1 അതിനുശേഷം ദാവീദ് തന്നോടുകൂടെയുള്ള സൈന്യത്തെ വിളിച്ചുകൂട്ടി എണ്ണം തിട്ടപ്പെടുത്തുകയും അവർക്കു സഹസ്രാധിപന്മാരെയും ശതാധിപന്മാരെയും നിയമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
Then David reviewed his troops and appointed over them commanders of hundreds and of thousands.
2 ദാവീദ് തന്റെ പടയാളികളിൽ മൂന്നിലൊരുഭാഗത്തെ യോവാബിന്റെ ആധിപത്യത്തിലും മൂന്നിലൊന്നിനെ യോവാബിന്റെ സഹോദരനും സെരൂയയുടെ മകനുമായ അബീശായിയുടെ ആധിപത്യത്തിലും ബാക്കിയുള്ള മൂന്നിലൊന്നിനെ ഗിത്യനായ ഇത്ഥായിയുടെ ആധിപത്യത്തിലും ആക്കി അയച്ചു. “ഞാനും തീർച്ചയായും നിങ്ങളോടുകൂടി മുന്നണിയിലേക്കുവരുന്നു,” എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു.
He sent out the troops, a third under Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. And the king said to the troops, “I will surely march out with you as well.”
3 എന്നാൽ ജനം പറഞ്ഞു: “അങ്ങു വരരുത്! ഞങ്ങൾ തോറ്റോടേണ്ടതായിവന്നാലും അവർ ഞങ്ങളെ കാര്യമാക്കുകയില്ല. ഞങ്ങളിൽ പകുതി ആളുകൾ വധിക്കപ്പെട്ടാലും അതാരും പരിഗണിക്കുകയില്ല. പക്ഷേ, അങ്ങോ! അങ്ങ് ഞങ്ങളിൽ പതിനായിരംപേർക്കു തുല്യനത്രേ! അങ്ങു നഗരത്തിലിരുന്ന് ഞങ്ങളെ സഹായിക്കുന്നതാണു നല്ലത്.”
But the people pleaded, “You must not go out! For if we have to flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It is better for now if you support us from the city.”
4 “നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉചിതമെന്നു തോന്നുന്നതു ഞാൻ ചെയ്യാം,” എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു. അതിനാൽ രാജാവു പടിവാതിൽക്കൽ നിന്നു. സകലജനങ്ങളും നൂറുനൂറായും ആയിരമായിരമായും കടന്നുപോയി.
“I will do whatever seems best to you,” the king replied. So he stood beside the gate, while all the troops marched out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 രാജാവ് യോവാബിനോടും അബീശായിയോടും ഇത്ഥായിയോടും: “എന്നെ ഓർത്ത് അബ്ശാലോംകുമാരനോട് ദയവോടെ പെരുമാറുക,” എന്നു കൽപ്പിച്ചു. അബ്ശാലോമിനെക്കുറിച്ച് രാജാവു സൈന്യാധിപന്മാർ ഓരോരുത്തരോടും കൽപ്പിക്കുന്നത് പടയാളികളെല്ലാം കേട്ടിരുന്നു.
Now the king had commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, “Treat the young man Absalom gently for my sake.” And all the people heard the king’s orders to each of the commanders regarding Absalom.
6 അങ്ങനെ സൈന്യം ഇസ്രായേലിനെ നേരിടുന്നതിനായി പട്ടണത്തിനുപുറത്തേക്കു നീങ്ങി. എഫ്രയീം വനത്തിൽവെച്ച് അവർ ഏറ്റുമുട്ടി.
So David’s army marched into the field to engage Israel in the battle, which took place in the forest of Ephraim.
7 അവിടെവെച്ച് ഇസ്രായേൽസൈന്യം ദാവീദിന്റെ ചേവകരോടു തോറ്റു. അന്ന് ഒരു മഹാസംഹാരം നടന്നു. ഇരുപതിനായിരം പടയാളികൾ വധിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
There the people of Israel were defeated by David’s servants, and the slaughter was great that day—twenty thousand men.
8 യുദ്ധം ആ പ്രദേശമെല്ലാം പരന്നു. അന്ന് വാളിനാൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടവരിൽ അധികംപേർ വനത്തിന്റെ ഘോരതനിമിത്തം കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു.
The battle spread over the whole countryside, and that day the forest devoured more people than the sword.
