1 Sauss kumoss ar mieru ir labāks, nekā pilns nams ar kaujamiem, kur ķildas.
Better is a dry morsel, and quietness with it, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
2 Gudrs kalps valdīs pār netiklu dēlu un dalīs mantojumu starp brāļiem.
A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
3 Kausējamais katls sudrabu, un ceplis zeltu, bet Tas Kungs pārbauda sirdis.
The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
4 Netiklis klausās uz blēņu valodām, melkulis griež ausi uz neliešu mēlēm.
A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.
5 Kas nabagu apsmej, tas nievā viņa Radītāju, un kas par viņa bēdām priecājās, nepaliks nesodīts.
He that mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
6 Sirmgalvju kronis ir bērnu bērni, un bērnu goda rota ir viņu tēvi.
Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children is their fathers.
7 Ģeķiem nepieder augsti vārdi, nedz lielam kungam melot.
Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
8 Kam ir ko dot, tam tas ir kā dārgs akmens; kur tik tas griežas, tur labi izdodas.
A bribe is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: wherever it turneth, it prospereth.
9 Kas grēku apklāj, tas iekopj draudzību; bet kas vainu no jauna aizņem, sarīdina radus.
He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
10 Aprāšana vairāk satriec prātīgo, nekā simts sitienu ģeķi.
A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 Dumpinieks meklē tik ļaunu vien, bet bargs vēstnesis pret viņu taps sūtīts.
An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
12 Labāki lāču māti sastapt, kurai bērni paņemti, nekā ģeķi viņa ģeķībā.
Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
13 Kas labu ar ļaunu atmaksā, no tā nama ļaunums neatstāsies.
Whoever rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 Ķildu sākt ir kā ūdens dambi izplēst; pirms sāk jaukties, atstājies.
The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore withdraw from contention, before it be meddled with.
15 Kas bezdievīgu taisno un taisnu pazudina, tie abi Tam Kungam ir negantība.
He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
16 Ko palīdz ģeķim maksa rokā, gudrību pirkt, kad jēgas nav.
Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
17 Draugs mīļo ikkatrā laikā, bet brālis piedzen bēdu dienā.
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
18 Tas ir negudrs, kas roku dod galvodams priekš sava tuvākā.
A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
19 Kas ķildu mīļo, tas mīļo grēku; un kas savas durvis taisa augstas, tas meklē nelaimi.
He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
20 Kam nelieša sirds, tas laba neatradīs; un kam netikla mēle, tas iekritīs nelaimē.
He that hath a perverse heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
21 Kas ģeķi dzemdina, tam tas būs par skumjām, un ģeķa tēvs nevar priecāties.
He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 Priecīga sirds dziedina vainas, bet sagrauzts gars izkaltē kaulus.
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
23 Bezdievīgais ņem slepeni dāvanas, locīt taisnības ceļu.
A wicked man taketh a bribe out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
24 Prātīga cilvēka vaigā ir gudrība, bet ģeķa acis laistās līdz pasaules galiem.
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
25 Ģeķīgs dēls savam tēvam par sirdēstiem, un rūgtums tai, kas viņu dzemdējusi.
A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.
26 Jau nav labi, taisno sodīt, ne vēl goda vīru sist taisnības dēļ.
Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
27 Kas savu muti valda, tam ir samaņa, un kam lēns gars, tas ir prāta vīrs.
He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 Pat ģeķi, kad tik klusu cieš, notur par gudru, un par prāta vīru, kamēr savu muti tur.
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
