1 Awo abafalisaayo n’abannyonnyozi b’amateeka abamu abaali bavudde e Yerusaalemi ne bakuŋŋaanira awali Yesu.
One day the Pharisees and some of the Teachers of the Law who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus.
2 Ne balaba abamu ku bayigirizwa be nga balya tebanaabye mu ngalo.
They had noticed that some of his disciples ate their food with their hands ‘defiled,’ by which they meant unwashed.
3 Kubanga Abafalisaayo n’Abayudaaya bonna tebaalyanga nga tebasoose kunaaba mu ngalo n’obwegendereza ng’empisa zaabwe bwe zaali.
(For the Pharisees, and indeed all strict Jews, will not eat without first scrupulously washing their hands, holding in this to the traditions of their ancestors.
4 Era bwe baddanga eka nga bava mu katale, ekyo kye baasookanga okukola nga tebannaba kukwata ku kyakulya kyonna. Waliwo n’obulombolombo obulala bwe baagobereranga ng’okulongoosa ensuwa zaabwe, n’ebikopo, n’ebbinika n’essowaani, n’ebirala bingi.
When they come from market, they will not eat without first sprinkling themselves; and there are many other customs which they have inherited and hold to, such as the ceremonial washing of cups, and jugs, and copper pans).
5 Awo Abafalisaayo n’abannyonnyozi b’amateeka ne babuuza Yesu nti, “Lwaki abayigirizwa bo tebagoberera mpisa za bajjajjaffe ez’edda? Kubanga balya nga tebanaabye mu ngalo.”
So the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law asked Jesus this question — “How is it that your disciples do not follow the traditions of our ancestors, but eat their food with defiled hands?”
6 Yesu n’abaddamu nti, “Bannanfuusi mmwe! Nnabbi Isaaya yaboogerako bulungi ebyobunnabbi bwe yagamba nti, “‘Abantu bano banzisaamu ekitiibwa kya ku mimwa, naye emitima gyabwe tegindiiko.
His answer was: “It was well said by Isaiah when he prophesied about you hypocrites in the words — ‘This is a people that honour me with their lips, while their hearts are far removed from me;
7 Okusinza kwabwe tekuliimu nsa; kubanga bayigiriza bulombolombo bwabwe.’
but vainly do they worship me, For they teach but the precepts of men.’
8 Muleka ebiragiro ebiva eri Katonda ne mugoberera obulombolombo bw’abantu.”
You neglect God’s commandments and hold to the traditions of men.
9 N’abagamba nate nti, “Munyooma ekiragiro kya Katonda, ne muggumiza obulombolombo bwammwe.
Wisely do you set aside God’s commandments,” he exclaimed, “to keep your own traditions!
10 Musa yagamba nti, ‘Kitaawo ne nnyoko obassangamu ekitiibwa.’ Era n’agamba nti, ‘Omuntu yenna ayogera obubi ku kitaawe oba nnyina anattibwanga.’
For while Moses said ‘Honour thy father and thy mother,’ and ‘Let him who reviles his father or mother suffer death,’
11 Naye mmwe mugamba nti kituufu omuntu okulagajjalira bakadde be nga bali mu kwetaaga n’abagamba bugambi nti, ‘Mmunsonyiwe, kubanga kye nandibawadde ye Korubaani.’”
you say ‘If a man says to his father or mother “Whatever of mine might have been of service to you is Korban”’ (which means ‘Given to God’) —
12 “Omuntu temumukkiriza kubeerako ky’akolera kitaawe oba nnyina.
why, then you do not allow him to do anything further for his father or mother!
13 Bwe mutyo munyooma ekigambo kya Katonda mulyoke mutuukirize obulombolombo bwammwe bwe mwaweebwa. N’ebirala bingi ebiri ng’ebyo bye mukola.”
In this way you nullify the words of God by your traditions, which you hand down; and you do many similar things.”
14 Awo Yesu n’ayita ekibiina ky’abantu n’abagamba nti, “Mmwe mwenna, mumpulirize, era mutegeere.
Then Jesus called the people to him again, and said: “Listen to me, all of you, and mark my words.
15 Ebintu ebiyingira mu muntu si bye byonoona empisa ze, wabula ebyo ebiva mu mutima gwe bye bizoonoona.
There is nothing external to a man, which by going into him can ‘defile’ him; but the things that come out from a man are the things that defile him.”
16 (Omuntu alina amatu agawulira awulirize.)”
17 Yesu n’aviira ekibiina n’ayingira mu nnyumba, abayigirizwa be ne bamubuuza amakulu g’ebigambo bye yayogera.
When Jesus went indoors, away from the crowd, his disciples began questioning him about this saying.