9 അബ്ശാലോം ദാവീദിന്റെ സൈന്യത്തിന് എതിരേ പുറപ്പെട്ടു. അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കോവർകഴുതപ്പുറത്ത് ഓടിച്ചുപോയി. ഇടതൂർന്ന ശിഖരങ്ങളോടുകൂടിയ ഒരു കരുവേലകത്തിന്റെ അടിയിലൂടെ കഴുത ഓടിപ്പോയപ്പോൾ അബ്ശാലോമിന്റെ തലമുടി ആ മരത്തിൽ കുരുങ്ങി. അദ്ദേഹം സഞ്ചരിച്ചിരുന്ന കഴുത ഓടിപ്പോകുകയും അദ്ദേഹം ആകാശത്തിനും ഭൂമിക്കും മധ്യേ തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
Now Absalom was riding on his mule when he met the servants of David, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom’s head was caught fast in the tree. The mule under him kept going, so that he was suspended in midair.
10 പടയാളികളിൽ ഒരുവൻ ഇതുകണ്ട് ഓടിച്ചെന്നു യോവാബിനോട്: “അബ്ശാലോം ഒരു കരുവേലകത്തിൽ തൂങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്നതു ഞാൻ കണ്ടു” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
When one of the men saw this, he told Joab, “I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree!”
11 തന്നോടിതു പറഞ്ഞ ആളിനോടു യോവാബു ചോദിച്ചു: “എന്ത്! നീ കണ്ടെന്നോ? എങ്കിൽ നീ അവിടെവെച്ചുതന്നെ അവനെ വെട്ടി നിലത്തു വീഴ്ത്താഞ്ഞതെന്തുകൊണ്ട്? എങ്കിൽ ഞാൻ നിനക്കു പത്തുശേക്കേൽ വെള്ളിയും ഒരു അരപ്പട്ടയും നൽകുമായിരുന്നല്ലോ!”
“You just saw him!” Joab exclaimed. “Why did you not strike him to the ground right there? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a warrior’s belt!”
12 എന്നാൽ ആ മനുഷ്യൻ യോവാബിനോട് ഈ വിധം മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു: “ഒരായിരം ശേക്കേൽ വെള്ളി എന്റെ കൈയിൽ തൂക്കിത്തന്നാലും ഞാൻ രാജകുമാരന്റെനേരേ കൈ ഉയർത്തുകയില്ല. ‘എന്നെ ഓർത്ത് അബ്ശാലോം രാജകുമാരനെ സംരക്ഷിക്കണം,’ എന്ന് ഞങ്ങളെല്ലാം കേൾക്കെയാണല്ലോ രാജാവ് അങ്ങയോടും അബീശായിയോടും ഇത്ഥായിയോടും കൽപ്പിച്ചത്.
The man replied, “Even if a thousand shekels of silver were weighed out into my hands, I would not raise my hand against the son of the king. For we heard the king command you and Abishai and Ittai, ‘Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.’
13 മറിച്ച്, ഞാൻ കുമാരന്റെ നേരേ വഞ്ചനകാട്ടി എന്റെ ജീവൻ അപകടത്തിലാക്കിയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ—രാജാവിന് അജ്ഞാതമായിരിക്കുകയില്ലല്ലോ—അങ്ങുതന്നെ എന്നിൽനിന്ന് അകന്നുനിൽക്കുമായിരുന്നു.”
If I had jeopardized my own life —and nothing is hidden from the king—you would have abandoned me.”
14 “നിന്നോടു സംസാരിച്ചുനിന്ന് ഞാൻ സമയം പാഴാക്കുകയില്ല,” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു യോവാബ് മൂന്നു വേൽ കൈയിലെടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് അവിടെ ഓടിയെത്തി. അപ്പോഴും കരുവേലകത്തിൽ ജീവനോടെ തൂങ്ങിക്കിടന്നിരുന്ന അബ്ശാലോമിന്റെ നെഞ്ചിൽ അവ കുത്തിയിറക്കി.
But Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like this with you!” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the oak tree.
15 യോവാബിന്റെ ആയുധവാഹകരിൽ പത്തുപേർ അബ്ശാലോമിന്റെ ചുറ്റുംനിന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അടിച്ചുകൊന്നു.
And ten young men who carried Joab’s armor surrounded Absalom, struck him, and killed him.
16 അപ്പോൾ യോവാബു കാഹളമൂതി, യോവാബു വിലക്കിയതിനാൽ പടയാളികൾ ഇസ്രായേലിനെ പിൻതുടരുന്നതു മതിയാക്കി.
Then Joab blew the ram’s horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel because Joab had restrained them.
17 അവർ അബ്ശാലോമിനെ എടുത്ത് വനത്തിലെ ഒരു വലിയ കുഴിയിൽ ഇട്ടു; അയാളുടെമേൽ ഒരു വലിയ കൽക്കൂമ്പാരം കൂട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇതിനിടെ ഇസ്രായേലെല്ലാം താന്താങ്ങളുടെ ഭവനത്തിലേക്ക് ഓടിപ്പോയി.
