1 ശമൂവേൽ 18
1 അവൻ ശൌലിനോടു സംസാരിച്ചു തീൎന്നപ്പോൾ യോനാഥാന്റെ മനസ്സു ദാവീദിന്റെ മനസ്സോടു പറ്റിച്ചേൎന്നു; യോനാഥാൻ അവനെ സ്വന്തപ്രാണനെപ്പോലെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു.
After David finished speaking with Saul, Jonathan became great friends with David. He loved David as he loved himself.
2 ശൌൽ അന്നു അവനെ ചേൎത്തു കൊണ്ടു; അവന്റെ പിതൃഭവനത്തിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോകുവാൻ പിന്നെ അനുവദിച്ചതുമില്ല.
From that time on Jonathan had David work for him and would not let him go back home.
3 യോനാഥാൻ ദാവീദിനെ സ്വന്തപ്രാണനെപ്പോലെ സ്നേഹിക്കകൊണ്ടു അവനുമായി സഖ്യതചെയ്തു.
Jonathan made a solemn agreement with David because he loved him as he loved himself.
4 യോനാഥാൻ താൻ ധരിച്ചിരുന്ന മേലങ്കി ഊരി അതും തന്റെ വസ്ത്രവും വാളും വില്ലും അരക്കച്ചയും ദാവീദിന്നു കൊടുത്തു.
Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, together with his tunic, his sword, his bow, and his belt.
5 ശൌൽ അയക്കുന്നേടത്തൊക്കെയും ദാവീദ് പോയി കാൎയ്യാദികളെ വിവേകത്തോടെ നടത്തും; അതുകൊണ്ടു ശൌൽ അവനെ പടജ്ജനത്തിന്നു മേധാവി ആക്കി; ഇതു സൎവ്വജനത്തിന്നും ശൌലിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാൎക്കും ബോധിച്ചു.
David was successful in doing everything Saul asked him to do, so Saul made him an officer in the army. This pleased everyone, including Saul's other officers.
6 ദാവീദ് ഫെലിസ്ത്യനെ സംഹരിച്ചശേഷം അവർ മടങ്ങിവരുമ്പോൾ യിസ്രായേല്യപട്ടണങ്ങളിൽനിന്നൊക്കെയും സ്ത്രീകൾ പാടിയും നൃത്തംചെയ്തുംകൊണ്ടു തപ്പും തംബുരുവുമായി സന്തോഷത്തോടെ ശൌൽരാജാവിനെ എതിരേറ്റുചെന്നു.
When the soldiers returned home after David had killed the Philistine, the women of all the towns of Israel came out singing and dancing to meet King Saul, happily celebrating with tambourines and musical instruments.
7 സ്ത്രീകൾ വാദ്യഘോഷത്തോടെ ഗാനപ്രതിഗാനമായി: ശൌൽ ആയിരത്തെ കൊന്നു ദാവീദോ പതിനായിരത്തെ എന്നു പാടി.
As they danced the women sang, “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”
8 അപ്പോൾ ശൌൽ ഏറ്റവും കോപിച്ചു; ഈ വാക്കു അവന്നു അനിഷ്ടമായി: അവർ ദാവീദിന്നു പതിനായിരം കൊടുത്തു, എനിക്കു ആയിരം മാത്രമേ തന്നുള്ളു; ഇനി രാജത്വമല്ലാതെ അവന്നു കിട്ടുവാൻ എന്തുള്ളു എന്നു അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു.
What they were singing made Saul very angry as he didn't think it was right. He said to himself, “They've given David credit for killing tens of thousands, but only thousands to me. All that's left is to give him the kingdom!”
9 അന്നുമുതൽ ശൌലിന്നു ദാവീദിനോടു കണ്ണുകടി തുടങ്ങി.
From that time on Saul viewed David with suspicion.
10 പിറ്റെന്നാൾ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ പക്കൽ നിന്നുള്ള ദുരാത്മാവു ശൌലിന്മേൽ വന്നു; അവൻ അരമനക്കകത്തു ഉറഞ്ഞുപറഞ്ഞു; ദാവീദോ പതിവുപോലെ കിന്നരം വായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു; ശൌലിന്റെ കയ്യിൽ ഒരു കുന്തം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
The following day an evil spirit from God came on Saul with power, and he was ranting inside the house while David played the harp as he regularly did. Saul happened to be holding a spear,
11 ദാവീദിനെ ചുവരോടുചേൎത്തു കുത്തുവാൻ വിചാരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു ശൌൽ കുന്തം ചാട്ടി; എന്നാൽ ദാവീദ് രണ്ടുപ്രാവശ്യം അവന്റെ മുമ്പിൽനിന്നു മാറിക്കളഞ്ഞു.
and he threw it at David, saying to himself, “I'll pin David to the wall.” But David managed to escape him twice.
