नीतिसूत्रे 18

1 १ जो कोणी आपणास वेगळा करतो तो स्वतःची इच्छा पूर्ण करायला पाहतो; आणि तो सर्व स्वस्थ सुज्ञतेविरूद्ध लढतो.

Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeks and intermeddles with all wisdom.

2 २ मूर्खाला समंजसपणात आनंद मिळत नाही, पण केवळ आपल्या मनात काय आहे हे प्रगट करण्यात त्यास आनंद आहे.

A fool has no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.

3 ३ जेव्हा वाईट मनुष्य येतो, त्याच्याबरोबर तिरस्कार येतो, निर्भत्सना आणि लाज त्यासह येतात.

When the wicked comes, then comes also contempt, and with dishonour reproach.

4 ४ मनुष्याच्या मुखाचे शब्द खोल पाण्यासारखे आहेत; ज्ञानाचा झरा वाहणाऱ्या प्रवाहासारखे आहेत.

The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.

5 ५ जे कोणी चांगले करतात त्यांचा न्याय विपरित करण्यासाठी, दुष्टाचा पक्ष धरणे चांगले नाही.

It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

6 ६ मूर्खाचे ओठ त्यास भांडणात पाडतात, आणि त्याचे मुख मारास आमंत्रण देते.

A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calls for strokes.

7 ७ मूर्खाचा नाश त्याच्या तोंडामुळे होतो, आणि त्याचे ओठ त्यास स्वतःला पाश होतात.

A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

8 ८ गप्पागोष्टी करणाऱ्याचे शब्द स्वादिष्ट पक्वान्नासारखे आहेत, आणि ते अगदी खोल पोटात शिरतात.

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

9 ९ जो कोणी आपल्या कामात निष्काळजी आहे तो नाश करणाऱ्याचा भाऊ आहे.

He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great destroyer.

10 १० परमेश्वराचे नाव बळकट बुरुजाप्रमाणे आहे; नीतिमान त्यामध्ये धावत जातो आणि सुरक्षित राहतो.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it, and is safe.

11 ११ श्रीमंताची संपत्ती त्याचे बळकट नगर आहे; आणि त्याच्या कल्पनेने तो उंच भींतीसारखा आहे.

The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.

12 १२ मनुष्याच्या नाशापूर्वी त्याचे अंतःकरण गर्विष्ठ असते, पण गौरवापूर्वी विनम्रता येते.

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

13 १३ जो कोणी ऐकण्यापूर्वी उत्तर देतो, त्याचे ते करणे मूर्खपणाचे आणि लज्जास्पद असते.

He that answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame unto him.

14 १४ आजारपणात मनुष्याचा आत्मा जिवंत राहतो, पण तुटलेला आत्मा कोणाच्याने सोसवेल?

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

15 १५ सुज्ञाचे मन ज्ञान प्राप्त करून घेते, आणि शहाणा ऐकून ते शोधून काढतो.

The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

16 १६ मनुष्याचे दान त्याच्यासाठी मार्ग उघडते, आणि महत्वाच्या मनुष्यांसमोर त्यास आणते.

A man's gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.

17 १७ जो सुरुवातीला आपली बाजू मांडतो तो बरोबर आहे असे वाटते, पण त्याचा प्रतिस्पर्धी येऊन त्यास प्रश्र विचारतो.

He that is first in his own cause seems just; but his neighbour comes and searches him.

18 १८ चिठ्ठ्या टाकल्याने भांडणे मिटतात, आणि बलवान प्रतिस्पर्धी वेगळे होतात.

The lot causes contentions to cease, and parts between the mighty.

19 १९ दुखवलेल्या भावाची समजूत घालणे हे बळकट तटबंदी असलेले शहर जिंकण्यापेक्षा कठीण आहे. आणि भांडणे राजवाड्याच्या अडसरासारखे आहेत.

A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.

20 २० मनुष्याचे पोट त्याच्या मुखाच्या फळाने भरेल, तो आपल्या ओठांच्या पीकाने तृप्त होईल.

A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.

21 २१ जीवन किंवा मरण ही जीभेच्या अधिकारात आहेत; आणि ज्या कोणाला ती प्रिय आहे तो तिचे फळ खातो.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

22 २२ ज्या कोणाला पत्नी मिळते त्यास चांगली वस्तू मिळते, आणि त्यास परमेश्वराचा अनुग्रह प्राप्त होतो.

Whoso finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favour of the LORD.

23 २३ गरीब मनुष्य दयेची विनवणी करतो, पण श्रीमंत मनुष्य कठोरपणाने उत्तर देतो.

The poor uses entreaties; but the rich answers roughly.

24 २४ जो कोणी पुष्कळ मित्र करतो तो आपल्याच नाशासाठी ते करतो, परंतु एखादा असा मित्र असतो की तो आपल्या भावापेक्षाही आपणांस धरून राहतो.

A man that has friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.
