1 “സഹോദരന്മാരേ, പിതാക്കന്മാരേ, എന്റെ പ്രതിവാദം കേൾക്കുക.”
Men, brethren, and fathers, hear now my apology unto you.
2 പൗലോസ് എബ്രായരുടെ ഭാഷയിൽ അവരെ അഭിസംബോധന ചെയ്തതു കേട്ടപ്പോൾ ജനം വളരെ ശാന്തരായി. അദ്ദേഹം ഇങ്ങനെ തുടർന്നു:
And hearing that he was speaking to them in the Hebrew tongue, they kept silent the more.
3 “കിലിക്യാപ്രവിശ്യയിൽ തർസൊസിൽ ജനിച്ച ഒരു യെഹൂദനാണു ഞാൻ. എന്നാൽ, വളർന്നത് ഈ നഗരത്തിലാണ്. ഗമാലിയേലിന്റെ കീഴിൽ നമ്മുടെ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ ന്യായപ്രമാണം സംബന്ധിച്ച് എനിക്ക് സമഗ്രമായ ശിക്ഷണം ലഭിച്ചു. ഇന്നു നിങ്ങളിൽ ഏതൊരാളും ആയിരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെതന്നെ ഞാനും ദൈവത്തിനുവേണ്ടി വളരെ തീക്ഷ്ണതയുള്ളവനായിരുന്നു.
And he says, I am Jewish man, having been born in Tarsus of Cilicia, having been brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the accuracy of patristic law, being a zealot of God, as you all are this day;
4 ക്രിസ്തുമാർഗത്തെ നശിപ്പിച്ച് ഇല്ലാതെയാക്കാനായി ഞാൻ സ്ത്രീപുരുഷവ്യത്യാസംകൂടാതെ എല്ലാവരെയും പിടികൂടി കാരാഗൃഹത്തിലടയ്ക്കുകയും അവർ മരിച്ചാലും സാരമില്ല എന്ന മനോഭാവത്തോടെ പീഡിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
who after this way persecuted unto death, binding and committing to prison both men and women;
5 ഇതിനെല്ലാം മഹാപുരോഹിതനും ന്യായാധിപസമിതിയിലെ എല്ലാവരും സാക്ഷികളാണ്. ദമസ്കോസിലുള്ള അവരുടെ സഹോദരന്മാരുടെപേർക്ക് അവരിൽനിന്ന് അധികാരപത്രങ്ങളും വാങ്ങി, അവിടെനിന്ന് ഈ മാർഗക്കാരെ തടവുകാരാക്കി ജെറുശലേമിൽ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് ശിക്ഷിക്കാനായി ഞാൻ അവിടേക്കുപോയി.
as the high priest also, and all the eldership, witnessed me: from whom having also received letters from the brethren in Damascus, I was on my way, being about to lead them also hither into Jerusalem bound, that they might be punished.
6 “അങ്ങനെ യാത്രചെയ്തു ദമസ്കോസ് പട്ടണത്തിനടുത്തെത്തിയപ്പോൾ, ഏകദേശം നട്ടുച്ചനേരത്ത് ആകാശത്തുനിന്ന് അത്യുജ്ജ്വലമായ ഒരു പ്രകാശം പെട്ടെന്ന് എന്റെ ചുറ്റും മിന്നി.
And it came to pass, while I was journeying, and nigh unto Damascus, a great light, about midday, suddenly shone from heaven around me;
7 ഞാൻ നിലത്തുവീണു. ‘ശൗലേ, ശൗലേ, നീ എന്നെ പീഡിപ്പിക്കുന്നതെന്തിന്?’ എന്ന് എന്നോടു ചോദിക്കുന്ന ഒരു അശരീരി ഞാൻ കേട്ടു.
and I felt upon the ground, and heard a voice, saying to me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
8 “‘അങ്ങ് ആരാകുന്നു കർത്താവേ?’ എന്നു ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചു. “‘നീ ഉപദ്രവിക്കുന്ന നസറായനായ യേശുവാണു ഞാൻ’ അവിടന്ന് ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു.
And I responded, Who art thou, Lord? And He said to me, I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom thou art persecuting.
9 എന്റെ കൂടെയുള്ളവർ പ്രകാശം കണ്ടുവെങ്കിലും എന്നോടു സംസാരിച്ചയാളിന്റെ ശബ്ദം കേട്ടില്ല.
And those being along with me saw the light indeed, but heard not the voice of the one speaking to me.
