യോഹന്നാൻ 18
1 പ്രാർഥനയ്ക്കുശേഷം യേശു അവിടംവിട്ടു ശിഷ്യന്മാരുമായി കെദ്രോൻ താഴ്വരയുടെ മറുവശത്തേക്കുപോയി. അവിടെ ഒരു ഒലിവുതോട്ടം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. യേശു ശിഷ്യന്മാരുമൊത്ത് അതിൽ പ്രവേശിച്ചു.
When Jesus had said this, he went out with his disciples and crossed the Kidron ravine to a place where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples went.
2 യേശുവും ശിഷ്യന്മാരും പലപ്പോഴും അവിടെ ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂടിയിരുന്നതിനാൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഒറ്റിക്കൊടുക്കുന്ന യൂദാ ആ സ്ഥലം അറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.
The place was well known to Judas, the betrayer, for Jesus and his disciples had often met there.
3 യൂദാ ഒരുസംഘം സൈനികരെയും പുരോഹിതമുഖ്യന്മാരും പരീശന്മാരും അയച്ച ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരെയും കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു തോട്ടത്തിലെത്തി. അവർ തീപ്പന്തങ്ങളും റാന്തലുകളും ആയുധങ്ങളും വഹിച്ചിരുന്നു.
So Judas, who had obtained the soldiers of the Roman garrison, and some guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 തനിക്കു നേരിടാനുള്ളതെല്ലാം അറിഞ്ഞിട്ട് യേശു പുറത്തുചെന്ന്, “നിങ്ങൾ ആരെയാണ് അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നത്?” എന്ന് അവരോടു ചോദിച്ചു.
Jesus, aware of all that was coming upon him, went to meet them, and said to them, “For whom are you looking?”
5 “നസറായനായ യേശുവിനെ,” അവർ പറഞ്ഞു. “അത് ഞാൻ ആകുന്നു,” എന്ന് യേശു പറഞ്ഞു. അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഒറ്റിക്കൊടുത്ത യൂദാ അവരോടുകൂടെ നിന്നിരുന്നു.
“Jesus of Nazareth,” was their answer. “I am he,” said Jesus. (Judas, the betrayer, was also standing with them.)
6 “അത് ഞാൻ ആകുന്നു,” എന്ന് യേശു പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അവർ പിറകോട്ടു മാറി നിലത്തുവീണു.
When Jesus said ‘I am he,’ they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 “ആരെയാണ് നിങ്ങൾ അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നത്?” യേശു വീണ്ടും ചോദിച്ചു. “നസറായനായ യേശുവിനെ,” അവർ പറഞ്ഞു.
So he again asked for whom they were looking, and they answered, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 “ഞാൻ ആകുന്നു അതെന്നു നിങ്ങളോടു പറഞ്ഞല്ലോ! നിങ്ങൾ എന്നെയാണ് അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിൽ ഇവർ പൊയ്ക്കൊള്ളട്ടെ,” എന്ന് യേശു പറഞ്ഞു.
“I have already told you that I am he,” replied Jesus, “so, if it is for me that you are looking, let these people go.”
9 “അങ്ങ് എനിക്കു തന്നവരിൽ ആരും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിട്ടില്ല,” എന്ന് യേശു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്ന വാക്കുകൾ നിറവേറാൻ ഇതു സംഭവിച്ചു.
This was in fulfillment of his words – ‘Of those whom you have given me I have not lost one.’
10 അപ്പോൾ ശിമോൻ പത്രോസ്, കൈവശമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന വാൾ ഊരി മഹാപുരോഹിതന്റെ ദാസനെ വെട്ടി, അയാളുടെ വലതുകാത് ഛേദിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞു. ആ ദാസന്റെ പേര് മൽക്കൊസ് എന്നായിരുന്നു.
At this, Simon Peter, who had a sword with him, drew it, and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 “നിന്റെ വാൾ ഉറയിലിടുക,” യേശു പത്രോസിനോട് ആജ്ഞാപിച്ചു. “പിതാവ് എനിക്കു തന്ന പാനപാത്രം ഞാൻ കുടിക്കേണ്ടതല്ലേ?” എന്ന് യേശു ചോദിച്ചു.
But Jesus said to Peter, “Sheathe your sword. Should I not drink the cup which the Father has given me?”
