1 Awo olwatuuka omuntu ayitibwa Laazaalo eyali e Besaniya n’alwala. Besaniya ky’ekibuga Maliyamu ne Maliza bannyina ba Laazaalo mwe baali.
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
2 Maliyamu oyo ye yasiiga Mukama waffe amafuta ag’akaloosa ku bigere n’abisiimuuza enviiri ze.
(It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)
3 Awo Maliyamu ne Maliza ne batumira Yesu ne bamutegeeza nti, “Mukama waffe, mukwano gwo gw’oyagala ennyo mulwadde nnyo.”
Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom you love is sick.
4 Naye Yesu bwe yakitegeera n’agamba nti, “Ekigendereddwa mu bulwadde buno si kufa, wabula kulaga kitiibwa kya Katonda, era n’okuweesa Omwana wa Katonda ekitiibwa.”
When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.
5 Yesu yali mukwano gwa Maliyamu ne Maliza ne Laazaalo, naye bwe yawulira nga Laazaalo alwadde n’ayongera n’asigala we yali
Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
6 n’amalawo ennaku endala bbiri nga tanagenda gye bali.
When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
7 Awo ennaku bbiri bwe zaayitawo n’agamba abayigirizwa be nti, “Tuddeyo e Buyudaaya.”
Then after that says he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
8 Kyokka abayigirizwa be, ne bamugamba nti, “Labbi, mu nnaku ntono ezaakayita Abayudaaya baagezaako okukutta. Ate gy’odda?”
His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone you; and go you thither again?
9 Yesu n’abaddamu nti, “Essaawa ez’emisana ziwera kkumi na bbiri, era omuntu bw’atambula emisana teyeesittala kubanga aba alaba.
Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world.
10 Wabula atambula ekiro ye yeesittala, kubanga omusana teguli mu ye.”
But if a man walk in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.
11 Bwe yamala okwogera ebyo n’abagamba nti, “Mukwano gwaffe Laazaalo yeebase, naye ŋŋenda kumuzuukusa.”
These things said he: and after that he says unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.
12 Abayigirizwa ne bamugamba nti, “Mukama waffe oba yeebase anaazuukuka.”
Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
13 Naye Yesu yayogera ku kufa kwa Laazaalo, kyokka bo abayigirizwa be ne balowooza nti ayogera ku kwebaka tulo.
Nevertheless Jesus spoke of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
14 Awo n’alyoka abategeereza ddala nti, “Laazaalo afudde.
Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.
15 Naye ku lw’obulungi bwammwe, nsanyuse kubanga ssaaliyo, mulyoke mukkirize; kale mujje tugende gy’ali.”
And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent all of you may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
16 Awo Tomasi eyayitibwanga Didumo n’agamba banne nti, “Ka tugende tufiire wamu naye.”
Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.
17 Bwe baatuuka e Besaniya Yesu n’asanga nga Laazaalo yaakamala ennaku nnya mu ntaana.
Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
18 Besaniya kyali kumpi ne Yerusaalemi, kilomita nga ssatu.
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off:
19 Abayudaaya bangi baali bazze okukubagiza Maliza ne Maliyamu olw’okufiirwa mwannyinaabwe.
And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.
20 Maliza bwe yawulira nti Yesu ajja, n’agenda okumusisinkana, kyokka Maliyamu n’asigala mu nnyumba ng’atudde.
Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Awo Maliza n’agamba Yesu nti, “Mukama wange, singa wali wano mwannyinaze teyandifudde.
Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not died.
22 Era kaakano mmanyi nti buli ky’onoosaba Katonda, ajja kukikuwa.”
But I know, that even now, whatsoever you will ask of God, God will give it you.
23 Yesu n’agamba Maliza nti, “Mwannyoko ajja kuzuukira.”
Jesus says unto her, Your brother shall rise again.
24 Maliza n’amuddamu nti, “Mmanyi nti alizuukira ku lunaku olw’enkomerero.”
Martha says unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Yesu n’amugamba nti, “Nze kuzuukira n’obulamu; akkiriza nze newaakubadde ng’afudde, aliba mulamu,
Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 na buli muntu omulamu akkiriza nze talifa emirembe n’emirembe. Ekyo okikkiriza?” (aiōn g165)
And whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believe you this? (aiōn g165)
27 Maliza n’amugamba nti, “Mukama wange nzikiriza nti ggwe Kristo Omwana wa Katonda, ajja mu nsi.”
She says unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.
28 Awo Maliza bwe yamala okwogera ebyo, n’ava eri Yesu n’agenda eri Maliyamu n’amuzza ku bbali mu kyama ng’agamba nti, “Omuyigiriza azze, akuyita.”
And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master has come, and calls for you.
29 Maliyamu olwawulira ekyo n’asitukiramu n’agenda eri Yesu.
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him.
30 Yesu yali akyali mu kifo Maliza we yamusisinkana nga tannatuuka mu kibuga.
Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.
31 Abayudaaya abaali bazze okukubagiza abaali mu nnyumba ne Maliyamu bwe baamulaba ng’ayimiridde mangu ng’afuluma ne bamugoberera ne balowooza nti agenda ku ntaana akaabire eyo.
