2 ശമൂവേൽ 11

1 അടുത്ത വസന്തകാലത്ത്, രാജാക്കന്മാർ യുദ്ധത്തിനു പുറപ്പെടാറുള്ള സമയത്ത്, ദാവീദ് യോവാബിനെയും കൂടെ രാജസേവകന്മാരെയും മുഴുവൻ ഇസ്രായേൽസൈന്യത്തെയും അയച്ചു. അവർ അമ്മോന്യരെ നശിപ്പിക്കുകയും രബ്ബാനഗരത്തെ ഉപരോധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാൽ ദാവീദ്, ജെറുശലേമിൽത്തന്നെ താമസിച്ചു.

In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out Joab and his servants with the whole army of Israel. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.

2 അന്ന് ഒരു സായാഹ്നത്തിൽ ദാവീദ് തന്റെ മെത്തയിൽനിന്ന് എഴുന്നേറ്റ് കൊട്ടാരത്തിന്റെ മട്ടുപ്പാവിൽ ഉലാത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം മട്ടുപ്പാവിൽ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട്, ഒരു സ്ത്രീ കുളിക്കുന്നതു കണ്ടു. ആ സ്ത്രീ അതീവസുന്ദരിയായിരുന്നു.

One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around on the roof of the palace. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman.

3 അവൾ ആരെന്ന് അന്വേഷിച്ചറിയുന്നതിന് ദാവീദ് ഒരാളെ അയച്ചു. അയാൾ തിരിച്ചുവന്ന്: “അത് ബേത്ത്-ശേബയാണ്, അവൾ എലീയാമിന്റെ മകളും ഹിത്യനായ ഊരിയാവിന്റെ ഭാര്യയുമാണ്” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

So David sent and inquired about the woman, and he was told, “This is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”

4 അവളെ കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുവരാൻ ദാവീദ് ദൂതന്മാരെ അയച്ചു. അവൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അടുത്തുവന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം അവളോടൊപ്പം കിടക്കപങ്കിട്ടു (അവൾ ഋതുസ്നാനം കഴിഞ്ഞ് ശുദ്ധിപ്രാപിച്ചിരുന്നു). പിന്നെ അവൾ സ്വഭവനത്തിലേക്കു മടങ്ങിപ്പോയി.

Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came to him, he slept with her. (Now she had just purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned home.

5 അവൾ “ഞാൻ ഗർഭവതിയായിരിക്കുന്നു,” എന്ന് ദാവീദിനെ ആളയച്ച് വിവരം അറിയിച്ചു.

And the woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, “I am pregnant.”

6 “ഹിത്യനായ ഊരിയാവിനെ എന്റെ അടുത്തേക്കയയ്ക്കുക,” എന്നു ദാവീദ് യോവാബിനു കൽപ്പന അയച്ചു. യോവാബ് അയാളെ ദാവീദിന്റെ അടുത്തേക്കയച്ചു.

At this, David sent orders to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David.

7 ഊരിയാവ് ദാവീദിന്റെ അടുത്തെത്തി. ദാവീദ് അയാളോട് യോവാബിന്റെയും പടജനത്തിന്റെയും ക്ഷേമവും യുദ്ധഗതിയും അന്വേഷിച്ചു.

When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the troops were doing with the war.

8 പിന്നെ ദാവീദ് ഊരിയാവിനോടു കൽപ്പിച്ചു: “നിന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു പോയി പാദങ്ങൾ കഴുകുക.” അങ്ങനെ ഊരിയാവ് കൊട്ടാരം വിട്ടിറങ്ങി. രാജാവിന്റെ പക്കൽനിന്ന് ഒരു സമ്മാനവും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പിൻതുടർന്നെത്തി.

Then he said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king followed him.

9 എന്നാൽ ഊരിയാവ് കൊട്ടാരവാതിൽക്കൽ തന്റെ യജമാനന്റെ ദാസന്മാരോടൊപ്പം കിടന്നുറങ്ങി; അദ്ദേഹം സ്വഭവനത്തിലേക്കു പോയതുമില്ല.

But Uriah slept at the door of the palace with all his master’s servants; he did not go down to his house.

