Waiata 106
1 Whakamoemititia a Ihowa. Whakawhetai ki a Ihowa; he pai hoki ia: he pumau tonu hoki tana mahi tohu.
Praise Yahweh! Praise Yahweh, because he does good things [for us]; he faithfully loves [us] forever/continually!
2 Me wai e korero nga mahi nunui a Ihowa: e whakakite katoa nga whakamoemiti ki a ia?
[Because Yahweh has done many great things], no one can [RHQ] tell all the great things that Yahweh has done, and no one can praise him enough/sufficiently.
3 Ka hari te hunga e mau ana ki te whakarite tika; me te kaimahi i te tika i nga wa katoa.
(Happy are/He is pleased with) those who act fairly/justly, with those who always do what is right.
4 Maharatia mai ahau, e Ihowa, kia rite ki tau manako ki tau iwi: tirotirohia mai ahau i runga i tau whakaoranga.
Yahweh, be kind to me when you help your people; help me when you rescue/save them.
5 Kia kite ai ahau i te pai o au i whiriwhiri ai: kia koa ai, koa tahi me tau iwi; kia whakamanamana tahi ai me tou kainga tupu.
Allow me to see it when your people become prosperous again and when [all the people of] your nation, [Israel], are happy; allow me to be happy with them! I want to praise you along with [all] those [others] who belong to you.
6 Kua hara tahi matou me o matou matua, kua mahi matou i te kino, i te mea he.
We and our ancestors have sinned; we have done things that were very wicked [DOU].
7 Kihai o matou matua i mohio ki au mea whakamiharo i Ihipa, kihai hoki i mahara ki te tini o au arohatanga; engari ia i whakatoi ratou ki a koe i te moana, ae, i te Moana Whero.
When our ancestors were in Egypt, they did not pay attention to the wonderful things that Yahweh did; they forgot about the many times that he showed that he faithfully loved them. Instead, when they were at the Red Sea, they rebelled against God, who is greater than any other god.
8 Otira whakaorangia ana ratou e ia, he whakaaro ki tona ingoa, kia matauria ai tona kaha.
But he rescued them for the sake of his own [reputation] in order that he could show that he is very powerful.
9 I riria ano e ia te Moana Whero, a kua maroke: na arahina ana ratou e ia i nga rire, ano ko waenga koraha.
He rebuked the Red Sea and it became dry, and [then] while he led our ancestors across it, they walked through it as though it were as dry as a desert [SIM].
10 Na whakaorangia ake ratou e ia i te ringa o te tangata i kino ki a ratou; a hokona ana ratou i roto i te ringa o te hoariri.
In that way he rescued them from the power [MTY] of their enemies who hated them [DOU].
11 A taupokina ana e nga wai o ratou hoariri, hore rawa tetahi morehu.
[Then] their enemies were drowned in the water [of the Red Sea]; not one of them was left.
12 Na whakapono ana ratou ki ana kupu: a waiata ana i te whakamoemiti ki a ia.
When that happened, our ancestors believed [that Yahweh had truly done for them] what he had promised to do, and they sang to praise him.
13 Hohoro tonu to ratou wareware ki ana mahi: kihai i taria e ratou tona whakaaro:
But they soon forgot what he had done for them; they [did things] without waiting to find out what Yahweh wanted them to do.
14 Engari i whakaputa nui i o ratou hiahia i te tahora; whakamatautau ana ratou i te Atua i te koraha.
They intensely wanted [food like they formerly ate in Egypt]. They [did evil things to] find out [if they could do those things without God punishing them].

[So] he gave them what they requested, but he [also] caused a terrible disease to afflict them.
16 I hae hoki ratou ki a Mohi i te puni, ki a Arona ano, ki te tangata tapu a Ihowa.
[Later] when [some of] the men became jealous of Moses and [his older brother] Aaron, who was dedicated [to serve Yahweh by being a priest],

the ground opened up and swallowed Dathan and [also] buried Abiram and his family.
18 A mura ana te ahi i to ratou ropu; wera ana i te mura te hunga kino.
And [God sent] a fire down [from heaven] which burned up [all] the wicked [people who (supported them/agreed with) them].

Then the [Israeli leaders] made a gold statue at Sinai [Mountain] and worshiped it.

