ഉല്പത്തി 38
1 ആ കാലത്ത് യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെവിട്ട് അദുല്ലാമിലുള്ള ഹീരാ എന്നു പേരായ ഒരു മനുഷ്യന്റെ അടുക്കലേക്ക് പോയി അവിടെ താമസമാക്കി.
And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name [was] Hirah.
2 അവിടെവെച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം ശൂവാ എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു കനാന്യന്റെ മകളെ കണ്ടു. യെഹൂദാ അവളെ വിവാഹംചെയ്ത് അവളെ അറിഞ്ഞു.
And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name [was] Shuah; and he took her, and went in to her.
3 അവൾ ഗർഭിണിയായി ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു, ആ മകന് ഏർ എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.
And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er.
4 അവൾ പിന്നെയും ഗർഭംധരിച്ച് ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിക്കുകയും അവന് ഓനാൻ എന്നു പേരിടുകയും ചെയ്തു.
And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan.
5 അവൾ വീണ്ടും ഒരു മകനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു; അവന് ശേലഹ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു. അവൾ അവനെ പ്രസവിച്ചത് കെസീബിൽവെച്ചായിരുന്നു.
And she yet again conceived, and bore a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.
6 യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏരിനു ഭാര്യയായി ഒരുവളെ എടുത്തു; അവളുടെ പേര് താമാർ എന്നായിരുന്നു.
And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, whose name [was] Tamar.
7 എന്നാൽ യെഹൂദയുടെ ആദ്യജാതനായ ഏർ യഹോവയുടെ ദൃഷ്ടിയിൽ ഒരു ദുഷ്ടനായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് യഹോവ അവനെ കൊന്നുകളഞ്ഞു.
And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.
8 അപ്പോൾ യെഹൂദാ ഓനാനോട്, “നീ നിന്റെ സഹോദരന്റെ ഭാര്യയുടെ അടുക്കൽ ചെന്ന്, സഹോദരനുവേണ്ടി സന്തതിയെ ഉളവാക്കാൻ ഭർത്തൃസഹോദരൻ എന്നനിലയ്ക്കുള്ള ധർമം നിറവേറ്റുക” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And Judah said to Onan, Go in to thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
9 എന്നാൽ അങ്ങനെ ജനിക്കുന്ന സന്തതി തന്റേതാകുകയില്ല എന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞിട്ട്, സഹോദരനു സന്തതി ഉണ്ടാകാതിരിക്കാൻ, സഹോദരഭാര്യയോടുകൂടെ കിടക്കപങ്കിട്ടപ്പോഴെല്ലാം ഓനാൻ ബീജം നിലത്തു വീഴ്ത്തിക്കളഞ്ഞു.
And Onan knew that the seed would not be his: and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he frustrated the purpose, lest he should give seed to his brother.
10 അവന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തി യഹോവയുടെ ദൃഷ്ടിയിൽ ദോഷമുള്ളതായിരുന്നു; അതുകൊണ്ട് അവിടന്ന് അവനെയും കൊന്നുകളഞ്ഞു.
And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.
11 യെഹൂദാ പിന്നെ തന്റെ മരുമകളായ താമാറിനോട്, “എന്റെ മകൻ ശേലഹ് പ്രായപൂർത്തിയാകുന്നതുവരെ നീ നിന്റെ അപ്പന്റെ വീട്ടിൽപ്പോയി വിധവയായി ജീവിക്കുക” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. “അവനും ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്മാരെപ്പോലെ മരിച്ചുപോകും” എന്നായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചിന്ത. അങ്ങനെ താമാർ തന്റെ പിതൃഭവനത്തിൽപോയി താമസിച്ചു.
Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son shall be grown; (for he said, Lest perhaps he die also as his brethren [did]: ) and Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.
12 ഏറെ കാലത്തിനുശേഷം യെഹൂദയുടെ ഭാര്യ—ശൂവായുടെ മകൾ—മരിച്ചു. യെഹൂദാ ദുഃഖത്തിൽനിന്ന് മോചിതനായശേഷം തിമ്നയിൽ തന്റെ ആടുകളുടെ രോമം കത്രിക്കുന്നവരുടെ അടുത്തേക്കുപോയി; അദുല്ലാമ്യനും തന്റെ സ്നേഹിതനുമായ ഹീരാ അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം പോയി.