10 “ഊരിയാവ് സ്വഭവനത്തിലേക്കു പോയില്ല,” എന്നു ദാവീദ് അറിഞ്ഞു. “നീ ദൂരയാത്ര കഴിഞ്ഞുവന്നതല്ലേ? എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണു വീട്ടിലേക്കു പോകാതിരുന്നത്?” എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം ചോദിച്ചു.

And David was told, “Uriah did not go home.” “Haven’t you just arrived from a journey?” David asked Uriah. “Why didn’t you go home?”

11 ഊരിയാവ് അദ്ദേഹത്തോടു മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു: “പേടകവും ഇസ്രായേലും യെഹൂദയും കൂടാരങ്ങളിൽ പാർക്കുന്നു. എന്റെ യജമാനനായ യോവാബും, രാജാവേ! അങ്ങയുടെ സേവകരും വെളിമ്പ്രദേശത്തു കൂടാരമടിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ എനിക്കെങ്ങനെ വീട്ടിൽപോയി തിന്നുകുടിച്ചു കഴിയാനും ഭാര്യയോടുകൂടി രമിക്കാനും കഴിയും! അങ്ങയുടെ ജീവനാണെ, ഞാനങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യുകയില്ല!”

Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”

12 അപ്പോൾ ദാവീദ് അദ്ദേഹത്തോടു പറഞ്ഞു: “ഒരു ദിവസംകൂടി നിൽക്കുക! നാളെ ഞാൻ നിന്നെ യാത്രയയയ്ക്കാം.” അങ്ങനെ ഊരിയാവ് അന്നും അതിനടുത്ത ദിവസവും ജെറുശലേമിൽ താമസിച്ചു.

“Stay here one more day,” David said to Uriah, “and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.

13 ദാവീദിന്റെ ക്ഷണം അനുസരിച്ച് ഊരിയാവ് അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം തിന്നുകയും കുടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദാവീദ് അയാളെ വീഞ്ഞുകുടിപ്പിച്ചു മത്തനാക്കി. എന്നിട്ട് ഊരിയാവ് സന്ധ്യാസമയത്ത് പുറത്തുകടന്ന് യജമാനന്റെ സേവകഗണത്തോടൊപ്പം തന്റെ പായിൽ കിടന്നുറങ്ങി; അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ വീട്ടിൽ പോയില്ല.

Then David invited Uriah to eat and drink with him, and he got Uriah drunk. And in the evening Uriah went out to lie down on his cot with his master’s servants, but he did not go home.

14 പിറ്റേന്നു രാവിലെ ദാവീദ് യോവാബിന് ഒരു കത്തെഴുതി ഊരിയാവിന്റെ കൈവശം കൊടുത്തയച്ചു.

The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.

15 അതിൽ അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയിരുന്നു: “ഊരിയാവിനെ അത്യുഗ്രമായ പോരാട്ടം നടക്കുന്നിടത്തു മുൻനിരയിൽ നിർത്തണം. അങ്ങനെ അവൻ വെട്ടേറ്റുവീണു മരിക്കത്തക്കവണ്ണം അവനെ വിട്ടു പിൻവാങ്ങണം.”

In the letter he wrote: “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle; then withdraw from him, so that he may be struck down and killed.”

16 അതനുസരിച്ച് യോവാബ് നഗരത്തെ വളയുമ്പോൾ ശൂരരായ എതിരാളികൾ നിലയുറപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നു ബോധ്യമുള്ള ഒരിടത്ത് ഊരിയാവിനെ നിയോഗിച്ചു.

So as Joab besieged the city, he assigned Uriah to a place where he saw the strongest enemy soldiers.

17 നഗരവാസികൾ പുറത്തുകടന്ന് യോവാബിനോടു പോരാടി. ദാവീദിന്റെ സൈന്യത്തിലെ കുറെപ്പേർ വീണുപോയി. ഹിത്യനായ ഊരിയാവും കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു.

And when the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of David’s servants fell, and Uriah the Hittite also died.

18 യോവാബ് ആളയച്ച് യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ പൂർണവിവരണം ദാവീദിനു നൽകി.

