नीतिसूत्रे 27

1 १ उद्याविषयी बढाई मारू नकोस, कारण एक दिवस काय घेऊन येईल हे तुला माहित नाही.

Boast not thyself of to-morrow, for thou knowest not what a day will bring forth.

2 २ तुझ्या स्वतःच्या मुखाने नव्हे तर दुसऱ्याने तुझी स्तुती करावी, तुझ्याच ओठांनी नव्हे तर परक्याने तुझी स्तुती करावी,

Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

3 ३ दगड खूप वजनदार असतो आणि वाळू वजनाने भारी असते, पण मुर्खाला डिवचणे या दोन्हीपेक्षा भारी असते.

A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's vexation is heavier than them both.

4 ४ क्रोधाचा क्रूरपणा आणि कोपाचा पूर पण मत्सरापुढे कोण उभा राहू शकेल?

Fury is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before jealousy?

5 ५ गुप्त प्रेमापेक्षा उघड निषेध चांगला आहे.

Open rebuke is better than hidden love.

6 ६ मित्राने केलेले घाव विश्वासू आहेत, पण शत्रू तुमची विपुलतेने चुंबणे घेतो.

Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

7 ७ जो कोणी पूर्ण तृप्त आहे त्यास मधाच्या पोळाचा कंटाळा येतो, भुकेल्याला प्रत्येक कडू गोष्ट गोड आहे.

The full soul trampleth on a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

8 ८ जसा पक्षी आपल्या घरट्यापासून भटकतो, तसा मनुष्य जेथे कोठे राहतो तेथून चुकून भलतीकडे जातो.

As a bird that wandereth from her nest, so is a man that wandereth from his place.

9 ९ सुगंधी द्रव्य आणि सुवास हृदय आनंदीत करतात. पण मित्राचा गोडपण त्याच्या सल्ल्यापेक्षा उत्तम आहे.

Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart; and the sweetness of one's friend is [the fruit] of hearty counsel.

10 १० स्वतःच्या आणि आपल्या वडिलांच्या मित्रांना सोडू नकोस; आणि आपल्या संकटाच्या दिवशी भावाच्या घरी जाऊ नको. दूरवरच्या आपल्या भावाकडे जाण्यापेक्षा जवळचा शेजारी चांगला आहे.

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; and go not into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

11 ११ माझ्या मुला, शहाणा हो आणि माझे मन आनंदीत कर, नंतर जो कोणी माझ्यावर टीका करेल त्यास मी उत्तर देईन.

Be wise, my son, and make my heart glad, that I may have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me.

12 १२ शहाणा मनुष्य संकटाला पाहतो आणि स्वतःला लपवतो, पण भोळेपुढे जातात आणि त्यांना त्याची किंमत द्यावी लागते.

A prudent [man] seeth the evil, [and] hideth himself; the simple pass on, [and] are punished.

13 १३ जो परक्याच्या कर्जासाठी पैसे ठेवून जामीन झाला आहे त्याचे वस्त्र ठेवून घे; पण जेव्हा तो व्यभिचारी स्त्रीसाठी जामीन होतो त्यास तारणादाखल ठेव.

Take his garment that is become surety [for] another, and hold him in pledge for a strange woman.

14 १४ जो कोणी पहाटेस उठून आपल्या शेजाऱ्याला मोठ्या आवाजात आशीर्वाद देतो, तो त्यास शाप असा गणला जाईल.

He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be reckoned a curse to him.

15 १५ पावसाच्या दिवसात सतत गळणारे ठिपके, भांडखोर पत्नी सारखीच आहेत.

A continual dropping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike:

16 १६ तिला ताब्यात ठेवणे म्हणजे वाऱ्याला ताब्यात ठेवण्यासारखे आहे, किंवा आपल्या हातात तेल पकडून ठेवण्याचा प्रयत्न करणे.

whosoever will restrain her restraineth the wind, and his right hand encountereth oil.

17 १७ लोखंड लोखंडाला धारदार करते; तसा मनुष्य आपल्या मित्राचा चेहरा धारदार करतो.

Iron is sharpened by iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

18 १८ जो कोणी अंजिराच्या झाडाची निगा राखतो तो त्याचे फळ खाईल. आणि तसेच जो कोणी आपल्या धन्याचे रक्षण करतो त्याचा मान होईल.

Whoso keepeth the fig-tree shall eat the fruit thereof; and he that guardeth his master shall be honoured.

19 १९ जसे पाण्यात मनुष्याच्या चेहऱ्याचे प्रतिबिंब जशाचे तसे दिसते, तसेच मनुष्याचे हृदय मनुष्याचे प्रतिबिंब दाखविते.

As [in] water face [answereth] to face, so the heart of man to man.

20 २० मृतलोक आणि विनाशस्थान ही कधीही तृप्त होत नाही. त्याचप्रमाणे मनुष्याचे डोळे कधी तृप्त होत नाही. (Sheol h7585)

Sheol and destruction are insatiable; so the eyes of man are never satisfied. (Sheol h7585)

21 २१ रुप्यासाठी मूस आणि सोन्यासाठी भट्टी आहे; आणि तसे मनुष्याची स्तुतीने पारख केली जाते.

The fining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; so let a man be to the mouth that praiseth him.

22 २२ जरी तू मूर्खाला कुटलेल्या धान्याबरोबर उखळात घालून मुसळाने कुटले, तरी त्याची मूर्खता त्याच्यापासून जाणार नाही.

If thou shouldest bray a fool in a mortar among wheat with a pestle, yet will not his folly depart from him.

23 २३ तू आपल्या शेरडामेंढरांना एकत्र जमून त्यांची स्थिती जाणून खात्री कर. आणि आपल्या कळपाकडे नीट लक्ष दे.

Be well acquainted with the appearance of thy flocks; look well to thy herds:

24 २४ संपत्ती कायम टिकत नाही. मुकुट तरी सर्व पिढ्यानपिढ्या टिकेल काय?

for wealth is not for ever; and doth the crown [endure] from generation to generation?

25 २५ गवत जाते आणि पुन्हा नवीन उगवते. आणि डोंगरावरील हिरवळ कापून गुरांढोरासाठी गोळा करण्यात येते.

The hay is removed, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered in.

26 २६ वस्त्रासाठी कोकरे आहेत, आणि बकरे शेताचे मोल आहेत.

The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of a field;

27 २७ बकरीचे दूध तुझ्या खाण्यासाठी व तुझ्या घरच्यांच्या खाण्यासाठी, आणि तुझ्या दासींच्या पोषणापुरते तुझ्याजवळ आहे.

and there is goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and sustenance for thy maidens.