And in process of time, the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died: and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep-shearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13 “തന്റെ അമ്മായിയപ്പൻ ആടുകളുടെ രോമം കത്രിക്കലിനുവേണ്ടി തിമ്നയിലേക്കു പോകുന്നു,” എന്ന് താമാരിന് അറിവുകിട്ടി.
And it was told to Tamar, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnath, to shear his sheep.
14 അവൾ തന്റെ വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രങ്ങൾ മാറ്റി, ആളറിയാതിരിക്കാൻ മൂടുപടംകൊണ്ട് സ്വയം മറച്ചു. അതിനുശേഷം തിമ്നയിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയിൽ എനയീമിന്റെ പ്രവേശനകവാടത്തിൽ ചെന്നിരുന്നു; ഇതിനുകാരണം ശേലഹ് പ്രായമായിട്ടും, തന്നെ അവനു ഭാര്യയായി കൊടുത്തില്ല എന്നതായിരുന്നു.
And she put off from her, her widow's garments, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which [is] by the way to Timnath: for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him for a wife.
15 അവൾ മുഖം മറച്ചിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് യെഹൂദാ അവളെ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ അവൾ ഒരു ഗണിക ആയിരിക്കുമെന്നു കരുതി.
When Judah saw her, he thought her [to be] a harlot; because she had covered her face.
16 അവൾ തന്റെ മരുമകളാണെന്നുള്ളതു തിരിച്ചറിയാതെ അയാൾ വഴിവക്കിൽ അവളുടെ അടുത്തുചെന്ന്, “വരിക, ഞാൻ നിന്റെ അടുക്കൽ വരട്ടെ” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. “എന്റെ അടുക്കൽ വരുന്നതിന് നീ എനിക്ക് എന്തുതരും?” അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു.
And he turned to her by the way, and said, Come, I pray thee, let me have access to thee; (for he knew not that she [was] his daughter-in-law: ) and she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayst have access to me?
17 “എന്റെ ആട്ടിൻപറ്റത്തിൽനിന്ന് ഒരു ആട്ടിൻകുട്ടിയെ ഞാൻ നിനക്കു കൊടുത്തയയ്ക്കാം,” അയാൾ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു. “അതു കൊടുത്തയയ്ക്കുന്നതുവരെ എനിക്ക് എന്തെങ്കിലും പണയമായിത്തരാമോ,” എന്ന് അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു.
And he said, I will send [thee] a kid from the flock: and she said, Wilt thou give [me] a pledge, till thou sendest [it]?
18 അതിന് അയാൾ, “എന്തു പണയമാണു നിനക്കുവേണ്ടത്?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. “താങ്കളുടെ മുദ്രമോതിരവും അതിന്റെ ചരടും താങ്കളുടെ കൈയിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്ന വടിയും,” അവൾ ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു. അയാൾ അതെല്ലാം അവൾക്കുകൊടുത്തു; എന്നിട്ട് അവളോടുകൂടെ കിടക്കപങ്കിട്ടു. അയാൾനിമിത്തം അവൾ ഗർഭംധരിച്ചു.
And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? and she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that [is] in thy hand: and he gave [them to] her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.
19 അതിനുശേഷം അവൾ തന്റെ ഭവനത്തിലേക്ക് പോയി മൂടുപടം നീക്കി വീണ്ടും തന്റെ വൈധവ്യവസ്ത്രം ധരിച്ചു.
And she arose and went her way and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
20 യെഹൂദാ ആ സ്ത്രീയുടെ പക്കൽനിന്ന് തന്റെ പണയം തിരികെ വാങ്ങുന്നതിന് സ്നേഹിതനായ അദുല്ലാമ്യൻവശം ആട്ടിൻകുട്ടിയെ കൊടുത്തയച്ചു; എന്നാൽ അയാൾക്ക് അവളെ കണ്ടെത്താൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.
And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive [his] pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.
21 അവൻ അവിടെ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന ആളുകളോട്, “എനയീമിലേക്കുള്ള വഴിയുടെ അരികിൽ ഇരുന്നിരുന്ന ആ ക്ഷേത്രഗണിക എവിടെയാണ്?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. “ഇവിടെ അങ്ങനെ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രഗണിക ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ലല്ലോ,” അവർ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.
