1 Awo Kabona Asinga Obukulu n’abuuza Suteefano nti, “Ebyo bwe biri bwe bityo?”
The high priest said, “Are these things so?”
2 Suteefano n’addamu nti, “Baganda bange ne bakadde bange, mumpulirize! Katonda ow’ekitiibwa yalabikira jjajjaffe Ibulayimu ng’akyali mu Mesopotamiya, nga tannaba kulaga mu Kalani.
He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
3 N’amugamba nti, ‘Vva mu nsi yannyo ne mu bantu bo, ogende mu nsi gye ndikulaga.’
and said to him, ‘Get out of your land and away from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’
4 “Bw’atyo n’ava mu nsi y’Abakuludaaya n’abeera mu Kalani, okutuusa kitaawe bwe yafa. Awo Katonda n’amuleeta wano mu nsi eno mwe tuli kaakano.
Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land where you are now living.
5 Naye n’atamuwaako ttaka lirye newaakubadde awalinnyibwa ekigere. Kyokka n’asuubiza okugimuwa okugirya, ye n’ezzadde lye oluvannyuma lwe, newaakubadde nga mu kiseera ekyo lbulayimu teyalina mwana!
He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his offspring after him, when he still had no child.
6 Katonda n’amugamba nti ezzadde lye, baliba bagenyi mu nsi y’abalala, era balibafuula abaddu, ne babayisa bubi okumala emyaka ebikumi bina.
God spoke in this way: that his offspring would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.
7 Era Katonda n’agamba nti, ‘Ndibonereza eggwanga eryo eriribafuula abaddu, n’oluvannyuma balivaayo ne bansinziza mu kifo kino.’
‘I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve me in this place.’
8 Era n’amuwa okukomolebwa ng’akabonero ak’endagaano. Awo lbulayimu n’azaala lsaaka, n’amukomola ng’awezezza ennaku munaana ez’obukulu. Isaaka n’azaala Yakobo, ne Yakobo n’azaala bajjajjaffe ekkumi n’ababiri.
He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
9 “Bajjajja abo ne bakwatirwa Yusufu obuggya, ne bamutunda mu Misiri. Naye Katonda yali naye,
“The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him
10 n’amuwonya mu kubonaabona kwonna era n’amuwa ekisa n’amagezi mu maaso ga Falaawo, ye kabaka w’e Misiri. Falaawo n’amuwa okufuga Misiri yonna era n’amukwasa okulabirira byonna ebifa mu lubiri lwe.
and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
11 “Awo enjala n’egwa mu Misiri yonna ne mu nsi ya Kanani, n’ereetera bajjajjaffe okubonaabona ennyo kubanga baali tebalina we baggya mmere.
Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.
12 Yakobo bwe yawulira nga mu Misiri eriyo eŋŋaano n’atumayo bajjajjaffe, omulundi gwabwe ogwasooka.
But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.
13 Ku mulundi ogwokubiri Yusufu ne yeeyanjulira baganda be era n’ayanjulira Falaawo baganda be.
On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh.
14 Bw’atyo Yusufu n’atumya kitaawe, Yakobo, era n’ab’ennyumba ya kitaawe bonna be bantu nsanvu mu bataano.
Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.
15 Bw’atyo Yakobo n’ajja e Misiri era n’afiira eyo ne bajjajjaffe.
Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, himself and our fathers;
16 Oluvannyuma baaleetebwa e Sekemu mu ntaana Ibulayimu gye yali aguze omuwendo gw’effeeza, ku batabani ba Kamoli mu Sekemu.
and they were brought back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.
17 “Ekiseera ky’ekisuubizo bwe kyagenda kisembera, Katonda kye yasuubiza Ibulayimu, abantu ne beeyongera ne baala mu Misiri.
“But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
18 Awo kabaka omulala eyali tamanyi Yusufu n’atandika okufuga Misiri.
until there arose a different king who didn’t know Joseph.
19 Kabaka oyo n’asalira eggwanga lyaffe amagezi, n’abonyaabonya bajjajjaffe, ng’abasuuza abaana baabwe abawere baleme okuba abalamu.
The same took advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to abandon their babies, so that they wouldn’t stay alive.
20 “Mu biseera ebyo ne Musa n’azaalibwa, n’ayagalwa nnyo Katonda. Bakadde be ne bamulabirira mu nnyumba yaabwe okumala emyezi esatu.
