1 ആ കാലത്ത് ശിഷ്യരുടെ എണ്ണം വർധിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോൾ, വിധവകൾക്കുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള പ്രതിദിന ഭക്ഷണവിതരണത്തിൽ എബ്രായഭാഷികളായ യെഹൂദന്മാർ ഗ്രീക്കുഭാഷികളായ യെഹൂദവിധവകളെ അവഗണിക്കുന്നതായി പരാതിയുയർന്നു.

And in these days, the disciples multiplying, there came a murmuring of the Hellenists at the Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily ministry,

2 അതിനാൽ, പന്ത്രണ്ട് അപ്പൊസ്തലന്മാർ ശിഷ്യരുടെ സമൂഹത്തെയെല്ലാം വിളിച്ചുകൂട്ടി ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞു: “സഹോദരങ്ങളേ, ഞങ്ങൾ ദൈവവചനം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് അവഗണിച്ച് ഭക്ഷണവിതരണത്തിൽ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുന്നത് അഭികാമ്യമല്ല.

and the Twelve, having called near the multitude of the disciples, said, “It is not pleasing that we, having left the word of God, minister at tables;

3 ആത്മാവിനാലും ജ്ഞാനത്താലും നിറഞ്ഞവരും നിങ്ങളുടെ മധ്യത്തിൽ നല്ല സാക്ഷ്യം ഉള്ളവരുമായ ഏഴുപേരെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുക. ഭക്ഷണവിതരണത്തിന്റെ ചുമതല നമുക്ക് അവരെ ഏൽപ്പിക്കാം.

look out, therefore, brothers, seven men of you who are testified well of, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may set over this necessity,

4 ഞങ്ങളോ പ്രാർഥനയിലും ദൈവവചനം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിലും ശ്രദ്ധചെലുത്താം.”

and we to prayer, and to the ministry of the word, will give ourselves continually.”

5 ഈ നിർദേശം വിശ്വാസസമൂഹത്തിൽ എല്ലാവർക്കും ഇഷ്ടമായി. വിശ്വാസത്താലും പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനാലും നിറഞ്ഞവനായ സ്തെഫാനൊസിനെയും ഫിലിപ്പൊസ്, പ്രൊഖൊരോസ്, നിക്കാനോർ, തിമോൻ, പർമെനാസ്, യെഹൂദാമതത്തിൽ ചേർന്ന അന്ത്യോക്യക്കാരനായ നിക്കോലാവൊസ് എന്നിവരെയും അവർ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു.

And the thing was pleasing before all the multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch,

6 അവരെ അപ്പൊസ്തലന്മാരുടെമുമ്പിൽ നിർത്തി; അപ്പൊസ്തലന്മാർ പ്രാർഥിച്ച് അവരുടെമേൽ കൈവെക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

whom they set before the apostles, and they, having prayed, laid [their] hands on them.

7 ദൈവവചനം വ്യാപിച്ചുകൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു. ജെറുശലേമിൽ ശിഷ്യരുടെ എണ്ണം വളരെ വർധിച്ചു. പുരോഹിതന്മാരിലും വളരെപ്പേർ ഈ വിശ്വാസം അംഗീകരിച്ചു.

And the word of God increased, and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem exceedingly; a great multitude of the priests were also obedient to the faith.

8 ദൈവകൃപയും ശക്തിയും നിറഞ്ഞവനായ സ്തെഫാനൊസ് ജനമധ്യത്തിൽ വലിയ അത്ഭുതങ്ങളും ചിഹ്നങ്ങളും പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു.

And Stephen, full of faith and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people,

9 കുറേന, അലക്സാന്ത്രിയ എന്നീ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽനിന്നും കിലിക്യ, ഏഷ്യ എന്നീ പ്രവിശ്യകളിൽനിന്നുമുള്ള “സ്വതന്ത്രർ,” എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന യെഹൂദവിഭാഗത്തിലുള്ളവർ സ്തെഫാനൊസിനെതിരായി വാദപ്രതിവാദം ചെയ്യാൻ ആരംഭിച്ചു.

and there arose certain of those of the synagogue, the [one] called Libertines (and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia, and Asia), disputing with Stephen,

10 എന്നാൽ, ദൈവാത്മാവു നൽകിയ വിവേകത്തോടുകൂടിയ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വാക്കുകൾക്ക് എതിർവാദം നിരത്താൻ അവർക്കു സാധിച്ചില്ല.

and they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking;

11 അപ്പോൾ അവർ, “മോശയെയും ദൈവത്തെയും സ്തെഫാനൊസ് ദുഷിച്ചു സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് ഞങ്ങൾ കേട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു” എന്നു പറയാൻ ചിലരെ രഹസ്യമായി പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചു.

then they suborned men, saying, “We have heard him speaking slanderous sayings in regard to Moses and God.”

12 അങ്ങനെ അവർ ജനങ്ങളെയും സമുദായനേതാക്കന്മാരെയും വേദജ്ഞരെയും ഇളക്കി. അവർ സ്തെഫാനൊസിനെ പിടികൂടി ന്യായാധിപസമിതിക്കുമുമ്പിൽ ഹാജരാക്കി.

They also stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and having come on [him], they caught him, and brought [him] to the Sanhedrin;

13 അവർ കള്ളസ്സാക്ഷികളെ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് ഇപ്രകാരം പറയിച്ചു: “ഈ മനുഷ്യൻ വിശുദ്ധസ്ഥലത്തിനും ന്യായപ്രമാണത്തിനും വിരോധമായി സംസാരിക്കുന്നതിന് അവസാനമില്ല.

they also set up false witnesses, saying, “This one does not cease to speak evil sayings against this holy place and the Law,

14 നസറായനായ യേശു ഈ സ്ഥലം നശിപ്പിക്കുമെന്നും മോശ നമുക്കു നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്ന ആചാരങ്ങൾ നീക്കിക്കളയുമെന്നും ഇയാൾ പറയുന്നതു ഞങ്ങൾ കേട്ടു.”

for we have heard him saying that this Jesus the Nazarean will overthrow this place, and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us”;

15 ന്യായാധിപസമിതിയിൽ ഇരുന്ന എല്ലാവരും സ്തെഫാനൊസിനെ ഉറ്റുനോക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുഖം ഒരു ദൈവദൂതന്റേതുപോലെ തേജസ്സുള്ളതായി കാണപ്പെട്ടു.

and gazing at him, all those sitting in the Sanhedrin saw his face as it were the face of a messenger.