They took Absalom, cast him into a large pit in the forest, and piled a huge mound of stones over him. Meanwhile, all the Israelites fled, each to his home.
18 അബ്ശാലോം ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നകാലത്തു തനിക്കു സ്മാരകമായി രാജതാഴ്വരയിൽ ഒരു സ്തംഭം സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരുന്നു. “എന്റെ ഓർമ നിലനിർത്താൻ എനിക്കൊരു മകനില്ലല്ലോ,” എന്നു ചിന്തിച്ചിട്ട് അദ്ദേഹം ആ സ്തംഭത്തിനു തന്റെ പേരുതന്നെ നൽകിയിരുന്നു. ഇന്നും അത് അബ്ശാലോമിന്റെ സ്മാരകം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
During his lifetime, Absalom had set up for himself a pillar in the King’s Valley, for he had said, “I have no son to preserve the memory of my name.” So he gave the pillar his name, and to this day it is called Absalom’s Monument.
19 അപ്പോൾ സാദോക്കിന്റെ മകനായ അഹീമാസ്: “ഞാൻ ഓടിച്ചെന്ന്, രാജാവിനെ തന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളുടെ കൈയിൽനിന്നു യഹോവ വിടുവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന വർത്തമാനം അറിയിക്കട്ടെ!” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
Then Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, “Please let me run and tell the king the good news that the LORD has avenged him of his enemies.”
20 യോവാബ് അദ്ദേഹത്തോട്: “ഇന്നു വാർത്ത കൊടുക്കേണ്ടതു നീയല്ല; ഇനി ഒരവസരത്തിൽ നിനക്കു വാർത്തയുമായി പോകാം. രാജകുമാരൻ മരിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാൽ ഇന്നു നീ വാർത്തയുമായി പോകരുത്,” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
But Joab replied, “You are not the man to take good news today. You may do it another day, but you must not do so today, because the king’s son is dead.”
21 അതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് യോവാബ് ഒരു കൂശ്യനെ വിളിച്ച്: “നീ കണ്ടത് ചെന്ന് രാജാവിനെ അറിയിക്കുക” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. കൂശ്യൻ യോവാബിനെ വണങ്ങിയിട്ട് ഓടിപ്പോയി.
So Joab said to a Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have seen.” The Cushite bowed to Joab and took off running.
22 സാദോക്കിന്റെ മകനായ അഹീമാസ് വീണ്ടും യോവാബിനോടു നിർബന്ധിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞു: “എന്തും സംഭവിക്കട്ടെ! കൂശ്യന്റെ പിന്നാലെ ഓടാൻ എന്നെ അനുവദിച്ചാലും!” എന്നാൽ യോവാബു മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു: “എന്റെ മകനേ, നീ എന്തിനു പോകാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു? ഒരു പ്രതിഫലം ലഭിക്കുന്ന വാർത്തയല്ല നിനക്ക് അറിയിക്കാനുള്ളത്.”
Ahimaaz son of Zadok, however, persisted and said to Joab, “Regardless of whatever may happen, please let me also run behind the Cushite!” “My son,” Joab replied, “why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”
23 അയാൾ വീണ്ടും നിർബന്ധപൂർവം: “എന്തും വരട്ടെ, ഞാൻ ഓടിച്ചെല്ലും” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. അതിനാൽ “ഓടിക്കൊള്ളുക!” യോവാബ് പറഞ്ഞു. അഹീമാസ് സമഭൂമി വഴിയായി ഓടി കൂശ്യനെ പിന്നിലാക്കി.
“No matter what, I want to run!” he replied. “Then run!” Joab told him. So Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the Cushite.
24 ഈ സമയത്ത് ഉള്ളിലെയും പുറത്തെയും കവാടങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലായി ദാവീദ് ഇരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. കാവൽക്കാരൻ മതിലിങ്കലെ കവാടത്തിന്റെ മുകൾത്തട്ടിൽ കയറിനിന്നു നോക്കി. ഒരുവൻ തനിച്ച് ഓടിവരുന്നത് അയാൾ കണ്ടു.
Now David was sitting between the two gates when the watchman went up to the roof of the gateway by the wall, looked out, and saw a man running alone.
