1 १ परमेश्वर जर घर बांधीत नाही, तर तो जे बांधतो ते काम व्यर्थ आहे. जर परमेश्वर नगर रक्षित नाही, तर पहारेकरी उभे राहून रक्षण करतात ते व्यर्थ आहे.

The song of greces of Salomon. `No but the Lord bilde the hous; thei that bilden it han trauelid in veyn. No but the Lord kepith the citee; he wakith in veyn that kepith it.

2 २ तुम्ही पहाटे लवकर उठता, रात्री उशीराने घरी येता, किंवा कठोर परिश्रम करून भाकर खाता हे सर्व व्यर्थ आहे कारण परमेश्वर आपल्या प्रियजनास लागेल ते झोपेतही देतो.

It is veyn to you to rise bifore the liyt; rise ye after that ye han sete, that eten the breed of sorewe. Whanne he schal yyue sleep to his loued; lo!

3 ३ पाहा, मुले ही परमेश्वरापासून मिळालेले वतन आहे, आणि पोटचे फळ त्याच्यापासून मिळालेली देणगी आहे.

the eritage of the Lord `is sones, the mede is the fruyt of wombe.

4 ४ तरुणपणाची मुले हे वीराच्या हातातील बाणांसारखी आहेत.

As arowis ben in the hond of the miyti; so the sones of hem that ben schakun out.

5 ५ ज्या मनुष्याचा भाता अशांनी भरला आहे, तो धन्य! तो वेशीवर शत्रूंशी त्याची बोलाचाली होत असता, ते फजीत होणार नाहीत.

Blessid is the man, that hath fillid his desier of tho; he schal not be schent, whanne he schal speke to hise enemyes in the yate.
