< Psalmorum 49 >
1 in finem filiis Core psalmus audite haec omnes gentes auribus percipite omnes qui habitatis orbem
For the choirmaster. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all inhabitants of the world,
2 quique terriginae et filii hominum in unum dives et pauper
both low and high, rich and poor alike.
3 os meum loquetur sapientiam et meditatio cordis mei prudentiam
My mouth will impart wisdom, and the meditation of my heart will bring understanding.
4 inclinabo in parabolam aurem meam aperiam in psalterio propositionem meam
I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle with the harp:
5 cur timebo in die malo iniquitas calcanei mei circumdabit me
Why should I fear in times of trouble, when wicked usurpers surround me?
6 qui confidunt in virtute sua et in multitudine divitiarum suarum gloriantur
They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.
7 frater non redimit redimet homo non dabit Deo placationem suam
No man can possibly redeem his brother or pay his ransom to God.
8 et pretium redemptionis animae suae et laboravit in aeternum
For the redemption of his soul is costly, and never can payment suffice,
9 et vivet adhuc; in finem
that he should live on forever and not see decay.
For it is clear that wise men die, and the foolish and the senseless both perish and leave their wealth to others.
11 et sepulchra eorum domus illorum in aeternum tabernacula eorum in progeniem et progeniem vocaverunt nomina sua in terris suis
Their graves are their eternal homes— their dwellings for endless generations— even though their lands were their namesakes.
But a man, despite his wealth, cannot endure; he is like the beasts that perish.
13 haec via illorum scandalum ipsis et postea in ore suo conplacebunt diapsalma
This is the fate of the self-confident and their followers who endorse their sayings.
14 sicut oves in inferno positi sunt mors depascet eos et dominabuntur eorum iusti in matutino et auxilium eorum veterescet in inferno a gloria eorum (Sheol )
Like sheep they are destined for Sheol. Death will be their shepherd. The upright will rule them in the morning, and their form will decay in Sheol, far from their lofty abode. (Sheol )
15 verumtamen Deus redimet animam meam de manu inferi cum acceperit me diapsalma (Sheol )
But God will redeem my life from Sheol, for He will surely take me to Himself. (Sheol )
Do not be amazed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases.
For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his abundance will not follow him down.
Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul— and men praise you when you prosper—
19 introibit usque in progenies patrum suorum usque in aeternum non videbit lumen
he will join the generation of his fathers, who will never see the light of day.
A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.
