhuyana. Sengibuza-ke manje, ungibizelani?”
That is why I came without objection when I was sent for. I ask then, what is the reason you have sent for me?”
30 UKhoneliyasi waphendula wathi, “Ensukwini ezintathu ezedluleyo bengisendlini yami ngikhuleka ngasonalesi isikhathi, ngehola lesithathu emini. Masinyane indoda ebigqoke izigqoko ezikhazimulayo yema phambi kwami,
Cornelius said, “Four days ago I was fasting until this hour. At the ninth hour I was praying in my house, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing.
31 yathi, ‘Khoneliyasi, uNkulunkulu usewuzwile umkhuleko wakho wakhumbula lezipho zakho kwabaswelayo.
The man said, ‘Cornelius, yoʋr prayer has been heard, and yoʋr charitable acts have been remembered before God.
32 Thumela ilizwi eJopha ubize uSimoni owaziwa ngokuthi nguPhethro. Wethekelele emzini kaSimoni umtshuki wezikhumba, ohlala malungana lolwandle.’
Therefore send to Joppa and ask for Simon, who is called Peter. He is staying by the sea in the house of a tanner named Simon. When he arrives, he will speak to yoʋ.’
33 Yikho ngihle ngathuma abantu kuwe ngokuphangisa, kwaba kuhle ukuthi lawe uze. Manje sonke sesikhona lapha phambi kukaNkulunkulu ukuthi sizwe konke iNkosi ekuyale ukuthi usitshele khona.”
So I sent for yoʋ at once, and yoʋ have done well by coming. Now then, we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that yoʋ have been commanded by God.”
34 UPhethro waseqalisa ukukhuluma wathi: “Sengibona khathesi ukuthi ngeqiniso uNkulunkulu kalabandlululo,
Then Peter opened his mouth and said, “Now I truly understand that God shows no partiality,
35 kodwa wamukela abantu benhlanga zonke abamesabayo, abenza okulungileyo.
but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
36 Yilo leli ilizwi uNkulunkulu alithumela ebantwini bako-Israyeli, elikhuluma ngezindaba ezinhle zokuthula ngoJesu Khristu oyiNkosi yabo bonke.
You yourselves know the message he sent to the sons of Israel, preaching the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,
37 Liyakwazi osekwenzakele kulolonke elaseJudiya, kusukela eGalile ngemva kobhaphathizo olwatshunyayelwa nguJohane,
the message that spread throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John preached:
38 ukuthi uNkulunkulu wamgcoba kanjani uJesu waseNazaretha ngoMoya oNgcwele langamandla, lokuthi wahamba izindawana zonke esenza ubuhle njalo esilisa bonke ababesemandleni omubi, ngoba uNkulunkulu wayelaye.
how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, who then went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.
39 Singofakazi bakho konke akwenzayo elizweni lamaJuda laseJerusalema. Bambulala ngokumlengisa esiphambanweni,
We are witnesses of everything he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a cross,
40 kodwa uNkulunkulu wamvusa kwabafileyo ngosuku lwesithathu, wakwenza ukuthi abonakale.
but God raised him up on the third day and allowed him to be seen,
41 Kabonwanga ngabantu bonke, kodwa ngofakazi uNkulunkulu ayevele esebakhethile, yithi thina esadla sanatha laye ngemva kokuvuka kwakhe kwabafileyo.
not by all the people, but by us, the witnesses who had been chosen beforehand by God, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42 Wasilaya ukuba sitshumayele ebantwini bonke njalo sifakaze ukuthi unguye uNkulunkulu ambekayo ukuba ngumahluleli wabaphilayo labafileyo.
He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one who has been appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead.
43 Bonke abaphrofethi bafakaza ngaye ukuthi bonke abakholwa kuye baphiwa ukuthethelelwa kwezono ngebizo lakhe.”
All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives remission of sins through his name.”
44 UPhethro elokhu esakhuluma amazwi la uMoya oNgcwele wehlela kubo bonke abalizwayo ilizwi.
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message.
45 AmaJuda, amakholwa asokiweyo ayeze loPhethro amangaliswa yikuthi uMoya oNgcwele wawuthululelwe lakwabeZizwe.
All the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were astonished, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was being poured out even on the Gentiles.
46 Ngoba babezwa bekhuluma ngendimi bedumisa uNkulunkulu. UPhethro wasesithi,
For they heard them speaking in tongues and magnifying God. Then Peter responded,
47 “Kambe ukhona yini umuntu ongalela abantu laba ukuba babhaphathizwe ngamanzi na? Sebemukele uMoya oNgcwele njengathi.”
“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”
48 Wasesithi kababhaphathizwe ebizweni likaJesu Khristu. Basebecela uPhethro ukuthi ahlale labo okwensukwana ezithile.
So he gave orders to have them baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.
