മത്തായി 23
1 അതിനുശേഷം യേശു ജനക്കൂട്ടത്തോടും തന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരോടുമായി ഇപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞു:
THEN Jesus spake to the multitudes and to his disciples,
2 “വേദജ്ഞരും പരീശന്മാരും മോശയുടെ സിംഹാസനത്തിൽ ഉപവിഷ്ടരാണ്.
saying, The scribes and Pharisees are seated on the chair of Moses;
3 അതുകൊണ്ട് അവർ നിങ്ങളോടു പറയുന്നതെല്ലാം സസൂക്ഷ്മം അനുവർത്തിക്കണം; എന്നാൽ, അവരുടെ ജീവിതശൈലി മാതൃകയാക്കരുത്. കാരണം, തങ്ങൾ ഉപദേശിക്കുന്നതല്ല, അവർ അനുവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്നത്.
all things therefore which they prescribe for you to observe, observe and practise; but do not according to their works, for they say, yet do not practise.
4 അവർ ഭാരമുള്ളതും ചുമക്കാൻ വളരെ പ്രയാസമുള്ളതുമായ ചുമടുകൾ കെട്ടി മനുഷ്യരുടെ തോളിൽ വെക്കുന്നു; എന്നാൽ ഒരു വിരൽകൊണ്ടുപോലും സ്പർശിച്ച് ആ ഭാരം ലഘൂകരിക്കാനുള്ള സന്മനസ്സ് അവർക്കില്ല.
For they bind burdens grievous, and difficultly borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they will not move them with a finger of their own.
5 “മനുഷ്യരുടെ ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചുപറ്റുന്നതിനുവേണ്ടി മാത്രമാണ് അവർ എല്ലാം ചെയ്യുന്നത്. അവർ അവരുടെ വേദപ്പട്ടകൾക്കു വീതിയും പുറങ്കുപ്പായത്തിന്റെ തൊങ്ങലുകൾക്കു നീളവും കൂട്ടുന്നു.
And all their works they do to be seen of men: they make their phylacteries broad, and deepen the fringes of their garments,
6 വിരുന്നുകളിൽ ആദരണീയർക്കായി വേർതിരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ഇരിപ്പിടവും പള്ളികളിൽ പ്രധാന ഇരിപ്പിടങ്ങളും അവർ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു.
and love the principal couch at suppers, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 ജനം ചന്തസ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ അവരെ അഭിവാദനംചെയ്യുന്നതും ‘റബ്ബീ’ എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നതും അവർ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നു.
and salutations in the places of public concourse, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 “ആരും നിങ്ങളെ ‘റബ്ബീ’ എന്നു വിളിക്കാൻ അനുവദിക്കരുത്. ഒരാൾമാത്രമാണ് നിങ്ങളുടെ ഗുരു; നിങ്ങളെല്ലാവരും പരസ്പരം സഹോദരീസഹോദരന്മാർമാത്രം.
But be not ye called Rabbi, for one is your leader, the Messiah; and ye all are brethren.
9 ഭൂമിയിൽ ആരെയും ബഹുമാനാർഥം ‘പിതാവ്’ എന്ന് അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്യരുത്; സ്വർഗസ്ഥപിതാവെന്ന ഒരേയൊരു പിതാവേ നിങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളൂ.
And call no man your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven.
10 നിങ്ങളിൽ ആരും ‘ഗുരു’ എന്നു വിളിക്കപ്പെടരുത്; ക്രിസ്തുമാത്രമാണ് നിങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള ഏക ‘ഗുരു.’
And be not called leaders; for one is your leader, the Messiah.
11 നിങ്ങളിൽ ഉന്നതസ്ഥാനികൾ നിങ്ങളുടെ സേവകർ ആയിരിക്കണം.
But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 കാരണം, സ്വയം ഉയർത്തുന്നയാൾ അപമാനിതനാകും; സ്വയം താഴ്ത്തുന്നയാൾ ബഹുമാനിതനും.
