1 Awo obudde bwe bwakya, bakabona abakulu bonna n’abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya ne beeyongera okukuŋŋaana ne bateeseza wamu balabe ekkubo lye banaayitamu okutta Yesu.
At daybreak all the Chief Priests and the Councillors of the Nation consulted together against Jesus, to bring about his death.
2 Ne bamusiba, ne bamuweereza ewa Piraato eyali gavana Omuruumi.
They put him in chains and led him away, and gave him up to the Roman Governor, Pilate.
3 Awo Yuda, eyali amuliddemu olukwe, bwe yalaba nga Yesu bamusalidde omusango gwa kufa, n’azzaayo ebitundu amakumi asatu ebya ffeeza eri bakabona abakulu n’abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya,
Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that Jesus was condemned, repented of what he had done, and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the Chief Priests and Councillors.
4 ng’agamba nti, “Nnyonoonye, kubanga ndiddemu olukwe omusaayi ogutalina musango.” Naye ne bamuddamu nti, “kyo kitukwatako kitya? Ezo nsoga zo.”
“I did wrong in betraying a good man to his death,” he said. “What has that to do with us?” they replied. “You must see to that yourself.”
5 Kyeyava addira ensimbi eza ffeeza n’aziyiwa mu Yeekaalu n’afuluma n’agenda yeetuga!
Judas flung down the pieces of silver in the Temple, and left; and went away and hanged himself.
6 Bakabona abakulu ne balondalondawo ensimbi eza ffeeza, ne bagamba nti, “Kya muzizo okuzissa mu ggwanika lya yeekaalu kubanga muwendo gwa musaayi.”
The Chief Priests took the pieces of silver, but they said: “We must not put them into the Temple treasury, because they are blood-money.”
7 Bwe baamala okukikubaganyaako ebirowoozo, ne basalawo okuzigulamu ennimiro ababumbi mwe baggyanga ebbumba. Ne bateesa ennimiro eyo okugifuula ekifo eky’okuziikangamu abagwira.
So, after consultation, they bought with them the ‘Potter’s Field’ for a burial-ground for foreigners;
8 Kyebaava batuuma ennimiro eyo, “Ennimiro y’Omusaayi” n’okutuusa leero.
and that is why that field is called the ‘Field of Blood’ to this very day.
9 Kino ne kituukiriza nnabbi Yeremiya bye yayogera nti, “Baddira ebitundu bya ffeeza amakumi asatu, nga gwe muwendo abaana ba Isirayiri gwe baamulamula,
Then it was that these words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled — ‘They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him who was valued, whom some of the people of Israel valued,
10 ne bagulamu ennimiro eyali ey’ababumbi, nga Mukama bwe yalagira.”
and gave them for the Potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.’
11 Awo Yesu bwe yayimirira mu maaso ga gavana, Omuruumi, gavana n’amubuuza nti, “Ggwe Kabaka w’Abayudaaya?” Yesu n’amuddamu nti, “Okyogedde.”
Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Roman Governor. “Are you the King of the Jews?” asked the Governor. “It is true,” answered Jesus.
12 Naye bakabona abakulu n’abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya bwe baaleeta ensonga zaabwe ze baasinziirako okumuwawaabira, Yesu teyabaanukula.
While charges were being brought against him by the Chief Priests and Councillors, Jesus made no reply.
13 Piraato kwe ku mubuuza nti, “Ebyo byonna bye bakwogerako tobiwulira?”
Then Pilate said to him: “Do not you hear how many accusations they are making against you?”
14 Naye Yesu n’ataddamu kigambo na kimu, era gavana ne kimwewuunyisa nnyo.
Yet Jesus made no reply — not even a single word; at which the Governor was greatly astonished.
15 Gavana yalina empisa ey’okusumulula omusibe omu mu kiseera eky’Embaga y’Okuyitako, ng’omusibe oyo abantu be baamweronderanga.
Now, at the Feast, the Governor was accustomed to grant the people the release of any one prisoner whom they might choose.
16 Mu kkomera mwalimu kkondo lukulwe ng’erinnya lye ye Balaba.
At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.
17 Awo Piraato n’abuuza ekibiina ekyali kikuŋŋaanye nti, “Mwagala mbasumululire ani, Balaba oba Yesu, ayitibwa Kristo?”
So, when the people had collected, Pilate said to them: “Which do you wish me to release for you? Barabbas? Or Jesus who is called ‘Christ’?”