Instead of worshiping [our] glorious God, they [started to] worship a statue of a bull that eats grass!
21 Wareware ake i a ratou te Atua, to ratou kaiwhakaora, i mahi nei i nga mea nunui ki Ihipa.
They forgot about God, who had rescued them by the great miracles that he performed in Egypt.
22 I nga mahi whakamiharo ki te whenua o Hama, i nga mea whakamataku ki te Moana Whero.
They forgot about the wonderful things that he did for them in Egypt and the amazing/awesome things that he did for them at the Red Sea.
23 Na ka mea ia, kia whakangaromia ratou, me i kaua a Mohi, tana i whiriwhiri ai, te tu ki tona aroaro i te takiwa, hei papare ake i tona riri, kei huna ratou e ia.
Because of that, God said that he would get rid of the Israelis, but Moses, whom God had chosen [to serve him], pleaded with God [not to get rid of them]. And as a result God did not destroy them.
24 Ae ra, i whakahawea ratou ki te whenua ahuareka; kihai ratou i whakapono ki tana kupu;
[Later], our ancestors (refused/were afraid) to enter beautiful [Canaan] land because they did not believe [that God would enable them to take the land from the people who were living there, as] he had promised.
25 Heoi amuamu ana i roto i o ratou teneti, kihai i whakarongo ki te reo o Ihowa.
They stayed in their tents and grumbled and would not pay attention to what Yahweh said that they should do.
26 Na reira ka ara tona ringa ki a ratou, ki te turaki i a ratou i te koraha;
So he solemnly [MTY] told them that he would cause them to die [there] in the desert,
27 Ki te turaki i o ratou uri i roto i nga iwi: ki te whakamarara i a ratou ki nga whenua.
and that he would scatter their descendants among the [people of other] nations/people-groups [who did not believe in him], and that he would allow them to die in those lands.
28 I whakauru atu hoki ratou ki a Paarapeoro: a kai ana i nga patunga tapu ma nga mea mate.
Later the Israeli people [started to] worship [the idol of] Baal [who they thought lived] at Peor [Mountain], and they ate [meat that had been] sacrificed to [Baal and those other] lifeless gods.
29 Koia i whakapataritari ai ratou i a ia ki a ratou hanga kia riri; a pakaru ana mai te mate uruta ki a ratou.
Yahweh became [very] angry because of what they had done, [so again] he sent a terrible disease to attack/strike them.
30 Na ko te whakatikanga ake o Pinehaha, ki te whakaputa whakawa: a mutu iho te mate.
But Phinehas stood up and punished/killed [the ones who had sinned greatly], and as a result the (plague/serious disease) ended.
31 I kiia ai ia he tika i nga whakatupuranga katoa ake ake.
People have remembered that righteous thing that Phinehas did, and in future years people will remember it.
32 I whakapataritari ano ratou i a ia ki nga wai o Meripa; na hemanawa ana a Mohi mo ratou:
[Then] at Meribah Springs our ancestors caused Yahweh to become angry, and as a result Moses had trouble.

They caused Moses to become very angry [IDM], and he said things that were foolish.

Our ancestors did not destroy the people [who did not believe in Yahweh] like he told them to do.

Instead, they mingled with people from those people-groups, and they started to do the evil things that those people did.
36 I mahi hoki ratou ki a ratou whakapakoko, i mahangatia ai ratou.
Our ancestors worshiped the idols of those people, which resulted in their being destroyed/exiled/taken to another country [MET].
37 Ae, i patua e ratou a ratou tama me a ratou tamahine ma nga atua maori;
[Some of] the Israelis sacrificed their sons and daughters to the demons [that those idols represented].
38 I whakahekea hoki te toto harakore, nga toto o a ratou tama, o a ratou tamahine, i patua nei e ratou ma nga whakapakoko o Kanaana; a poke iho te whenua i te toto.
They killed [MTY] their own children, who (were innocent/had not done things that were wrong), and offered them as sacrifices to the idols in Canaan. [As a result], Canaan land was polluted by those murders [MTY].
39 Na poke iho ratou i a ratou mahi: a puremu ana ki a ratou mahi.
So by their deeds they caused themselves to become unacceptable to God; [because they did not faithfully worship only God], [they became like] women who sleep with other men [instead of sleeping only with their husbands] [MET].
40 Koia i mura ai te riri o Ihowa ki tana iwi; a whakarihariha ana ia ki tona kainga tupu.
So Yahweh became very angry with his people; he was completely disgusted with them.
41 A tukua ana ratou e ia ki te ringa o nga tauiwi; waiho ana te hunga i kino ki a ratou hei rangatira mo ratou.
[As a result] he allowed people-groups [who did not believe in him] to conquer them, so those who hated our ancestors started to rule over them.
42 Na ka tukinotia ratou e o ratou hoariri: ka pehia ki raro i o ratou ringa.
Their enemies (oppressed them/treated them cruelly) and completely controlled them [MET].
43 He maha ana whakaoranga i a ratou: ko ratou ia i whakatoi ki a ia i o ratou whakaaro, a whakaititia ana i ta ratou kino.
Many times Yahweh rescued them, but they continued to rebel against him, and they were finally destroyed because of the sins that they committed.
44 Ahakoa ra, i titiro ia ki to ratou matenga, i tona rongonga i ta ratou tangi:
However, Yahweh [always] heard them when they cried out to him; he listened to them when they were distressed.
45 I mahara hoki ia ki tana kawenata ki a ratou, a rite tonu ki te tini o ana mahi aroha te putanga ketanga o ona whakaaro:
For their sake, he thought about the agreement/promise that he had made [to bless] them, and because he never stopped loving them very much, he changed his mind [about punishing them more].
46 I meinga hoki ratou e ia kia arohaina e te hunga katoa i whakaraua atu ai ratou.
He caused all those who had taken the Israelis [to Babylonia] to (feel sorry for/pity) them.
47 Whakaorangia matou, e Ihowa, e to matou Atua, kohikohia matou i roto i nga tauiwi: kia whakawhetai ai ki tou ingoa tapu, kia whakamanamana ai ki tou whakamoemiti.
Yahweh our God, rescue/save us and bring us back [to Israel] from among those people-groups in order that we may thank you [MTY] and joyfully praise you.
48 Kia whakapaingia a Ihowa, te Atua o Iharaira, i tua whakarere ano, a ake ake. A kia mea katoa te iwi, Amine. Whakamoemititia a Ihowa.
Praise Yahweh, the God whom [we] Israelis [worship], praise him now and forever! And I want everyone to say, “Amen/May it be so!” Praise Yahweh!
