< Ebikolwa by’Abatume 17 >

1 Awo ne batambula ne bayita mu bibuga Anfipoli ne Apolooniya ne batuuka e Sessaloniika, omwali ekkuŋŋaaniro ly’Abayudaaya.
Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:
2 Pawulo, ng’empisa ye bwe yali, n’agenda n’ababuuliranga ekigambo kya Katonda okuva mu byawandiikibwa, ku buli lwa Ssabbiiti okumala Ssabbiiti ssatu.
And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
3 N’abannyonnyola era n’abalaga nga bwe kyali kyetaagisa Kristo okubonaabona n’okuzuukira mu bafu, era nti, “Oyo ye Kristo Yesu gwe mbabuulira.”
Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.
4 Abamu ku Bayudaaya abaamuwuliriza ne bakkiriza ne beegatta ku Pawulo ne Siira; era n’Abayonaani bangi abatya Katonda awamu n’abakazi bangi ab’ekitiibwa mu kibuga ekyo.
And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
5 Naye Abayudaaya ne bakwatibwa obuggya, ne bagenda nga bafukuutirira abantu ab’empisa embi ne babaggya mu nguudo z’omu kibuga ne mu katale, ne batandikawo akasasamalo mu kibuga. Ne balumbagana amaka ga Yasooni nga banoonyaamu Pawulo ne Siira babatwale mu kibiina ky’abantu.
But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
6 Bwe baababulwa, kwe kukwata Yasooni n’abooluganda abamu ne babaleeta mu maaso g’abakulu b’ekibuga, nga bwe baleekaana nti, “Pawulo ne Siira batabuddetabudde ebifo ebirala mu nsi yonna, ne kaakano bazze wano batabuletabule ekibuga kyaffe,
And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
7 era Yasooni oyo y’abaaniriza mu maka ge. Bano bonna bazizza omusango ogw’okuseeketerera eggwanga ne bamenya amateeka ga Kayisaali nga bayimbirira kabaka omulala Yesu.”
Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, [one] Jesus.
8 Ekibiina n’abakulu b’ekibuga bwe baawulira ebintu ebyo ne basasamala.
And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
9 Bwe baamala okusasuza Yasooni ne banne omutango, ne babaleka ne bagenda.
And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.
10 Obudde bwe bwaziba abooluganda ne bafulumya Pawulo ne Siira mu kibuga ne babaweereza e Beroya. Bwe baatuuka eyo ne bagenda mu kkuŋŋaaniro ly’Abayudaaya okusinza n’okubuulira, nga bwe yali empisa yaabwe.
And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming [thither] went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 Abayudaaya b’omu Beroya baali balungi okusinga ab’e Sessaloniika, ne bawuliriza bulungi n’essanyu Ekigambo ekyababuulirwa. Buli lunaku nga babikkula Ebyawandiikibwa okunoonyaamu ebyo Pawulo ne Siira bye baayogerangako bakakase nti bya mazima.
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
12 Era Abayudaaya bangi ne bakkiriza, n’abakazi ab’ekitiibwa Abayonaani bangi n’abasajja, nabo ne bakkiriza.
Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
13 Naye Abayudaaya ab’omu Sessaloniika bwe baategeera nga Pawulo abuulira ekigambo kya Katonda mu Beroya, ne bamuwondera ne batabangula ekibiina.
But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.
14 Amangwago abooluganda bwe bakitegeera ne baweereza Pawulo ku nnyanja, Siira ne Timoseewo bo ne basigala e Beroya.
And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.
15 Abaawerekera ku Pawulo ne bagenda naye okutuukira ddala mu Asene, eyo gye baamuleka ne bakomawo e Beroya ng’abatumye bagambe Siira ne Timoseewo bagende mangu gy’ali.
And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.
16 Ebbanga Pawulo lye yamala ng’alinda Siira ne Timoseewo mu Asene, n’alumwa nnyo mu mutima bwe yalaba ng’ekibuga kijjudde bakatonda abalala.
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
17 N’abeeranga mu kkuŋŋaaniro buli lunaku ng’akubaganya ebirowoozo n’Abayudaaya n’Abamawanga abatya Katonda, era n’ayogeranga eri abantu bonna abajjanga okumuwuliriza mu kibuga wakati okumpi n’akatale.
Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.
18 Abamu ku bayigiriza bakagezimunnyu Aba Epikuliyo ne Abasutoyiiko ne batandika okuwakana naye. Bwe yabuulira ku Yesu n’okuzuukira kw’abafu ne bagamba nti, “Aloota buloosi,” n’abalala nti, “Waliwo eddiini empya etali ya wano gy’ayimbirira.”
Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.
19 Naye ne bamuyita ajje mu kukuŋŋaana kwabwe okwa Aleyopaago nga bagamba nti, “Twagala okwongera okumanya ebikwata ku kuyigiriza kuno okuggya,
And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, [is]?
20 kubanga oyogedde ebintu bingi ebyewuunyisa, noolwekyo twagala okwongera okumanya kye bitegeeza.”
For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.
21 Abaasene bonna n’abagenyi abajjanga mu Asene, baayagalanga nnyo okumala ebiseera byabwe mu kukubaganya ebirowoozo ku bintu ebiggya bye baakawulira.
(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
22 Awo Pawulo n’ayimirira mu maaso gaabwe mu Aleyopaago, n’abagamba nti, “Abasajja b’omu Asene! Ntegedde nga bwe muli abannaddiini ennyo;
Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, [Ye] men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23 kubanga bwe mbadde ntambulatambula ne ndaba ebyoto bya ssaddaaka bingi, ne ku kimu nga kuliko ebigambo bino nti: Kya Katonda Atamanyiddwa. Mubadde mumusinza nga temumumanyi, nange kaakano njagala mbamutegeeze.
For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
24 “Katonda oyo ye yakola ensi n’ebintu byonna ebigirimu. Era olwokubanga ye Mukama w’eggulu n’ensi tabeera mu yeekaalu ezikolebwa n’emikono gy’abantu,
God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
25 era abantu tebayinza kumuyamba mu byetaago bye, kubanga talina byetaago! Ye yennyini y’awa buli muntu obulamu n’omukka gw’assa n’ebintu byonna.
Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
26 Ye yatonda abantu bonna mu nsi, ng’abaggya mu muntu omu, n’abasaasaanya mu mawanga okubuna ensi yonna. N’ateekateeka amawanga agalisituka n’agaligwa, era n’ebbanga lye galimala. Era n’agakolera n’ensalo zaago.
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
27 Yakola bw’atyo ng’ayagala abantu bonna banoonye Katonda, nga bafuba okumuvumbula, okumutuukako, newaakubadde nga buli omu ku ffe tamuli wala.
That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:
28 Kubanga mu ye mwe tubeera, era mwe tutambulira, era mwe muli obulamu bwaffe. Ng’omu ku bawandiisi bammwe bw’agamba nti, ‘Tuli baana ba Katonda.’
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
29 “Obanga kino kya mazima nti tuli baana ba Katonda, tetusaana kumulowoozaako ng’ekibajje ekikoleddwa abantu oba ekintu ekyoleddwa mu zaabu oba ffeeza oba ekitemeddwa mu jjinja.
Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.
30 Edda mu biseera ebyayita Katonda yagumiikiriza obutamanya bw’omuntu ku bintu ng’ebyo, naye kaakano alagira abantu bonna buli wantu okwenenya.
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
31 Kubanga yateekawo olunaku, oyo gwe yalonda lw’alisalirako ensi yonna omusango mu bwenkanya. Era yamukakasa eri abantu bonna kubanga yamuzuukiza mu bafu.”
Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by [that] man whom he hath ordained; [whereof] he hath given assurance unto all [men], in that he hath raised him from the dead.
32 Awo bwe baawulira Pawulo ng’ayogera ku kuzuukira kw’abafu, abamu ne bamusekerera, abalala ne bamugamba nti, “Twandiyagadde okwongera okukuwuliriza ku nsonga eyo olulala.”
And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this [matter].
33 Bw’atyo Pawulo n’afuluma mu lukuŋŋaana lwabwe.
So Paul departed from among them.
34 Naye abamu ku bo ne bamugoberera ne bakkiriza Mukama waffe. Omwo mwe mwali Diyonusiyo Omwaleyopaago, n’omukazi erinnya lye Damali n’abalala.
Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which [was] Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
