1 പൗലോസും ശീലാസും അംഫിപ്പൊലിസ് അപ്പൊലോന്യ എന്നീ പട്ടണങ്ങളിൽക്കൂടി യാത്രചെയ്ത് തെസ്സലോനിക്യയിലെത്തി; അവിടെ യെഹൂദരുടെ ഒരു പള്ളി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
And taking their journey through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica; where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
2 പൗലോസ് തന്റെ പതിവനുസരിച്ച് അവിടെപ്പോയി. മൂന്നു ശബ്ബത്തുകളിൽ തിരുവെഴുത്തുകളെ ആധാരമാക്കി അവിടെയുള്ളവരുമായി സംവാദത്തിലേർപ്പെട്ടു;
And according to Paul's custom, he entered in among them, and discoursed to them for three Sabbaths from the scriptures;
3 ക്രിസ്തു കഷ്ടമനുഭവിച്ചശേഷം മരിച്ചവരിൽനിന്ന് ഉയിർത്തെഴുന്നേൽക്കേണ്ടത് ആവശ്യമായിരുന്നുവെന്നും “ഞാൻ നിങ്ങളോടു പ്രസംഗിക്കുന്ന ഈ യേശുതന്നെയാണ് ക്രിസ്തു,” എന്നും അദ്ദേഹം അവർക്കു വിശദീകരിക്കുകയും സമർഥിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
opening them, and evidently showing that the Messiah ought to suffer, and to rise from the dead; and that this is the Messiah, even Jesus, whom I declare to you.
4 അവരിൽ ചിലർക്കും ദൈവഭക്തിയുള്ള അനേകം ഗ്രീക്കുകാർക്കും മാന്യസ്ത്രീകളിൽ പലർക്കും ഇതു ബോധ്യമായി. അവർ പൗലോസിനോടും ശീലാസിനോടും ചേർന്നു.
And some of them believed, and adhered to Paul and Silas; besides, a considerable number of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the principal women.
5 എന്നാൽ, ചില യെഹൂദർ അസൂയാലുക്കളായിത്തീർന്നു; അവർ ചന്തസ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽനിന്ന് കുറെ ഗുണ്ടകളെ ഒരുമിച്ചുകൂട്ടി പട്ടണത്തിൽ ഒരു ലഹള ഉണ്ടാക്കിച്ചു. പൗലോസിനെയും ശീലാസിനെയും കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചു ജനമധ്യത്തിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നതിനായി അവർ യാസോന്റെ വീട് വളഞ്ഞു.
But the unbelieving Jews, filled with zeal, gathered together some mean and profligate fellows, and making a mob, threw the city into a tumult; and assaulting the house of Jason, endeavored to bring them out to the people.
6 എന്നാൽ, അവരെ കണ്ടെത്താൻകഴിയാതെവന്നപ്പോൾ അവർ യാസോനെയും മറ്റുചില സഹോദരന്മാരെയും നഗരാധികാരികളുടെ മുന്നിലേക്കു വലിച്ചിഴച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവന്നു. “ഭൂലോകത്തെ കീഴ്‌മേൽ മറിച്ചവർ ഇതാ ഇവിടെയും എത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു;
But not finding them, they dragged Jason, and some of the brethren to the magistrates of the city, crying out, These men, that have turned the world upside down, are come hither, also;
7 യാസോൻ അവരെ സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. യേശു എന്നു പേരുള്ള മറ്റൊരു രാജാവുണ്ടെന്നു പറഞ്ഞ് ഇവരെല്ലാവരും കൈസറുടെ ഉത്തരവുകളെ ധിക്കരിക്കുന്നു,” അവർ വിളിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞു.
and Jason has privately received them. And all these men act contrary to the decrees of Cesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.
8 ഇതു കേട്ട് ജനക്കൂട്ടവും നഗരാധികാരികളും അസ്വസ്ഥരായി.
And they alarmed the multitude and the magistrates of the city, when they heard these things.
9 എങ്കിലും ജാമ്യത്തുക കെട്ടിവെപ്പിച്ചിട്ട് യാസോനെയും മറ്റുള്ളവരെയും മോചിപ്പിച്ചു.
And having taken security of Jason, and the rest, they dismissed them.
