< Proverbiorum 12 >

1 Qui diligit disciplinam, diligit scientiam: qui autem odit increpationes, insipiens est.
Whoever 'ahav ·affectionately loves· correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
2 Qui bonus est, hauriet gratiam a Domino: qui autem confidit in cogitationibus suis, impie agit,
A good man shall obtain favor from Adonai, but he will condemn a man of wicked devices.
3 Non roborabitur homo ex impietate: et radix iustorum non commovebitur.
A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the upright shall not be moved.
4 Mulier diligens, corona est viro suo: et putredo in ossibus eius, quae confusione res dignas gerit.
A worthy woman is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful wife is as rottenness in his bones.
5 Cogitationes iustorum iudicia: et consilia impiorum fraudulenta:
The thoughts of the upright are mishpat ·just·, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.
6 Verba impiorum insidiantur sanguini: os iustorum liberabit eos.
The words of the wicked are about lying in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.
7 Verte impios, et non erunt: domus autem iustorum permanebit.
The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the upright shall stand.
8 Doctrina sua noscitur vir: qui autem vanus et excors est, patebit contemptui.
A man shall be commended according to his wisdom, but he who has a linnened mind shall be despised.
9 Melior est pauper et sufficiens sibi, quam gloriosus et indigens pane.
Better is he who is lightly esteemed, and has a servant, than he who honors himself, and lacks bread.
10 Novit iustus iumentorum suorum animas: viscera autem impiorum crudelia.
A upright man respects the life of his animal, but the tender racham ·merciful love· of the wicked is cruel.
11 Qui operatur terram suam, satiabitur panibus: qui autem sectatur otium, stultissimus est. Qui suavis est in vini morationibus, in suis munitionibus relinquit contumeliam.
He who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, but he who chases fantasies is void of understanding.
12 Desiderium impii monumentum est pessimorum: radix autem iustorum proficiet.
The wicked desires the plunder of evil men, but the root of the upright flourishes.
13 Propter peccata labiorum ruina proximat malo: effugiet autem iustus de angustia.
An evil man is trapped by sinfulness of lips, but the upright shall come out of trouble.
14 De fructu oris sui unusquisque replebitur bonis, et iuxta opera manuum suarum retribuetur ei.
A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth. The work of a man’s hands shall be rewarded to him.
15 Via stulti recta in oculis eius: qui autem sapiens est, audit consilia.
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who is wise sh'ma ·hears obeys· counsel.
16 Fatuus statim indicat iram suam: qui autem dissimulat iniuriam, callidus est.
A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent.
17 Qui quod novit loquitur, iudex iustitiae est: qui autem mentitur, testis est fraudulentus.
He who is truthful testifies honestly, but a false witness lies.
18 Est qui promittit, et quasi gladio pungitur conscientiae: lingua autem sapientium sanitas est.
There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.
19 Labium veritatis firmum erit in perpetuum: qui autem testis est repentinus, concinnat linguam mendacii.
Truth’s lips will be established forever, but a lying tongue is only momentary.
20 Dolus in corde cogitantium mala: qui autem pacis ineunt consilia, sequitur eos gaudium.
Deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil, but joy comes to the promoters of peace.
21 Non contristabit iustum quidquid ei acciderit: impii autem replebuntur malo.
No mischief shall happen to the upright, but the wicked shall be filled with evil.
22 Abominatio est Domino labia mendacia: qui autem fideliter agunt, placent ei.
Lying lips are an abomination to Adonai, but those who do the truth are his delight.
23 Homo versatus celat scientiam: et cor insipientium provocat stultitiam.
A prudent man keeps his knowledge, but the hearts of fools proclaim foolishness.
24 Manus fortium dominabitur: quae autem remissa est, tributis serviet.
The hands of the diligent ones shall rule, but laziness ends in slave labor.
25 Moeror in corde viri humiliabit illum, et sermone bono laetificabitur.
Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs it down, but a kind word makes it glad.
26 Qui negligit damnum propter amicum, iustus est: iter autem impiorum decipiet eos.
A upright person is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
27 Non inveniet fraudulentus lucrum: et substantia hominis erit auri pretium.
The slothful man does not roast his game, but the possessions of diligent men are prized.
28 In semita iustitiae, vita: iter autem devium ducit ad mortem.
In the way of righteousness is life; in its path there is no death.