10 “‘കർത്താവേ, ഞാൻ എന്തു ചെയ്യണം’ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. “അതിനു കർത്താവ് എന്നോട്, ‘എഴുന്നേറ്റു ദമസ്കോസിലേക്കു പോകുക, നീ ചെയ്യേണ്ടതെല്ലാം അവിടെവെച്ചു നിന്നോടു പറയും’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said to me, Rising up, go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee concerning all things which have been ordained for thee to do.
11 ആ പ്രകാശത്തിന്റെ തേജസ്സ് എനിക്ക് അന്ധത വരുത്തിയിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് എന്റെ സഹയാത്രികർ എന്നെ കൈക്കുപിടിച്ചു ദമസ്കോസിലേക്കു നടത്തി.
And when I did not see on account of the glory of that light, and being led by the hand by those journeying with me, I came into Damascus.
12 “അനന്യാസ് എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരാൾ എന്നെ കാണാനെത്തി. അദ്ദേഹം ഭക്തിയോടെ ന്യായപ്രമാണം പാലിക്കുന്നവനും ആ സ്ഥലത്തു താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന എല്ലാ യെഹൂദരാലും ആദരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നവനുമായിരുന്നു.
And a certain Ananias, a man godly according to the law, and of good report by all the Jews dwelling there,
13 അദ്ദേഹം എന്റെ അടുക്കൽനിന്നുകൊണ്ട്, ‘ശൗലേ, സഹോദരാ, കാഴ്ച പ്രാപിക്കുക’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ഉടൻതന്നെ എനിക്കു കാഴ്ച ലഭിച്ചു; അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കാണാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു.
having come to me, and standing over me, said, Brother Saul, look up. And I at that hour looked up unto him.
14 “പിന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം എന്നോട് ഇപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞു: ‘നമ്മുടെ പൂർവികരുടെ ദൈവം, അവിടത്തെ ഇഷ്ടം അറിയാനും നീതിമാനായവനെ ദർശിക്കാനും തിരുവായിൽനിന്നുള്ള വചനങ്ങൾ കേൾക്കാനും നിന്നെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee to know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice from His mouth;
15 നീ കാണുകയും കേൾക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ച്, നീ സകലമനുഷ്യർക്കും മുമ്പാകെ അവിടത്തെ സാക്ഷിയായിത്തീരും.
because thou shalt be a witness for Him to all men of those things which thou hast seen and heard.
16 ഇനി താമസിക്കുന്നതെന്തിന്? എഴുന്നേറ്റ് സ്നാനമേൽക്കുക. തിരുനാമം വിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിച്ച്, നിന്റെ പാപങ്ങൾ കഴുകിക്കളയുക.’
And now why tarriest thou? arising, be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on His name.
17 “ഞാൻ ജെറുശലേമിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തി ദൈവാലയത്തിൽ പ്രാർഥിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ആത്മവിവശതയിലായി; എന്നോടു സംസാരിക്കുന്ന കർത്താവിനെ ഞാൻ കണ്ടു.
And it happened unto me, having returned into Jerusalem, and while I was praying in the temple, I was in an ecstasy;
18 അവിടന്ന് എന്നോട്: ‘നീ ഉടൻതന്നെ ജെറുശലേം വിട്ടുപോകുക; എന്നെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള നിന്റെ സാക്ഷ്യം അവർ അംഗീകരിക്കുകയില്ല’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
and I saw Him speaking to me, Hasten, and depart quickly out of Jerusalem, because they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
19 “അതിനു ഞാൻ, ‘കർത്താവേ, ഞാൻ യെഹൂദപ്പള്ളികൾതോറും ചെന്ന്, അങ്ങയിൽ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവരെ തടവിലാക്കുകയും അടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്ന് ഇവർക്കു നന്നായി അറിയാം.
And I said, Lord, they know that I was imprisoning and binding those believing on thee throughout the synagogue;
20 അങ്ങേക്കുവേണ്ടി രക്തസാക്ഷിയായ സ്തെഫാനൊസിന്റെ രക്തം ചൊരിയുന്ന സമയത്ത്, ഞാൻ അതിന് അനുമതി നൽകിക്കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കല്ലെറിയുന്നവരുടെ വസ്ത്രം സൂക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അവിടെ നിൽക്കുകയായിരുന്നു’ എന്നു മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.
and when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I was standing by, and consenting, and keeping the garments of those killing him.
21 “കർത്താവ് എന്നോട്, ‘നീ പോകുക, ഞാൻ നിന്നെ ദൂരെ യെഹൂദേതരരുടെ അടുത്തേക്കയയ്ക്കും’ എന്ന് അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു.”
And He said to me, Go: because I will send thee far away to the Gentiles.