At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome to God. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.
21 Bwe yalekebwa mu mugga, muwala wa Falaawo n’amulonda n’amutwala n’amulera nga mutabani we.
When he was abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up and reared him as her own son.
22 Musa n’ayigirizibwa mu magezi gonna ag’Abamisiri, n’akula nga w’amaanyi mu bigambo ne mu bikolwa.
Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.
23 “Awo Musa bwe yali awezezza emyaka amakumi ana, n’asalawo mu mutima gwe okukyalirako baganda be, abaana ba Isirayiri.
But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
24 N’alaba Omuyisirayiri ng’anyigirizibwa, n’amutaasa, n’atta Omumisiri ng’awoolera eggwanga olw’oyo eyali anyigirizibwa.
Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.
25 Musa n’alowooza nti baganda be banaategeera nga Katonda amutumye okubalokola, naye ne batakitegeera.
He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn’t understand.
26 Olunaku olwaddirira n’alaba abalwana. N’agezaako okubatabaganya ng’abagamba nti, ‘Abasajja lwaki mulwana nga muli baaluganda?’
“The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’
27 “Naye oli eyali ayiikiriza munne n’asindika eri Musa ng’agamba nti, ‘Ani eyakufuula omufuzi waffe era omulamuzi waffe?
But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
28 Oyagala kunzita nga bwe watta Omumisiri jjo?’
Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
29 Musa bwe yawulira ebyo, n’adduka n’agenda abeera mugenyi mu nsi ya Midiyaani, era eyo n’azaalirayo abaana aboobulenzi babiri.
Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
30 “Awo nga wayiseewo emyaka amakumi ana, Musa bwe yali ng’ali mu ddungu ly’olusozi Sinaayi, malayika n’amulabikira mu muliro ogwaka, wakati mu kisaka.
“When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
31 Musa bwe yakiraba ne yeewuunya. N’agenda ng’asemberera ekisaka yeetegereze, eddoboozi lya Mukama ne limugamba nti,
When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, the voice of the Lord came to him,
32 ‘Nze Katonda wa bajjajja bo, Katonda wa Ibulayimu, ne Isaaka ne Yakobo.’ Musa n’akankana, era n’atasobola na kwongera kutunulayo.
‘I am the God of your fathers: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Moses trembled and dared not look.
33 “Awo Mukama n’agamba Musa nti, ‘Gyamu engatto zo, kubanga ekifo w’oyimiridde kitukuvu.
The Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
34 Ndabye okubonaabona kw’abantu bange mu Misiri, ne mpulira n’okusinda kwabwe. Kyenvudde nzika okubalokola. Kaakano jjangu, nkutume e Misiri.’
I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’
35 “Oyo Musa gwe baagaana nga bagamba nti, ‘Ani eyakufuula omufuzi era omulamuzi waffe?’ Oyo Katonda gwe yatuma ng’ayita mu malayika eyamulabikira mu kisaka eky’omuliro, abeere omufuzi waabwe era omununuzi waabwe.
“This Moses whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
36 Oyo n’abaggyayo ng’amaze okukola ebyamagero n’ebyewuunyisa, mu nsi y’e Misiri, n’abayisa mu Nnyanja Emyufu, n’abatambuza mu ddungu okumala emyaka amakumi ana.
This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.
37 “Oyo ye Musa eyategeeza abaana ba Isirayiri nti, ‘Katonda agenda kubayimusiza Nnabbi ng’amuggya mu baganda bammwe nga nze.’
This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.’
38 Era Musa oyo ye yali ne bajjajjaffe mu ddungu nga bakuŋŋaanye nga malayika ayogera naye ku lusozi Sinaayi, era yaweebwa ebigambo eby’obulamu okubitutuusaako.
This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living revelations to give to us,
39 “Naye bajjajjaffe baagaana okumugondera, ne bamujeemera, era mu mitima gyabwe ne baddayo e Misiri.
to whom our fathers wouldn’t be obedient, but rejected him and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
40 Ne bagamba Alooni nti, ‘Tukolere bakatonda abanaatukulembera, kubanga ono Musa eyatuggya mu nsi y’e Misiri tetumanyi kyabadde.’
saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don’t know what has become of him.’