12 യഹോവ ദാവീദിനോടുകൂടെ ഇരിക്കയും ശൌലിനെ വിട്ടുമാറുകയും ചെയ്തതുകൊണ്ടു ശൌൽ ദാവീദിനെ ഭയപ്പെട്ടു.
Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with David, but he had given up on Saul.
13 അതുകൊണ്ടു ശൌൽ അവനെ തന്റെ അടുക്കൽനിന്നു മാറ്റി സഹസ്രാധിപനാക്കി; അങ്ങനെ അവൻ ജനത്തിന്നു നായകനായി പെരുമാറിപ്പോന്നു.
So Saul sent David away and made him a commander of a thousand soldiers, leading them out and back as part of the army.
14 ദാവീദ് തന്റെ എല്ലാവഴികളിലും വിവേകത്തോടെ നടന്നു; യഹോവ അവനോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
David was very successful in everything he did, because the Lord was with him.
15 അവൻ ഏറ്റവും വിവേകത്തോടെ നടക്കുന്നു എന്നു ശൌൽ കണ്ടിട്ടു അവങ്കൽ ആശങ്കിതനായ്തീൎന്നു.
When Saul saw how successful David was, he was even more afraid of him.
16 എന്നാൽ ദാവീദ് യിസ്രായേലിന്നും യെഹൂദെക്കും നായകനായി പെരുമാറിയതുകൊണ്ടു അവരൊക്കെയും അവനെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു.
But everyone in Israel and Judah loved David, because of his leadership in the army.
17 അനന്തരം ശൌൽ ദാവീദിനോടു: എന്റെ മൂത്ത മകൾ മേരബുണ്ടല്ലോ; ഞാൻ അവളെ നിനക്കു ഭാൎയ്യയായി തരും; നീ ശൂരനായി എനിക്കുവേണ്ടി യഹോവയുടെ യുദ്ധങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയാൽ മതി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്റെ കയ്യല്ല ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ കൈ അവന്റെമേൽ വീഴുവാൻ സംഗതിവരട്ടെ എന്നു ശൌൽ വിചാരിച്ചു.
One day Saul told David, “Here's my oldest daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage, but only if you prove to me you're a brave warrior and fight the battles of the Lord.” For Saul was thinking, “I don't need to be the one to kill him—let the Philistines do it!”
18 ദാവീദ് ശൌലിനോടു: രാജാവിന്റെ മരുമകനായിരിപ്പാൻ ഞാൻ ആർ? യിസ്രായേലിൽ എന്റെ അസ്മാദികളും എന്റെ പിതൃഭവനവും എന്തുള്ളു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
“But who am I, and what status does my family have in Israel, for me to become the son-in-law of the king?” David replied.
19 ശൌലിന്റെ മകളായ മേരബിനെ ദാവീദിന്നു കൊടുക്കേണ്ടിയിരുന്ന സമയത്തു അവളെ മെഹോലാത്യനായ അദ്രിയേലിന്നു ഭാൎയ്യയായി കൊടുത്തു.
However, when the time came to give Merab, Saul's daughter, to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah instead.
20 ശൌലിന്റെ മകളായ മീഖളോ ദാവീദിനെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു. അതു ശൌലിന്നു അറിവു കിട്ടി; കാൎയ്യം അവന്നു ഇഷ്ടമായി.
Meanwhile Saul's daughter Michal had fallen in love with David, and when Saul was told, he was happy about it.
21 അവൾ അവന്നു ഒരു കണിയായിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന്നും ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ കൈ അവന്റെമേൽ വീഴേണ്ടതിന്നും ഞാൻ അവളെ അവന്നു കൊടുക്കും എന്നു ശൌൽ വിചാരിച്ചു ദാവീദിനോടു: നീ ഈ രണ്ടാം പ്രാവശ്യം എനിക്കു മരുമകനായി തീരേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
“I'll give her to David,” Saul thought. “She can be the bait so the Philistines can trap him.” So Saul said to David, “This is the second time you can become my son-in-law.”
