And in the fifteenth year in the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother, tetrarch of Ituria and the Trachonitis country, and Lusanius tetrarch of Abilene, during the high-priesthood of Annas

2 vaho tami’ty naha-talèm-pisoroñe i Anasy naho i Kaiafa, le nivotrake amy Jaona ana’ i Zakaria am-babangoañe añe ty saontsin’ Añahare.

and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

3 Nitsitsihe’e i tane fiaria’ i saka Iordaneiy nitalily ty filiporam-pisolohoañe ho ami’ty fañahàn-kakeo;

And he came into all the region round about the Jordan preaching the baptism of repentance unto the remissions of sins,

4 ie pinatetse amy boken-tsara’ Isaia mpitokiy ty ti-hoe: Ty fiarañànaña’ i mikoike am-patram-bey añey: Hajario ty lala’ i Talè, Avantaño o oloñolo’eo,

as has been written in the book of Isaiah the prophet, saying; The voice of one roaring in the wilderness; Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.

5 Lembefañe ze hene goledoñe, aketrake ze atao vohitse naho tamboho, ho vantañeñe o mikelokelokeo, naho fonga hareneñe o lalañe tomoantoañeo;

Every valley shall be filled up and every mountain and hill shall be cut down; and the crooked places shall be straight and the rough ways smooth.

6 Vaho ho oni’ ze kila nofotse ty fandrombahan’ Añahare.

And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7 Le hoe re tamy lahialeñe nivovotse mb’ ama’e mb’eo halipotsey: O ry Tariran-dapetake! Ia ty nanoro anahareo hibotitsike amy haviñerañe mitotokey?

Then he said unto the multitudes coming out to be baptized by him; O generations of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Ampiboaho vokatse mañeva soloho; le ko mamototse mitsakore an-troke ao ty hoe, Rae’ay t’i Abraàme. Itaroñako te mahafitroatse anake ho a i Abraàme amo vato retoañe t’i Andrianañahare.

Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say among yourselves; We have Abraham our father.

9 Fa ampoto-katae eo henaneo i fekoñey; le ho firaeñe vaho hafetsak’ añ’afo ao ze hatae tsy mamoa voa soa.

But truly the ax is laid to the root of the trees; Therefore every tree not producing good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 Aa hoe ty ontane’ i lahialeñey ama’e: Ino ty hanoe’ay?

And the multitudes asked him, saying; What then shall we do?

11 Hoe ty natoi’e: Ze aman-tsaroñe roe, soa re te handiva ami’ty tsy ama’e; le hoe izay ka ze manañe mahakama.

And responding he says to them, Let the one having two coats, give to him having none, and let the one having food do likewise.

12 Pok’eo ka o mpamory vili-lohao halipotse, nanao ama’e ty hoe: O Mpañoke, ino ty hanoe’ay?

And the publicans came also to be baptized, and said to him; Teacher, what shall we do!

13 Le hoe re tam’iereo: Ko mangalake mandikoatse ty linily ho anahareo.

And he said to them, Exact no more than that which has been appointed unto you.

14 Le hoe ty ontane’ o lahin-defoñeo: Izahay ka! Ino ty hanoe’ay? Le hoe re tam’iereo: Ko misenge hery ama’ ondaty, le ko manao talily vìlañe, vaho mimoneña amo karama’areoo.

And the soldiers were asking him saying; And what shall we do? And he said to them; Oppress no one, neither defraud; and be content with your wages.

15 Amy fitamà’ ondatioy, le hene niereñere i Jaona añ’arofo te hera ie i Norizañey, ke tsy ie,

And the people waiting and all reasoning in their hearts concerning John, lest he might be the Christ.

16 le hoe ty natoi’ i Jaona am’iareo iaby: Toe alìpoko an-drano ao nahareo, fa homb’eo ty maozatse te amako; tsy mañeva ahy ty hañaha o tomin-kana’eo. Ie ty handipotse anahareo an-Tio Masiñe naho añ-Afo.

John responded to all, saying; I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh One more powerful than I, the latchet of His sandals I am not worthy to loose; He will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire.

17 Am-pità’e ty tsikelo’e, le hahoro’e an-tihy famofohañe ao o vokatseo vaho hatonto’e an-driha o mahakamao, fa ho sodora’e añ’afo tsy hay vonoeñe ty kafo’e.

Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purify His threshing-floor, and gather the wheat into His garner, and will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

18 Mbe maro ty fañosihañe nanoe’e te nitaroñe am’ondatio.

Then indeed exhorting them as to many other things he continued to preach the gospel to the people.

19 Aa ie nitrevoke i Heroda mpanjaka ty amy Herodiasie valin-drahalahi’e naho ze fonga sata raty nanoe’ i Heroda,

And Herod the tetrarch, being convicted by him concerning Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, and concerning the wickedness which Herod did,

20 le mbore nahili’e am-balabey ao t’i Jaona, ho tovo’ iaby rezay.

added also this to all, and shut up John in prison.

21 Ie fonga nalipotse ondatio, nilipotse ka t’Iesoà, niloloke naho nisokake i likerañey

And it came to pass while all the people were being baptized, and Jesus having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

22 vaho nizotso ama’e am-batañe manahake ty deho i Arofo Masiñey, le hoe ty fiarañanañañe hirik’andindìñe ao: Anako irehe, kokoako; Ihe ro mahafale ahiko.

and the Holy Spirit in bodily appearance like a dove descended on Him; and there was a voice from heaven, saying; Thou art my beloved Son, I am delighted in Thee.

And Jesus was beginning to be about thirty years old, being as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Eli,