18 Kubanga yamanya ng’abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya bamuwaddeyo lwa buggya.
For he knew that it was out of jealousy that they had given Jesus up to him.
19 Piraato yali akyali wakati mu musango ogwo, mukazi we n’amutumira n’obubaka buno nti, “Toba na nsonga na musajja oyo omutuukirivu kubanga natawaanyizibbwa n’ekirooto eky’omuntu oyo.”
While he was still on the Bench, his wife sent this message to him — “Do not have anything to do with that good man, for I have been very unhappy to-day in a dream on account of him.”
20 Naye bakabona abakulu n’abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya ne basendasenda ebibiina basabeyo Balaba y’aba ateebwa, naye Yesu attibwe.
But the Chief Priests and the Councillors persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to kill Jesus.
21 Gavana bwe yaddamu okubabuuza nti, “Ku bano bombi mbateereko aluwa?” Ekibiina kyonna ne kiddamu nti, “Balaba!”
The Governor, however, said to them: “Which of these two do you wish me to release for you?” “Barabbas,” they answered.
22 Piraato n’ababuuza nti, “Kale Yesu, ayitibwa Kristo, mukole ntya?” buli omu n’addamu nti, “Akomererwe!”
“What then,” Pilate asked, “shall I do with Jesus who is called ‘Christ?’ “Let him be crucified,” they all replied.
23 Piraato n’ababuuza nti, “Lwaki, kiki ky’asobezza?” Naye bo ne beeyongera kuleekaanira waggulu nti, “Akomererwe!”
“Why, what harm has he done?” he asked. But they kept shouting furiously: “Let him be crucified!”
24 Awo Piraato bwe yalaba ng’ensoga talina gy’aziraza, ate ng’ebibiina byagala kusasamala, n’atumya amazzi, n’anaaba engalo ze mu maaso g’ekibiina nga bw’agamba nti, “Nze siriiko musango gwonna olw’omusaayi gw’omuntu ono omulungi. Obuvunaanyizibwa bwonna buli ku mmwe!”
When Pilate saw that his efforts were unavailing, but that, on the contrary, a riot was beginning, he took some water, and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying as he did so: “I am not answerable for this bloodshed; you must see to it yourselves.”
25 Abantu bonna ne baanukula nti, “Omusaayi gwe gubeere ku ffe ne ku baana baffe!”
And all the people answered: “His blood be on our heads and on our children’s!”
26 Awo Piraato n’asumulula Balaba n’abamuwa. Naye bwe yamala okukuba Yesu embooko n’amuwaayo bamukomerere.
The Pilate released Barabbas to them; but Jesus he scourged, and gave him up to be crucified.
27 Naye abaserikale baasooka kumutwala mu luggya lw’olubiri, oluyitibwa Pulayitoliyo ne bakuŋŋaanira eyo, ne bayita bannaabwe bonna.
After that, the Governor’s soldiers took Jesus with them into the Government House, and gathered the whole garrison round him.
28 Awo ne bamwambulamu engoye ze, ne bamwambaza ekyambalo ekimyufu,
They stripped him, and put on him a red military cloak,
29 ne bakola engule mu maggwa ne bagimutikkira, ne bamukwasa olumuli mu mukono gwe ogwa ddyo. Ne bamufukaamirira nga bamuduulira nti, “Mirembe, Kabaka w’Abayudaaya!”
and having twisted some thorns into a crown, put it on his head, and a rod in his right hand, and then, going down on their knees before him, they mocked him. “Long life to you, King of the Jews!” they said.
30 Ne bamuwandira amalusu, ne bamusikako olumuli ne balumukubya ku mutwe.
They spat at him and, taking the rod, kept striking him on the head;
31 Eby’okumuduulira bwe byaggwa, ne bamwambulamu ekyambalo ekimyufu, ne bamwambaza ekyambalo kye ekya bulijjo, ne balyoka bamufulumya okumutwala okumukomerera.
and, when they had left off mocking him, they took off the military cloak, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to be crucified.
32 Bwe baali nga bagenda gye banaamukomerera, ne basisinkana omusajja omukuleene, erinnya lye nga ye Simooni, ne bamulagira lwa maanyi yeetikke omusaalaba gwa Yesu.