22 പിന്നെ ശൌൽ തന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാരോടു: നിങ്ങൾ സ്വകാൎയ്യമായി ദാവീദിനോടു സംസാരിച്ചു: ഇതാ, രാജാവിന്നു നിന്നെ പ്രിയമാകുന്നു; അവന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാർ ഒക്കെയും നിന്നെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു; ആകയാൽ നീ രാജാവിന്റെ മരുമകനായ്തീരേണം എന്നു പറവിൻ എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു.
Saul gave these instructions to his servants, “Talk with David in private and tell him, ‘Look, the king is very happy with you, and all of us love you. Why not become the king's son-in-law?’”
23 ശൌലിന്റെ ഭൃത്യന്മാർ ആ വാക്കു ദാവീദിനോടു പറഞ്ഞാറെ ദാവീദ്: രാജാവിന്റെ മരുമകനാകുന്നതു അല്പകാൎയ്യമെന്നു നിങ്ങൾക്കു തോന്നുന്നുവോ? ഞാൻ ദരിദ്രനും എളിയവനും ആകുന്നുവല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
Saul's servants spoke privately to David, but he replied, “Do you think it's nothing to become the king's son-in-law? I'm a poor man, and I'm not important.”
24 ശൌലിന്റെ ദൃത്യന്മാർ: ദാവീദ് ഇപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞു എന്നു ബോധിപ്പിച്ചു.
When Saul's servants explained to him what David had said,
25 അതിന്നു ശൌൽ: രാജാവിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കൾക്കു പ്രതികാരം ആകുവാൻ തക്കവണ്ണം ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ നൂറു അഗ്രചൎമ്മമല്ലാതെ രാജാവു യാതൊരു സ്ത്രീധനവും ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിങ്ങൾ ദാവീദിനോടു പറയേണം എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു; ഫെലിസ്ത്യരുടെ കയ്യാൽ ദാവീദിനെ വീഴുമാറാക്കേണമെന്നു ശൌൽ കരുതിയിരുന്നു.
Saul told them, “Tell David, ‘The only dowry the king wants for the bride is one hundred foreskins of dead Philistine as a way of taking revenge on his enemies.’” Saul's plan was to have David be killed by the Philistines.
26 ഭൃത്യന്മാർ ദാവീദിനോടു ഈ വാക്കു അറിയിച്ചപ്പോൾ രാജാവിന്റെ മരുമകനാകുവാൻ ദാവീദിന്നു സന്തോഷമായി;
When the servants reported what the king had said back to David, he was happy to become the king's son-in-law. While there was still time,
27 അവധി കഴിയുന്നതിന്നു മുമ്പെ ദാവീദും അവന്റെ ആളുകളും പുറപ്പെട്ടുചെന്നു ഫെലിസ്ത്യരിൽ ഇരുനൂറു പേരെ കൊന്നു, അവരുടെ അഗ്രചൎമ്മം കൊണ്ടുവന്നു താൻ രാജാവിന്റെ മരുമകനാകേണ്ടതിന്നു രാജാവിന്നു എണ്ണംകൊടുത്തു. ശൌൽ തന്റെ മകളായ മീഖളിനെ അവന്നു ഭാൎയ്യയായി കൊടുത്തു.
David set off with his men and killed two hundred Philistines, and brought back their foreskins. They counted them all out before the king so that David could become the king's son-in-law. So Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
28 യഹോവ ദാവീദിനോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ടെന്നും ശൌലിന്റെ മകളായ മീഖൾ അവനെ സ്നേഹിച്ചു എന്നും ശൌൽ കണ്ടറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ,
Saul realized that the Lord was with David and that his daughter Michal was in love with David,
29 ശൌൽ ദാവീദിനെ പിന്നെയും അധികം ഭയപ്പെട്ടു; ശൌൽ ദാവീദിന്റെ നിത്യശത്രുവായ്തീൎന്നു.
and so he became even more afraid of David, and was David's enemy for the rest of his life.
30 എന്നാൽ ഫെലിസ്ത്യപ്രഭുക്കന്മാർ യുദ്ധത്തിന്നു പുറപ്പെട്ടു; അവർ പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോഴൊക്കെയും ദാവീദ് ശൌലിന്റെ സകലഭൃത്യന്മാരെക്കാളും കൃതാൎത്ഥനായിരുന്നു; അവന്റെ പേർ വിശ്രുതമായ്തീൎന്നു.
Whenever the Philistine commanders attacked, David was more successful in battle than all of Saul's officers, so that his reputation grew rapidly.
