ആവർത്തനപുസ്തകം 20
1 നിങ്ങൾ ശത്രുക്കൾക്കെതിരേ യുദ്ധംചെയ്യാൻ പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ കുതിരകൾ, രഥങ്ങൾ എന്നിങ്ങനെ നിങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളതിനെക്കാൾ വലിയ സൈന്യത്തെ കണ്ടു ഭയപ്പെടരുത്. കാരണം, ഈജിപ്റ്റിൽനിന്ന് നിങ്ങളെ പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവന്ന നിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിന്നോടുകൂടെ ഉണ്ട്.
When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, and chariots, and a people more than you, be not afraid of them: for the LORD your God is with you, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
2 നിങ്ങൾ യുദ്ധത്തിനു പുറപ്പെടുമ്പോൾ പുരോഹിതൻ മുമ്പോട്ടുവന്ന് സൈന്യത്തോട് ഇപ്രകാരം സംസാരിക്കണം:
And it shall be, when all of you are come nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people,
3 “ഇസ്രായേലേ, കേൾക്കുക, ഇന്നു നിങ്ങൾ ശത്രുവിനോടു യുദ്ധത്തിനു പോകുന്നു. ഹൃദയം തളരുകയോ ഭയപ്പെടുകയോ ചെയ്യരുത്. ഭ്രമിക്കരുത്, അവരുടെമുമ്പിൽ ചഞ്ചലപ്പെടുകയുമരുത്.
And shall say unto them, Hear, O Israel, all of you approach this day unto battle against your enemies: let not your hearts faint, fear not, and do not tremble, neither be all of you terrified because of them;
4 നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിങ്ങളുടെ ശത്രുവിനെതിരേ യുദ്ധംചെയ്ത് നിങ്ങൾക്കു വിജയം നൽകാൻ നിങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം അണിനിരന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.”
For the LORD your God is he that goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.
5 ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാർ സൈന്യത്തോട് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയണം: “ആരെങ്കിലും പുതിയ വീട് പണിതിട്ട് ഗൃഹപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്താത്തവനായിട്ടുണ്ടോ? അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു തിരികെപ്പോകട്ടെ. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിച്ചുപോകുകയും മറ്റൊരുവൻ ഗൃഹപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്യും.
And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is there that has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it.
6 ആരെങ്കിലും മുന്തിരിത്തോപ്പു നട്ടശേഷം അതിന്റെ ഫലം അനുഭവിക്കാത്തവനായിട്ടുണ്ടോ? അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു തിരികെപ്പോകട്ടെ. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിച്ചുപോകുകയും മറ്റൊരുവൻ അതിന്റെ ഫലം അനുഭവിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും.
And what man is he that has planted a vineyard, and has not yet eaten of it? let him also go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man eat of it.
7 ആരെങ്കിലും ഒരു സ്ത്രീക്ക് വിവാഹവാഗ്ദാനം നൽകി അവളെ വിവാഹംകഴിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ? അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോകട്ടെ. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവൻ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ മരിക്കുകയും മറ്റൊരുവൻ അവളെ വിവാഹംകഴിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും.”
And what man is there that has betrothed a wife, and has not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
8 ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാർ വീണ്ടും പറയേണ്ടത്, “ആരെങ്കിലും ഭയപ്പെട്ടോ ഹൃദയം തളർന്നോ ഇരിക്കുന്നവനായിട്ടുണ്ടോ? അവന്റെ സഹപടയാളികളുടെ ഹൃദയം ക്ഷീണിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കേണ്ടതിന് അവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്കു തിരികെപ്പോകട്ടെ.”
And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is there that is fearful and fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren's heart faint as well as his heart.
9 ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാർ സൈന്യത്തോടു സംസാരിച്ചശേഷം അവരുടെമേൽ സൈന്യാധിപന്മാരെ നിയമിക്കണം.
And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people that they shall make captains of the armies to lead the people.
10 നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു നഗരം ആക്രമിക്കാൻ ചെല്ലുമ്പോൾ അവിടത്തെ ജനങ്ങൾക്ക് ആദ്യം സമാധാനം വാഗ്ദാനം നൽകണം.
When you come nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.