10 രാത്രിയായ ഉടനെ സഹോദരങ്ങൾ പൗലോസിനെയും ശീലാസിനെയും ബെരോവയിലേക്കു യാത്രയാക്കി. അവിടെ എത്തിയശേഷം അവർ യെഹൂദരുടെ പള്ളിയിൽ ചെന്നു.
But the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas, by night, to Berea: and when they came thither, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 ബെരോവക്കാർ തെസ്സലോനിക്യയിലുള്ളവരെക്കാൾ വൈശിഷ്ട്യമുള്ളവരായിരുന്നു; അവർ വളരെ താത്പര്യത്തോടെ വചനം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും അതു ശരിയാണോ എന്നറിയാൻ ദിനംപ്രതി തിരുവെഴുത്തുകൾ പരിശോധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുപോന്നു.
Now these were of a more noble disposition that those of Thessalonica: for they received the word with all readiness of mind, daily examining the scriptures, whether those things were so.
12 യെഹൂദരിൽ അനേകരും അതുപോലെതന്നെ ഗ്രീക്കുകാരിൽ പ്രമുഖരായ അനേക വനിതകളും പുരുഷന്മാരും വിശ്വസിച്ചു.
Many of them, therefore, believed; both of the Grecian women of considerable rank, and of the men not a few.
13 പൗലോസ് ബെരോവയിൽ ദൈവവചനം പ്രസംഗിക്കുന്നെന്നു കേട്ട തെസ്സലോനിക്യയിലെ യെഹൂദർ അവിടെയും ചെന്നു ജനക്കൂട്ടത്തെ ഇളക്കി പ്രക്ഷോഭമുണ്ടാക്കി.
But as soon as some of the Jews of Thessalonica understood that the word of God was announced by Paul at Berea, they came thither, also, exciting the populace.
14 സഹോദരങ്ങൾ ഉടനെതന്നെ പൗലോസിനെ കടൽത്തീരത്തേക്കയച്ചു; ശീലാസും തിമോത്തിയോസും ബെരോവയിൽത്തന്നെ തുടർന്നു.
And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul, as if he were to go by sea. But Silas and Timothy continued there.
15 പൗലോസിന് അകമ്പടിയായി കൂടെപ്പോയവർ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അഥേനയിൽ എത്തിച്ചു. ശീലാസും തിമോത്തിയോസും കഴിയുന്നത്ര വേഗത്തിൽ തന്റെയടുക്കൽ വന്നുചേരണമെന്ന പൗലോസിന്റെ നിർദേശവും വാങ്ങി അവർ മടങ്ങിപ്പോയി.
And they that conducted Paul, brought him as far as Athens: and having received an order for Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him as soon as possible, they set out.
16 പൗലോസ് അവരെ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച് അഥേനയിൽ കഴിയുമ്പോൾ, നഗരം വിഗ്രഹങ്ങൾകൊണ്ടു നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നതുകണ്ട് വളരെ അസ്വസ്ഥനായി.
Now, while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit within him was strongly moved when he beheld the city enslaved to idolatry.
17 അതുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം പള്ളിയിൽവെച്ച് യെഹൂദരോടും ദൈവഭക്തരായ ഗ്രീക്കുകാരോടും, ചന്തസ്ഥലത്തുവെച്ച് അവിടെ വന്നുപോകുന്നവരോടും ദിനംപ്രതി സംവാദം നടത്തിപ്പോന്നു.
He therefore reasoned with the Jews and proselytes in the synagogue; and in the forum, daily, with those who met with him.
18 എപ്പിക്കൂര്യരും സ്റ്റോയിക്കരുമായ ഒരുകൂട്ടം തത്ത്വചിന്തകന്മാർ അദ്ദേഹത്തോടു തർക്കിച്ചു. “എന്താണ് ഈ വിടുവായൻ പറയാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നത്?” എന്നു ചിലർ ചോദിച്ചു. “ഇയാൾ അന്യദൈവങ്ങളെ പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നവൻ ആണെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു,” മറ്റുചിലർ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. അദ്ദേഹം യേശുക്രിസ്തുവിനെയും പുനരുത്ഥാനത്തെയുംപറ്റിയുള്ള സുവിശേഷം പ്രസംഗിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടാണ് അവർ ഇതെല്ലാം പറഞ്ഞത്.