Joab sent to David a full account of the battle

19 അദ്ദേഹം ദൂതന്മാരോടു പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു: “നിങ്ങൾ യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ ഈ പൂർണവിവരണം രാജാവിനു നൽകിക്കഴിയുമ്പോൾ,

and instructed the messenger, “When you have finished giving the king all the details of the battle,

20 രാജാവിന്റെ ക്രോധം ജ്വലിക്കും; അദ്ദേഹം നിങ്ങളോടു ചോദിച്ചെന്നുവരാം ‘നിങ്ങൾ നഗരത്തോട് ഇത്രയേറെ അടുത്തുചെന്നു പൊരുതിയതെന്തിന്? അവർ മതിലിന്മേൽനിന്ന് അമ്പെയ്യുമെന്ന് നിങ്ങൾക്കറിഞ്ഞുകൂടായിരുന്നോ?

if the king’s anger flares, he may ask you, ‘Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Did you not realize they would shoot from atop the wall?

21 യെരൂബ്-ബേശെത്തിന്റെ മകനായ അബീമെലെക്കിനെ കൊന്നതാരാണ്? ഒരു സ്ത്രീ മതിലിന്മേൽനിന്ന് തിരികല്ലിന്റെ പിള്ള അയാളുടെമേൽ ഇട്ടതുകൊണ്ടല്ലേ അയാൾ തേബെസിൽവെച്ചു മരിച്ചത്? നിങ്ങൾ മതിലിനോട് ഇത്ര അടുത്തുചെന്നത് എന്തിന്?’ ഇപ്രകാരം അദ്ദേഹം ചോദിച്ചാൽ, ‘അങ്ങയുടെ ഭൃത്യൻ ഹിത്യനായ ഊരിയാവും മരിച്ചു’ എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തോടു പറയണം.”

Who was the one to strike Abimelech son of Jerubbesheth? Was it not a woman who dropped an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?’ If so, then you are to say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.’”

22 ദൂതൻ പുറപ്പെട്ടു. അയാൾ വന്ന് യോവാബു പറഞ്ഞയച്ച കാര്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം ദാവീദിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു.

So the messenger set out and reported to David all that Joab had sent him to say.

23 ദൂതൻ ദാവീദിനോടു പറഞ്ഞത് ഇപ്രകാരമാണ്: “ശത്രുക്കൾ നമ്മെക്കാൾ പ്രബലപ്പെട്ടു. അവർ വെളിമ്പ്രദേശത്തു നമ്മുടെനേരേ വന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഞങ്ങൾ അവരെ നഗരകവാടംവരെ പിന്നാക്കംപായിച്ചു.

The messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate.

24 അപ്പോൾ വില്ലാളികൾ മതിലിന്മേൽനിന്ന് അങ്ങയുടെ സേവകന്മാരുടെമേൽ ശരങ്ങൾ ചൊരിഞ്ഞു. രാജാവിന്റെ പടയാളികളിൽ ചിലർ മരിച്ചുവീണു. കൂടാതെ അങ്ങയുടെ ഭൃത്യൻ ഹിത്യനായ ഊരിയാവും മരിച്ചു.”

Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall, and some of the king’s servants were killed. And your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead as well.”

25 ദാവീദ് ദൂതനോടു പറഞ്ഞു: “യോവാബിനോടു പറയുക, ‘ഇതുമൂലം നീ ദുഃഖിക്കരുത്; വാൾ അങ്ങും ഇങ്ങും നാശം വിതയ്ക്കും. നഗരത്തിനെതിരേ ആക്രമണം ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തി അതിനെ നശിപ്പിക്കുക.’ യോവാബിനെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കാൻ നീ ഈ വിധം പറയുക.”

Then David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Do not let this matter upset you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Strengthen your attack against the city and demolish it.’ Encourage him with these words.”

26 തന്റെ ഭർത്താവു മരിച്ചുപോയി എന്ന് ഊരിയാവിന്റെ ഭാര്യ കേട്ടപ്പോൾ അവൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുവേണ്ടി വിലപിച്ചു.

When Uriah’s wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.

27 വിലാപകാലം കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ദാവീദ് അവളെ തന്റെ കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ വരുത്തി. അവൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാര്യയായിത്തീർന്നു. അവൾ ഒരു പുത്രനെ പ്രസവിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ ദാവീദിന്റെ ഈ പ്രവൃത്തി യഹോവയ്ക്ക് അനിഷ്ടമായിത്തീർന്നു.

And when the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the LORD.