12 അതിനുശേഷം സൈന്യാധിപനും സൈന്യത്തിന്റെ ഒരുവിഭാഗവും യെഹൂദയുദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരുംകൂടി യേശുവിനെ പിടിച്ചു.
So the soldiers of the garrison, with their commanding officer and the Jewish guards, arrested Jesus and bound him,
13 അവർ യേശുവിനെ ബന്ധിച്ച് ആദ്യം ഹന്നാവിന്റെ അടുത്തു കൊണ്ടുപോയി. അയാൾ ആ വർഷത്തെ മഹാപുരോഹിതനായിരുന്ന കയ്യഫാവിന്റെ ഭാര്യാപിതാവ് ആയിരുന്നു.
and took him first of all to Annas. Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
14 ഈ കയ്യഫാവ് ആയിരുന്നു “ജനങ്ങൾക്കുവേണ്ടി ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ മരിക്കുന്നത് ഉചിതം,” എന്ന് യെഹൂദനേതാക്കന്മാർക്ക് ഉപദേശം നൽകിയത്.
It was Caiaphas who had counseled the religious authorities, that it was best that one person should die for the people.
15 ശിമോൻ പത്രോസും മറ്റൊരു ശിഷ്യനും യേശുവിനെ അനുഗമിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഈ ശിഷ്യൻ മഹാപുരോഹിതനു പരിചയമുള്ളവൻ ആയിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് യേശുവിനോടുകൂടെ മഹാപുരോഹിതന്റെ അരമനാങ്കണത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു.
Meanwhile Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. That disciple, being well-known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard,
16 എന്നാൽ, പത്രോസിന് വാതിലിനു പുറത്തുതന്നെ നിൽക്കേണ്ടിവന്നു. മഹാപുരോഹിതനു പരിചയമുള്ള മറ്റേ ശിഷ്യൻ തിരികെവന്നു വാതിൽ കാവൽ ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന പെൺകുട്ടിയോടു സംസാരിച്ച് പത്രോസിനെയും ഉള്ളിൽ കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുവന്നു.
while Peter stood outside by the door. Presently the other disciple – the one well-known to the high priest – went out and spoke to the portress, and brought Peter in.
17 അപ്പോൾ ആ വാതിൽകാവൽക്കാരി പത്രോസിനോടു ചോദിച്ചു, “താങ്കൾ ഈ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരിൽ ഒരാൾ അല്ലേ?” “ഞാൻ അല്ല,” അയാൾ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.
So the maidservant said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “No, I am not,” he said.
18 തണുപ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് ദാസന്മാരും ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരും കനൽകൂട്ടി തീകായുകയായിരുന്നു. പത്രോസും തീകാഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് അവരുടെകൂടെ നിന്നു.
The servants and guards were standing around a charcoal fire (which they had made because it was cold), and were warming themselves. Peter, too, was with them, standing and warming himself.
19 ഈ സമയത്ത് മഹാപുരോഹിതൻ യേശുവിന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരെയും ഉപദേശത്തെയുംപറ്റി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ചോദ്യംചെയ്തു.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.
20 “ഞാൻ ലോകത്തോടു പരസ്യമായിട്ടാണ് സംസാരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. എല്ലാ യെഹൂദരും ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂടുന്ന പള്ളികളിലും ദൈവാലയത്തിലും ഞാൻ എപ്പോഴും ഉപദേശിച്ചുപോന്നു; രഹസ്യമായി ഒന്നുംതന്നെ ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല.
“For my part,” answered Jesus, “I have spoken to all the world openly. I always taught in some synagogue, or in the Temple Courts, places where everyone assembles, and I never spoke of anything in secret.
21 എന്നെ എന്തിനു ചോദ്യംചെയ്യുന്നു? എന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ കേട്ടിട്ടുള്ളവരോടു ചോദിക്കുക. ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ളത് അവർക്കറിയാം,” യേശു മറുപടി നൽകി.
Why question me? Question those who have listened to me as to what I have spoken about to them. They must know what I said.”
22 യേശു ഇതു പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അടുത്തുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരിൽ ഒരാൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുഖത്തടിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്, “മഹാപുരോഹിതനോട് ഇങ്ങനെയോ ഉത്തരം പറയുന്നത്?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.
When Jesus said this, one of the guards, who was standing near, gave him a blow with his hand. “Do you answer the high priest like that?” he exclaimed.