As they were on their way out, they came upon a man from Cyrene of the name of Simon; and they compelled him to go with them to carry the cross.
33 Bwe baatuuka mu kifo ekiyitibwa Gologoosa, amakulu nti, “Akasozi k’Ekiwanga,”
On reaching a place named Golgotha (a place named from its likeness to a skull),
34 ne bawa Yesu wayini atabuddwamu omususa, naye bwe yakombako n’amugaana.
they gave him some wine to drink which had been mixed with gall; but after tasting it, Jesus refused to drink it.
35 Bwe baamala okumukomerera, abaserikale ne bagabana ebyambalo bye nga babikubira akalulu.
When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among them by casting lots.
36 Bwe batyo ne batuula awo nga bamukuuma.
Then they sat down, and kept watch over him there.
37 Ne bawanika ekipande waggulu w’omutwe gwe ku musaalaba okuwandiikiddwa nti, “Ono ye Yesu, Kabaka w’Abayudaaya.”
Above his head they fixed the accusation against him written out — ‘THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.’
38 Waaliwo n’abanyazi babiri abaakomererwa naye omu ku ddyo, n’omulala ku kkono.
At the same time two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right, the other on the left.
39 Awo abantu abaali bayitawo, ne bamuvuma nga bamunyeenyeza emitwe
The passers-by railed at him, shaking their heads as they said:
40 nga bwe bagamba nti, “Wagamba okumenya Yeekaalu, ate ogizimbe mu nnaku ssatu! Weerokole okke wansi okuva ku musaalaba, obanga ggwe Mwana wa Katonda.”
“You who ‘destroy the Temple and build one in three days,’ save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross!”
41 Bakabona abakulu n’abawandiisi, n’abakulembeze abalala ne bamuduulira, nga bagamba nti,
In the same way the Chief Priests, with the Teaches of the Law and Councillors, said in mockery:
42 “Yalokolanga balala, naye ye tasobola kwerokola! Kale nga bw’ali Kabaka wa Isirayiri, ave ku musaalaba akke wansi, naffe tunaamukkiriza!
“He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the ‘King of Israel’! Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
43 Yeesiga Katonda, kale amuggye ku musaalaba obanga Katonda amwagala. Yagamba nti, ‘Ndi Mwana wa Katonda.’”
He has trusted in God; if God wants him, let him deliver him now; for he said ‘I am God’s Son.’”
44 N’abanyazi ababiri abaakomererwa awamu naye nabo ne bamuvuma.
Even the robbers, who were crucified with him, reviled him in the same way.
45 Okuviira ddala ku ssaawa mukaaga mu ttuntu okutuusiza ddala essaawa mwenda ez’olweggulo ensi yonna yabikkibwa ekizikiza.
After mid-day a darkness came over all the country, lasting till three in the afternoon.
46 Ku ssaawa nga mwenda Yesu n’ayogerera waggulu n’eddoboozi ery’omwanguka nti, “Eri, Eri lama sabakusaani,” ekitegeeza nti, “Katonda wange, Katonda wange, lwaki onjabulidde?”
And about three Jesus called out loudly: “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabacthani” — that is to say, ‘O my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me?’
47 Naye abamu ku baali bayimiridde awo bwe baakiwulira ne bagamba nti, “Ayita Eriya.”
Some of those standing by heard this, and said: “The man is calling for Elijah!”
48 Amangwago omu n’adduka n’addira ekyangwe n’akinnyika mu mwenge omukaatuufu n’akiteeka ku muti, n’akimuwa anuuneko.
One of them immediately ran and took a sponge, and, filling it with common wine, put it on the end of a rod, and offered it to him to drink.
49 Naye abalala ne bagamba nti, “Mumuleke. Ka tulabe obanga Eriya anajja n’amulokola.”
But the rest said: “Wait and let us see if Elijah is coming to save him.” [However another man took a spear, and pierced his side; and water and blood flowed from it.]
50 Awo Yesu ne yeeyongera okwogerera waggulu n’eddoboozi eddene, n’awaayo omwoyo gwe.
But Jesus, uttering another loud cry, gave up his spirit.
