1 Oluvannyuma lw’okufa kwa Yoswa, Abayisirayiri ne babuuza Mukama Katonda nti, “Ani mu ffe alisooka okwaŋŋanga Abakanani okubalwanyisa?”
After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked of the LORD, saying, “Who should go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”
2 Mukama Katonda n’abaddamu nti Yuda yalisooka, era laba mbawadde obuwanguzi ku Bakanani.
The LORD said, “Judah shall go up. Behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.”
3 Abasajja ba Yuda ne bagamba baganda baabwe abasajja ba Simyoni nti, “Tugende ffenna mu kitundu kyaffe ekyatuweebwa tulwanyise Abakanani, era naffe tuligenda nammwe mu kitundu ekyabaweebwa.” Awo ne bagenda bonna.
Judah said to Simeon his brother, “Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with you into your lot.” So Simeon went with him.
4 Yuda n’alumba Abakanani n’Abaperezi e Bezeki era Mukama n’amuwa obuwanguzi n’abattamu abasajja omutwalo mulamba.
Judah went up, and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand. They struck ten thousand men in Bezek.
5 Ne bagwikiriza Adonibezeki mu Bezeki; ne bamulwanyisa era ne batta abasajja be.
They found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and they fought against him. They struck the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 Naye Adonibezeki ne yeemulula, ne bamuwondera, ne bamukwata era ne bamusalako engalo ze ensajja n’ebigere ebisajja.
But Adoni-Bezek fled. They pursued him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.
7 Adonibezeki ne yejjusa n’agamba nti, “Nga bakabaka ensanvu abaasalibwako engalo zaabwe ensajja n’ebigere ebisajja, bwe baalondalondanga obukunkumuka wansi w’emmeeza yange, nange bwe ŋŋenda okuba. Kye nakola bannange Katonda nange akintusizzaako.” Ne bamutwala e Yerusaalemi n’afiira eyo.
Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their big toes cut off, scavenged under my table. As I have done, so God has done to me.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8 Abasajja ba Yuda ne balumba ekibuga Yerusaalemi ne bakiwamba ne batta abantu baamu n’ekitala, oluvannyuma ne bakyokya.
The children of Judah fought against Jerusalem, took it, struck it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.
9 Awo abasajja ba Yuda ne balumba Abakanani abaabeeranga mu nsozi ne mu biwonvu ne mu bukiika obwa ddyo.
After that, the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, and in the South, and in the lowland.
10 Ate Yuda n’alumba Abakanani abaabeeranga e Kebbulooni (edda ekyayitibwanga Kiriasualuba), mu lutalo olwali eyo mwe battira Sesayi, Akimaani ne Talumaayi.
Judah went against the Canaanites who lived in Hebron. (The name of Hebron before that was Kiriath Arba.) They struck Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 Ate n’avaayo n’alumba abaabeeranga e Debiri edda ekyayitibwanga Kiriasuseferi.
From there he went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir before that was Kiriath Sepher.)
12 Awo Kalebu n’agamba nti, “Oyo alirumba Kiriasuseferi n’akiwamba ndimuwa muwala wange Akusa okumuwasa.”
Caleb said, “I will give Achsah my daughter as wife to the man who strikes Kiriath Sepher, and takes it.”
13 Osunieri, omwana wa Kenazi muto wa Kalebu n’akiwamba bw’atyo n’aweebwa Akusa okumuwasa.
Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it, so he gave him Achsah his daughter as his wife.
14 Awo Osunieri bwe yamala okuwasa Akusa n’amufukuutirira asabe kitaawe ennimiro; Akusa n’addayo eri kitaawe, bwe yali ava ku ndogoyi, Kalebe n’amubuuza nti, “Oyagala ki?”
When she came, she got him to ask her father for a field. She got off her donkey; and Caleb said to her, “What would you like?”
15 N’amuddamu nti, “Wampa ensi nkalu ey’obukiikaddyo naye kaakano nnyongera ekitundu ekirimu n’enzizi ez’amazzi.” Kalebu n’amuwa ekitundu ekirimu enzizi ekyengulu n’ekyemmanga.
She said to him, “Give me a blessing; because you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water.” Then Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
16 Abazzukulu b’Omukeeni, mukoddomi wa Musa ne bava mu kibuga eky’enkindu ne bagendera wamu n’abasajja ba Yuda ne batuuka mu ddungu lya Yuda eryali mu bukiikaddyo obwa Aladi ne babeera wamu n’abantu baayo.
The children of the Kenite, Moses’ brother-in-law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which is in the south of Arad; and they went and lived with the people.
17 Awo Yuda n’agenda ne muganda we Simyoni ne balumba Abakanani abaabeeranga e Zefasi, ne babazikiririza ddala era ne bakituuma erinnya Koluma.
Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they struck the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. The name of the city was called Hormah.
18 Era Yuda n’awamba Gaza, Asukulooni ne Ekuloni n’ebitundu ebyetoolodde ebibuga bino.
Also Judah took Gaza with its border, and Ashkelon with its border, and Ekron with its border.
19 Mukama yali wamu ne Yuda n’awangula abantu abaabeeranga mu nsozi okuggyako yalemwa okuwangula abantu abaabeeranga mu kiwonvu kubanga baalina amagaali ag’ekyuma.
The LORD was with Judah, and drove out the inhabitants of the hill country; for he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
20 Kebbulooni n’ekiweebwa Kalebu, nga Musa bwe yalagira, n’akifuumulamu batabani ba Anaki abasatu.
They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of there.
21 Naye abasajja ba Benyamini tebaagoba Bayebusi abaabeeranga mu Yerusaalemi noolwekyo Abayebusi babeera wamu n’abasajja ba Benyamini mu Yerusaalemi n’okutuusa kaakano.
The children of Benjamin didn’t drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem, but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
22 N’abasajja ba Yusufu ne balumba Beseri era Mukama yali wamu nabo.
The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
23 Abasajja ba Yusufu ne batuma abakessi okuketta ekibuga ky’e Beseri edda ekyayitibwanga Luzi.
The house of Joseph sent to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city before that was Luz.)
24 Abakessi bwe baalaba omusajja ng’ava mu kibuga ne bamugamba nti, “Tukwegayiridde tulage omulyango oguyingira mu kibuga naffe tunaakuyisa bulungi.”
The watchers saw a man come out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.”
25 Awo bwe yabalaga awayingirirwa, ne bazikiriza n’ekitala abantu b’omu kibuga ekyo; ne batakola kabi konna ku musajja oyo n’ab’omu nnyumba ye bonna.
He showed them the entrance into the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go.
26 Omusajja oyo n’asengukira mu nsi y’Abakiiti, n’azimbayo n’ekibuga n’akituuma Luzi, n’okutuusa kaakano bwe kiyitibwa.
The man went into the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day.
27 Ye Manase teyagoba bantu abaabeeranga mu Besuseani, ne mu Taanaki ne mu Poliyadde abaabeeranga mu Ibuleamu, ne mu Megiddo, n’ebyalo ebiriraanye ebibuga ebyo. Naye Abakanani ne bagaanira ddala okuva mu nsi eyo.
Manasseh didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its towns, nor Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
28 Awo Abayisirayiri bwe beeyongera amaanyi ne bawaliriza Abakanani okubakoleranga emirimu mu kifo ky’okugobwa mu nsi eyo.
When Israel had grown strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labour, and didn’t utterly drive them out.
29 Era ne Efulayimu teyagoba Bakanani naye yabakkiriza okubeera awamu naye mu Gezeri.
Ephraim didn’t drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, but the Canaanites lived in Gezer amongst them.
30 Era ne Zebbulooni teyagoba abantu abaabeeranga mu Kitulooni yadde abaabeeranga mu Nakaloli, naye Abakanani bano n’abakkiriza okubeeranga awamu naye nga bwe bamusasula omusolo.
Zebulun didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived amongst them, and became subject to forced labour.
31 Aseri teyagoba bantu abaabeeranga mu Akko yadde ab’omu Sidoni n’ab’omu Alaba n’ab’omu Akuzibu n’ab’omu Keruba n’ab’omu Afiki yadde ab’omu Lekobu,
Asher didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob;
32 naye Abakanani ne bakkirizibwa okubeera awamu n’abantu ba Aseri.
but the Asherites lived amongst the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they didn’t drive them out.
33 Nafutaali teyagoba bantu abaabeeranga mu Besusemesi ne mu Besuanasi naye n’abakkirizanga okubeeranga awamu n’abantu be nga bwe bamusasula omusolo.
Naphtali didn’t drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but he lived amongst the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and of Beth Anath became subject to forced labour.
34 Bo abasajja ba Ddaani tebaasobola kuwamba nsi y’Abamoli ey’omu kiwonvu era Abamoli ne babafuumuula ne baabazaayo mu nsozi.
The Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill country, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley;
35 Newaakubadde Abamoli baalwanirira nnyo okubeera ku lusozi Keresi, mu Ayalooni ne Saalubimu naye ab’omu kika kya Yusufu ne babafufuggaza era ne babawaliriza okubawanga omusolo.
but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim. Yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labour.
36 Ensalo y’Abamoli yayitanga awo ng’oyambuka Akulabbimu n’okweyongerayo.
The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