Then some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers opposed him. Others said, What would this babbler say? And others, he seems to be a proclaimer of foreign deities; because he declared to them the good news concerning Jesus and the resurrection.
19 പിന്നീട് അവർ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അരയോപാഗസ് എന്ന സ്ഥാനത്തേക്കു കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോയി. അവിടെവെച്ച് അവർ, “താങ്കൾ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഈ പുതിയ ഉപദേശം എന്തെന്ന് ഞങ്ങൾക്കറിയാൻ കഴിയുമോ?
And they took him and conducted him to the Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, which is spoken by you?
20 താങ്കൾ ചില വിചിത്ര ആശയങ്ങൾ ഞങ്ങളുടെ ചെവിയിലേക്കു കടത്തിവിടുന്നു. അവയുടെ അർഥം എന്താണെന്നറിയാൻ ഞങ്ങൾക്കാഗ്രഹമുണ്ട്” എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തോടു പറഞ്ഞു.
for you bring some strange things to our ears; we would, therefore, know what these things mean.
21 (ഏറ്റവും പുതുമയുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങൾ കേൾക്കുന്നതിനും ചർച്ചചെയ്യുന്നതിനുമല്ലാതെ യാതൊന്നിനും അഥേനർക്കും അവിടെ താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന വിദേശികളായ മറ്റുള്ളവർക്കും സമയമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.)
For all the Athenians, and the strangers that sojourned among them spent their leisure in nothing else but in telling or hearing news.
22 അരയോപാഗസ് എന്ന സ്ഥാനത്ത് എഴുന്നേറ്റുനിന്നുകൊണ്ട് പൗലോസ് ഇങ്ങനെ പ്രസംഗിച്ചു: “അഥേനയിലെ ജനങ്ങളേ, നിങ്ങൾ എല്ലാവിധത്തിലും വളരെ മതനിഷ്ഠയുള്ളവരാണ് എന്നു ഞാൻ മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു.
Paul, therefore, standing up in the middle of Areopagus, said, Athenians, I perceive that you are exceedingly addicted to the worship of demons.
23 ഞാൻ ചുറ്റിനടന്ന് നിങ്ങളുടെ ആരാധ്യവസ്തുക്കൾ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചുവരുമ്പോൾ, അജ്ഞാത ദേവന്, എന്നെഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ബലിപീഠം എന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെട്ടു. നിങ്ങൾ അജ്ഞതയിൽ ആരാധിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് ഞാൻ നിങ്ങളുടെമുമ്പിൽ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാൻ പോകുന്നത്:
For, as I passed along, and beheld the objects of your worship, I found an altar with this inscription, To the Unknown God: Him, therefore, you ignorantly worship, I announce to you.
24 “പ്രപഞ്ചവും അതിലുള്ള സകലതും സൃഷ്ടിച്ചത് ദൈവമാണ്. അവിടന്ന് ആകാശത്തിന്റെയും ഭൂമിയുടെയും അധിപനാകുന്നു. മനുഷ്യകരങ്ങളാൽ നിർമിതമായ ആലയങ്ങളിൽ വസിക്കുന്നയാളല്ല സർവേശ്വരൻ.
The God who made the world, and all things that are in it, being the Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands:
25 അവിടന്ന് എല്ലാവർക്കും ജീവന്റെയും ശ്വാസത്തിന്റെയുംമാത്രമല്ല സർവനന്മകളുടെയും ദാതാവാകുകയാൽ, അവിടത്തേക്ക് എന്തെങ്കിലും ആവശ്യമുള്ളവൻ എന്നതുപോലെ മനുഷ്യകരങ്ങളാൽ പരിചരിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല.
Neither is he served by human hands, as if he stood in need of anything; he himself giving to all, life, and breath, and all things.
26 ഭൂമിയിൽ എല്ലായിടത്തും അധിവസിക്കാൻ ഏകമനുഷ്യനിൽനിന്ന് അവിടന്ന് സകലജനതയെയും ഉളവാക്കി; അവർക്കു ജീവിക്കാനുള്ള കാലാവധികളും കൃത്യമായ സ്ഥലങ്ങളും നിർണയിച്ചു.