22 ഇതു പറയുന്നതുവരെ ജനക്കൂട്ടം പൗലോസിന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പിന്നെ, അവർ അത്യുച്ചത്തിൽ, “ഇവനെ ഭൂമിയിൽനിന്നു നീക്കിക്കളയുക, ഇവൻ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കാൻ യോഗ്യനല്ല” എന്നു വിളിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞു.
And they continued to hear him until this word, and lifted up their voice, saying, Take away such a one from the earth: for it is not appropriate for him to live.
23 അവർ ഒച്ചപ്പാടുണ്ടാക്കുകയും പുറങ്കുപ്പായം ഊരി എറിഞ്ഞുകളയുകയും പൂഴി വാരി മേൽപ്പോട്ടെറിയുകയും ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നതിനിടയിൽ,
And they crying out, and rending their garments, and throwing dust into the air,
24 സൈന്യാധിപൻ പൗലോസിനെ സൈനികത്താവളത്തിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോകാൻ ആജ്ഞാപിച്ചു. ജനങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനെതിരേ എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഇങ്ങനെ വിളിച്ചുകൂവുന്നു എന്നു കണ്ടുപിടിക്കുന്നതിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ചമ്മട്ടികൊണ്ടടിച്ച് ചോദ്യംചെയ്യാൻ സൈന്യാധിപൻ ഉത്തരവിട്ടു.
the chiliarch commanded that he should be led into the castle, saying that he should be tested by scourges, in order that he might know on account of what cause they continued so to cry out against him.
25 സൈനികർ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അടിക്കാൻ പിടിച്ചുകെട്ടുമ്പോൾ, പൗലോസ് അടുത്തുനിന്നിരുന്ന ശതാധിപനോട്, “ഒരു റോമൻ പൗരനെ, കുറ്റവാളിയെന്നു തെളിയിക്കാതെ, അടിക്കുന്നതു നിയമാനുസൃതമോ?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.
And when they were extending him to the scourges, Paul said to the centurion standing by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?
26 ശതാധിപൻ ഇതു കേട്ടിട്ട് സൈന്യാധിപന്റെ അടുക്കൽ ചെന്നു വിവരം ധരിപ്പിച്ചു. “അങ്ങെന്താണ് ഈ ചെയ്യാൻപോകുന്നത്? ഇയാൾ ഒരു റോമൻ പൗരനാണ്,” ശതാധിപൻ സൈന്യാധിപനോടു പറഞ്ഞു.
And the centurion hearing, having come to the chiliarch, announced to him, saying, What are you about to do? for this man is a Roman.
27 സൈന്യാധിപൻ പൗലോസിന്റെ അടുത്തെത്തി ചോദിച്ചു, “പറയൂ, താങ്കൾ ഒരു റോമൻ പൗരനോ?” “അതേ, ഞാൻ റോമൻ പൗരനാണ്,” പൗലോസ് മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.
And the chiliarch, having come to him, said; Tell me, are you a Roman? And he said, Yes.
28 “ഞാൻ ഈ പൗരത്വം സമ്പാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് വലിയൊരു വിലകൊടുത്തിട്ടാണ്,” സൈന്യാധിപൻ പറഞ്ഞു. അതിനു മറുപടിയായി പൗലോസ് പറഞ്ഞു, “എന്നാൽ ഞാനോ, ഒരു റോമൻ പൗരനായി ജനിച്ചവനാണ്.”
And the chiliarch responded, With a great sum obtained I this citizenship. And Paul said, But I was indeed born (a Roman citizen).
29 അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ചോദ്യംചെയ്യാൻ ഭാവിച്ചവർ ഉടൻതന്നെ പിൻവാങ്ങി. പൗലോസ് എന്ന റോമൻ പൗരനെയാണ് താൻ ചങ്ങലകളാൽ ബന്ധിച്ചതെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ സൈന്യാധിപൻ പരിഭ്രാന്തനായിത്തീർന്നു.
Then immediately those about to scourge him departed from him: and the chiliarch also feared, knowing that he was a Roman, and that he had bound him.
30 യെഹൂദർ പൗലോസിന്റെമേൽ ചുമത്തുന്ന കുറ്റത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു സൂക്ഷ്മമായി മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട്, സൈന്യാധിപൻ പിറ്റേന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സ്വതന്ത്രനാക്കിയശേഷം പുരോഹിതമുഖ്യന്മാരും ന്യായാധിപസമിതിയും കൂടിവരാൻ ആജ്ഞാപിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് അയാൾ പൗലോസിനെ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന് അവരുടെമുമ്പിൽ നിർത്തി.
And on the following day, wishing to know the certainty as to what he is accused of by the Jews, he loosed him, and commanded the chief priests and all the sanhedrin to come together, and leading down Paul, he placed him in their midst.