Then he asked the men of that place, saying, where [is] the harlot that [was] openly by the way-side? and they said, There was no harlot in this [place].
22 അവൻ തിരികെച്ചെന്ന് യെഹൂദയോട്, “ഞാൻ അവളെ കണ്ടില്ല. തന്നെയുമല്ല, ‘ഇവിടെ ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രഗണിക ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല’ എന്ന് അവിടെ താമസിക്കുന്നവർ പറയുകയും ചെയ്തു” എന്നറിയിച്ചു.
And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, [that] there was no harlot in this [place].
23 അപ്പോൾ യെഹൂദാ, “അവൾ അത് എടുക്കട്ടെ; അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നമ്മൾ പരിഹാസപാത്രമായിത്തീരും. ഏതായാലും, ഞാൻ ഈ ആട്ടിൻകുട്ടിയെ അവൾക്കു കൊടുത്തയച്ചു, നീ അവളെ കണ്ടെത്തിയതുമില്ല” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And Judah said, Let her take [it] to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.
24 ഏകദേശം മൂന്നുമാസം കഴിഞ്ഞ്, “നിന്റെ മരുമകളായ താമാർ വേശ്യാവൃത്തി നിമിത്തം കുറ്റക്കാരി ആയിരിക്കുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ഫലമായി അവൾ ഇപ്പോൾ ഗർഭിണിയുമാണ്” എന്ന് യെഹൂദയ്ക്ക് അറിവുകിട്ടി. “അവളെ ഇവിടെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നു ജീവനോടെ ദഹിപ്പിക്കുക,” യെഹൂദാ പറഞ്ഞു.
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told to Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and also, behold she [is] with child by lewdness: and Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.
25 അങ്ങനെ അവളെ കൊണ്ടുവരുമ്പോൾ അവൾ തന്റെ അമ്മായിയപ്പന്, “ഈ മുദ്രയും ചരടും വടിയും ആരുടേത് എന്നു തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നോ? ഇവയുടെ ഉടമസ്ഥൻ നിമിത്തമത്രേ ഞാൻ ഗർഭിണിയായിരിക്കുന്നത്” എന്ന് ഒരു സന്ദേശം അയച്ചു.
When she [was] brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man whose these [are], am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose [are] these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.
26 യെഹൂദാ അവയെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ട്, “അവൾ എന്നെക്കാൾ നീതിയുള്ളവൾ; ഞാൻ അവളെ എന്റെ മകൻ ശേലഹിനു കൊടുത്തില്ലല്ലോ” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അയാൾ പിന്നീട് അവളോടുകൂടെ കിടക്കപങ്കിട്ടില്ല.
And Judah acknowledged [them], and said She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son: and he knew her again no more.
27 അവളുടെ പ്രസവസമയം അടുത്തു; ഇരട്ടകളായ ആൺകുട്ടികളാണ് അവളുടെ ഉദരത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്.
And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that behold, twins [were] in her womb.
28 അവൾ പ്രസവിക്കുമ്പോൾ അവരിൽ ഒരുവൻ തന്റെ കൈ പുറത്തേക്കിട്ടു; അപ്പോൾ സൂതികർമിണി ഒരു ചെമന്നചരട് എടുത്ത് അവന്റെ കൈത്തണ്ടയിൽ കെട്ടി, “ഇവൻ ഒന്നാമതു പുറത്തുവന്നു” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു,
And it came to pass when she travailed, that [the one] put out [his] hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.
29 എന്നാൽ അവൻ കൈ അകത്തേക്കു വലിച്ചപ്പോൾ അവന്റെ സഹോദരൻ പുറത്തുവന്നു; “നീ നിനക്കായിത്തന്നെ ഇങ്ങനെയോ വഴിയുണ്ടാക്കിയത്!” അവൾ പറഞ്ഞു. അവന് ഫേരെസ്സ് എന്നു പേരിട്ടു.
And it came to pass as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out; and she said, How hast thou broken forth? [this] breach [be] upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.
30 അതിനുശേഷം, കൈത്തണ്ടയിൽ ചെമന്നനൂലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അവന്റെ സഹോദരൻ പുറത്തുവന്നു; അവന് സേരഹ് എന്ന പേരുനൽകി.
And afterwards came out his brother that had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zarah.