25 കാവൽക്കാരൻ ആ വിവരം രാജാവിനെ വിളിച്ചറിയിച്ചു. “അയാൾ തനിച്ചാണു വരുന്നതെങ്കിൽ ശുഭവർത്തമാനമായിരിക്കും,” എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു. അയാൾ ഓടിയടുത്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
So he called out and told the king. “If he is alone,” the king replied, “he bears good news.” As the first runner drew near,
26 പിന്നെ മറ്റൊരാൾകൂടി ഓടിവരുന്നതു കാവൽക്കാരൻ കണ്ടു. അയാൾ കവാടസൂക്ഷിപ്പുകാരനെ വിളിച്ചറിയിച്ചു. “ഇതാ! മറ്റൊരാൾകൂടി തനിയേ ഓടിവരുന്നു!” “അവനും ശുഭവർത്തമാനമായിരിക്കും കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നത്,” എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു.
the watchman saw another man running, and he called out to the gatekeeper, “Look! Another man is running alone!” “This one also brings good news,” said the king.
27 “ഓടിവരുന്നവരിൽ ആദ്യത്തെ ആൾ സാദോക്കിന്റെ മകനായ അഹീമാസിനെപ്പോലെ എനിക്കുതോന്നുന്നു,” എന്ന് കാവൽക്കാരൻ പറഞ്ഞു. “അവൻ നല്ലവനാണ്; അവൻ ശുഭവർത്തമാനം കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നു,” എന്നു രാജാവു പറഞ്ഞു.
The watchman said, “The first man appears to me to be running like Ahimaaz son of Zadok.” “This is a good man,” said the king. “He comes with good news.”
28 അപ്പോൾ അഹീമാസ് രാജാവിനോട്, “എല്ലാം ശുഭമായിരിക്കുന്നു” എന്നു വിളിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞു. അയാൾ രാജാവിന്റെ മുമ്പാകെ സാഷ്ടാംഗം നമസ്കരിച്ചശേഷം പറഞ്ഞു: “അങ്ങയുടെ ദൈവമായ യഹോവയ്ക്കു സ്തോത്രം! എന്റെ യജമാനനായ രാജാവിനെതിരേ കൈ ഉയർത്തിയവരെ അവിടന്ന് ഏൽപ്പിച്ചുതന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.”
Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, “All is well!” And he bowed facedown before the king. He continued, “Blessed be the LORD your God! He has delivered up the men who raised their hands against my lord the king.”
29 “അബ്ശാലോംകുമാരൻ സുരക്ഷിതനായിരിക്കുന്നോ?” എന്നു രാജാവു ചോദിച്ചു. അഹീമാസ് ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞു: “രാജാവേ! അങ്ങയുടെ ദാസനായ അടിയനെ യോവാബു പറഞ്ഞയയ്ക്കുമ്പോൾ ഞാനൊരു വലിയ ബഹളം കണ്ടു. എന്നാൽ അതെന്താണെന്ന് എനിക്കറിയാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.”
The king asked, “Is the young man Absalom all right?” And Ahimaaz replied, “When Joab sent the king’s servant and your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was.”
30 “നീ അവിടെ മാറിനിൽക്കുക,” എന്നു രാജാവു കൽപ്പിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ അയാൾ അവിടെ മാറിനിന്നു.
“Move aside,” said the king, “and stand here.” So he stepped aside.
31 അപ്പോൾ കൂശ്യൻവന്ന് അറിയിച്ചു: “എന്റെ യജമാനനായ രാജാവേ, ശുഭവർത്തമാനം കേട്ടാലും! അങ്ങേക്കെതിരേ ഉയർന്ന എല്ലാവരുടെയും പിടിയിൽനിന്ന് യഹോവ ഇന്ന് അങ്ങയെ വിടുവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.”
Just then the Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king hear the good news: Today the LORD has avenged you of all who rose up against you!”
32 “അബ്ശാലോംകുമാരൻ സുരക്ഷിതനായിരിക്കുന്നോ?” രാജാവു കൂശ്യനോടു ചോദിച്ചു. “എന്റെ യജമാനനായ രാജാവിന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളും അങ്ങയെ ദ്രോഹിക്കാൻ മുതിരുന്ന എല്ലാവരും ആ കുമാരനെപ്പോലെ ആയിത്തീരട്ടെ!” എന്നു കൂശ്യൻ മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു.
The king asked the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom all right?” And the Cushite replied, “May what has become of the young man happen to the enemies of my lord the king and to all who rise up against you to harm you.”
33 രാജാവു നടുങ്ങിപ്പോയി. അദ്ദേഹം പടിപ്പുരമാളികയിൽ കയറി വിലപിച്ചു. പോകുമ്പോൾ “എന്റെ മകനേ, അബ്ശാലോമേ! എന്റെ മകനേ, എന്റെ മകനേ, അബ്ശാലോമേ! നിനക്കുപകരം ഞാൻ മരിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ! അബ്ശാലോമേ, എന്റെ മകനേ! എന്റെ മകനേ!” എന്നിങ്ങനെ അദ്ദേഹം വിലപിച്ചു.
The king was shaken and went up to the gate chamber and wept. And as he walked, he cried out, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”
