अनुवाद 19
1 १ तुझा देव परमेश्वर ज्या राष्ट्रांची भूमी तुला देत आहे, त्या राष्ट्रांना नष्ट केल्यावर त्यांच्या प्रदेशाचा तू ताबा घेतल्यानंतर, त्यांच्या जागी त्यांची नगरे आणि घरे तुम्ही ताब्यात घ्याल,
When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou dost succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses;
thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy GOD giveth thee to possess it.
3 ३ म्हणजे कोणाच्या हातून मनुष्यवध झाल्यास त्यास तेथे पळून जाता यावे म्हणून रस्ते तयार कर, आणि जो प्रदेश तुझा देव परमेश्वर तुला देत आहे त्या देशाचे तू तीन भाग कर.
Thou shalt prepare thee the way, and divide the borders of thy land, which the LORD thy God causeth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee thither.
4 ४ मनुष्यवध करून या तीनपैकी एका नगरात आश्रयाला येणाऱ्याबद्दल नियम असा: पूर्वीचे वैर नसताना जर कोणी चुकून आपल्या शेजाऱ्याला ठार मारले तर त्याने येथे जावे.
And this is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee thither and live: whoso killeth his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in time past;
5 ५ उदाहरणार्थ, एखादा मनुष्य लाकडे तोडायला त्याच्या शेजाऱ्याबरोबर जंगलात गेला. तेथे झाडावर कुऱ्हाड चालवत असताना चूकून कुऱ्हाडीचे पाते दांड्यापासून निसटले आणि ते नक्की दुसऱ्यावर पडून तो मेला. अशावेळी कुऱ्हाड चालवणाऱ्याने यापैकी एखाद्या नगराच्या आश्रयाला जाऊन आपले प्राण वाचवावे.
as when a man goeth into the forest with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of these cities and live;
6 ६ हे नगर फार दूर असेल तर त्यास तेथपर्यंत पोचता येणार नाही. मृताचा जवळचा नातेवाईक त्याचा पाठलाग करील व त्यास त्या नगरात पोचण्यापूर्वीच गाठेल. आणि रागाच्या भरात त्याचा वध करील. खरे पाहता त्या मनुष्याच्या हातून वैर नसताना मनुष्य हत्या झाली होती तेव्हा तो प्राणदंडाला पात्र नव्हता.
lest the avenger of blood pursue the manslayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and smite him mortally; whereas he was not deserving of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.
Wherefore I command thee, saying: 'Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.'
8 ८ तुमच्या प्रदेशाचा विस्तार करण्याचे तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ह्याने तुमच्या वशंजाना शपथ दिल्याप्रमाणे, त्यांना वचन दिलेला सर्व प्रदेश तो तुम्हास देईल.
And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy border, as He hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which He promised to give unto thy fathers —
9 ९ तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ह्याजवर प्रीती करा व त्याने दाखवलेल्या मार्गात नियमीत चालत जा. मी दिलेल्या या आज्ञा तुम्ही पूर्णपणे पाळल्यात तर मग परमेश्वराने तुमच्या प्रदेशाचा विस्तार केला की तुम्ही पहिल्या तीन नगरांच्या भरीला आश्रयासाठी आणखी तीन नगरे निवडा.
if thou shalt keep all this commandment to do it, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in His ways — then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three;
10 १० म्हणजे तुमचा देव परमेश्वर तुम्हास देणार असलेल्या भूमीवर निर्दोष मनुष्यांचा रक्तपात होणार नाही आणि अशा हत्येचे दोष तुम्हास लागणार नाही.
that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
11 ११ पण द्वेषापोटीही एखादा मनुष्य संधीची वाट पाहत लपूनछपून दुसऱ्याच्या जिवावर उठेल, त्याच्यावर प्राणघातक हल्ला करून या नगरात पळून गेला.
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die; and he flee into one of these cities;
12 १२ अशावेळी त्याच्या नगरातील वडिलधाऱ्यांनी माणसे पाठवून त्यास तेथून बाहेर काढावे व मृताच्या नातेवाईकांच्या हवाली करावे. म्हणजे त्यास मृत्यूची शिक्षा झाली पाहिजे.
then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
13 १३ त्या मनुष्यावर दया दाखवू नका परंतु निरपराध मनुष्याच्या हत्येचा दोष इस्राएलातून पुसून टाक म्हणजे तुझे कल्याण होईल.
Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the blood of the innocent from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
14 १४ शेजाऱ्याच्या जमिनीची सीमा खूण काढू नको. पूर्वीच्या लोकांनी त्या सीमा आखलेल्या आहेत. हे तुमचा देव परमेश्वर ह्याने तुमच्या वाट्याला जेवढे वतन दिले त्याच्या या खूणा आहेत.
Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set, in thine inheritance which thou shalt inherit, in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.
15 १५ एखाद्याने काही गुन्हा किंवा अपराध केला तर, अपराधाचा आरोप कोणावर असेल तर त्यास दोषी ठरवायला एक साक्षीदार पुरेसा नाही. त्याने खरेच गुन्हा केला आहे हे ठरवायला दोन किंवा तीन साक्षीदार तरी हवेतच.
One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth; at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall a matter be establishment
If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to bear perverted witness against him;
17 १७ अशावेळी त्या दोघांना परमेश्वरासमोर म्हणजे तेथे जे याजक व न्यायाधीश त्यावेळी असतील त्यांच्यापुढे उभे करावे.
then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges that shall be in those days.
18 १८ मग न्यायाधीशांनी त्याबाबत कसून चौकशी केली पाहिजे. त्यातून साक्षीदाराचा आपल्या बंधुविरोधात खोटारडेपणा उघडकीला आला,
And the judges shall inquire diligently; and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
19 १९ तर मग तुम्ही त्यास तीच शिक्षा करावी जी त्यास आपल्या बंधूला जे शासन व्हावे असे वाटत होते. अशा रीतीने आपल्यामधून नीच वृत्तीचा नायनाट करा
then shall ye do unto him, as he had purposed to do unto his brother; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.
And those that remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of thee.
21 २१ तू दया दाखवू नये. कोणी कोणाचा जीव घेतल्यास त्यालाही देहान्ताचे शासन द्यावे. डोळ्याबद्दल डोळा, दाताबद्दल दात, हाताच्या बदल्यात हात आणि पायाच्या बदल्यात पाय असा दंड करावा.
And thine eye shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