And he has made of one blood, the whole race of men, to inhabit all the face of the earth; having marked out the times previously arranged in order, and the boundaries of their habitations:
27 മനുഷ്യർ ദൈവത്തെ അന്വേഷിക്കാനും സാധ്യമെങ്കിൽ ആ അന്വേഷണത്തിലൂടെ ദൈവത്തെ കണ്ടെത്താനുമാണ് ഇങ്ങനെ ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ അവിടന്ന് നമ്മിൽ ആരിൽനിന്നും വിദൂരസ്ഥനല്ല.
that they might seek after the Lord, if possibly they might feel after him, and find him; though he be not far from every one of us:
28 ‘ദൈവത്തിൽത്തന്നെയാണ് നാം ജീവിക്കുന്നതും ചലിക്കുന്നതും സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതും.’ നിങ്ങളുടെതന്നെ ചില കവിവര്യന്മാർ, ‘നാം അവിടത്തെ സന്താനങ്ങളാണ്’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടല്ലോ!
for in him we live, and are moved, and do exist; as some of your own poets have said--"For we his offspring are."
29 “അങ്ങനെ നാം ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സന്താനങ്ങളായിരിക്കുകയാൽ, സ്വർണത്തിലോ വെള്ളിയിലോ കല്ലിലോ ശില്പചാതുരിയോടെ മനുഷ്യൻ രൂപകൽപ്പനചെയ്ത ഒരു രൂപത്തോടു സദൃശനാണ് ദൈവം എന്നു നാം ചിന്തിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല.
We, therefore, being the offspring of God, ought not to imagine the Deity to be like gold, or silver, or stone, wrought by the art and contrivance of man.
30 കഴിഞ്ഞകാലങ്ങളിൽ ദൈവം അങ്ങനെയുള്ള അജ്ഞതയെ അവഗണിച്ചിരുന്നു; എന്നാൽ ഇപ്പോൾ എല്ലായിടത്തുമുള്ള എല്ലാവരും തങ്ങളുടെ പാപങ്ങൾ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ദൈവത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിയണമെന്ന് അവിടന്ന് ആജ്ഞാപിക്കുന്നു.
For though God overlooked the times of ignorance, he now makes proclamation to all men, everywhere, to reform;
31 അവിടന്ന് നിയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഒരു മനുഷ്യനാൽത്തന്നെ ലോകത്തെ ന്യായംവിധിക്കാൻ ഒരു ദിവസം ദൈവം നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ദൈവം നിയോഗിച്ച ആ മനുഷ്യനെ മരിച്ചവരിൽനിന്ന് ഉയിർപ്പിച്ചതിലൂടെ, ഇതിനുള്ള വ്യക്തമായ നിദർശനം നമുക്കു നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നു.”
because he has appointed a day, in which he will judge the world righteously, by that Man whom he has ordained: of which he has given assurance to all men, by raising him from the dead.
32 മരിച്ചവരുടെ ഉയിർത്തെഴുന്നേൽപ്പിനെക്കുറിച്ചു കേട്ടപ്പോൾ അവരിൽ ചിലർ പരിഹസിച്ചു; മറ്റുചിലരോ, “ഈ വിഷയം സംബന്ധിച്ച് താങ്കളുടെ വാക്കുകൾ വീണ്ടും കേൾക്കാൻ ഞങ്ങളാഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some made a jest of it, and others said, We will hear you again upon this subject.
33 ഇതിനുശേഷം പൗലോസ് അരയോപാഗസ് സ്ഥാനത്തുനിന്ന് പോയി.
And this Paul went out of the midst of them.
34 ഏതാനുംപേർ ക്രിസ്തുവിൽ വിശ്വസിച്ച് പൗലോസിന്റെ അനുചരർ ആയിത്തീർന്നു. അവരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ, അരയോപാഗസിലെ അംഗമായിരുന്ന ദിയൊനുസ്യോസും ദമരിസ് എന്നു പേരുള്ള ഒരു സ്ത്രീയും മറ്റുപലരും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
Nevertheless, some men adhered to him, and believed: among whom was Dionysius, the Areopagite; also a woman, whose name was Damaris; and others with them.