23 “ഞാൻ തെറ്റായിട്ടാണ് സംസാരിച്ചതെങ്കിൽ അതു തെളിയിക്കുക; ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞതു സത്യമെങ്കിൽ പിന്നെ നിങ്ങൾ എന്നെ അടിച്ചതെന്തിന്?” എന്ന് യേശു ചോദിച്ചു.
“If I said anything wrong, give evidence about it,” replied Jesus, “but if not, why do you strike me?”
24 പിന്നീട് ഹന്നാവ് യേശുവിനെ ബന്ധിതനായിത്തന്നെ മഹാപുരോഹിതനായ കയ്യഫാവിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്ക് അയച്ചു.
Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25 ശിമോൻ പത്രോസ് അപ്പോഴും തീകാഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു നിൽക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ ചിലർ, “നിങ്ങൾ അയാളുടെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരിൽ ഒരുവനല്ലേ?” എന്നു ചിലർ അയാളോടു ചോദിച്ചു. “ഞാൻ അല്ല,” അയാൾ പിന്നെയും നിഷേധിച്ചു.
Meanwhile Simon Peter was standing there, warming himself; so they said to him, “Aren’t you also one of his disciples?” Peter denied it. “No, I am not,” he said.
26 മഹാപുരോഹിതന്റെ ദാസന്മാരിൽ ഒരാളും പത്രോസ് കാത് അറത്തവന്റെ ബന്ധുവുമായ ഒരാൾ പത്രോസിനോട്, “ഞാൻ നിങ്ങളെ അയാളുടെകൂടെ തോട്ടത്തിൽവെച്ചു കണ്ടല്ലോ?” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
One of the high priest’s servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, exclaimed, “Didn’t I myself see you with him in the garden?”
27 പത്രോസ് പിന്നെയും അതു നിഷേധിച്ചു; അപ്പോൾത്തന്നെ കോഴി കൂവി.
Peter again denied it; and at that moment a cock crowed.
28 അതിരാവിലെതന്നെ യെഹൂദനേതാക്കന്മാർ യേശുവിനെ കയ്യഫാവിന്റെ അടുക്കൽനിന്ന് റോമൻ ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ ആസ്ഥാനത്തേക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോയി. തങ്ങൾക്കു പെസഹ ഭക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടിയിരുന്നതിനാൽ ആചാരപരമായ അശുദ്ധി ഒഴിവാക്കാൻ അവർ അരമനയിലേക്കു കടന്നില്ല.
From Caiaphas they took Jesus to the Government house. It was early in the morning. But they did not enter the Government house themselves, otherwise they might become defiled, and so be unable to eat the Passover.
29 അതിനാൽ പീലാത്തോസ് പുറത്തേക്കു വന്ന് അവരോട്, “ഈ മനുഷ്യന്റെമേൽ നിങ്ങൾ ആരോപിക്കുന്ന കുറ്റം എന്ത്?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.
Therefore Pilate came outside to speak to them. “What charge do you bring against this man?” he asked.
30 “കുറ്റവാളി അല്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഞങ്ങൾ ഇയാളെ അങ്ങയുടെപക്കൽ ഏൽപ്പിക്കുകയില്ലായിരുന്നു.” അവർ ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.
“If he had not been a criminal, we should not have given him up to you,” they answered.
31 അതിനു പീലാത്തോസ്, “നിങ്ങൾതന്നെ അയാളെ കൊണ്ടുപോയി നിങ്ങളുടെ ന്യായപ്രമാണം അനുസരിച്ചു ന്യായവിധിനടത്തുക” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. “മരണശിക്ഷ നൽകാനുള്ള അധികാരം ഞങ്ങൾക്കില്ലല്ലോ!” അവർ പറഞ്ഞു.
“Take him yourselves,” said Pilate, “and try him by your own Law.” “We have no power to put anyone to death,” the authorities replied –
32 താൻ മരിക്കുന്നത് ഏതുവിധത്തിലായിരിക്കും എന്ന് യേശു മുൻകൂട്ടി അരുളിച്ചെയ്ത വാക്കുകൾ നിറവേറുന്നതിന് ഇതു സംഭവിച്ചു.
in fulfillment of what Jesus had said when indicating the death that he was destined to die.
