< Whakatauki 1 >
1 Ko nga whakatauki a Horomona tama a Rawiri, kingi o Iharaira;
The parables of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel,
2 E mohiotia ai te whakaaro nui, te ako; e kitea ai nga kupu o te matauranga;
in order to know wisdom and discipline,
3 E riro mai ai te ako a te ngakau mahara, te tika, te whakawa, te mea ano e rite ana;
to understand words of prudence, and to accept the instruction of doctrine, justice and judgment, and equity,
4 Hei hoatu i te ngakau tupato ki nga kuware, i te matauranga, i te ngarahu pai ki te taitamariki;
so as to give discernment to little ones, knowledge and understanding to adolescents.
5 Kia whakarongo ai te tangata whakaaro nui, kia nui ake ai tona mohio; kia whiwhi ai te tangata tupato ki nga whakaaro mohio:
By listening, the wise shall become wiser and the intelligent shall possess governments.
He shall turn his soul to a parable and to its interpretation, to the words of the wise and their enigmas.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The foolish despise wisdom as well as doctrine.
8 Whakarongo, e taku tama, ki te ako a tou papa, kaua hoki e whakarerea te ture a tou whaea;
Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother,
9 Ka waiho hoki ena hei pare ataahua mo tou matenga, hei mekameka whakapaipai mo tou kaki.
so that grace may be added to your head and a collar to your neck.
My son, if sinners should entice you, do not consent to them.
11 Ki te mea ratou, Tatou ka haere, ka whakapapa atu, ka whakaheke toto; kia whanga puku tatou, he mea takekore, mo te tangata harakore:
If they should say: “Come with us. We will lie in wait for blood. We will lay traps against the innocent, without cause.
12 Horomia oratia ratou e tatou, peratia me ta te rua tupapaku; ka riro tinana ratou, ka pera me te hunga e heke atu ana ki te poka: (Sheol )
Let us swallow him alive, like Hell, and whole, like one descending into the pit. (Sheol )
We will discover every precious substance. We will fill our houses with spoils.
Cast your lot with us. One purse will be for us all.”
15 E taku tama, kaua e haere tahi i te ara me ratou; kaiponuhia tou waewae i to ratou huarahi;
My son, do not walk with them. Preclude your feet from their paths.
For their feet rush to evil, and they hurry to shed blood.
But a net is thrown in vain before the eyes of those who have wings.
18 Ko ratou, he whakaheke i o ratou toto ano i whakapapa ai ratou; he whakamate i a ratou ano i piri ai ratou.
Likewise, they lie in ambush against their own blood, and they undertake deceits against their own souls.
Thus, the ways of all those who are greedy seize the souls of those who possess.
20 E hamama ana te whakaaro nui i te huarahi; e puaki ana tona reo i nga waharoa;
Wisdom forewarns far and wide; she bestows her voice in the streets.
21 E karanga ana ia i te tino wahi whakaminenga; i te wahi tuwhera o nga kuwaha, i roto i te pa, e puaki ana ana kupu;
She cries out at the head of crowds; at the entrance of the gates of the city, she offers her words, saying:
22 E te hunga kuware, kia pehea ake te roa o to koutou aroha ki te kuwaretanga? O te hiahia ranei o te hunga whakahi ki to ratou whakahi? O te whakakino ranei a te hunga wairangi ki te matauranga?
“Little ones, how long will you choose to be childish, and how long will the foolish desire what is harmful to themselves, and how long will the imprudent hate knowledge?
Be converted by my correction. Lo, I will offer my spirit to you, and I will reveal my words to you.
24 I karanga atu hoki ahau, heoi kihai koutou i pai mai; i totoro atu toku ringa, a kihai tetahi i whai whakaaro mai;
For I called, and you refused. I extended my hand, and there was no one who watched.
25 Heoi whakakahoretia iho e koutou toku whakaaro katoa, kihai hoki i aro ki taku ako:
You have despised all my counsels, and you have neglected my rebukes.
Similarly, I will ridicule you at your demise, and I will mock you, when that which you feared shall overcome you.
27 Ina tae mai to koutou pawera ano he tupuhi, a ka pa mai to koutou aitua ano he paroro; ina tae mai te pouri me te ngakau mamae ki a koutou.
When sudden calamity rushes upon you, and your demise advances like a tempest, when tribulation and anguish overcome you,
28 Ko reira ratou karanga ai ki ahau, a e kore ahau e whakahoki kupu atu; ka rapu nui ratou i ahau, otiia e kore ahau e kitea e ratou:
then they will call to me, and I will not heed, they will arise in the morning, and not find me.
29 Mo ratou i kino ki te matauranga; kihai hoki i whiriwhiria e ratou te wehi ki a Ihowa;
For they held hatred for discipline, and they would not accept the fear of the Lord;
30 Kihai i aro mai ki oku whakaaro; whakahawea ana ratou ki taku kupu riri katoa.
they would not consent to my counsel, but they detracted from all of my corrections.
Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way, and they shall have their fill of their own counsels.
32 Ko te tahuritanga atu hoki o nga kuware hei patu i a ratou; ko te ngakau warea ano hoki o nga wairangi hei huna i a ratou.
The loathing of the little ones shall destroy them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall perish them.
33 Ko te tangata ia e rongo ana ki ahau, ka au tona noho, ka tea hoki i te wehi ki te kino.
But whoever will listen to me shall rest without terror, and shall have full enjoyment of abundance, without fear of evils.”
