യോനാ 1

1 അമിത്ഥായുടെ പുത്രനായ യോനായോട് യഹോവ ഇപ്രകാരം അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു:

Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2 “നീ വേഗത്തിൽ മഹാനഗരമായ നിനവേയിൽ ചെന്ന്, ഞാൻ നിനക്കു നൽകുന്ന ന്യായവിധിയുടെ സന്ദേശം അവിടെ വിളംബരംചെയ്യുക; അവരുടെ ദുഷ്ടത ഞാൻ അറിയുന്നു.”

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

3 എന്നാൽ യോനാ യഹോവയുടെ കൽപ്പന അനുസരിക്കാതെ തർശീശിലേക്കു പലായനം ചെയ്യുന്നതിനുവേണ്ടി യോപ്പയിലേക്കു ചെന്നു. അവിടെ തർശീശിലേക്കു പോകുന്ന ഒരു കപ്പൽ കണ്ടു. അദ്ദേഹം യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയിൽനിന്ന് തർശീശിലേക്കു പോകേണ്ടതിന് യാത്രക്കൂലി നൽകി, മറ്റുയാത്രക്കാരോടൊപ്പം അതിൽ കയറി.

But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

4 എന്നാൽ യഹോവ കടലിന്മേൽ ഒരു കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ് അടിപ്പിച്ചു; വലിയ കാറ്റിൽപ്പെട്ട് കപ്പൽ തകരുമെന്ന സ്ഥിതിയിലായി.

But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

5 പ്രാണഭയത്തിലായ നാവികർ ഓരോരുത്തരും അവരവരുടെ ദേവന്മാരോടു സഹായത്തിനായി അലമുറയിട്ടു. കപ്പലിന്റെ ഭാരം കുറയ്ക്കാൻ അവർ ചരക്ക് കടലിൽ എറിഞ്ഞുകളഞ്ഞു. യോനായാകട്ടെ, കപ്പലിന്റെ അടിത്തട്ടിൽ ചെന്നു കിടന്നു; അദ്ദേഹം ഗാഢനിദ്രയിലാണ്ടു.

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

6 കപ്പിത്താൻ വന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തോട് ആക്രോശിച്ചു: “എന്ത്, നീ ഉറങ്ങുകയോ? എഴുന്നേറ്റ്, നിന്റെ ദേവനെ വിളിക്കുക; നാം നശിച്ചുപോകാതിരിക്കേണ്ടതിന് ആ ദേവൻ ഒരുപക്ഷേ, നമ്മെ രക്ഷിച്ചേക്കാം.”

So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, What mean you, O sleeper? arise, call on your God, if so be that God will think on us, that we perish not.

7 തുടർന്ന് നാവികർ പരസ്പരം കൂടി ആലോചിച്ചു: “വരൂ, ആർ നിമിത്തമാണ് ഈ അത്യാപത്ത് നമ്മുടെമേൽ വന്നതെന്ന് അറിയുന്നതിനായി നമുക്കു നറുക്കിടാം.” അങ്ങനെ അവർ നറുക്കിട്ടു; നറുക്ക് യോനായ്ക്കു വീണു.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is on us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

8 അപ്പോൾ അവർ യോനായോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു, “പറയൂ, ഈ അത്യാപത്ത് നമ്മുടെമേൽ വന്നതിന് കാരണക്കാരൻ ആരാണ്? നിന്റെ തൊഴിൽ എന്താണ്? നീ എവിടെനിന്നു വരുന്നു? നിന്റെ രാജ്യം ഏതാണ്? ഏതു ജനതയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടവനാണ് നീ?”

Then said they to him, Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is on us; What is your occupation? and from where come you? what is your country? and of what people are you?

9 “ഞാൻ ഒരു എബ്രായനാണ്, കടലിനെയും കരയെയും സൃഷ്ടിച്ച സ്വർഗീയനായ ദൈവമായ യഹോവയെ ഞാൻ ആരാധിക്കുന്നു,” അദ്ദേഹം അവരോടു മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.

And he said to them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which has made the sea and the dry land.

10 അപ്പോൾ അവർ ഭയവിഹ്വലരായി അദ്ദേഹത്തോട്, “നീ എന്തിനിങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തു?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു—യോനാ യഹോവയുടെ സന്നിധിയിൽനിന്ന് ഓടിപ്പോകുകയാണ് എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം അവരോടു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നതിനാൽ ഇക്കാര്യം അവർക്ക് അറിയാമായിരുന്നു.

Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him. Why have you done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

11 കടൽക്ഷോഭം കൂടുതൽ ശക്തമായിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നതിനാൽ അവർ അദ്ദേഹത്തോട്: “കടൽ ശാന്തമാകേണ്ടതിന് ഞങ്ങൾ നിന്നെ എന്തു ചെയ്യണം?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.

Then said they to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us? for the sea worked, and was tempestuous.

12 “എന്നെ എടുത്ത് കടലിലേക്ക് എറിഞ്ഞുകളയുക, അപ്പോൾ കടൽ ശാന്തമാകും,” അദ്ദേഹം മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു, “ഈ കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ് നിങ്ങളുടെമേൽ ആഞ്ഞടിക്കുന്നത് എന്റെ കുറ്റം നിമിത്തമാണ് എന്ന് എനിക്കറിയാം.”

And he said to them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is on you.

13 അവർ സർവശക്തിയും ഉപയോഗിച്ചു കപ്പൽ കരയ്ക്കടുപ്പിക്കേണ്ടതിന് തുഴഞ്ഞു എങ്കിലും കടൽക്ഷോഭം വർധിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നതിനാൽ അവർക്കതിനു സാധിച്ചില്ല.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea worked, and was tempestuous against them.

14 അപ്പോൾ അവർ യഹോവയോടു നിലവിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിച്ചു: “യഹോവേ, ഈ മനുഷ്യന്റെ കുറ്റംനിമിത്തം ഞങ്ങൾ നശിച്ചുപോകരുതേ; ഒരു നിർദോഷിയെ കൊലചെയ്തു എന്ന പാതകം ഞങ്ങളുടെമേൽ വരുത്തരുതേ!” എന്നപേക്ഷിച്ചു; “യഹോവേ, അങ്ങയുടെ ഇഷ്ടംപോലെ അങ്ങ് ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നല്ലോ.”

Why they cried to the LORD, and said, We beseech you, O LORD, we beseech you, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood: for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you.

15 പിന്നെ അവർ യോനായെ എടുത്തു കടലിൽ എറിഞ്ഞു, ഉടൻതന്നെ കടൽ ശാന്തമാകുകയും ചെയ്തു.

So they look up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

16 അപ്പോൾ അവർ യഹോവയെ അത്യധികം ഭയപ്പെട്ടു; യഹോവയ്ക്ക് അവർ യാഗം അർപ്പിക്കുകയും നേർച്ചകൾ നേരുകയും ചെയ്തു.

Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the LORD, and made vows.

17 യോനായെ വിഴുങ്ങാൻ ഒരു മഹാമത്സ്യത്തെ യഹോവ നിയോഗിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ യോനാ മൂന്നുപകലും മൂന്നുരാവും ആ മത്സ്യത്തിന്റെ വയറ്റിൽ ആയിരുന്നു.

Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