For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and whosoever abaseth himself shall be exalted.
13 “കപടഭക്തരായ വേദജ്ഞരേ, പരീശന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! നിങ്ങൾ സ്വർഗരാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വാതിൽ മനുഷ്യർക്കുനേരേ കൊട്ടിയടച്ചുകളയുന്നു. നിങ്ങൾ അതിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നില്ലെന്നുമാത്രമല്ല, പ്രവേശിക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നവരെ അനുവദിക്കുന്നതുമില്ല.
Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the kingdom of heaven from men; for ye yourselves enter not in, and those who were coming in, ye suffer not to enter.
14 കപടഭക്തരായ വേദജ്ഞരേ, പരീശന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! നിങ്ങൾ വിധവകളെ ചൂഷണംചെയ്ത് അവരുടെ വീടുകൾ കവർന്നെടുക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ, മറ്റുള്ളവരെ കേൾപ്പിക്കേണ്ടതിന് ദീർഘമായി പ്രാർഥിക്കുന്നു. മറ്റുള്ളവർക്കു ലഭിക്കുന്നതിലും അതിഭീകരമായ ശിക്ഷ നിങ്ങൾക്കു ലഭിക്കും.
Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: wherefore ye shall receive greater condemnation.
15 “കപടഭക്തരായ വേദജ്ഞരേ, പരീശന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! ഒരാളെ മതപരിവർത്തനം ചെയ്യാൻ നിങ്ങൾ കരയും കടലും ചുറ്റിസഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു. ആ വ്യക്തി നിങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം ചേർന്നാലോ; നിങ്ങൾക്കു ലഭിക്കാനിരിക്കുന്ന നരകശിക്ഷയുടെ ഇരട്ടിക്ക് അവരെ അർഹരാക്കുന്നു. (Geenna g1067)
Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he is gained, ye make him doubly more the child of hell than yourselves. (Geenna g1067)
16 “അന്ധന്മാരായ വഴികാട്ടികളേ, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! ‘ഒരാൾ ദൈവാലയത്തെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണയിട്ടാൽ സാരമില്ല എന്നും ദൈവാലയത്തിലെ സ്വർണത്തെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണയിട്ടാൽ അയാൾ തന്റെ ശപഥം നിറവേറ്റാൻ ബാധ്യസ്ഥനാണെന്നും,’ നിങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നു.
Wo unto you ye blind guides! who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, it is binding.
17 അന്ധന്മാരേ, ഭോഷന്മാരേ, ഏതാണ് ശ്രേഷ്ഠം? സ്വർണമോ സ്വർണത്തെ പവിത്രമാക്കുന്ന ദൈവാലയമോ?
Ye fools and blind! for which is the greater, the gold, or the temple which consecrates the gold?
18 ആരെങ്കിലും, ‘യാഗപീഠത്തെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണയിട്ടാൽ സാരമില്ല എന്നും അതിന്മേലുള്ള വഴിപാടിനെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണയിട്ടാൽ അയാളതു നിറവേറ്റാൻ ബാധ്യസ്ഥനാണെന്നും’ നിങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നു.
And again, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, it is binding.
19 ഹേ അന്ധന്മാരേ, ഏതാണ് ശ്രേഷ്ഠമായിട്ടുള്ളത്? വഴിപാടോ, വഴിപാടിനെ പവിത്രമാക്കുന്ന യാഗപീഠമോ?
Ye fools and blind! which is the greater, the gift, or the altar which consecrates the gift?
20 അതിനാൽ യാഗപീഠത്തെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണയിടുന്ന വ്യക്തി യാഗപീഠത്തെയും അതിന്മേലുള്ള സകലത്തെയുംചൊല്ലി ആണയിടുന്നു.
Whosoever therefore sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things that are upon it.
21 ദൈവാലയത്തെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണയിടുന്നയാൾ ദൈവാലയത്തെയും അതിൽ നിവസിക്കുന്ന ദൈവത്തെയുംചൊല്ലി ആണയിടുന്നു.