41 Mu nnaku ezo, ne beekolera ennyana, ne bawaayo ssaddaaka eri ekifaananyi, ne basanyukira ekyo kye beekoledde n’emikono gyabwe.
They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
42 Awo Katonda n’abavaako, n’abawaayo okusinzanga eggye ery’omu ggulu, nga bwe kyawandiikibwa mu kitabo kya bannabbi nti, “‘Mwandeeteranga ssaddaaka n’ebiweebwayo mu ddungu emyaka gyonna amakumi ana, ggw’ennyumba ya Isirayiri?
But God turned away and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
43 Muzimbye essabo lya Moloki, ne mugulumiza emmunyeenye ya katonda wammwe Lefani, nga be bakatonda abalala be mwekolera mubasinze. Kyendiva mbawaŋŋangusa’ okusukka Babulooni.
You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship, so I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’
44 “Bajjajjaffe baatambula mu ddungu nga beetisse Eweema ey’Endagaano, eyakolebwa nga Katonda bwe yalagirira Musa ng’efaanana nga bwe yagimulaga.
“Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;
45 Bajjajjaffe bajja bagisituzza abaana baabwe, okutuusa Yoswa lwe yajja nayo okulya ensi y’abamawanga Katonda be yagobanga mu maaso ga bajjajjaffe. Eweema n’ebeerawo okutuusa ku mirembe gya Dawudi.
which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations whom God drove out before the face of our fathers to the days of David,
46 Dawudi n’asiimibwa Katonda, era n’asaba azimbire Katonda wa Yakobo ennyumba.
who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
47 Naye Sulemaani ye yagizimba.
But Solomon built him a house.
48 “Naye oyo Ali Waggulu Ennyo tabeera mu nnyumba zizimbiddwa bantu. Nga nnabbi bw’agamba nti,
However, the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,
49 “‘Eggulu y’entebe yange ey’obwakabaka. N’ensi ke katebe kwe nteeka ebigere byange. Mukama n’agamba nti, Ononzimbira nnyumba ya ngeri ki? Oba kifo ki mwe ndiwummulira?
‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord. ‘Or what is the place of my rest?
50 Omukono gwange si gwe gwakola ebyo byonna!’
Didn’t my hand make all these things?’
51 “Mmwe abalina ensingo enkakanyavu, abatakomolebwanga mu mutima wadde amatu, muwakanya Mwoyo Mutukuvu bulijjo; era bajjajjammwe nga bwe baali, nammwe bwe mutyo bwe muli.
“You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.
52 Nnabbi ki bajjajjammwe gwe bataayigganya? Batta n’abo abaalangirira okujja kw’Omutuukirivu, gwe mwalyamu olukwe ne mumutta.
Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.
53 Mmwe mwaweebwa amateeka nga bwe gaalagirwa bamalayika naye ne mutagagondera.”
You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn’t keep it!”
54 Awo abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya bwe baawulira ebigambo ebyo byonna Suteefano bye yayogera, ne bajjula obusungu bungi ne bamulumira obujiji.
Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
55 Naye Suteefano ng’ajjudde Mwoyo Mutukuvu, n’atunuulira eggulu enkaliriza, n’alaba ekitiibwa kya Katonda, ne Yesu ng’ayimiridde ku mukono gwa Katonda ogwa ddyo.
But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
56 N’abagamba nti, “Laba, ndaba eggulu nga libikkuse, nga n’Omwana w’Omuntu ayimiridde ku mukono ogwa ddyo ogwa Katonda.”
and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
57 Ne baleekaanira waggulu nga bazibikidde amatu gaabwe ne bamweyiwako.
But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears, then rushed at him with one accord.
58 Ne bamusindiikiriza ebweru w’ekibuga, ne bamukuba amayinja. Abaamukuba ne bassa eminagiro gyabwe ku bigere by’omuvubuka erinnya lye Sawulo.
They threw him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
59 Awo bwe baali bakuba Suteefano amayinja, n’akoowoola Katonda ng’agamba nti, “Mukama wange Yesu, twala omwoyo gwange.”
They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”
60 N’agwa wansi ku maviivi n’akaaba mu ddoboozi ery’omwanguka nti, “Mukama wange, tobavunaana olw’ekibi kino.” Bwe yamala okwogera ekyo, n’afa.
He kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