18 N’abaddamu nti, “Nammwe temutegedde? Temutegeera nti buli kintu ekiyingira mu muntu si kye kimwonoona?
“What, do even you understand so little?” exclaimed Jesus. “Do not you see that there is nothing external to a man, which by going into a man, can ‘defile’ him,
19 Olw’okuba nga tekiyingira mu mutima gwe naye kiyingira mu lubuto lwe ne kiryoka kigenda mu kabuyonjo.” Mu kwogera atyo Yesu yakakasa nga buli kyakulya bwe kiri ekirongoofu.
because it does not pass into his heart, but into his stomach, and is afterwards got rid of? — in saying this Jesus pronounced all food ‘clean.’
20 Era n’ayongerako na bino nti, “Ebirowoozo by’omuntu bye bimwonoona.
“It is what comes out from a man,” he added, “that defiles him,
21 Kubanga mu mutima gw’omuntu mwe muva ebirowoozo ebibi eby’obukaba, n’obubbi, n’obutemu, n’obwenzi,
for it is from within, out of the hearts of men, that there come evil thoughts — unchastity, theft, murder, adultery,
22 n’okwegomba, n’omutima omubi, n’obukuusa, n’obumenyi bw’amateeka, n’obuggya, n’okusekeeterera, n’obusirusiru.
greed, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, haughtiness, folly;
23 Ebibi bino byonna biva munda mu muntu ne bimwonoona.”
all these wicked things come from within, and do defile a man.”
24 Awo Yesu n’alaga mu bitundu by’e Ttuulo, n’atayagala kitegeerekeke nti ali mu bitundu ebyo, naye ne kitasoboka.
On leaving that place, Jesus went to the district of Tyre and Sidon. And he went into a house, and did not wish anyone to know it, but could not escape notice.
25 Omukazi eyalina muwala we ng’aliko omwoyo omubi, olwawulira nga Yesu yaakatuuka, n’ajja eri Yesu, n’agwa ku bigere bye.
For a woman, whose little daughter had a foul spirit in her, heard of him immediately, and came and threw herself at his feet —
26 Omukazi teyali Muyudaaya, yali Musulofoyiniiki, n’amwegayirira agobe dayimooni ku mwana we.
the woman was a foreigner, a native of Syrian Phoenicia — and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
27 Yesu n’agamba omukazi nti, “Omwana asaana asoke akkute, kubanga tekiba kituufu okuddira emmere y’omwana okugisuulira embwa.”
“Let the children be satisfied first,” answered Jesus. “For it is not fair to take the children’s food, and throw it to dogs.”
28 Naye omukazi n’amuddamu nti, “Ekyo bwe kiri, ssebo, naye era n’embwa ezibeera wansi mu mmeeza, ziweebwa ku bukunkumuka obuva ku ssowaani z’abaana.”
“Yes, Master,” she replied; “even the dogs under the table do feed on the children’s crumbs.”
29 Yesu n’amugamba nti, “Olw’ekigambo ekyo, weddireyo eka, kubanga dayimooni avudde ku muwala wo.”
“For saying that,” he answered, “you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
30 Omukazi bwe yaddayo eka yasanga muwala we agalamidde awo ku kitanda, nga muteefu era nga dayimooni amuvuddeko.
The woman went home, and found the child lying on her bed, and the demon gone.
31 Yesu bwe yava mu Ttuulo n’agenda e Sidoni, eyo gye yava n’addayo ku nnyanja ey’e Ggaliraaya ng’ayitira mu “Bibuga Ekkumi” (Dekapoli).
On returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went, by way of Sidon, to the Sea of Galilee, across the district of the Ten Towns.
32 Awo ne bamuleetera omusajja omuggavu w’amatu ate nga tayogera, abantu bonna ne beegayirira Yesu amusseeko emikono gye amuwonye.
Some people brought to him a man who was deaf and almost dumb, and they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.
33 Yesu n’aggya omusajja mu bantu n’amulaza wabbali, n’assa engalo ze mu matu g’omusajja; n’awanda amalusu, n’agasiiga n’olunwe lwe ku lulimi lw’omusajja.
Jesus took him aside from the crowd quietly, put his fingers into the man’s ears, and touched his tongue with saliva.
34 Awo Yesu n’atunula waggulu n’assa ekikkowe, n’alyoka alagira omusajja nti, “Efasa!” ekitegeeza nti, “Gguka.”
Then, looking up to Heaven, he sighed, and said to the man: “Ephphatha!” which means ‘Be opened.’
35 Amangwago amatu g’omusajja ne gagguka n’awulira buli kintu era n’ayogera bulungi!
The man’s ears were opened, the string of his tongue was freed, and he began to talk plainly.
36 Yesu n’akuutira ekibiina baleme kutegeezaako balala ku bigambo ebyo okubisaasaanya, naye bo ne beeyongera okutegeeza.
Jesus insisted upon their not telling any one; but the more he insisted, the more perseveringly they made it known,
37 Kye yakola kyali kibayitiriddeko. Ne boogera nga batenda Yesu nti, “Buli ky’akola kya kyewuunyo, aggula n’amatu ga bakiggala n’ayogeza ne bakasiru!”
and a profound impression was made upon the people. “He has done everything well!” they exclaimed. “He makes even the deaf hear and the dumb speak!”