And whosoever sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him also who dwelleth in it.
22 സ്വർഗത്തെക്കൊണ്ട് ആണയിടുന്നയാൾ ദൈവസിംഹാസനത്തെയും അതിന്മേൽ ഉപവിഷ്ടനായിരിക്കുന്ന ദൈവത്തെയുംകൊണ്ടാണ് ആണയിടുന്നത്.
So he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him who is seated upon it.
23 “കപടഭക്തരായ വേദജ്ഞരേ, പരീശന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങൾക്കു ഹാ കഷ്ടം! പുതിന, അയമോദകം, ജീരകം എന്നിവയിൽനിന്നു ലഭിക്കുന്ന നിസ്സാര വരുമാനത്തിൽനിന്നുപോലും നിങ്ങൾ ദശാംശം നൽകുന്നു. എന്നാൽ, ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തിലെ പ്രാധാന്യമേറിയ കാര്യങ്ങളായ നീതി, കരുണ, വിശ്വസ്തത എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ളവയോ, നിങ്ങൾ അവഗണിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. പ്രാധാന്യമേറിയവ പാലിക്കുകയും പ്രാധാന്യം കുറഞ്ഞവ അവഗണിക്കാതിരിക്കുകയുമാണ് വേണ്ടിയിരുന്നത്.
Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithes of mint, and anise, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier precepts of the law, judgment, and mercy, and fidelity: these thing ought ye to have done, and not to leave the others undone.
24 അന്ധന്മാരായ വഴികാട്ടികളേ, കീടത്തെ അരിച്ചുകളയുന്ന നിങ്ങൾ ഒട്ടകത്തെ വിഴുങ്ങുന്നു!
Ye blind guides! who strain out a gnat, but gulp down a camel.
25 “കപടഭക്തരായ വേദജ്ഞരേ, പരീശന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അയ്യോ കഷ്ടം! നിങ്ങൾ പാനപാത്രത്തിന്റെയും തളികയുടെയും പുറം വൃത്തിയാക്കുന്നു; എന്നാൽ അകമോ അത്യാർത്തിയും സ്വാർഥതയുംകൊണ്ട് നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.
Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye cleanse the outside of the cup, and of the dish, but within they are full of rapacity and intemperance.
26 അന്ധനായ പരീശാ, ആദ്യം പാനപാത്രത്തിന്റെയും തളികയുടെയും അകത്തുള്ളത് ശുദ്ധമെന്ന് ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുക; അപ്പോൾ പുറവും ശുദ്ധമായിത്തീരും.
Thou blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and dish, that their outside may become clean also.
27 “കപടഭക്തരായ വേദജ്ഞരേ, പരീശന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങൾക്കു ഹാ കഷ്ടം! വെള്ളപൂശി അലങ്കരിച്ച ശവക്കല്ലറകൾപോലെയാണ് നിങ്ങൾ. പുറമേ കാഴ്ചയ്ക്ക് നല്ല ഭംഗിയുള്ളതെങ്കിലും അകമേ, അവ മരിച്ചവരുടെ അസ്ഥികളാലും സകലവിധ മാലിന്യങ്ങളാലും നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.
Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye resemble tombs whitewashed, which outwardly indeed appear specious, but within are full of dead men’s bones, and all manner of impurity.
28 അതുപോലെതന്നെ, നിങ്ങളും ജനമധ്യേ നീതിനിഷ്ഠരായി കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. പക്ഷേ, ഉള്ളിലോ കപടഭക്തിയും ദുഷ്ടതയും നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു.
And just so, ye without indeed appear to men righteous, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 “കപടഭക്തരായ വേദജ്ഞരേ, പരീശന്മാരേ, നിങ്ങൾക്കു ഹാ കഷ്ടം! പ്രവാചകന്മാർക്കുവേണ്ടി നിങ്ങൾ ശവകുടീരങ്ങൾ പണിയുകയും നീതിനിഷ്ഠരുടെ കല്ലറകൾ അലങ്കരിക്കുകയുംചെയ്യുന്നു.