51 Era laba! Eggigi ly’omu Yeekaalu ne liyulikamu wakati okuva waggulu okutuuka wansi; ensi n’ekankana, n’enjazi ne zaatika.
Suddenly the Temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth shook, the rocks were torn asunder,
52 Entaana ne zibikkuka era abantu ba Katonda bangi abaali bafudde ne bazuukira,
the tombs opened, and the bodies of many of God’s People who had fallen asleep rose,
53 era Yesu bwe yamala okuzuukira ne bava mu ntaana gye baali baziikiddwa ne bayingira mu kibuga ekitukuvu ne balabibwa abantu bangi.
and they, leaving their tombs, went, after the resurrection of Jesus, into the Holy City, and appeared to many people.
54 Omuserikale omukulu w’ekibinja ky’abaserikale ekikumi, n’abaserikale abaali bakuuma Yesu, bwe baalaba okukankana kw’ensi ng’okwa musisi, n’ebirala ebyabaawo, ne batya nnyo. Ne bagamba nti, “Ddala ddala ono abadde Mwana wa Katonda.”
The Roman Captain, and the men with him who were watching Jesus, on seeing the earthquake and all that was happening, became greatly frightened and exclaimed: “This must indeed have been God’s Son!”
55 Waaliwo n’abakazi bangi abaayitanga ne Yesu abaava naye e Ggaliraaya nga bamuweereza, baali beesuddeko akabanga, nga balaba ebigenda mu maaso.
There were many women there, watching from a distance, who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee and had been attending on him.
56 Mu bo mmwe mwali Maliyamu Magudaleene ne Maliyamu nnyina wa Yakobo ne Yusufu, ne nnyina w’abaana ba Zebbedaayo.
Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebediah’s sons.
57 Obudde bwe bwawungeera, ne wajja omusajja omugagga ng’ava Alimasaya, erinnya lye Yusufu eyali omu ku bagoberezi ba Yesu.
When evening had fallen, there came a rich man belonging to Ramah, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.
58 N’agenda eri Piraato n’asabayo omulambo gwa Yesu. Piraato n’alagira bagumuwe.
He went to see Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus; upon which Pilate ordered it to be given him.
59 Yusufu n’atwala omulambo n’aguzinga mu lugoye olulungi olwa linena,
So Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen sheet,
60 n’agugalamiza mu ntaana ye empya gye yatema mu lwazi, n’addira ejjinja eddene n’aliyiringisiza mu mulyango gw’entaana n’aggalawo, ne yeetambulira.
and laid it in his newly-made tomb which he had cut in the rock; and, before he left, he rolled a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.
61 Maliyamu Magudaleene ne Maliyamu munne, bombi baali batudde awo kumpi n’entaana.
Mary of Magdala and the other Mary remained behind, sitting in front of the grave.
62 Enkeera, ng’olunaku olusooka mu nnaku z’Embaga y’Okuyitako luweddeko, bakabona abakulu n’Abafalisaayo ne bagenda eri Piraato,
The next day — that is, the day following the Preparation-Day — the Chief Priests and Pharisees came in a body to Pilate, and said:
63 ne bamugamba nti, “Oweekitiibwa, omulimba oli tujjukira ng’akyali mulamu yagamba nti, ‘Nga wayiseewo ennaku ssatu ndizuukira.’
“Sir, we remember that, during his lifetime, that impostor said ‘I shall rise after three days.’
64 Noolwekyo tukusaba olagire entaana ye ekuumibwe, okutuusa ku lunaku olwokusatu, abayigirizwa be baleme kumubbamu, ne balyoka bategeeza abantu nti azuukidde! Singa ekyo kiba bwe kityo, ekyo kye kijja okuba ekibi ennyo okusinga n’ekyasooka.”
So order the tomb to be made secure till the third day. Otherwise his disciples may come and steal him, and then say to the people ‘He has risen from the dead,’ when the latest imposture will be worse than the first.”
65 Piraato n’abaddamu nti, “Mukozese abaserikale bammwe be mulina mugende mugikuume.”
“You may have a guard,” was Pilate’s reply; “go and make the tomb as secure as you can.”
66 Bwe batyo ne bateeka akabonero ak’envumbo ku jjinja eryaggala omulyango gw’entaana, ne bateekawo n’abakuumi.
So they went made the tomb secure, by sealing the stone, in presence of the guard.