33 പീലാത്തോസ് അരമനയ്ക്കുള്ളിലേക്കു തിരികെപ്പോയി, യേശുവിനെ വിളിപ്പിച്ച് അദ്ദേഹത്തോട്, “നീയാണോ യെഹൂദരുടെ രാജാവ്?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.
After that, Pilate went into the Government house again, and calling Jesus up, asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 “ഇത് താങ്കളുടെതന്നെ ചോദ്യമോ? അതോ മറ്റുള്ളവർ താങ്കളെക്കൊണ്ട് ചോദിപ്പിച്ചതോ?” യേശു മറുചോദ്യം ചോദിച്ചു.
“Do you ask me that yourself?” replied Jesus, “or did others say it to you about me?”
35 “ഞാൻ ഒരു യെഹൂദനോ?” പീലാത്തോസ് ചോദിച്ചു. “നിന്റെ ജനങ്ങളും പുരോഹിതമുഖ്യന്മാരുമാണ് നിന്നെ എന്റെപക്കൽ ഏൽപ്പിച്ചത്. നീ എന്തു കുറ്റമാണു ചെയ്തത്?”
“Do you take me for a Jew?” was Pilate’s answer. “It is your own nation and the chief priests who have given you up to me. What have you done?”
36 അതിനുത്തരമായി യേശു പറഞ്ഞു, “എന്റെ രാജ്യം ഈ ലോകത്തിൽനിന്നുള്ളതല്ല. എന്റെ രാജ്യം ഈ ലോകത്തിൽനിന്ന് ഉള്ളതായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ യെഹൂദനേതാക്കന്മാർ എന്നെ പിടിക്കാതിരിക്കാൻ എന്റെ സൈന്യം പോരാടുമായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഇപ്പോൾ എന്റെ രാജ്യം ഈ ലോകത്തിൽനിന്നുള്ളതേ അല്ല.”
“My kingly power,” replied Jesus, “is not due to this world. If it had been so, my servants would be doing their utmost to prevent my being given up to the authorities; but my kingly power is not from the world.”
37 “അപ്പോൾ നീ ഒരു രാജാവുതന്നെയോ?” പീലാത്തോസ് ചോദിച്ചു. “ഞാൻ ഒരു ‘രാജാവ് ആകുന്നു’ എന്ന് താങ്കളാണു പറയുന്നത്. വാസ്തവത്തിൽ, സത്യത്തിനു സാക്ഷ്യംവഹിക്കാനാണു ഞാൻ ജനിച്ചതും ലോകത്തിലേക്കു വന്നതും. സത്യത്തിന്റെ പക്ഷത്തുള്ളവർ എന്റെ വാക്കു കേൾക്കുന്നു,” യേശു മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.
“So you are a king after all!” exclaimed Pilate. “Yes, it is true I am a king,” answered Jesus. “I was born for this, I have come into the world for this – to bear testimony to the truth. Everyone who is on the side of truth listens to my voice.”
38 “എന്താണ് സത്യം?” പീലാത്തോസ് ആരാഞ്ഞു. അതിനുശേഷം അദ്ദേഹം യെഹൂദനേതാക്കന്മാരുടെ അടുത്തുചെന്ന്, “അയാളിൽ കുറ്റംചുമത്താൻ ഞാൻ ഒരു അടിസ്ഥാനവും കാണുന്നില്ല.
“What is truth?” exclaimed Pilate. After saying this, he went out to the crowd again, and said, “For my part, I find nothing with which he can be charged.
39 പെസഹാപ്പെരുന്നാളിൽ ഒരു തടവുകാരനെ സ്വതന്ത്രനാക്കി വിട്ടുതരുന്ന പതിവുണ്ടല്ലോ. ‘യെഹൂദരുടെ രാജാവിനെ’ ഞാൻ മോചിപ്പിച്ചുതരട്ടേ?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.
It is, however, the custom for me to grant you the release of one man at the Passover Festival. Do you wish for the release of the king of the Jews?”
40 “വേണ്ടാ, ഇയാളെ വേണ്ടാ, ബറബ്ബാസിനെ ഞങ്ങൾക്കു മോചിച്ചു തരിക,” എന്ന് അവർ ഉച്ചത്തിൽ ആർത്തുവിളിച്ചു. ബറബ്ബാസ് ഒരു വിപ്ളവകാരി ആയിരുന്നു.
“No, not this man,” they shouted again, “but Barabbas!” This Barabbas was a robber.