The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goes unto the grave to weep there.
32 Maliyamu bwe yatuuka awali Yesu n’afukamira ku bigere bye, nga bw’agamba nti, “Mukama wange, singa wali wano mwannyinaze teyandifudde.”
Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother had not died.
33 Yesu bwe yamulaba ng’akaaba era n’Abayudaaya abaali naye nga bakaaba n’anyolwa mu mutima, n’ajjula obuyinike.
When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, (pneuma) and was troubled.
34 N’abuuza nti, “Mwamuteeka wa?” Ne bamugamba nti, “Mukama waffe jjangu olabeyo.”
And said, Where have all of you laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.
35 Yesu n’akaaba amaziga.
Jesus wept.
36 Awo Abayudaaya ne bagamba nti, “Ng’abadde amwagala nnyo!”
Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!
37 Naye abamu ku bo ne bagamba nti, “Ono eyazibula amaaso ga muzibe, lwaki teyaziyiza musajja ono kufa?”
And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?
38 Awo Yesu ne yeeyongera okujjula obuyinike. N’atuuka ku ntaana. Yali mpuku ng’eggaliddwawo n’ejjinja.
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself comes to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
39 Yesu n’agamba nti, “Muggyeewo ejjinja.” Naye Maliza, mwannyina w’omufu, n’amugamba nti, “Kaakano awunya nnyo, kubanga yaakamala ennaku nnya mu ntaana.”
Jesus said, Take all of you away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, says unto him, Lord, by this time he stinks: for he has been dead four days.
40 Yesu n’amuddamu nti, “Saakugambye nti bw’onokkiriza onoolaba ekitiibwa kya Katonda?”
Jesus says unto her, Said I not unto you, that, if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?
41 Ne baggyawo ejjinja. Awo Yesu n’atunula waggulu n’agamba nti, “Kitange nkwebaza olw’okumpulira.
Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me.
42 Mmanyi nti bulijjo ompulira, naye kino nkyogedde olw’abantu bano abayimiridde wano, balyoke bakkirize nti ggwe wantuma.”
And I knew that you hear me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that you have sent me.
43 Bwe yamala okwogera bw’atyo, n’akoowoola mu ddoboozi ery’omwanguka nti, “Laazaalo fuluma.”
And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 Awo Laazaalo n’ava mu ntaana, ng’amagulu ge n’emikono bizingiddwa mu ngoye eziziikibwamu abafu, nga n’ekiremba kisibiddwa ku maaso ge. Yesu n’abagamba nti, “Mumusumulule atambule.”
And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a cloth. Jesus says unto them, Loose him, and let him go.
45 Bangi ku Bayudaaya abajja ne Maliyamu bwe baalaba Yesu ky’akoze ne bamukkiriza.
Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him.
46 Naye abalala ne bagenda eri Abafalisaayo ne babategeeza Yesu kye yakola.
But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done.
47 Awo bakabona abakulu n’Abafalisaayo ne batuuza olukiiko ne bagamba nti, “Tukole ki? Kubanga omuntu ono akola ebyamagero bingi.
Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many miracles.
48 Bwe tumuleka bw’atyo, abantu bonna bajja kumukkiriza bamugoberere, n’ekirivaamu Abaruumi bagenda kujja bazikirize ekifo ekitukuvu n’eggwanga lyaffe.”
If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.
49 Awo omu ku bo, Kayaafa eyali Kabona Asinga Obukulu mu mwaka ogwo, n’abagamba nti, “Mmwe temuliiko kye mumanyi.
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, All of you know nothing at all,
50 Temulaba nti kirungi omuntu omu afe, eggwanga lyonna lireme kuzikirira?”
Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.
51 Ekyo Kayaafa teyakyogera ku bubwe, wabula ye nga Kabona Asinga Obukulu, yayogera eby’obunnabbi nti Yesu yali anaatera okufiirira eggwanga,
And this spoke he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;
52 ate si ggwanga lyokka naye n’okukuŋŋaanya abaana ba Katonda abaasaasaana.
And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
53 Okuva ku lunaku olwo abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya ne basala amagezi okutta Yesu.
Then from that day forth they took counsel together in order to put him to death.
54 Noolwekyo, Yesu n’alekayo okutambula mu Buyudaaya mu lwatu, wabula n’avaayo n’alaga mu kifo ekiriraanye eddungu, mu kibuga ekiyitibwa Efulayimu, n’abeera eyo n’abayigirizwa be.
Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.
55 Embaga y’Abayudaaya ejjuukirirwako Okuyitako yali eneetera okutuuka, abantu bangi ne bava mu byalo ne bambuka e Yerusaalemi okukola omukolo ogw’okwetukuza ng’embaga tennatuuka.
And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.
56 Bwe baali bakuŋŋaanidde mu Yeekaalu, ne banoonya Yesu, ne beebuuzaganya nti, “Mulowooza mutya? Yesu tajje ku mbaga?”
Then sought they for Jesus, and spoke among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think all of you, that he will not come to the feast?
57 Bakabona abakulu n’Abafalisaayo baali balagidde nti, Omuntu yenna bw’amanya Yesu wali abategeeze, balyoke bamukwate.
Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should show it, that they might take him.