11 അവർ നിങ്ങളുടെ നിബന്ധനകൾ അംഗീകരിച്ച് വാതിൽ തുറന്നാൽ അവിടെയുള്ള ജനം എല്ലാം നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അടിമകളായി നിങ്ങൾക്കുവേണ്ടി ജോലി ചെയ്യണം.
And it shall be, if it make you answer of peace, and open unto you, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto you, and they shall serve you.
12 എന്നാൽ അവർ സമാധാനം നിരസിച്ച് നിങ്ങളോടു യുദ്ധത്തിന് ഒരുങ്ങിയാൽ നിങ്ങൾ ആ പട്ടണത്തെ ഉപരോധിക്കണം.
And if it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it:
13 നിന്റെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ അതു നിന്റെ കൈയിൽ ഏൽപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ അതിലുള്ള സകലപുരുഷന്മാരെയും വാൾകൊണ്ടു കൊല്ലണം.
And when the LORD your God has delivered it into your hands, you shall strike every male thereof with the edge of the sword:
14 എന്നാൽ സ്ത്രീകളെയും കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെയും കന്നുകാലികളെയും പട്ടണത്തിലുള്ളതൊക്കെയും നിങ്ങൾക്കു കൊള്ളയായി എടുക്കാം. നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിങ്ങളുടെ ശത്രുക്കളിൽനിന്ന് നൽകിയ കൊള്ളവസ്തുക്കൾ നിങ്ങൾക്കനുഭവിക്കാം.
But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shall you take unto yourself; and you shall eat the spoil of your enemies, which the LORD your God has given you.
15 നിങ്ങൾക്കു സമീപമുള്ള ഈ ജനതകളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടാത്ത എല്ലാ വിദൂരനഗരങ്ങളോടും ഇങ്ങനെതന്നെയാണ് നിങ്ങൾ പ്രവർത്തിക്കേണ്ടത്.
Thus shall you do unto all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations.
16 നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ നിങ്ങൾക്ക് അവകാശമായി നൽകുന്ന നഗരങ്ങളിലെ ശ്വാസമുള്ള യാതൊന്നിനെയും ജീവനോടെ ശേഷിപ്പിക്കരുത്.
But of the cities of these people, which the LORD your God does give you for an inheritance, you shall keep alive nothing that breathes:
17 ഹിത്യർ, അമോര്യർ, കനാന്യർ, പെരിസ്യർ, ഹിവ്യർ, യെബൂസ്യർ എന്നിവരെ നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവ കൽപ്പിച്ചതുപോലെ പൂർണമായി സംഹരിക്കണം.
But you shall utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD your God has commanded you:
18 അല്ലാത്തപക്ഷം അവർ തങ്ങളുടെ ദേവാരാധനയിൽ ചെയ്യുന്ന മ്ലേച്ഛതകൾ പിൻതുടരാൻ നിങ്ങളെ പഠിപ്പിക്കും; നിങ്ങൾ നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവയ്ക്കു വിരോധമായി പാപം ചെയ്യാനിടയാകും.
That they teach you not to do after all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods; so should all of you sin against the LORD your God.
19 ഒരു നഗരം പിടിച്ചെടുക്കേണ്ടതിന് അതിനെതിരേ നിങ്ങൾക്കു യുദ്ധംചെയ്ത് ദീർഘകാലം ഉപരോധിക്കേണ്ടിവന്നാൽ അതിലുള്ള വൃക്ഷങ്ങൾ കോടാലികൊണ്ടു നശിപ്പിക്കരുത്. അവയുടെ ഫലം നിങ്ങൾക്കു ഭക്ഷിക്കാവുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് അതു വെട്ടിക്കളയരുത്. നീ അവയെ ഉപരോധിക്കാൻ ആ നിലത്തിലെ മരങ്ങൾ മനുഷ്യരാണോ?
When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for you may eat of them, and you shall not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man's life) to employ them in the siege:
20 എന്നാൽ ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമല്ലാത്ത ഫലങ്ങളുള്ള വൃക്ഷങ്ങൾമാത്രം വെട്ടിക്കളയുക. നിന്നോടു യുദ്ധംചെയ്യുന്ന നഗരം കീഴടങ്ങുംവരെ അവ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് നിനക്കു കൊത്തളങ്ങൾ നിർമിക്കാം.
Only the trees which you know that they be not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down; and you shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it be subdued.