Wo unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the sepulchres of the just,
30 ‘ഞങ്ങളുടെ പിതൃക്കളുടെ കാലത്തായിരുന്നു ഞങ്ങൾ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നതെങ്കിൽ പ്രവാചകരുടെ രക്തം ചൊരിയിക്കുന്നതിൽ ഞങ്ങൾ പങ്കുകാരാകുകയില്ലായിരുന്നു’ എന്നും നിങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നു.
and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 ഇങ്ങനെ, പ്രവാചകരെ കൊന്നവരുടെ പിൻഗാമികളെന്നു നിങ്ങൾതന്നെ നിങ്ങൾക്കെതിരായി സാക്ഷ്യം പറയുന്നു.
Wherefore ye bear a testimony to yourselves, that ye are the children of those who killed the prophets.
32 നിങ്ങളുടെ പൂർവികർ ആരംഭിച്ചത് നിങ്ങൾതന്നെ പൂർത്തീകരിക്കുക.
Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
Ye serpents, ye broods of vipers! how can ye escape from the damnation of hell? (Geenna g1067)
34 നിങ്ങളുടെ അടുത്തേക്കു പ്രവാചകന്മാരെയും വിജ്ഞാനികളെയും വേദജ്ഞരെയും ഞാൻ അയയ്ക്കുന്നു. അവരിൽ ചിലരെ നിങ്ങൾ ക്രൂശിൽ തറച്ചു കൊല്ലുകയും മറ്റുചിലരെ നിങ്ങളുടെ പള്ളികളിൽവെച്ചു ചമ്മട്ടികൊണ്ട് അടിക്കുകയും പട്ടണംതോറും വേട്ടയാടുകയും ചെയ്യും.
Therefore, behold, I am sending to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and some of them ye shall kill, and crucify; and some of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:
35 അങ്ങനെ, നീതിനിഷ്ഠനായ ഹാബേലിന്റെ രക്തംമുതൽ ദൈവാലയത്തിനും യാഗപീഠത്തിനും മധ്യേവെച്ച് ബേരെഖ്യാവിന്റെ മകൻ സെഖര്യാവിനെ കൊന്ന് നിങ്ങൾ ചിന്തിയ രക്തംവരെ, ഭൂമിയിൽ ചൊരിഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ള സകലനീതിനിഷ്ഠരുടെ രക്തത്തിന്റെയും ഉത്തരവാദികൾ നിങ്ങൾ ആയിരിക്കും.
that upon you may come all the righteous blood which hath been poured out upon the earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel, to the blood of Zachariah, son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 ഇവയെല്ലാം ഈ തലമുറമേൽ നിശ്ചയമായും വരും എന്നു ഞാൻ നിങ്ങളോടു പറയുന്നു.
Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come on this generation.
37 “ജെറുശലേമേ, ജെറുശലേമേ, പ്രവാചകന്മാരെ വധിക്കുകയും നിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്കയയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ട സന്ദേശവാഹകരെ കല്ലെറിയുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നവളേ, കോഴി തന്റെ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ ചിറകിൻകീഴിൽ ചേർത്തണയ്ക്കുന്നതുപോലെ നിന്റെ മക്കളെ ചേർത്തണയ്ക്കാൻ എത്രതവണ ഞാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു; നിങ്ങൾക്കോ അത് ഇഷ്ടമായില്ല.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest those who were sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children to me, as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not?
38 ഇതാ, നിങ്ങളുടെ ഭവനം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.
Behold, your habitation is left unto you desolate.
39 ‘കർത്താവിന്റെ നാമത്തിൽ വരുന്നവൻ വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെട്ടവൻ’ എന്നു നിങ്ങൾ പറയുന്നതുവരെ ഇനി നിങ്ങൾ എന്നെ കാണുകയില്ല എന്നു ഞാൻ നിങ്ങളോടു പറയുന്നു.”
For I tell you, Ye shall henceforth no more see me, until ye say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
